JULIA LUNK was born in rural Hungary. After high school, Lunk followed the call of her art and left the rural countryside for Budapest where she studied for five years at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. There she began studying graphic design, but then received a master’s degree in printmaking. Her love for painting emerged during university while participating yearly in plein air symposiums in the countryside. Exhibited internationally since 1993, her works are inspired by dreams, faraway places, and plants—life’s little miracles. She lives in Boulder, Colorado. SARAH WARNER wrote Alma’s story after seeing an exhibit of Julia Lunk’s paintings. Deeply inspired by the exhibit, she wanted to bring to life some key characters and motifs she saw throughout Lunk’s artwork. The Shape of Color
Strawbery Banke and Monhegan Island
C
arol Aronson-Shore describes her primary subject as “the way color shapes pictorial light and space,” and nowhere is this more evident than in her signature landscapes and seascapes. Continuing in the tradition of American Luminist painters, Aronson-Shore uses color to create paintings characterized by a glowing light that adds depth and warmth to the experience. Finding inspiration in her hometown of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Aronson-Shore uses color, light, and form to explore the historic museum village in her Strawbery Banke series. This series developed from her earlier paintings of Monhegan Island, where she captured the rocky hillsides dotted with simple structures. Her paintings depict human shelters from a past time as well as their relationships to each other and to the natural landscape surrounding them. The Strawbery Banke Museum has provided the artist with a familiar subject combining an experience of time, place, and memory. Carol Aronson-Shore uses her finely tuned skills as a landscape artist to explore the built environment set against its natural surroundings. It is through this perspective that she artfully presents the contrast between man-made structures and the countryside. In Aronson-Shore’s paintings, the natural environment is not just a backdrop for the built environment, as each setting is a thoughtful exploration of the interplay between the two. A resident of Newmarket, New Hampshire, where she lives with her husband, Dane, and daughters Lydia and Abbie, she finds the seacoast a constant source of inspiration. JAMIE LAFLEUR is a painter, gallery owner, and independent curator who has worked professionally in the fine arts field for nearly twenty years. He lives and works in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with his wife, Angie, and two children, Jamison and Ella. LaFleur has focused his career on paintings of and the history of painting in his native state of New Hampshire.

n December 19, 1959, Sunday River Skiway officially opened, mostly through the work of volunteers. DAVID IRONS grew up in South Paris, Maine, learning to ski on a small hill behind his family’s home. Irons continued to ski wherever possible, and following the opening of Sunday River in 1959, Irons became a regular weekend skier there. He joined the Sunday River Ski Patrol in 1968, which he directed from 1971 to 1982. THOMAS AND MARIAH ROBERTS have been friends since age twelve. Born and raised in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the two traveled west after college. Two Lives: One Passion

W
e begin our examination of the life and work of artist William Jurian Kaula and his wife and fellow painter, Lee Lufkin, when they meet in Europe during Academic study in the 1890s. In the first half of the twentieth century, they married, lived, and worked in the vibrant atmosphere of the city of Boston. Over the next forty years the couple traveled, collected antiques, cultivated elaborate terraced gardens in New Hampshire, and most importantly painted together sharing a kinesthetic relationship based in their mutual respect for one another and a shared love of art. What is truly remarkable is that their lives reflect the context of typical American conventions of culture and society. What is special about this couple was their ability to conduct their lives with a deep affection for one another while encouraging their respective artistic talents. Both artists specialized in their craft and subject but were united in their quest to commit themselves to their work. Through text, paintings, photographs, sketches, and journal entries, this book explores the veracity of the lives of two prolific painters who shared an appreciation for the world as exhibited in their works of art.

JULIA LUNK was born in rural Hungary. After high school, Lunk followed the call of her art and left the rural countryside for Budapest where she studied for five years at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. There she began studying graphic design, but then received a master’s degree in printmaking. Her love for painting emerged during university while participating yearly in plein air symposiums in the countryside. Exhibited internationally since 1993, her works are inspired by dreams, faraway places, and plants—life’s little miracles. She lives in Boulder, Colorado. SARAH WARNER wrote Alma’s story after seeing an exhibit of Julia Lunk’s paintings. Deeply inspired by the exhibit, she wanted to bring to life some key characters and motifs she saw throughout Lunk’s artwork. Strawbery Banke and Monhegan Island
C
arol Aronson-Shore describes her primary subject as “the way color shapes pictorial light and space,” and nowhere is this more evident than in her signature landscapes and seascapes. Continuing in the tradition of American Luminist painters, Aronson-Shore uses color to create paintings characterized by a glowing light that adds depth and warmth to the experience. Finding inspiration in her hometown of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Aronson-Shore uses color, light, and form to explore the historic museum village in her Strawbery Banke series. This series developed from her earlier paintings of Monhegan Island, where she captured the rocky hillsides dotted with simple structures. Her paintings depict human shelters from a past time as well as their relationships to each other and to the natural landscape surrounding them. The Strawbery Banke Museum has provided the artist with a familiar subject combining an experience of time, place, and memory. Carol Aronson-Shore uses her finely tuned skills as a landscape artist to explore the built environment set against its natural surroundings. It is through this perspective that she artfully presents the contrast between man-made structures and the countryside. In Aronson-Shore’s paintings, the natural environment is not just a backdrop for the built environment, as each setting is a thoughtful exploration of the interplay between the two. DAVID IRONS grew up in South Paris, Maine, learning to ski on a small hill behind his family’s home. e begin our examination of the life and work of artist William Jurian Kaula and his wife and fellow painter, Lee Lufkin, when they meet in Europe during Academic study in the 1890s. In the first half of the twentieth century, they married, lived, and worked in the vibrant atmosphere of the city of Boston. Over the next forty years the couple traveled, collected antiques, cultivated elaborate terraced gardens in New Hampshire, and most importantly painted together sharing a kinesthetic relationship based in their mutual respect for one another and a shared love of art.
