One year has passed since the Chamber board offered and I accepted this position as Executive Director. There has been a lot of learning experiences in the last year as well as some very good times. We started the fiscal year with the Golf Tournament; we also experienced a couple of new events, Blues Brews and BBQ and the Sage Festival as well as finishing off the year with the Membership dinner. Along the way, we enjoyed the Black History Celebration, The Farmers Appreciation Dinner and First Responders Banquet. Smaller events like ribboncuttings, business after hours and coffee & donuts with the Town of Windsor filled in the space between events. It has been an enjoyable first twelve months. One of the items that has been slow to get up and running is the newsletter. Alas! The newsletter is here. The chamber has entered into an agreement with the Northeast Leadership Academy (NELA) for this summer to help us produce the newsletter and create a template to go by that will allow us to continue to produce a newsletter in a quarterly fashion. So we are open to any and all suggestions and comments on this newsletter and how we can make it better to serve our members. We would like to thank both Karen Lea Branch and Tawanda Smallwood for their hard work and time.

On May 31st and June 1st, the first Sage Festival was held in downtown Windsor. Approximately one thousand people attended on Friday night and a few hundred came through on Saturday. Festival attendees enjoyed the music of the Lees (Andy, Linda, and Bud), Johnny White and the Elite Band, and Nance Joyner and Early Station. Bertie County Rescue Squad and numerous vendors served good food. Avoca, Inc. did a great job of telling us about clary sage and how it is farmed and used in everyday products such as laundry detergent and perfumes. If you did not catch a wagon ride through town pulled by horses, then you missed a great opportunity. Antiques and new farm equipment were on display for the on-lookers. Special thanks to all of the volunteers who helped make this festival a success.

The Membership Dinner was held at the Bertie Senior Center on June 20, 2013. Each member of the Chamber could invite one person and any additional people were ten dollars per person. The entertainment was provided by one of our newest members, Heber Coltrain of Roanoke Outdoor Adventures. The meal was served by the Town House. The Kenan Institute of UNC-Chapel Hill School of Business presented the program for the evening. They are working with Bertie County to provide a strategic plan of economic development for our area.

July 3rd Celebration
Our July 3rd Celebration was a little wet and soggy but that did not stop the crowd from coming out. With only a few vendors cancelling because of the weather there was some great food to eat. Chef Mitchell Spivey of Hammerheads and his crew delivered with their tasty treats. Gaylon Pope and Sweetwater entertained the crowd until the fireworks lit up the sky.

Fantastic Fireworks sponsored by the Town of Windsor.

The Chamber wishes to thank Bunn’s BBQ for 75 years of service! The building dates back to the mid – 1800’s. It was originally a doctor’s office and later became a Texaco filling station from 1900 to 1920. In 1938, it became the home of Bunn’s BBQ. Wilber and Grace Russell purchased the restaurant from Bunn Weathers in 1969. Brothers Randy and Russ Russell, the present owners, are still assisted from time to time by their mother Grace Russell. Bunn’s has withstood nine different floods dating back to 1971. In the late 80’s a dining room was added to accommodate more people. When asked why do you keep rebuilding, Randy simply stated that there are not too many places to go and there are patrons in their 70s who remember their parents bringing them to Bunn’s. Bunn’s motto is good food, good service and good prices. Janice Dukes and Karen Barnes have been long time employees at Bunn’s. Bunn’s still cooks their barbeque on site along with their homemade coleslaw and cornbread. On Tuesdays they offer barbeque chicken and Thursdays they have chicken and pastry. Bunn’s has had travelers from all over the world including Australia, England, Russia, India, Philippines, and Japan to help them celebrate 75 years of service. Stop by 127 N King Street, Windsor Monday thru Saturday for your chance to enjoy a great meal and sign their birthday card.
