Ramadan the Month of Achievement: How to Make It More Effective

Mawlana Hedayatullah☼

Allah Ta’la’s wish is that every of his slave becomes noble and each may compete to exceed the other to attain the proximity of Allah Ta’la; every of His slave may engage himself in good deeds every moment and spend time on the remembrance of Allah Ta’la. The rulings of Shariah have been contrived in such a way that a slave may not be unaware for even a moment. Supplication has been taught to make a slave remember Allah Ta’la just after waking up in the morning. So that he/she can remember Him at the very beginning of the day. The five times prayers of a day have been affixed in such a way that even if one wishes he would not be able to be oblivion from the remembrance of Allah Ta’la. While waking up, getting out from house, meeting someone, having bath, before and after having meal, in a word – from getting up from bed to going to bed at every step supplications and zikr have been taught. This is in view to conserve the remembrance of Allah Ta’la in the heart of His servant and the relationship with Allah Ta’la persists. However, the servant is weak in all aspects. He can never develop mere by his wish. He breaks down several times. He loses against the evil vice. He gets entrapped in the pitfall of Satan. He falls victim to the malice of adverse environment. Thus, his moving forward disrupts and he lags behind – he falls much behind. Therefore Allah Ta’la has provided daily, weekly, monthly and yearly opportunities and occasions, so that his beloved servants can develop and the ones lagging can move forward. The opportunities are such that His servants can move forward again in little time with little efforts; he may reattach the broken relationship with Allah Ta’la. Among all such opportunities and occasions Ramadan is the best. So treating it as worthy one must completely pay attention to achieve the proximity of Allah Ta’la. To utilize this golden opportunity fruitfully we should take prior preparation. Preparing for Ramadan Generally we prepare for Ramadan by managing some tasty Iftar and appetizing food. It is nothing wrong in arranging better food; rather, as it is not possible to spend much time on earning during Ramadan and as most of the time has to be dedicated on Ibadah, so some prior arrangement of quality food is commendable. However, many people exceed limits on this occasion. They undergo so much hardship and spend so much money and time for this, it seems as if this is the perfect time for vast eating and drinking. Of course, we must abstain from such arrangements. As preparation for Ramadan, we must plan our necessary tasks either before or after Ramadan. Apart from Ibadah, only very important tasks must be accomplished during Ramadan. Allocate little time for secular matters and having food and make a routine for Ibadah in rest of the time. The first task of Ramadan

When the month of Rahma (blessing) and Baraka (bounty) Ramadan initiates, it is necessary to perform Tawba (repentance) purely. After Tawba routine-wise Ibadah should be started. Because, a person cleansed from sins is more loving than a sinner. Therefore, his Ibadah is also more loving to Allah Ta’la. Tawba can also be performed now (i.e. before Ramadan). It doesn’t mean that when Ramadan will come I’ll perform Tawba altogether. Because, Tawba is an all-time performing deed. Especially when a sin is committed it is mandatory to perform Tawba instantly. To refrain from sins An integral part of Tawba is to promise not to perform sins again. Therefore, just after Tawba this promise needs to be established and refrain from all sins. Because, as the benefits of this month are more than usual, the outcome of sin is also dangerous. So if one wants to attain the benefits he must refrain from sins. Otherwise, it will be life collecting water in a leaked container. For instance, in such a container even if the ocean full of water is poured none will stand; similarly not a drop of benefit of the sinner will remain. Some sins are there, which need must be especially be refrained from. Backbiting (Geebat) Just as vast the sin of backbiting is – the same is it widespread today in our society. Most of the people are engaged in devastating epidemic of this sin quite incautiously. Whereas, according Hadith, backbiting is even worse than fornication (Zina). While this sin (backbiting) is worse than fornication in the rest of the year, at this time of Barakah of Ramadan – how hazardous it is that can easily be anticipated. One Hadith it informs –“Backbiting burns up the Fast”. Evil gaze This is also among the greater sins. If Islamic Society had prevailed, scope of this sin could enter little, rather could get no scope. However, much pity that this sin has not only stopped till uncovering. If it had stopped only till uncovering i.e. leaving veils, at least some limits would have been there. The way nudity and shamelessness is spreading, where is the society heading towards – this question leads us to a shivering fright. Due to its uninterrupted occurrence, the sin of evil gaze has also taken the shape of epidemic. In Ramadan we should especially be cautious from evil gaze. In this occasion, women have to play the major role. If they can enter into veil then the men can also save themselves and many people become safe from the curse of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaiyhiwasallam. Falsehood and Vulgarly acts According to Hadith, one who couldn't forgo falsehood, he needs not refrain from eating (i.e. needs not fast) for Allah Ta'la. Sunane-Abu Dawood 2/307, Hadith No. 2362 In another Hadith it is said, whenever someone among you fast he should abstain from vulgarly acts deeds, and he shouldn't act foolishly. If someone acts against him, he (the one fasting) should tell him – I'm fasting, I'm fasting. Sunane-Abu Dawood 2/307, Hadith No. 2363 To sum up, though there is much benefit in Ramadan and its deeds, if sin is committed there is no impact of the benefits in our life. Therefore, during Ramadan we need to be very careful so that we not become the victim of Jibraeel AM's supplication. For instance, he prayed – May he be ruined, the one who got Ramadan, but he couldn't make his sins forgiven; and on this prayer Rasulullah

Sallallahu Alaiyhiwasallam himself said, Ameen (O Allah! Accept it). May we also be not among such people who fast, however according to Hadith, there are many ones who fast, who fetch nothing in lot - except the hardship of staying hungry and there are many ones performing Salat, however, except fetch nothing in lot – except staying awake at night. May Allah Ta'la save us.

To Fast The most important and significant characteristic of this month is to fast. Many benefits of fast have been mentioned in Hadith. In Hadith it has been mentioned, 'Every deed of man is multiplied from ten to seven hundred times.' Allah Ta'la says, however the matter of fast in terms of benefit is separate. Fasting is for me (for my sake); I, myself would give reward of it.' Apart from this, to promise of enormous reward the for the ones who fast, to advocacy of Ramadan for them on the day of resurrection, only giving opportunities to the ones who fast to enter Jannah through a special gate named Raiyaan, to accept their supplications, to forgive all the sins of them and many more glad tidings for fasting have been mentioned in Hadith. Therefore, there is no alternative deeds to fast in this month. Tarabih Prayers A very important deed at the nights of this month is Tarabih Prayers. There are lots of benefit and glad tidings of it and it is one of the major means to attain the bounties of Ramadan. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaiyhiwasallam informs, Allah Ta'la has made fast mandatory on you and I (by the order of Allah Ta'la) have initiated Standing on prayers at Ramadan (the Tarabih). Therefore, one who will fast and say prayers at night (Tarabhi) with complete belief and in view to attain benefits, he would be cleansed from all sins just as an infant is born. Apart from this, many other benefits have been mentioned in Hadith regarding Tarabih. Therefore, to achieve the proximity of Allah Ta'la, this deed must be accomplished with due care.

Tilawat
In this month, recitation of Holy Qur'an must be increased many and many more times; not only recitation, with individual capabilities, it is also necessary to make efforts to understand Qur'an. Because, the relationship of Qur'an with this month is much deeper than other months. Qur'an had been revealed in this month and Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaiyhiwasallam also recited Qur'an to a much greater extent in this period. In Hadith it has been mentioned that every night Hazrat Jibrail AM used to come and Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaiyhiwassallam used to recite Qur'an to him. In the biographies of the Salfe-Saleheen (the noble predecessors) it is also mentioned that they used to complete (recitation) the Qur'an several times in this month. Give away alms (Sadaqah) Special attention must also be given to give alms in this month and more alms should be given at this period than other times around the year. It has been said in the Hadith, ‘Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaiyhiwa Sallam is the most generous person in this world. And in Ramadan this generosity would increase to a larger extent’. Giving away alms, especially in Ramadan, is extensively a disregarded matter in our country. Thus, all classes of donors and recipients in our society must be cautious about this issue. Some points can be mentioned regarding this matter:

i.

It can be seen that many affluent don’t even give away the compulsory Zakat/alms, let out voluntary (naf’l) donations. We must remember more and more about that day when this wealth will become snake and would hang around our neck. What would their decision regarding wealth at that time(?). Decision must be taken now. This Ramadan must be treated as opportunity and along with previous Zakat, this years Zakat must be paid right now after repenting purely. In addition, in view to compensate, voluntary (naf’l) donations must also be rendered. It must be remembered that the Owner of this wealth, who has given it to me, may anytime take away all these and give it to another. Many people’s way of donating leads to such confusion whether he is actually donating or simply circulating the information of his donations (i.e. showing off). These issues can deprive us from the bounty of Ramadan. Many rich people gather the poor in their houses for the whole day and finally see them off by giving a 60/70 taka lungi or saree. On one hand they have to wait for the whole day and on the other they have to jostle in crowd and an exhaustive situation arises because of the reprimand of the donors. However, they are poor. If he had not been physically disable or had the willingness to receive, he could earn a lot more. At the same time his personality would also be protected. Actually in case of donation, the donor’s responsibility is to reach it to the receiver. Because, Shariah (rulings of Islam) has not given any responsibility on anyone to receive donations, but responsibility of donating have been given to the affluent. The attitude of donors should be such that by receiving the alms, the receiver had rendered compassion on me. Therefore, I am grateful to him. On the other hand, those who expose themselves has benevolent by giving alms, it is good if the receivers can avoid taking their donations. Allah Ta’la would certainly provide their Rizk in a better way. Respectful Ulama, who never go to receive charity for themselves have to face the same behavior. Undoubtedly such behavior against them is extremely awful. Especially such acts are appalling at the period of Ramadan. Allah Ta’la forbid, instead of benefits such behavior would deprive us from all bounties of Ramadan.

Dua and Istegfar (Supplication and compunction) Supplication is a great weapon for the believer. Through it he can accomplish all by the support of Allah Ta’la. If at times, it seems that supplications are not being accepted outwardly, we must not become impatient. Supplications should always be carried on. Because, a believer’s supplication never declines. If no outward result is achieved, certainly it is considered as worship (Ibadah). Therefore, to achieve the bounties of Ramadan plenty of supplication is to be carried on. Especially at the times of acceptance, i.e. iftar-tahajjud, supplication must be given due importance. Along with supplication, compunction (istegfar) must be performed in abundance. As there is threatening of being ruined if sins cannot be forgiven, so with humbleness and weeping – we must achieve the mercy of Allah Ta’la.

Itekaf The last ten days’ amal of Ramadan is Itekaf. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaiyhiwa Sallam used to perform Itekaf for ten days in every Ramadan. He performed it for twenty days in the year before his departure. If a person in Itekaf and doesn’t perform any good deeds, even is in sleep, still he is in worship. It means that only residing in the mosque is his worship. If in addition, he is engaged in worship that is a great achievement. Another benefit of Itekaf is Shab-e-Qadr can certainly be attained. Therefore to achieve the bounties of Ramadan, Itekaf is of much significance. It must be paid due importance. If someone doesn’t have the opportunity to sit for Sunnat-e-Muwaqqadah Itekaf for ten days, he may sit for fewer periods. Just like men can do Itekaf in the mosque, women can also perform Itekaf in one corner of the house in solitude.

In search of Shab-e-Qadr The holiest month of a year is Ramadan; the holiest night of Ramadan is Shab-e-Barat. The Holy Qur'an clearly states: 'The night of Qadr is thousand times dignified than a month.' As if it is a great moment in a believer's fortunate life. It is like a slave is provided with the pen of own fate in his hands; write with it what you wish – Jannah or Jahannam(?). The Holy Qur'an has also been revealed at this night. In this worldly life if one abandons all activities and only response to nature calls – then engages himself in worship, is it possible for him to keep on worshiping for a thousand months? So, if someone neglects such an easy opportunity, what other thing can be expected from him? May Allah Ta'la protect me and us all from such negligence. Try to realize this matter a bit more. Suppose that worldwide a common announcement is made that, if someone works for a particular night, he will be rewarded equivalent to thousand month's salary for the period. Will there be any fool found sleeping at that night? Rather no doubt, relatives of handicaps and disables would try to attain some by engaging them at work partially. So after knowing the benefits of Shab-e-Qadr think by yourselves what we should do and we're about to. It must be known Which is the night of Qadr has not been fixed by Allah Ta'la for various reasons that certainly bear His Wisdom. One reason is, in search of this night all slaves of Allah Ta'la would perform some worship at every possible night. This would accumulate a lot of good deeds in the Book of Record . This night is none, but amongst the nights of Ramadan – this is evident by the Holy Qur'an and Hadith. For the weak ones, who don't have the ability to look for the night, Hadith urges them to search Shab-e-Qadr in the last ten days of Ramadan. Another Hadith says, if not possible in the last ten days, search in the last seven. In another Hadith it is said, search Shab-e-Qadr in the odd nights of last ten days. And in another Hadith, 27th night has also been emphasized. To be mentioned, to search Shab-e-Qadr in these means to spend these all possible nights in worship, so that whichever may be the Shab-e-Qadr we may not miss worship in it. Then only by one night's worship I am gaining more than a thousand month's benefit. We all know for achieving a thousand month's benefit, why only thirty nights, if alike Ramadan more months have to be awaken, are quite less. Treat Iftar to one who is fasting

To treat with iftar someone is such a deed which is a great opportunity that can be attained very easily. This is quite astonishing that the benefit which a believer achieves by spending all the day in hunger, another only treating that person at Iftar with just a glass of water gets the equal benefit. A Hadith mentions that the benefits of fast which the person being treated will get will not reduce though the one treating him would get it equally. I have heard that in Arab competent people stand along the streets with Iftar to treat the ones fasting. Therefore, the passers-by don't have to be in search for Iftar. Iftar itself searches them. In this case, what is the scenario in our country, is known to all. May Allah Ta'la give us the ablity to follow the good things of the noble. Voluntary(Naf'l) Worship Final words are, whether or not this golden opportunity will ever again in life is not known. So, to make to this period more and more effective all out efforts must be given. Besides accomplishing all compulsory deeds and refraining from all sins, voluntary deeds should be paid special attention. Various Zikr and voluntary prayers must be attained (through practice) at this month. For instance, the Tasbih to perform in the mornings and evenings, Tahajjud, Chasht, Ishrak, Awabeen etc. Hadith has mentioned, the devil – shaiytan is tied up under arrest in this month. Another Hadith says, a voluntary deed is equals to a compulsory (Fard) deed in this month. And in Ramadan, a compulsory deed is equals to seventy times of a compulsory deed performed rest of the year. Therefore, at no other times it is possible to develop and advance such rapidly as it is in this month.
