W A T C H TE D X TA L K S R E C O R D E D A T TH E U N IV E RS I TY O F D E N V E R www.du.edu/tedxdu/ About TEDxDU On May 13, 2010, TEDxDU gathered experts and inventors, scientists and philosophers, activists and entrepreneurs on the University of Denver campus to share their personal stories and the passion that drives their action. TEDxDU was a celebration of DUing, with passion, laughter, emotion, ingenuity and ideas powerful enough to improve our lives and our world. True to the format of the TED conference, TEDxDU was a fast-paced afternoon of eclectic content — thought provoking talks, musical performances, and short films — designed to reconnect us to the power of ideas and optimism. A few highlights: Barry Hughes: Analyzing and Forecasting for Worldwide Solutions www.youtube.com/watch?v=at47WLuA8Ks What if the literacy rate in the developing world were increased? What if rising sea levels were to displace a billion people? Barry Hughes takes on global poverty to demonstrate his International Futures model, a scenario planning tool available free to all. Hughes, a professor in the University of Denver's Josef Korbel School for International Studies, created International Futures (IFs)—one of the most sophisticated global modeling systems ever developed. IFs integrates sociopolitical and economic factors, population, agriculture, energy, technology and environmental issues to forecast how different policy decisions might play out. Richard Lapchick: How Sport Changes Society www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHIOny_C2Jk Often described as "the social conscience of sport," Richard Lapchick knows the power of athletics to bring people of different backgrounds together. After earning an MA and a PhD in international studies from the University of Denver, he went on to lead a 20-year boycott of sports in South Africa to protest apartheid.
