1930 R St. Hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday; noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Phone: 323-7219 “One of the things she was most passionate about was our ability to collect, which is something we’ve not been able to do a lot of in the last few years, for mainly funding reasons,” Falke said. Donations totaling $48,000 helped with construction and paid for framing, conservation glass and matting for 20 pieces of art, she said. Workers knocked down walls and a storage closet to make space for the new section. The collection will change every six months, Falke said. It includes several watercolors, portraits, landscapes, and etchings. Brown was a strong advocate of youth participation in the arts and helped develop a docent program, said executive director Bernie Herman. She served as director of the new volunteer guild for two years and, thanks to her work, it grew from a few people to 80 active volunteers today, he said. It’s the highest honor a museum volunteer could wish for, and Ann Katherine Brown is a deserving recipient. The woman who shepherded the Bakersfield Museum of Art through tough financial times will be celebrated with the new Ann Katherine Brown Permanent Collection Gallery. Donors will be treated to a private reception kicking off the collection Friday evening. They’ll also get a look at a featured Rembrandt drawing. Brown, a longtime board member who died last year, was the glue that held the museum together in rough times, said marketing director Beth Pandol. “She always felt a permanent collection would be really important to have,” she said. “We don’t have a huge collection. What we have has mostly been in storage because we didn’t have anywhere to show it.” The Brown gallery will showcase the collection stored in the museum vaults, said curator

Brown died at age 71 of congestive heart failure, a complication of cancer, said her husband, Morton E. Brown. Brown was an artist herself and loved painting watercolor landscapes, including scenes of Yosemite and the California coast. She loved the bursts of color in the works of van Gogh

Feeling a bit peckish? Try “Another Dirt Sandwich.” It’s a graphic novel of the humorous persuasion with all the fixin’s: Swindling! Mustard! Birds wearing hats! It’s just chock-full of cartoony goodness. I am a 20-year-old local author celebrating the release of my newest book with a book-signing party at the Bakersfield Barnes & Noble on Saturday. The 100 page, full-color book is the first in a series chronicling the rambunctious ramblings of ostrich con man Tbyrd Fearlessness and his gullible rube-turned-sidekick Hopalong Cassowary in their search for fame and fortune,

Cuchi-cuchi to go on loosey in Kern
Charo brings her charm — and flamenco guitar — to Ridgecrest

Go to Bakersfield.com for more with the fabulous Charo. What’s your show like? ... The first part of the show, the musical program is a celebration of popular, super popular right now and spectacular Latin music. The second part of the program, it is classical and flamenco, performed with my guitar, beautiful masterpieces and the audience, if you believe in people that say they have multiple personality, they think, “How is it possible that cuchicuchi persona that is jumping and having fun and dancing salsa and singing can sit down on the stool, don’t move even a finger” — I mean, finger, yes (laughs), but the rest of my body is there together with the guitar and play that beautiful music. And that combination is completely the magic formula because then when the audience show their respect. Because everybody now know how difficult, how much discipline it require to perform any instrument. You are able to express your sexuality without becoming trashy. What advice do you have for young stars who struggle with that?
NAIL CARE • NAIL CARE • NAIL CARE

Having a conversation with Charo is like co-starring in a chase sequence. Don’t panic if she grabs the wheel from you and steers into oncoming traffic, flooding the car with blond hair and sequins and her adorable, rapid-fire mix of Spanish and fractured English. Try like hell to hold on. Charo wants you to know she’s more than her cuchicuchi catchphrase, talk show appearances or guest spots on ’70s and ’80s shows such as “The Love Boat,” or her turn on “The Surreal Life.” Trained in classical and flamenco guitar, she says she’s found the “magic formula” for the perfect show. And that’s what the star has promised for eastern Kern this evening, when she’ll perform in a sold-out show sponsored by the Indian Wells Valley Concert Association at Burroughs High School auditorium. In Ridgecrest, of all places. “Well, why not?” said Carl Helmick, the association’s business manager. The organization got in touch with Charo’s management through a talent-booking conference for Western U.S. associations like his, he said. The concert series, now in its 61st season, has featured such performers as The Vienna Boys' Choir and smaller-name classical artists. Charo spoke to The Californian from her home in Beverly Hills. The following was edited for length. Charo: I am excited to go to this performing arts center ... in Ridgecrest because I have such a bright, bright new show. (Sirens blare in the background) You see, you hear all of the eeeeee? (Makes siren sounds) What did you do, Charo? I was fighting eggs. (Laughs) You were fighting what? I was frying eggs and the fire department probably seen that the house is on fire. (Laughs) No, the fire department is our neighbor. Those suckers, 24 hour are on duty. It is a lot of excitement here in Beverly Hills. It is like everybody in Beverly Hills, their house is on fire. (Laughs)

I love really beautiful costume and exotic dance and I am the one that created the cuchi-cuchi movement that is getting very ... thank God, Shakira and Beyonce because of me. That movement, you believe that in 1970 to ’73 lot of people were having heart attack, “What is she doing?” (Laughs) But always you got to know that it’s class. You can dance for free, you can do whatever, but there is always the saying, “My grandma is watching me, my mother is watching me and a little kid may be watching me.” Let the three of them sit down without thinking any minute, “I want to cover the eyes of my kid or I’m gonna get shock.” I’m going to have fun, because that’s what (I’m) selling: excitement, energy, passion, but class. And if you have that in your mind, you don’t go trashy. That’s the difference. Trashy people,

food, it was like a meal not an appetizer. Most places have nasty potato skins and chicken strips half off, but the steak kabobs were enough to fill me up and they tasted excellent. — staceyg I wanted to try that raspberry lemon drop I read about in the magazine. It was really good. I went in just to have a drink but decided to have a piece of cheesecake with it. Both were exceptional and I highly recommend both. — michelleg If you want all the benefits of great food and space to move your elbows, try going there for lunch. We usually head there once a month or so for lunch and there’s always room at the inn. — bakoblue Things that I’ve ordered here are the hamburger, the BBQ beef sandwich, the pasta, the steak, the chicken sandwich. All of these have been very good in their quality. You can also add a salad or soup to your entree without paying an arm and a leg, which is nice. — franky07 The kids menu is nice, but my daughter was feeling extra picky that day and only wanted a cheese quesadilla! They were very nice and made one for her. They really should put that on the menu cause it was great! — lexyadore

Take a look at what folks are saying about RJ’s:
Food was great. Tried the ribs and they were definitely mouthwatering!! Love the variety too. — dplivelich I had the rosemary chicken, which was pretty good. The service was also good, despite the fact that they were swamped that evening. We did have a slight delay with one of our entrees, but that was corrected fairly quick. — jewel1325 I have been to RJ’s only twice, and had a hamburger and fries both times. The first time my food was good, but too greasy. The second time was much better and less greasy. — bryanjackson Happy hour appetizers are awesome!!! Not just your average cheap

DINING OUT

THE BAKERSFIELD CALIFORNIAN E7

Juicy steak just as tempting during weekend breakfast
BY PETE TITTL
Contributing columnist e-mail: ptittl@bakersfield.com

One of the best things about weekends is the casual, social breakfast. If you’re lucky enough not to have to work, breakfast becomes again something you can savor, linger over, enjoy to its fullest with barely a glance at the clock. In Bakersfield we have a lot of solid weekend breakfast/brunch options, and now RJ’s at Riverlakes has jumped into the competition, which I think is a good thing. The 24th Street Cafe can’t serve everyone, and RJ’s has a completely different atmosphere, particularly if a major sporting event is going on. That big projection TV that almost turns the dining room into a small movie theater is exceptional. On the morning we visited it was an NBA game, but other TVs in the dining room were turned to extreme games competitions, luge races, college basketball — all sorts of things. For a sports junkie, being able to track all sorts of events at the same time is a

plus. Besides, the fantastic woodwork and tastefully painted walls of RJ’s look even better in the light of day. The menu has a nice variety, from chicken-fried steak with eggs to a real steak with eggs, a breakfast burrito, customized omelets (choose from 15 ingredients), and $3 bloody marys and mimosas. I went with the top sirloin with eggs ($14.99), while my companions selected the breakfast burrito ($8.99) and the breakfast sandwich ($8.99). All were solid, though the table was most enamored with my companion’s breakfast burrito. The eggs, in particular, were exceptionally fluffy, the pico de gallo salsa and tortilla also fresh-tasting and soft, and the bacon and cheddar cheese rounded out the experience. You could call it simple, but it’s beautiful in its simplicity and the kitchen’s execution. I ordered my steak with eggs because the menu bragged that the beef was fresh, never frozen and hand cut. I’m skeptical about the steak and eggs choice in most restaurants because, in

my experience, it’s usually an inferior cut of meat poorly prepared. But people tend not to be so discriminating in the morning, at least until they’ve had more coffee. Not so here. It was as tempting, juicy, tender and flavorful as any of the dinner steaks I’ve had at RJ’s. My only complaint was the breakfast potatoes served with it: deepfried chunks with a few stray bits of green pepper and green onion. Worthy of a fast-food restaurant, but not a good match with the rest of what we sampled. At first glance the breakfast sandwich looks like something you’d find at Jack In The Box, but they gave it the upscale treatment by carefully toasting the bun and including ham, bacon and a decent medium cheddar. The restaurant was about half full, but the service crew handled everything fine. There was a long wait for our food and no explanation at all from our server, who seemed to be AWOL. Despite that, I’d say we now have another weekend breakfast option that is worth a visit.

COVER STORY

E9
BABYFEST 2008: NOT JUST FOR MOMS

Lots and lots of cute little tots
Babies take center stage at event, but there’s plenty for the rest of the family as well
Californian staff writer e-mail: sbranco@bakersfield.com

BY SHELLIE BRANCO

t’s hard to choose the cutest baby in Kern County. It’s even harder to vote objectively when you’re related to the ankle-biter. That’s why the cutest kid will be chosen by drawing at BabyFEST 2008at the Kern County Fairgrounds Saturday. The event will feature a baby race, or “Diaper Derby,” a mom and tots fashion show, and informational seminars on topics such as car seat safety, nontoxic household cleaning products and family insurance. The kids can enjoy bounce houses, a petting zoo, and pony and train rides. This is the event’s first year. Organizer Marsha Bidwell, a parenting coach and birthing doula who owns The Doula Connection, wanted to bring her expertise to more than one mommy or daddy at a time. “You need an education to drive a car or do most any kind of a job, but there’s no experience or education necessary to have a baby,” she said. “Well, we’re gonna change that. Even though it’s called BabyFEST, it’s for kids of all ages, she added. Zealous moms were voting multiple times for their babies on the Web site of cute baby contest sponsor Baby Sightings, said Krystal Bond, owner of the local ultrasound company. That’s when it was decided to choose by drawing the cutest kid out of 70 entrants ages 2 and under, she said. The young winner will get four tickets to Disneyland, an outfit from children’s clothing store Spoiled Rotten, and his or her photo on the cover of the Bakersfield Kids’ Directory. Four runners-up will receive gift certificates to Spoiled Rotten, Bond said. The Rosedale Highway children’s boutique will show off its apparel on the runway. Spoiled Rotten carries clothing for babies to preteens, said owner Kristi Nikkel. Birthday shirts are one of her hottest items, she said. They feature the child’s numerical birthdate with her name and a flourish, such as a crown. One of the latest trends in maternity clothing is the BellaBand ($26), said Bond of Baby Sightings, which sells clothing for moms-to-be. It’s a stretchy Lycra band that resembles a layered tee. The BellaBand allows moms in pregnancy’s early stages to wear their normal clothes longer, until they can fit into larger maternity clothes. Bond also sells snarky tees for pregnant women, with sayings such as “Knocked Up” and “Pregnant, Not Fat.” The latest thing is the Daddy tee, as more fathers participate in their partner’s experience, she said. Their shirts might say “Pickles and Ice Cream Fetcher” or “Look What I Did.”

TV TONIGHT
“American Idol,” 8 to 9 p.m., Fox. It’s time for the first results show. Two men and two women will be out. “My Name Is Earl,” 8 to 9 p.m., NBC. The first new, poststrike episode is still six weeks away. For now, the show jumps back to its season-opener, with Earl as a new prisoner. “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and “Without a Trace,” 9 and 10 p.m., CBS. This reruns the two-parter that had Gil Grissom and Jack Malone working together. A body in Las Vegas may be a boy who disappeared in New York six years ago. “The Celebrity Apprentice,” 9 p.m., NBC. Last week, Donald Trump temporarily put the acerbic Piers Morgan and Omarosa together; the result was brutal. Complicating things, the goodguy team (led this time by Trace Adkins) lost; in a first, Trump

refused to fire anyone. Along the way, viewers were reminded of a fatal flaw: In the celebrity edition, rich friends can simply show up, tilting the results. We’ll see what happens tonight, when each team creates a home-shopping segment for QVC. “In Treatment,” 9:30 p.m., HBO. Early in the session, Paul gets word on Sophie, who took an overdose in his bathroom. Otherwise, this has Jake and Amy at war anew. “Lipstick Jungle,” 10:01 p.m., NBC. Battered by the book that depicted her as a bad mom, Wendy takes her daughter to a luncheon. Meanwhile, Nico tries to slow down her affair with a young man; Victory introduces her billionaire boyfriend to her friends. “Eli Stone,” 10:02 p.m., ABC. Last week, Eli broke up with his fiance, a beautiful lawyer who is also the boss’s daughter. Bummed

TONIGHT’S MUST-SEE: “Survivor,” 8 p.m., CBS. It’s possible to overthink things as the “fans” team proved last week. It could have voted out Chet Welch, who had bungled the challenge, leading to defeat. Or it could have chosen Kathy Sleckman, who annoys people. But Mikey Bortone started offering elaborate schemes. Joel Anderson counter schemed to weaken Bortone by dumping his friend, Mary Sartain. The plan worked — except the fans can’t afford to lose any good people. This week’s challenge, CBS says, involves a head-on, physical battle. TONIGHT’S MUST-SEE II:

“Lost,” 9 p.m., ABC. Last week’s episode (rerunning at 8 p.m.) included fierce and perplexing flash forwards. Sayid is a mainland hit man, taking orders from Ben. That still leaves one or two of the “Oceanic Six” to be revealed (Ben wasn’t on the plane, remember?). Meanwhile, there’s a Kate crisis: She needs information from a hostage (currently, the nasty Miles); that might give her trouble with Locke and Sawyer.

Other choices include:
“The Incredibles” (2004), 6 and 8:30 p.m., ABC Family. Here are two more chances to see the popular animated film about a family of superheroes.

Mr. Incredible from “The Incredibles,” 6 and 8:30 p.m. today on ABC Family. out about that tonight, he throws himself into helping someone who has emerged from a coma.

ADVICE, PUZZLES

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2008
By Kathy Mitchell & Marcy Sugar, syndicated columnists that Bryce’s family strongly disapproves of his relationship with you. Either they have asked him not to bring you around, or he thinks they will give you a hard time and lacks the courage to stand up for you. They also may believe he will not get a divorce as long as they keep you at a distance, and so far, they are right. This is what happens when you become involved with a married man, so decide what you are willing to settle for because this could be all there is. Dear Annie: I have a problem with a co-worker. “Lenny” is a downer, not only to me, but to everybody he works with. He’s negative, unhappy and resists any attempts to change. He’s still bitter about a girl who broke up with him three years ago. I don’t want to be mean, but I’m tired of hearing Lenny whine. I’d like to help him take charge of his life so he can resolve his problems — or at least stop complaining about them. What should I do? — Miserable Co-Worker Dear Miserable: You can tell Lenny he seems to complain a lot and probably doesn’t realize how negatively it comes across, but some people are chronic complainers and the best you can do is tune them out. “Fixing” them takes a lot of time and effort, and it only works if The Kvetch recognizes the need to change his behavior.

Annie’s Mailbox
Dear Annie: I have been in a relationship with “Bryce” for almost eight years. When we met, we were both in unhappy marriages. Bryce helped me financially and emotionally with my divorce, and also pulled me through the death of a beloved sister. He even purchased a house for my children and me to live in. My divorce was finalized four years ago. Bryce lives with my now-teenage children and me, and we all get along great. The problem is, Bryce refuses to introduce me to his family, all of whom live close by. He has a mother, brother, sister and a daughter in her early 30s. He still is not divorced, but keeps assuring me he will be “as soon as the smoke clears” with his family. I’m beginning to think he is never going to completely share his life with me, as if he isn’t certain I’m really what he wants. He assures me he loves me and that his living with me is proof, but it’s just not enough. I want to have a normal relationship that involves both families combined. I want to spend holidays and special occasions together instead of apart. By the way, he has met all the members of my large family and they like him, but some are beginning to wonder if he’s just jerking me around. Am I wasting my time here? — Confused in N.Y. Dear Confused: It’s obvious to us

Hints from Heloise
Dear Readers: Do you live in an apartment that doesn’t have a washing machine or dryer? Here are some hints to make launfry day a little easier: Sorting clothes is very important. Sort clothing before you leave! If you send someone else to do the laundry, this will make it easier. Don’t overstuff the washer, as clothes cannot get clean. Always use the correct amount of detergent according to directions — more is not better! Get plenty of change. Throughout the week or month, save quarters. Plastic containers are just right to hold detergent, powdered bleach and fabric softener. No messy measuring. It also prevents you from carrying large bottles or boxes around. Bring along hangers so that you can hang up items right from the dryer with no wrinkles, which means no ironing. To know which washers you are using, place large, colorful magnets on the machines to spot them easily. If you’re going to do laundry, why not wash comforters, blankets and other large items, since front-loading machines with no agitators are usually there? If you wash one large-item load each time, you will always have fresh bits and pieces. Hope these hints make your laundry experience better! If you have a favorite hint that makes doing laundry away from home easier, especially if you are a college students, we would love to hear from you! Send your hint to: [email protected] (put “laundry” in the subject line); fax to 210435-6473 (HELOISE); or mail to Heloise, P.O. Box 795000, San Antonio, TX 78279-5000, and we’ll print as many as we can on laundry 101. — Heloise

dummy’s ten for nine tricks in all. If West had K-10-8-7 of diamonds, he would capture South’s queen but couldn’t lead a heart effectively. South would then have time to set up a spade trick to make the contract.

By Frank Stewart, syndicated columnist

Must play low

I continue a series on “avoidance”: the technique of keeping a dangerous opponent out of the lead. At 3NT South wins the first heart with the ace. He is in no immediate danger but isn’t eager to see East get in and return a heart through the Q-10. South has seven top tricks — four clubs, two hearts and a diamond — and can easily get two more if diamonds break 3-2. But if he leads a diamond to finesse with dummy’s jack, East will win and return a heart, and South will go down as the cards lie. South succeeds with an avoidance play. He leads a diamond to the ace at Trick Two and returns a low diamond. East must play low; if he grabs his king, South is safe. South then takes the queen, leads a club to dummy and returns a spade. He eventually sets up

Daily question

You hold: S A Q 8 4 H J 9 5 4 2 D 9 C 9 6 3. Your partner opens one diamond, you respond one heart and he bids two clubs. The opponents pass. What do you say? Answer: This isn’t the contract of your dreams, but you must pass. Your partner has fewer than 19 points, hence game chances are nil. A further bid may court disaster. You’d need about 11 points to try 2NT, at least 13 to force with a bid of two spades and much better hearts to rebid two hearts. South dealer Both sides vulnerable

One friend tells the publication, “Knowing that she’s going to have twins has turned Jessica’s life upside down. She and (her fiance) have had to scrap plans for a one-baby nursery and start all over again.” Although the couple know they’re set to become parents to twins, they have no Alba idea about the sex of their babies. The source adds, “They’re not sure whether they want to know the sex of the babies now or wait to be surprised.”

PETA criticizes queen’s soul
PETA thinks Aretha Franklin is no queen of soul when it comes to wearing fur. Franklin was crowned this year’s worst-dressed celebrity by the animal rights organization. Her crime: wearing “yet another vulgar fur” at the Grammy Awards. “... you looked as if you were going to perform ‘I Am the Walrus’ by the Beatles,” People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said Wednesday of Franklin’s appearance. “You might be a queen, but you don’t know jack about compassion.” The other offenders are Marilyn Manson, Eva Longoria (“in her trashy furs, she looks like the streetwalker of Wisteria Lane”), Lindsay Lohan, Kate Moss and Kylie Minogue. PETA called Minogue coldblooded for toting Franklin a python purse. As for Lohan, the group remarked: “‘I Know Who Killed Me’ isn’t just the title of Lindsay Lohan’s latest bomb, it’s the cry of the animals snuffed out so this ‘Mean Girl’ can pose in their pelts.” Christina Ricci, Martha Stewart and Alicia Keys have said they’ve given up wearing fur since being singled out by PETA in previous years. The group said it took Britney Spears out of the running because they didn’t want to kick her while she’s down.

Castro would be ‘ratings grabber’?
“Sicko” director Michael Moore jokes that Fidel Castro would be a “ratings grabber” at Sunday night’s Academy Awards show. Moore’s Oscar-nominated documentary on the health care industry concludes with a trip to Cuba, where he seeks care for a group of 9/11 responders who have experienced health problems. Castro, who is 81 and in poor health, announced his retirement as president of Cuba this week, ending a half-century of autocratic rule. “I got some great news today because I was trying to figure out how I was going to get Castro into the Oscars and for me he resigns today so he can come to L.A. and Moore go as my guest and perhaps give the acceptance speech,” Moore told AP Television on Tuesday night. “As long as he keeps it under five hours. I’m telling you, that’s got to be a ratings grabber. Can you imagine him? Showing up? If I could talk to (Oscar producer) Gil Cates and maybe get Castro in a dance number at the beginning of the show? Great.”

Stars hosts first-rate production of ‘La Cage’
Glitzy costumes, spirited cancan dancers, excellent singing and hilarious double entendres add up to a first-rate production of “La Cage aux Folles” at Stars Theatre Restaurant. It’s a funfilled show, the kind that brings a smile to your face again and again, long after you’ve left the theater. It’s a show that moves right CONTRIBUTING COLUMNIST along. At Camille Gavin last Friday’s [email protected] performance, one of the most surprising things to me was the swiftness of the numerous costume changes, which included the donning of elaborate wigs, designed by Larry Rector. The speedy scene changes are a credit to the cast as well as director Jon Johannsen. The plot revolves around a drag show in a French Riviera nightclub and is based on Jean Poirot’s play, “The Birdcage.” On the surface it seems to be a farce dealing with the conflict that develops when the straight son of one of the gay actors is faced with introducing his unconventional parents to the traditional parents of his brideto-be. But the underlying message is one of tolerance: Everyone needs to be accepted for what he is. Jason McClain is superb as ZaZa, the transvestite star of the show, and Bruce Saathoff is a perfect foil for McClain’s overthe-top antics. Maceo Davis, who plays ZaZa’s maid, is a show all by himself —with his feather duster and exaggerated facial expressions he manages to steal every scene he’s in. The well-rounded cast includes Forrest Madewell, who also served as vocal director, Jennifer Piccolotti, Mark Price, Leslie Lane and Robyn Dahlson. “La Cagelles,” the show’s energetic chorus line, is made up of Adam Rateliff, Marnie Forzetting, Alex Neal, Helen Prine, Robby George and Sam Hall.
