PARTICIPANTS AT BLOGGING WHILE BROWN 2009 IN CHICAGO, IL.

Where Education and Collaboration Leads to Innovation!
Blogging While Brown 2010 will be in Washington, DC June 18-19, 2010 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. This year’s conference is shaping up to be our largest conference to date. We started the conference two years ago in response to widespread dissatisfaction among Bloggers of color with the amount of diversity at other social media conferences. For the past two years, the conference has featured speakers from some of the most popular independently-run Black blogs, some of which receive millions of unique page visits a month.

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release February 1, 2010 Contact: Aminah Hanan [email protected] 512-853-8686 Bloggers of Color set to gather for largest conference ever ‘Blogging While Brown’ to be held June 18-19 in Washington, DC Washington, DC---At a time when large social media conferences are struggling with issues of diversity and inclusion among their speakers and attendees, the Blogging While Brown conference continues to provide one of the largest lineups of Black social media experts  and serves as one of the largest gatherings of Black bloggers each year.  Blogging While Brown 2010 will be held in Washington, DC, June 18-19, 2010 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Since its initial conference launched two years ago, the conference has grown exponentially and this year’s conference promises to be the largest ever, even in the face of challenging economic conditions.  African Americans are embracing their roles as independent digital media content creators and are emerging as burgeoning class of media owners.   "Blogging While Brown is a must-go conference if you are looking for the next black leaders in American culture. If you're a blogger who happens to be African-American, this is the place to go to connect with and learn from those who have succeeded in the blogosphere,” said Cheryl Contee of Fisson Strategy and co-founder of the blog, Jack and Jill Politics. Contee is a member of the Blogging While Brown Advisory Committee. “For sponsors and media influentials, this is where the action is -- look no further to find the next generation influentials who already have strong, vital audiences who have flocked to build active, motivated communities online," Contee said. Conference organizers predict that this year’s conference will be the largest ever. “If the initial response to our Call for Ideas is any indication, this year’s conference will be our largest ever,” said Gina McCauley, the founder of the Blogging While Brown Conference.  This year the conference is once again expanding by adding a Blogging Day of Service. The conference organizers will be offering a free boot camp aimed at non-bloggers in the local community called the Beginning Blogger Boot Camp at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Public LIbrary. “Its our gift to our host community and a tangible manifestation of our goal to live in a world where everyone can blog,” McCauley said.

WHY BLOGGING WHILE BROWN?

“Now you might ask yourself, isn't that the kind of stuff all bloggers would like to learn?  What's the point of having a blogging conference for just people of color? The answer is, it's an opportunity for people of color bloggers to bond with a group of blogging peers who often face the same challenges as they do.  These were people of color, energized and enthusiastic about the internet and technology, and bursting with ideas to explore its power.  An additional benefit, and no less important, is it allows those people of color who write about politics and social change to start building a formal or informal network that can be mobilized to influence public policy.”  Megan’s Minute

2009 ATTENDEE REACTIONS “The conference was great! It was intimate enough to allow some real, meaningful conversations and diverse enough (in experience) to learn some things from a lot of angles.” Fredric Mitchell of Bright Plum
“I have to say that I LOVED the Blogging While Brown Conference. It was so refreshing being around people who were doing similar things as me and who looked like me. Plus, for once, I didn't have to spend most conversations explaining Twitter and other tools to people. We ALL got it. The people were all so positive too. Best thing about the conference though, was putting a face to all those words I've been reading for years. Meeting some of my favorite bloggers in person was the best part about it all. And to find out that they are just as awesome in person (if not more) was dope! The Blogging While Brown Conference is one of the ones I will be making an annual trip (by God's grace). See y'all in 2010. We're voting now on what city it should be in. My vote is DC.” Awesomely Luvvie “I’ll say it again, the energy was fantastic. We ate, talked together and got to know one another. All the important relationship building necessary for a great meetup over the next day and the follow through after this weekend began in earnest this great evening.” Marty BLOGs It was fantastic and I had an everbetter-than-expected time. It was probably twice as big this year as last year. It was cool to be a mentor to other bloggers while meeting bloggers I look up to like Afrobella and Concrete Loop. Cheryl Contee of Jack and Jill Politics

“It’s been almost two weeks since the best conference weekend ever, and I swear I’m still feeling the afterglow. “ Afrobella
