Learning Outcome: Analytical Inquiry The artifact titled “Evaluation Proposal: The Chicago Center Program” most directly aligns with the Analytical Inquiry program learning outcome. This evaluation proposal was the semester-long project of “ELPS 431: Evaluation in Higher Education” which focused on the program for which I am a graduate assistant. Last year as a first-year student in the higher education program, I would hear about “eval” from second-year students and even though I did not know anything about the course, I dreaded taking it simply because I heard it was difficult. By the end of this project I felt a new investment in the success of this program and my commitment to better understanding and defining the learning outcomes intended for my students. The exercise of completing this assignment which included reporting on the history of the program, identifying stakeholders, goals and contextual circumstances in addition to creating quantitative and qualitative methods was tedious, and at times frustrating, but the end result was immense improvement in my analytical skills. This course dedicated to evaluation has provided me with skills in creating surveys and collecting data to continually improve various programs in higher education. One of the unique tasks that my partner and I had to navigate during this project was writing survey and interview questions for an international audience. While some of the students in the Chicago Center Program studied abroad as high school students in Englishspeaking countries, other students had never been abroad before this experience in Chicago. When designing our questions for this project, my partner and I did additional research on evaluation design for this specific population. Overall we were able to provide key stakeholders of the Chicago Center Program with an evaluation plan that will hopefully be implemented in future semesters and will start rich conversations around how to improve this new program through expansion and immersion experiences for international students.
