Greats such as Vladimir Feltsman, Emanuel Ax, Jon Nakamatsu, Kathryn Stott and many others have graced the Lied stage in just the last few years and enriched the Nebraska community with their virtuosic performances. In response to this history of exemplary piano performances, patrons of the Lied Center who are passionate about the art of piano came together to support a Lied Center Piano Series starting in our 13/14 season. This support allows the Lied to present multiple pianists in the season and provides funding to do extensive marketing to new audiences in the community to increase audience size and artist exposure. This season the Lied Center Piano Series consists of the three performances listed below, which includes one Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra performance. We would like to thank the following patrons for their generous support of the Lied Center Piano Series for the 13/14 season:

The Lied Center has been pursuing The Cleveland Orchestra for many years due to its unmatched reputation and unparalleled quality of performance. As one of the top two orchestras in the country and with over 100 members, we knew that presenting such a renowned group of musicians would take a tremendous amount of support from the community. This support materialized through five couples who became the Conductor’s Circle. Their donations have led to The Cleveland Orchestra making their Nebraska debut on the Lied stage, and to leading members of the orchestra providing life-changing master classes for UNL students. These generous individuals have truly transformed lives and the Lied Center with their donations. Thank you to the members of the Conductor’s Circle who made the performance by The Cleveland Orchestra possible:

MISSION and vision

The Lied Center transforms the lives of Nebraskans through the performing arts.
The Lied Center for Performing Arts opened in 1990 through the generosity of the Lied Foundation Trust and many other dedicated individuals, organizations and businesses. It was the first major gift of the Lied Foundation Trust and was built in memory of Ernst F. Lied’s parents, Ernst M. and Ida K. Lied. Since Ernst Lied’s death in 1980, Christina Hixson, appointed executrix of his estate, has served as the Lied Foundation’s sole trustee, providing exceptional support for: • Presentations of artists of great distinction in all art forms and genres, from Nebraska and around the world, • Engaging Nebraskans with exceptional experiences, • Providing first-hand arts education for youth and university students, • Revitalizing and improving the Lied facility, • Creating new artistic works contributing to culture worldwide, • Celebrating creativity, discovery and diversity.

it gets better

Truly one of the world’s greatest in modern dance, Martha Graham Dance Company is in a class all its own. The Lied performance will feature Graham’s masterpiece, Appalachian Spring, with music by Aaron Copland, described as one of the seven wonders of the artistic universe.

This two-person show is designed to pay special tribute to the legendary Grande Dame of the Dance, Martha Graham. As ‘La Graham,’ Richard Move hosts an evening of witty, poetic, and educational monologues and dances illuminating Graham’s unparalleled career, work, and groundbreaking contribution to 20th Century art and thought. In a separate event, Move will also be screening a new original film about Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta. Date & time TBA.

The It Gets Better Project™ was launched in September 2010, when Dan Savage uploaded the first it gets better video to YouTube, igniting a worldwide response. The team at the It Gets Better Project is now excited to partner with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles and Speak Theater Arts to bring to the stage a message of hope for young people subjected to bullying.

INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTS SYMPOSIUM

The Interdisciplinary Arts Symposium is sponsored by the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, presented, in part, by the Lied Center for Performing Arts, and funded, in part, by the Hixson-Lied Endowment.

“This workshop encourageD kinesthetic learning AND fit my The performing arts brought World War II to modern day for students’ needs students and teachers in the spring of 2013. Based on a novel of the same name, the fictional play Hitler’s Daughter examined so well.” what life might be like if Hitler had a daughter.
Teaching artists Tammy Meneghini and Sarah McKinstry-Brown created pre- and post-show experiences for teachers and middle school students that were designed to illuminate social issues and history surrounding World War II. Meneghini, a master of movement, involved teachers in theater exercises using strategies such as “tableau” — frozen scenes that capture different tones and interpretations in the text. She used these diverse arts integration exercises to help teachers personally explore the powerful questions raised by this play. McKinstry-Brown connected poetry to the play for 150 students in post-show visits to Goodrich and Mickle Middle Schools in Lincoln, NE. Introducing students to persona/mask poems, McKinstry-Brown urged students to explore the different voices of the Holocaust. Taking perspectives as varying as a victim of the Holocaust to the ground of a concentration camp, students developed a deeper sense of how World War II connected to their own lives.

HITLER’S DAUGHTER

Kevin Spencer has no rivals when it comes to impacting an entire school district and community beyond the stage. Over 1000 students, teachers and community members in Lincoln participated in Spencer’s Hocus Focus program, and experienced the power of magic, first-hand. Geared toward students with educational challenges such as ADHD and Autism, Hocus Focus inspires confidence and self-efficacy while also teaching lessons in critical thinking, sequencing, and problem solving through the very tangible and visible means of a simple magic trick. The Lied Center partnered with area education organizations, bringing Hocus Focus to eight Lincoln schools. During inclassroom visits, students learned how to connect two paper clips together by touching them only with the edge of a dollar bill, and how to make rubber bands magically jump from one finger to the next. On the day of the show, performing to a “full-house,” Spencer was swarmed by young kids for autographs, and rallied with 200 kids and families attending a post-show event sponsored by Family Service of Nebraska.

KEVIN SPEN Minnesota CER playwrights Jim Stowell and Jessica Zuehlke, of the original highly acclaimed Church Basement Ladies, visited two Lincoln churches in December 2013.
The playwrights visited Trinity United Methodist Church in Village Gardens for a Sunday afternoon women’s Christmas tea and the First United Methodist Church’s Sunday evening potluck dinner. The churches provided incomparable venues for storytelling experiences inspired by aprons, food, church basement kitchens and the women who worked in them. At the Christmas Tea, three generations of men and women gathered to sing, eat, cry and tell stories about specific food and the love that was an integral part of life in the 20th century. At the potluck dinner, Wesleyan college students, church elders and community members shared common experiences in cooking. All were inspired by the images of old-time aprons — the serving apron, the coverall apron, the standard Lutheran apron, a gingham checked apron, rick rack apron, handkerchief apron and the dish towel apron!

In 12/13, Utah’s Repertory Dance Theatre (RDT), jazz singer Jackie Allen, and Andean music group Kusi Taki presented 19 public performances and student matinees as part of the Arts Across Nebraska program. In total, the program reached 7,391 people throughout the state. The program has an excellent record of introducing students to the power of the performing arts. In 12/13, approximately 62% of participating students experienced a professional modern dance company for the first time in their lives through the Arts Across Nebraska tour by Repertory Dance Theatre (RDT). Approximately 73% of all participants were more interested in the performing arts and/or dance after the tour. In preparation of the tour, the Lied Center organized a week-long summer dance course with instructors from RDT. Twenty-nine students from across the state participated in the course, during which they created an original dance piece inspired by legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham. The students performed this piece as part of RDT’s public performance in their home communities during the company’s Arts Across Nebraska tour. For the 13/14 season, the program will tour three artist groups, Angels Theatre Company’s What The Wind Taught Me, written by Becky Key Boesen and commissioned by the Lied Center for Performing Arts, Jill Anderson’s Celtic Cabaret and Donna Baddeley’s Music on the Trail. Revitalizing Nebraska’s Home for the Arts

As the Lied Center approaches its 25th Anniversary, we are revitalizing the venue to ensure that our world class performing arts center has a bright legacy for future generations. Johnny Carson was a founding contributor in the creation of the Lied Center. His foundation is now stepping forward with a $571,500 grant to revitalize the space that bears his name. Construction will begin in summer of 2014 and be completed in fall of 2014. The remodeling of the venue will include a completely redesigned entrance and lobby along with a new theater floor in the black box. The lobby space will be greatly expanded. The Lied’s Carson Theater is home to over 100 events annually, ranging from professional theater presentations and dance concerts to youth programs, University of Nebraska student performances and special events.

This space is one of Lincoln’s finest theatrical event venues and one of the Lied’s most popular event spaces used by community performing arts groups. This revitalization is just one of many updates at the Lied Center. The Lied Commons expansion was dedicated in October of 2012. Over 7 million dollars of revitalization updates will take place at the Lied. Improvements to the Lied Center are only made possible by the generous support of contributing foundations and the community. If you would like to play a role in revitalizing the Lied, please contact Marissa Gill-Keyzer at 402.472.4099 or [email protected] to learn more.
