Good day class!

Our topic for today is historical perspectives of nursing and computers. The history of nursing and computers
were divided into six time periods: prior to the 1960’s, the 1960’s, the 1970’s, the 1980’s, the 1990’s, and post-
2000. There’s a lot to tell if you look at the humble beginnings of nursing informatics up to the present era
where everything’s digitalized.

Please read on the above topic. You can search the internet or use the book of Saba et al Essentials of Nursing
Informatics.

The name of this activity is COMPUTERS AND NURSES: A History! The essentials of the activity would be as
follows:
1. Assign groups to the different time periods.
2. You will feature important events in the history of nursing informatics through digital images. Since
memorizing an event is difficult to some [if not most] student, we also need to present a historical event
that have made a great impact worldwide at the same time period. Thus, important events in the history
of nursing informatics vis-à-vis with an important world event that happened at the same time period
would give us better retention.
Example, during the 1960’s health information system (HIS) were developed. At this period, the Beatles
became popular. We often memorize important world event (the Beatles). All we have to do is relate it
HIS to Beatles to 1960s.
3. You will act as models during the photo shoot. Example, you can portray a few experts who tried to
incorporate computers to health care (prior to 1960s), “What should be computerized?” in health care
setting during the 1960s, management information systems (MIS) in 1970s), computer-based patient
record system (CPRS) in 1980s, NI as an specialty in nursing (1980s), computer as an integral part of
health care setting (1990s), or personal digital assistants (PDAs) post-2000.
4. Computer parts or computer-related props are necessary for the section who have chosen nursing and
computers.
5. Each group should choose the best 2 shots they have made and post it at the Facebook batch page
before 12:00 midnight today. Further, kindly send a softcopy of the image to my email
[email protected].
6. Tomorrow, we will peer critic each photo and each group would defend their photos.
Enjoy the activity!
