Summer Program
The Intensive Chinese Language and Chinese Culture study program is a sixweek, 5 or 6 credit intensive Mandarin Chinese language program and 3 credit Chinese culture course taught during the tour of Beijing and Confucius’ hometown of Qufu. This program offers an opportunity for all students, at any Chinese language levels, to explore the Chinese language, culture, literature, history, art, theatre, business, society, and Chinese lifestyle. Prior to departure, students will attend a one-day orientation taught by Chinese professor, Dr. Hailin Zhou. Upon arrival, students will participate in an intensive, 4-week, 80-hour intensive language program at Shanghai Jiaotong University followed by a 12-day Introduction to Chinese Culture through field trips and cultural immersion in

Housing & Meals
Students will live in Shanghai Jiaotong University’s International Student Hotel (Boxuelou) with breakfast and maid service included during the 4 -week, 80-hour intensive language program. The hotel is centrally located in Xujiahui, Shanghai’s bustling downtown. Students can choose to purchase meals at Jiaotong’s cafeteria or dine off campus where there are a wide range of inexpensive restaurants, cafes, dumpling & noodle shops, and buffet options that are mouthwatering delicious!

Cultural Immersion Tour The two-week tour following the academic program starts from Shanghai and proceeds to Shandong province where we visit Confucius Temple, Mount Tai, Qingdao (famous for its beach and brewery), Yantai (vineyard), and Penglai Island, a center of Taoist culture. Next stop is Beijing where we tour the Forbidden City, the Summer Palaces of Beijing and Chengde, and walk the Great Wall of China. The Chinese Culture Course will be taught during the tour; further details can be viewed online.

Academic Details
All students choose either two courses: one 5-credit or 6-credit course, and one 3-credit Chinese culture course, for a total of 8-9 credits. Students choose courses based on Chinese language level and prerequisites for coursework. CHI 1111 Basic Chinese I, 6 credits CHI 1112 Basic Chinese II, 6 credits CHI 1121 Intermediate Chinese I, 5 credits CHI 1122 Intermediate Chinese II, 5 credits CHI 1131/1132 Advanced Chines I & II, 6 credits CHI 2143 Chinese Culture, 3 credits The above courses will also satisfy the language requirement, Global Studies major, and East Asian Concentration requirement.

July 7: Arrive in Shanghai July 8 - August 1: Intensive language program (or “academic program”) August 2 - Aug 13: China Culture Tour August 13:Depart Beijing to Philadelphia.
