'.(. doctorates are structured programs o! advanced stud# and supervised research. (tudents admitted to doctoral programs must complete all &uali!#ing graduate-level coursewor* and participate in doctoral seminars and collo&uia. +o coursewor* is credited toward the doctoral program unless it is doctoral-level and part o! the research seminar and collo&uia preparation !or advancement to candidac#. (tudents who complete these preliminar# re&uirements at a satis!actor# level $usuall# an , average grade is re&uired% must then pass written comprehensive examinations that cover their chosen research speciali-ation plus two or more ad.unct specialties, one o! which is o!ten in a related sub.ect area. (uccess!ul students who pass the examinations and receive the recommendation o! the doctoral !acult# are advanced to candidac# !or the doctorate. Some U.S. graduate students’ transcripts may show that undergraduate courses were completed in subjects such as languages, quantitative methods or a second subject, particularly if the student entered pre-doctoral studies from the bachelor’s degree level, is undertaking interdisciplinary studies, or is changing subjects. t is important to know, however, that U.S. accreditation rules do not allow such undergraduate credit to be counted toward graduate studies. !nly if undergraduate courses are taken for graduate credit " requiring additional work " and are certified as such by the graduate faculty will an award of credit be considered. The doctoral candidate selects a doctoral dissertation advisor and doctoral committee $usuall# 2-/ senior !acult#, !re&uentl# with at least one member !rom another sub.ect area or universit#%. The advisor and committee approve the dissertation research proposal and are available to advise on the progress o! the independent research program. )hen the candidate and the advisor .udge that the research is completed and the dissertation is !inished, the candidate is scheduled !or a public oral examination de!ending the dissertation. ,t the conclusion o! the oral de!ense, the dissertation committee votes on whether to award the doctorate and sign the dissertation, which is then published via universit# printing services and made available electronicall# !or the academic communit#. 0an# dissertations are later revised, edited, and published commerciall# as academic monographs.
