People who have very greasy hair also find that should they use a dry shampoo on the days that they do not "wet-shampoo", their hair looks more acceptable. Some people find that should they use a scalp toner (scalp stimulator) regularly, that the sebum flow normalizes to some extent, cutting down on the frequency that hair needs to be washed.  washed.  Click here  here to have a look at some recipes for home-made  scalp stimulating toner .  home-made

When finished, remove the "modified" talc from the blender and place in a suitable container that closes tightly.

When you need to apply the dry shampoo, brush about 1 to 2 teaspoons (depending on hair length) onto and through your hair with a good quality brush. This should be done over the bath, or a place that is easy to wash the talc away being brushed from your hair.

Exfoliate your skin with a home made natural facial scrub When you look in the mirror and you are faced with a dull and dry flaky skin, it may be time to look at doing some exfoliation to get rid of dead cells clogging up the top layer of skin to bring the hidden more youthful looking skin to the top.

Younger people with skin problems should take care not to over-exfoliate, as we have found that those suffering from skin problems think that daily exfoliating or scrubbing every three or four days, will help to rid their skin from impurities. That is unfortunately not true, and over-exfoliating or scrubbing can aggravate the problem instead or alleviating it, since the skin is irritated instead of being assisted along to help heal itself. So - people with a problem skin can exfoliate, but gently and not too often, and if in doubt, please consult your licensed medical practitioner and/or dermatologist. But for those amongst us that are fighting the aging battle (and for those not yet there) exfoliation of the skin, helps with blood circulation and the removal of the dead skin cells that can cause it to look dull and dry. Exfoliating can be done every 14 days, and in some cases weekly.

Although there are various commercial scrubs on the market, we have found that the following home made scrub is most invigorating to the skin, leaving it rosy and keenly healthy.

Natural exfoliating scrub with essential oil Take 2 - 3 teaspoons (not the type) crush intoand smaller bits either by hand orraw in oats a grinder. Mixpre-cooked the dry oats withand pure honey 1/4 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar until it i t forms a smooth mixture. Add more honey as needed. Then add 1 drop of basil oil to the mixture. For a problem skin, you can replace the basil oil with tea tree oil to help the healing process along. After washing the face and drying it gently by patting with a towel, apply this sticky mixture in gentle circular movements. Avoid the eye area. Leave the mixture on for about 15 minutes and wash off with lots of tepid water. Although it is a messy skin treatment to perform, the results are excellent and it costs only pennies to make.

Although clay masks are thought to be drying, they contain great benefits for the skin, and can be used very successfully in your beauty routine. Green clay has become the talk of the beauty world, but if it is not available in your area, you can still use the old dependable white kaolin powder. As a base you can mix either green clay or kaolin powder (reconstituted with either  floral water  such as rosewater or pure distilled water) together with a little cornflower and a quarter teaspoon of powdere powdered d raw oats. Before applying the mask, make sure that the skin is cleansed properly and dried by patting it with a towel. After applying any of the masks, leave on for at least 15 minutes while relaxing, and wash off with tepid (lukewarm) water and pat the skin dry. Apply moisturizer.

Home made facial toners and astringents (also known as tonics) Toners were traditionally necessary to use, to remove the oily residue of facial cleansers and contained alcohol to facilitate the removal of oily residue, yet were drying due to the alcohol. With modern chemistry, cleansers are very seldom oily or greasy, yet toners do have the effect of toning and refining the

skin and need not contain alcohol, since there are no huge amounts of oily residue to remove.

Inclusion of certain ingredients, such as witch-hazel, into a toner mixture adds an astringent quality to it should it be required. Please keep in mind that some individuals find that witch-hazel is too drying for their skin. In that case, rather just use the toner with the rosewater. Simple home made toners can easily be created and the skin can be wiped with a wetted cotton ball after cleansing.

Method of making home made facial toners The toners are all made the same way. Place the rosewater base into a clean glass bottle and add the essential oil of choice. Close the bottle and shake the mixture vigorously to help disperse the oil. A dispersing agent is normally added in commercial mixtures, but since this is freshly home made we will exclude it.

Leave the mixture for at least 36 hours before shaking it again vigorously and then filtering it through a paper coffee filter to remove the larger amount of essential oil. Re-bottle the filtered toner and remember to shake it before use to ensure proper distribution of the mixture.

Toner for dry to normal skin 100 ml  ml rosewater , 1 drop  drop camomile oil, oil, 1 drop  drop geranium oil. oil.  Combine, mix and filter all the ingredients as  as  described above. above.

Astringent 25 ml witch-hazel, 75 ml  ml  rosewater , 1 drop  drop cypress cypress,, 2 drops  drops sandalwood sandalwood..  Combine, mix and filter all the ingredients as  as  described above. above.

Home made creams and skincare products

A variety of creams can be made at home, ranging from cosmetics, face packs and skin care to soothing balms and salves to help you achieve a naturally healthy and younger looking face and skin.

Many people expect any cream or lotion to show overnight effects, but you need to be patient and let your skin regenerate in order to see the difference and the older you get the longer the cycle of regeneration is. On average you should see results between 28 and 37 days. Essential oils have various  various therapeutic properties  properties which add zing to any cream, and some of them have very specialized properties to help with skin conditions. If you have never used essential oils, and are prone to allergic reactions, please do a skin patch test  test with any new ingredient you use.

Some oils to consider for facial creams would include:

           

Camomile German  German  Carrot   Carrot Clary sage  sage  Fennel   Fennel Frankincense   Frankincense Geranium   Geranium Hyssop   Hyssop Lavender   Myrrh   Myrrh Neroli   Neroli Palma rosa  rosa

The list above includes oils that have great properties that can be of use to help fight wrinkles and the traces of ageing. When selecting essential oils for facial or body creams and lotions, stay away from  sun sensitizing  from sensitizing essential oils, as they will cause a problem if you go into the sun.

Aqueous base cream If you do not want to get involved with too much mixing, you can make a simple moisturizer by using a neutral aqueous base cream, obtainable from your pharmacy, druggist or health shop, and add your desired essential oils to it. Do not exceed the recommended dilution of essential oil to the base, since more is not always better, and you could burn your skin with too strong a mixture. For the proper  dilution rates for cream, cream, please  please  click here. here.

Beeswax and oil cream Below is the recipe for a richer cream than just an aqueous base cream, but please note that it should be kept cool and for no longer l onger than six weeks.   Melt 15 g of pure beeswax together with 130 ml  ml sweet almond oil, oil,  in a bain-

marie.   Do not melt the beeswax in a pot on direct heat from a plate on the

o

stove (electric or gas) since it can burn easily and cause a fire hazard. Another fixed oil  oil  can be used instead of the almond oil, although o  sweet almond oil does do wonders for the skin. Some people are hesitant to use beeswax in skin products, since o  they think that it will "block the pores" but when used in a mixture like this, not only does it do wonders for softening the skin, but will not cause any problems. If you are allergic to bee products, care should be taken when using o  it. ml  rosewater , or any other  floral   While the beeswax is melting, gently warm 50 ml  water , using the same method as above.   Next start to mix the floral water to the beeswax and oil mixture, mixing it with a whisk or electric mixer. This should be done slowly and as soon as a quarter of the water has been added, remove the pot from the bain-marie, and complete the water addition.

When you have finished adding the water the mixture will start to set, and before it does mix in 8 drops of your chosen essential oil.

General information To have a look at our page on creams and lotions, please  click here  here and for recipes on hair care products, please  please click here. here.  Although we are a site selling essential oils, it must m ust be kept in mind that the use of synthetic material would be acceptable in certain cases, since some pure floral  absolutes floral absolutes,,  like rose and jasmine cost thousands of dollars per ounce. You

can also make up mock fragrances - carnation to be made with equal amounts of black pepper and ylang-ylang with a tad of geranium. The ideas below are a simple guide for you to get started, but it must be kept in mind that it is easier to add more essential oils to a blend to make the fragrance stronger, than it is to dilute the blend in order to tone the fragrance down. For this reason it is better to rather add too little of an oil, and to top up later if you are looking for a stronger fragrance. One cardinal rule you should always follow, is to write down the recipe, as you are mixing it, as it often happens that a person would prepare a wonderful fragrance, only to find that they cannot remember the quantities or the oils used in the mixture. When mixing your fragrance you should use glass containers, as some plastic containers and instruments do tend to retain fragrance particles. For mixing the blend never use a metal object, but rather use a glass rod. After you have used your mixing equipment, wash very well with a strong soapy solution, dry, wipe down with alcohol to remove all fragrance traces, wash again, rinse in clean water and dry for next use. For storing your mixed fragrances buy blue or amber glass bottles, and if they have cork stoppers you would need to seal the cork stopper with paraffin wax to prevent oxidation, and if they are equipped with screw tops make sure that the tops have liners. Essential oils are either added to alcohol or an oil base when making perfumes at home. The alcohol to use is ethanol, but for the sake of ease vodka can be used. It is best to buy a high quality 100% proof vodka since it has virtually no smell. The oil base that can be used is  is  jojoba  jojoba oil  oil - which is really a liquid wax. Jojoba has excellent keeping properties properties and does not have a very heavy odor of its own. The percentage of essential oil used in perfumes is high, and to prevent any allergic reaction, remember to do a  a skin patch test  test if you have never used a particular oil, and also look at our page on essential oil safety by  by  clicking here. here.  When blending your perfume or eau de toilette or cologne start with the base (alcohol/vodka or oil base depending on what you are a re making) and add the oils drop by drop. The classification of perfume, eau de toilette and eau de cologne is based on the strength of the fragrance it contains and the percentages of essences used.

For a perfume you will use around 15% essential oil, whilst for a lighter eau de toilette you will use about 4 - 8% essential oil and a yet lighter eau de cologne 1 5%. If you want to work out your percentages, you can work on the premise that 1 ml is 20 drops. To work out your percentages convert the total of the oil used as well as the base - be that the alcohol/vodka or jojoba oil - to drops. If your total drops are, let's say 58 drops, and your base 240 ml (240 x 20 = 4,800 drops) divide the amount of drops by the amount of drops in the base. Using the above example you will get a result of 0.012 = 1.2% concentrate of oil in the mixture. Some of the recipes state that you should mix the blend, bottle, cap and leave for x amount of days. This is to give the fragrance time to settle and to achieve a more rounded fragrance.

Certain essential oils can cause liver toxicity (hepatoxicity) The liver is involved in a wide variety of actions and helps with carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, secretion of bile as well as the synthesis of proteins, yet most people perceive the liver as only a detoxification organ for the blood.

Certain essential oils may cause liver toxicity, but this is unlikely to be due to skin absorption, as in massage .
