DANIEL’S DUCK 

Jeff and Daniel were brothers. They lived in a cabin on a mountain in Tennessee. Jeff had a good knife, and he could carve things out of wood. Jeff carved a wooden dish. Later he carved a spoon to go with the dish. “Some day, Jeff said, “! want to carve an animal like "enry #ettigrew$s. "enry #ettigrew lived in the valley, and although Jeff and Daniel had never met him, they had seen his work. "e was a woodcarver. Some people said he was the best woodcarver in Tennessee because all of his animals looked real. "is birds looked as if they could fly, and his horses looked as if they could run. “%ven though animals are hard to carve, said Jeff, “! want to make one like "enry #ettigrew$ #ettigrew$ss sometime. “! want to carve an animal, too, said Daniel. “&ou$re not old enough, Jeff said. “&es, ! am, said Daniel. “! could carve an animal if ! had a good knife and some wood. “!t takes more than that, said Jeff. “'hat does it take( asked Daniel. “&ou really have to know how, said Jeff. “!t$s difficult to carve an animal. “! do know how, said Daniel. “Let$s see if you can carve an animal, said )ather, and he gave Daniel a knife like Jeff$s and a  block of wood. “'inter is a good time to sit by the fire and carve something for the spring fair, said Jeff. %very spring there was a fair in the valley. !t was a time for people to meet after the long winter, and show their crafts. Sometimes people sold the things they made and other times they traded with each other. )ather liked to make moccasins, so on winter nights he worked on the moccasins by the fire. *other started to make a +uilt. She cut out pieces of cloth and sewed them together. “This will be a warm +uilt for somebody$s bed, she said. “!$m going to carve a wooden bo for the fair, said Jeff, “and make little moon decorations on the top. Jeff looked at his brother. “&ou haven$t done anything yet with your block of wood. 'hat are you going to carve( “! have to think, said Daniel. Days and days went by, then finally Daniel began to carve. “'hat are you making( asked Jeff. “&ou$ll see, said Daniel. -ne night when Jeff looked at what Daniel was carving, he saw a neck and a head and a wing. “ow ! see it$s a bird, Jeff said. “!t$s a duck, said Daniel. “&ou$re not doing it right, said Jeff. “!ts head is on backward. “! want it that way, said Daniel, “because my duck is looking back. “That$s no way to do it, said Jeff. )ather said, “Let him do it his way. Spring came, and soon it would be time for the fair. *other had /ust finished her +uilt, and )ather had made three pairs of moccasins. Jeff$s bo with carved moons on the top was finished. “This really took a long time to make, Jeff said. “*y duck took a long time, too, said Daniel. “0re you sure you want to take that duck to the fair( asked Jeff. “&es, replied Daniel. 'hen the day of the spring fair finally arrived, )ather drove the wagon down the mountain and into the town. *any people had already arrived for the fair. )ather took the +uilt, the moccasins, Jeff$s bo, and Daniel$s duck to the big hall in the middle of the town where the show would be held. Daniel$s family walked down the street in town and saw the river and talked with friends. 'hen )ather said, “%verything must be set up now in the hall, they went to the show. "andmade crafts were spread out on tables throughout the hall. There were +uilts and different si1es of baskets. 0ll the handmade dolls were on one table, and another table was filled with knitted hats. “Did anyone notice where the wood carvings are( asked Daniel.

 

“-ver here, answered Jeff. They went to two tables in the center of the hall. -n the small table was a carved deer. !t was so beautiful that people were +uiet when they looked at it. %veryone knew it had  been carved by "enry "enry #ettigrew #ettigrew.. 0ll the rest of the wood carvings were on a big table. Jeff and Daniel saw the things they had carved among all the other wood carvings. “! see my bo, said Jeff. “! see my duck, said Daniel. 0 group of people were looking at the table, and most of them were laughing. duck2 “'hy is everyone laughing( asked Daniel. Jeff didn$t answer. Somebody said, “Look at the *ore people crowded to look, and then they were laughing too. -ne person said, “That duck is so funny2  ow Daniel understood. They were laughing at his duck. 0t first he wanted wanted to run and hi hide, de, but then he felt angry. "e went to the table, grabbed his duck, and ran out of the hall. Someone was running after Daniel, but Daniel ran faster, until he came to the river. Daniel wanted to throw the duck as far as he could. 3efore Daniel could throw it, a man grabbed his arm and asked, “'hat are you doing with that duck( “!$m going to throw it in the river2 said Daniel. “&ou can$t do that, said the man. “! can if ! want to, said Daniel. “!t$s my duck. “Did you make it( asked the man as he let go of Daniel$s arm. “&es, said Daniel. “'hy were you going to throw it away( “%verybody laughed at it, Daniel said. “Listen to me, said the man. “There are different ways of laughing. The people liked  people liked  your  your duck. They laughed because they liked it. “o2 !t$s ugly, said Daniel. “!t isn$t ugly. !t$s a good duck, and it made me feel happy. That$s why ! laughed. 3ut the man wasn$t laughing now. “&ou$re hot and tired, he said. “4ome and rest in the shade. They sat under a tree in the cool shade. “'ould you sell your duck( asked the man. “'ho would buy it( asked Daniel. “! might think of someone, he said. Just then a boy and a girl came walking up to them. “"ow are you, *r. #ettigrew( they both asked. “!$m fine, he answered, and when the boy and girl walked on, Daniel looked at the man again. “&ou$re "enry #ettigrew2 #ettigrew2 “&es, he said, “and !$m a woodcarver. “! know, said Daniel. Daniel looked down at his duck. !t wasn$t ugly. !t was a good duck. "enry #ettigrew had said so, and he was the best woodcarver there was in Tennessee. *r. #ettigrew was still looking at the duck. “'ill you sell your duck to me( *r. #ettigrew asked. “o, said Daniel, and he held his duck a little longer. “! will will give  give my  my duck to you. QUESTIONS
