Shalaby 1

Mohamed Shalaby Ms. Simkins English 099 24 October 2013 Dropout Nation Topic 2 A week ago, while I was smoking my cigarette between classes, I watched my fellow students at my university walking fast, for most of them were trying to get to their classes before the next class started. And I thought about that scene, and I wondered what motivated them to rush so quickly to their classes like that. What are their goals? Certainly, some of them will be in a higher positions than other, and some of them will be responsible of the public through their careers; furthermore, I thought maybe one of them would be the next president of the United States of America one day, so I thought it all depended on how well they would do, and how lucky they would be. I also wondered about myself, and why I was here at the college, and what my goals to be here were. I think I have the answers to these question now. After I started attending classes for only less than one semester, what I have learned so far is priceless; moreover, I would have never learned that much of information in that short period outside the walls of the college in years to come. All I had known, before I started attending classes at CCSU that, I wanted to improve my life

and to get a better job. A job that I really would love to do rather than have to do. However, I learned that being in college is bigger than just that, it is a journey of long life learning I have just begun. My goals now is bigger than just having a better job. My goals now is to be a knowledge seeker without wasting time on worthless things, and I want to be motivated to know the unknown to me right now, and how it was discovered. And I want to be able to analyze the surrounding differently. Definitely, I am certain college will help me to know what is going on in the world, and it will change my lifestyle. For example, in the Economics class I have learned a lot of information that I would hear about it on the news all the time; for instance, I have learned about the budget; the deficit; the balanced budget, the open market and others. These are things I heard about them on the news all the time; however, I had the least idea what they meant. Now I understand what they are. Now, I can actually criticize the government policies sometimes; nevertheless, I feel sorry for the government’s officials sometimes because they have to deal with so much burden. Although I am from the Middle East, I have learned so much in the Middle East History class I am taking this semester. In fact, I have learned more information about my people’s history than most the public who live in the Middle East itself, just by attending one class at my college. My writing skills used to be next to nothing; however here I am writing a long essay. Although I still need a lot of improvement, I can feel it: I have learned a lot because of my English class. College is not only for a degree or a diploma I can frame and be proud of, nor is it only for getting a better job. Attending classes at the university teaches you a life’s attitude: I speak better, I read better, and I write better; I learn how to think well about

how any data was transformed to information. I learn how to organize my time, and how I shouldn’t waste time on worthless things.
