Alcohol is a depressant drug widely used in Australian society and all over the world. It is
consumed in a social situation, for celebrating and socialising (Dassa, 2013). Alcohol also
presents many problems, “The misuse of alcohol represents one of the leading causes of
preventable death, illness and injury in many societies throughout the world” (Health WA,
2013). Alcohol misuse can lead to short-term problems like alcohol poisoning, accidents and
injuries, regrettable behaviour and violence (NHS Choices, 2013).Long-term effects include
heart disease, stroke and liver cancer (NHS Choices, 2013).
Alcohol has been known to reduce reaction time (Tzambazis, 2000), clumsiness,
coordination and oxygen in the body. Alcohol increases dehydration and clumsiness. Having
these effects could prove very disadvantageous in a sporting scenario. “Alcohol in your
system is detrimental to any kind of fitness activity” (Yeager, 2012). Alcohol is most
detrimental to any fitness activity due to alcohol depleting water and nutrients in your body.
Water and nutrients are vital to sports activities as they fuel are body (Yearger, 2012).
Alcohol slows down the body, “It slows down activity in the central nervous system,
including the brain” (Australian Institute of Sport, 2013).
