It began as the Carnegie Technical Schools, founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1900. In 1912, the school became Carnegie Institute of Technology and began granting four-year degrees. In 1967, the Carnegie Institute of Technology merged with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research to form Carnegie Mellon University. The Universitys 140-acre main campus is three miles from Downtown Pittsburgh and abuts the campus of the University of Pittsburgh in the city’s Oakland neighborhood. The University has seven colleges and schools: the Carnegie Institute of Technology (engineering), the College of Fine Arts, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Mellon College of Science, the Tepper School of Business, the School of Computer Science, and the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management. Since its inception, Carnegie Mellon has grown into a world-renowned institution, with numerous programs that are frequently ranked among the best in the world. In the most recent release of the Top 200 World Universities by Times Higher Education, Carnegie Mellon was ranked 20th overall and 7th in technology.[5] In the 2008 edition, U.S. News World Report ranked Carnegie Mellon’s undergraduate program 22nd in the nation amongst national research universities, and in the 2009 edition its graduate programs in Computer Science 4th, Engineering 7th, Business 17th, Public Affairs 10th, Fine Arts 7th and Psychology 9th. The university attracts students from all 50 U.S. states and 93 countries and was named one of the ”New Ivies” by Newsweek in 2006. He is also known for his speed and his powerful, accurate right-footed strike. He is considered Benfica’s and Portugal’s most renowned player and the first world-class African striker.[1] He was elected the 9th best footballer of the 20th century in a poll by the IFFHS.[2] Pel named Eusbio as one of the 125 best living footballers in his 2004 FIFA 100 list. In November 2003, to celebrate UEFA’s Jubilee, he was selected as the Golden Player of Portugal by the Portuguese Football Federation as their most outstanding player of the past 50 years.[3] Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto The Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) is the engineering faculty of the University of Porto, in Porto, Portugal. With its origins in the 18th century, the institution became known as Faculdade de Engenharia in 1926. Physics Engineering ICFP Programming Contest The ICFP Programming Contest is an international programming competition held annually since 1998, with results announced at the International Conference on Functional Programming. Teams may be of any size and any programming language(s) may be used. There is also no entry fee. Participants have 72 hours to complete and submit their entry over the Internet. There is often also a 24-hour lightning division. The winners reserve ”bragging rights” to claim that their language is ”the programming tool of choice for discriminating hackers”. As such, one of the competition’s goals is to showcase the capabilities of the contestants’ favourite programming languages and tools. Previous first prize winners have used Haskell, Objective Caml, C++ and Cilk. Massachusetts Institute of Technology The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private university located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. MIT has five schools and one college, containing 32 academic departments,[6] with a strong emphasis on scientific and technological research. MIT is one of two private land-grant universities and is also a sea grant and space grant university. MIT was founded by William Barton Rogers in 1861 in response to the increasing industrialization of the United States. Although based upon German and French polytechnic models of an institute of technology, MIT’s founding philosophy of ”learning by doing” made it an early pioneer in the use of laboratory instruction,[7] undergraduate research, and progressive architectural styles. As a federally funded research and development center during World War II, MIT scientists developed defense-related technologies that would later become integral to computers, radar, and inertial guidance. After the war, MIT’s reputation expanded beyond its core competencies in science and engineering into the social sciences including economics, linguistics, political science, and management. MIT’s endowment and annual research expenditures are among the largest of any American university.[8] MIT graduates and faculty are noted for their technical acumen,[3][9][10] entrepreneurial vigor,[11][12] and irreverence.[13][14][15]
