AIR CONDITIONING AND VENTILATION
REPORT 1
Course Code : CB 302 : Building Services
Practical 2
Title : Air Filter Services Experiment

INTRODUCTION
Impurities in the air caused problems for consumers. In addition, impurities can cause an air
conditioning system is not functioning properly. All impurities such as dust and smoke or metal
fragments that exist in the air will be resolved by installing the air filter on the surface of the
evaporator.Evaporator will absorb heat from the room and indirectly it also absorbs impurities
through ahe air filter.Impurities that are blocking the air filter will reduse air flow rate and
reduce the heat absorption capacity.

DEFINITION OF FILTER
A component of most systems in which air is used for industrial processes, for ventilation, or for
comfort air conditioning. The function of an air filter is to reduce the concentration of solid
particles in the airstream to a level that can be tolerated by the process or space occupancy
purpose.
Solid particles in the airstream range in size from 0.01 micrometer to objects that can be caught
by ordinary fly screens, such as lint, feathers, and insects. The particles generally include soot,
ash, soil, lint, and smoke, but may include almost any organic or inorganic material, even
bacteria and mold spores. This wide variety of airborne contaminants, added to the diversity of
systems in which air filters are used, makes it impossible to have one type that is best for all
applications.
Three basic types of air filters are in common use: viscous impingement, dry, and electronic.
The principles employed by these filters in removing airborne solids are viscous impingement,
interception, impaction, diffusion, and electrostatic precipitation. Some filters utilize only one
of these principles; others employ combinations. A fourth method, inertial separation, is finding
increasing use as a result of the construction boom throughout most of the Middle East.

TYPE OF FILTER
1.Pleated Fiberglass Disposable Filters
Pleated fiberglass disposable filters have different specification to fit particular home and
commercial air conditioning units. Using a filter size not meant for the air conditioning units
puts more demand on the system and can increase maintenance. Filters with pleated fiberglass
have tightly woven materials to effectively catch dust particles and are larger than conventional
filters.

2.Conventional Fiberglass Disposable Filters
Typically, commercial, industrial and home air conditioning units use conventional fiberglass
disposable filters. Cleaning the filter isn't necessary since the adhesive coating collects the dust,
and you can throw the product in the trash. Rinsing a fiberglass disposable filter can damage
the filter's ability to remove particles in the air. This type of filter is readily available and is less
expensive than other filters.

3.Electrostatic Filters
Electrostatic filters come in numerous variations. Allergy-free air condition filters are
electrostatic filters. You need to clean the electrostatic filters frequently. Sizes available include
1 and 2 inches. When air passes through the filter, it works by producing a static charge that
collects the particles.

4.Carbon Filters
Carbon filters are filters that have activated carbon inside that absorbs odors and various
impurities. This type of filter is available in a variety of sizes and works well in homes with pets.

5.Electronic Filters
Electronic filter need cleaning every six months. Electricity powers the filter. The filters have a
prefilter inside that accumulates the dust particles from the air. The units typically can hang on
a wall.
APPARATUS AND TOOLS :
Air Handling Unit,Water hose, screw driver and scouting.

PROCEDURES :
1.The power supply on the control panel must close.
2.With scouting and pull out the wall, open the screws from the wall AHU.
3.Check tools in AHU units that are in good condition.
4.In Air Handling Unit remove the air filter.
5.In the vertical hold the air filter and to remove the dust and dirt spray with water.
6.Starting from the top to the bottom of the filter to cleaned it.
7.Dry air filter back wash washed.
8.Install all equipment to normal.
