Business Ethics Case Study

The five codes of conduct that I feel are important to observe are the following:
1. Advocate, uphold and defend the individual’s right to privacy and the doctrine of confidentiality in the use and disclosure of information.

2. Put service and the health and welfare of persons before self-interest and conduct themselves in the practice of the profession so as to bring honor to themselves, their peers and to the health information management profession. Preserves protect and secure personal health information in any form or medium and hold in the highest regard the contents of the records and other information of confidential nature, taking into account the applicable statues and regulations.

3. Refuse to participate in or conceal unethical practices or procedures.

4. Represent the profession accurately to the public.

5. Respect the inherent dignity and worth of every person.

1. What internal forces impact Kathleen’s concerns in this case?

Kathleen is a Medical Assistant and she to respect the confidential information obtained for the Clinic. She has been given the code of ethics and she to uphold the honor and high principles of the profession. She is to do her job and get the information that is need for the nurse. I read the AAMA code of ethics and as I

read them and the case at hand it gave me a better understanding of what Kathleen Code of Ethics were as a Medical Assistant.

2. What external forces impact Kathleen’s concerns in this case? Kathleen is affected by this because her father is a patient of Dr. Obrien. She has viewed all the files and notice that the doctors’ track record was not in good standing doing prostate surgery. Kathleen father is someone special to her and she feels that is important for him to get a second opinion about the surgery, she doesn’t want to lose her father.

3. What are the legal issues need to consider regarding this case?

The Legality of the case is that Dr. O’Brien could lose his license and the Clinic could be sued. It already stated that the chief of staff, Dr. Williams needed to review the records because of the patient death following surgery. Kathleen could lose her job and be black balled out the medical field.

4. Discuss the case form both Kathleen and Kaylee’s point of view. What would you do if you were in either of their positions? Looking at from Kathleen view, I would have done the same thing without breaching any information about other patients. I would have told my father in a more private setting. Kaylee on the other is also correct because she doing her duty as a nurse and that is to uphold the Code of Ethics. If I were in Kaylee’s position I would wait until have work hrs and discuss the matter with Kathleen and let her know that I understand what her father is going through and tell her I respect what you did. I also would tell her that this is a warning and if this happens again there will be consequences.

5. Do an internet search for a Code of ethics and explain how this case relates to the guidelines you found. (include a copy of the Code of Ethics with your submission). The definition of Code and Ethics is the following: Written guidelines issued by an organization to its workers and management, to help them conduct their actions in accordance with its primary values and ethical standards. They are written guidelines for workers to uphold the duties of their job. The wording changes as your change your job. They all state that you are to keep these values and ethical standards with you in life.
