Surfactants were and in part are among the th e most dramatic enigmas and hidden vil villains lains of environmental science. Until this book was published, surfactants were wrongly considered as relatively non-toxic, nonhazardous chemicals. Surfactants are the key components of laundry detergents, detergents and washing liquids for washing many things: cars, c ars, dishes, pipes. Surfactants are the key components o of  f  body care products, shampoos. Surfactants are key components of foam-producing products. Surfactants are key components of waste waters of many industries. Until this book was published, surfactants were considered as relatively safe. Surfactants Surfactants were considered as chemicals less dangerous than heavy metals or pesticides. The book by Dr. S. Ostroumov was the first monograph that changed that. The innovation made in the book: the monograph demonstrated that surfactants and dete detergents rgents are of real environmental hazard. Dr. Sergei A. Ostroumov is an internationally known expert on environmental hazards from detergents. Member of 6 editorial boards of scientific journals in 5 countries. The book summarizes the 20-year research done by the author and over 90 author's research publications in many Russian and international editions as well as hundreds of publications of other scientists. The book contains new detailed information on the result resultss of the author’s studies of the biological effects of  synthetic surfactants and detergents on autotrophic and heterotrophic, prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. The chemicals included (1) anionic surfactants, (2) non-ionic surfactants, (3) cationic surfactants, as well as (4) several types of detergents (chemical mixtures). The freshwater and marine organisms studied included: (1)  Bacteria and cyanobacteria, (2) algae, (3) flagellates, (4) seedlings of higher plants, (5) invertebrates (mollusks, annelids). The results are discussed and analyzed in connection with: (1)  new priorities in assessing the ecological hazards of chemical pollution and xenobiotics on the biosphere and hydrosphere; (2)  studying water purification in aquatic ecosystems; (3)  setting new priorities in the area of environmental protection. The book is of interest to scientists who conduct research in relevant areas of: ecology, limnology, oceanography, hydrobiology, environmental sciences, water sciences, geosciences, the science of the biosphere and global change, ecotoxicology.
