The internationalization of business has increased the demand for new skills. The modern international manager must be able to navigate efficiently and effectively in various business environments and be able to work with new issues that arise directly from doing international business. The General Management course provides participants with a well-balanced generalist introduction to the key subject areas of business and management. Apart from a good balance between hard and soft business skills acquired during the course, interpersonal skills such as leadership and effective communication and presentation as well as self-management, emotional intelligence and teamwork are emphasized. The specialization in International Management provides participants with a sound foundation in international management. Students adapt their previous business know-how to an international context and are introduced to issues and problems that international companies face today. The finalization module enables participants to immerse themselves in cross-cultural issues and world affairs. The Applied Cross-Cultural Modules intend to show how socio-cultural norms and ideologies are entrenched in business culture, and as a result exert influence on the way business is conducted. Students become familiar with different cultures and acknowledge their importance for building fruitful personal exchanges and to promote successful business cooperation. The Applied World Affairs Modules intend to review and reflect on the major phases of negotiation processes. Participants will appraise key dimensions of negotiation dynamics, including impact of power, information, and culture. The module concludes with the Master Thesis, which is a supervised, problem-oriented or theoretical project. BSc in Business Engineering Sustainable Energy Systems
Title of Study programme: Bachelor of Science in Business Engineering Sustainable Energy Systems Course description: Sustainability is central to the future plans of governments, companies and civil authorities alike. This is especially true when it comes to energy, the driver of growth for the past hundred years. When looking to cover our energy needs we are increasingly faced with the challenge of addressing social solidarity, environmental responsibility, and economic capacity; on both a local and global level. Faced with these challenges for survival, mankind is standing at a crossroads. Governments, industry, and consultancies all need individuals, who are able to balance energy use and all three aspects of sustainability. According to a recent study, 34% of all companies in Switzerland are related to or substantially impacted by energy aspects. It is not only a question of being able to judge the best technology to reduce waste or to be most efficient, it is crucial to optimize the operation of any system with pragmatism based on the criteria of sustainability. Studying Business Engineering with specialisation in Sustainable Energy Systems at the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture – all in English – together with other students from various countries places you in the league of sought-after individuals. If you are a highly motivated student with a broad education, who is eager to understand the mind-set of both Business and Engineering and above all to apply them in the context of environmental and social concern, then in Lucerne you are at the right place. Students are provided with the expertise of various disciplines of the other departments of the School i.e. business, environment, renewable energy, intelligent and efficient electrical systems, building technology, marketing and social work. Students are able to not only study the topics in English, but also gather international experience by joining a class with participants from around the world and to have the option to study up to one year abroad at one of our partner schools.

In terms of content, the course features a general management programme of approximately 120 credits and an exclusively international focus programme of approximately 60 credits. Students will sharpen their awareness and understanding of cultural diversity and learn how to act responsibly and successfully across cultures. In terms of management skills, the programme includes a thorough grounding in managerial economics, value chain management and project management. Beyond that it extends to areas such as international trade, finance, law and taxation. A wide range of teaching and learning methods are used, depending on the aims and objectives of specific modules and submodules. Ba in Design Management
Title of Study programme: Ba HSLU in Design Management Course description: The BA Design Management is a unique course, which enables students to apply their design and organisational skills to the management of design projects and the tactical design planning in design agencies and companies. It combines theory and practice from various disciplines like design, business and economy, engineering and communication in order to provide a profound understanding of the areas where design, technology and management meet. And it teaches the necessary skills to manage the interface between these fields and to facilitate their collective actions concerning design. It is develops the knowledge of pragmatic design practice, which enables students to manage design projects by using processes and methods based on clear argumentation and reasoning. It is completely taught in English and students from Switzerland, Europe and overseas are welcome: a multicultural classroom will therefore create a real 'live' learning situation, in a discipline that is increasingly becoming economically viable world-wide. What is design management? The goal of design management is to support companies in such a way that they can achieve their strategic goal - for instance to create a loyal and motivated customer-base, or providing a consistent brand experience - through the optimal employment of design. To achieve this, design management undertakes various tasks on all levels in business (from operational through tactical to strategic) and in all its activities (from research to sales and service). Design management plans, coordinates and steers all design activities, safeguarding that they all serve the strategic goal of a company, business or brand. Design management uses design methodologies in the fields of products, services, brands, corporate identities and communications and optimizes the interdependent processes, from market evaluation to market introduction. Design management is an elementary part of a company’s vision creation and caters for coherent and consistent customer experience at all touch-points. Why this course? Design management, as well as design driven innovation and design thinking, is actually still quite a new concept: many companies only recently have experienced that, in view of increasingly demanding consumers, tougher market conditions and shrinking resources, competitive advantage can be achieved through the strategic deployment of design, as opposed to applying it as decoration. Design has become a central part of a company’s strategy to solve these challenges and with that to remain relevant for customers and stakeholders. This has led to an increased demand towards design as a function: next to providing out-standings design-skills, design also has to understand and speak the business' language, so that it can act like a business function. In here design management comes into play - it enables the optimal interaction between design and corporations and enables design to become a (corporate) business function. That is why the bachelor course DMI (Design Management, International) puts the emphasis on the ability to think, plan and act in an interdisciplinary and people-oriented way: the students are educated to become generalists in the field of business administration, development and design, but they acquire a specialization: they understand how designers work and reason and share their empathy for human needs. That's why they can enable design as a strategic resource and tool, by which companies can achieve a coherent, consistent and relevant display of value to the market and their customers. This specialization forms the basis for their actions as a facilitator, driver or leader of design activities within companies, depending on the seniority level they operate. MAS FHNW in Graphic Design I and Graphic Design II
Title of study programme: MAS FHNW in Graphic Design I MAS FHNW in Graphic Design II Course description: The MAS Graphic Design I (Iconicity) and MAS Graphic Design II (Mediality) addresses students who want to be part of an international program influenced by the tradition of Swiss Graphic Design and the current academic perspective and standards of the Visual Communication Institute, The Basel School of Design. Of special interest for students is the opportunity to graduate with an internationally accredited Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Graphic Design (UIC) and the Swiss equivalent, MAS in Graphic Design I, Iconicism and Graphic Design II, Mediality. Students are matriculated and registered at UIC with classes being held at the FHNW/HGK Visual Communication Institute in Basel. Graphic Design, Visual Communication and Media Design, give visual form to messages that become a part of our everyday lives. Although these disciplines contribute to the much discussed “image flood” in today’s societies, we find implicit knowledge about the meaning of images, the process of creating them and their media references of extreme importance. It is on this central theme that the MFA and the MAS Graphic Design I, II is focused. Therefore, the goal of the program is the deepening of process-oriented design skills through project oriented design work with enhanced analytical competence in image theory and the media sciences. The International Master of Fine Arts UIC/HGK is a collaboration of the University of Illinois, Chicago (UIC) and the FHNW/HGK Visual Communication Institute. It focuses on Graphic designers, Visual Communication designers and Media designers, with a bachelor's degree or an equivalent degree with professional design experience. Ma FHNW in Visual Communication and Iconic Research
Title of study programme: MAS FHNW in Graphic Design I MAS FHNW in Graphic Design II Course description: Connecting Iconic Practice, Iconic Theory, and Iconic Research In the context of the digital flood of images, expanded qualifications are required. A design practice based purely on craftsmanship or technical skills no longer meets the demands of visual communication, nor does a reflection on visual messages entirely derived from iconic theory. Connecting design practice with iconic and media theory generates new qualifications in the conception and design of visual messages for the context of a current, digitalized iconic communication. For students with a fine art background, these qualifications consist of the expansion of practical design skills to include models from theory and research. Conversely, students with a university degree will augment their analytical skills with knowledge of design and the creative process. The combination of iconic practice, iconic theory, and iconic research forms the profile of the MA in Visual Communication and Iconic Research. The degree program is a collaboration of The University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, Academy of Art and Design (FHNW/HGK), Visual Communication Institute and "eikones," the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR), at the University of Basel. Ma ZFH in Composition/Theory
Title of Study programme: Ma ZFH in Composition/Theory, in cooperation with Berne University of the Arts (HKB)

Course objectives Composition/Theory is one of the three main areas of tertiary music education, comprising performance, teaching, and creation. The interactions between the various Master’s degrees in these areas are decisive for every modern conservatory. These dynamics promote competition amongst students and successfully enhance their skills: those composing music for others develop a better understanding of performance; those conversant with how works are composed today can better appraise their own performance and the historical repertoire; those learning to reflect on their own skills will be able to better convey content. Such skills development presupposes solid all-round musical training, which the BA courses existing at both universities provide. The MA Composition/Theory is run jointly with Berne University of the Arts (HKB). The various core subjects complement each other perfectly. Students also benefit from the MA course being based at the ZHdK, which by assembling all the arts, theatre, dance, film, media and design under roof is a powerhouse of arts education and cultural development, providing students with outstanding conditions. MA Composition/Theory students thus benefit from the singular opportunities afforded by two Swiss arts universities championing interdisciplinarity. Employment opportunities Composing is an exacting profession, requiring excellent practical skills, creative potential, and comprehensive knowledge of contemporary production. Composers must be able to produce music expediently for a broad range of events, needs, and audiences. Coursework allows students to deepen their own aesthetic stance and idiom, and leads them to future professional roles. Students must be able to tackle assignments with utmost precision and formulate answers with as much acumen. Composing contemporary music (in a narrow sense) and producing music for more ready use demand both skills. The course places great emphasis on practice-oriented interdisciplinary training. Course structure The MA Composition/Theory combines those courses focusing on composition and music theory. The notion of composition covers the traditional practise of writing music down on paper over setting pictures to music to computer-based sound synthesis to composing music for stage performance. Specialization Composition and Theory Composition and Media Technology Core subject Composition (HKB, ZHdK) Théâtre musical (HKB) Theory (ZHdK) Electroacoustical Composition (ZHdK) Sound Engineering (ZHdK) Composition for Film, Theatre, Media (ZHdK) Jazz Composition & Arrangement (HKB)

MAS ZFH in Curating
Title of Study programme: MAS ZFH in Curating Course description: The Postgraduate Program in Curating is conceived of as a discursive platform which imparts key areas of contemporary exhibition-making by way of praxis-oriented project work. With instruction modules, group activities, seminars and lectures held by an international selection of guest lecturers, various fields of knowledge are researched and projects are developed and carried to realization. The Program focuses less on the ‘genius concept’ of the exhibition planner as individual author – a highly controversial topic since the 1990s – than on cooperative, interdisciplinary working methods, as employed, for example, in film productions or non-government organizations. Exhibition-making / curating means the creation of innovative structures for the presentation of cultural artefacts through interdisciplinary collaboration. In this field, art, digital media, design, and architecture intermesh in new ways. The manner of working employed by curators, artists, architects, designers, museum educationalists and writers has become increasingly unified, bringing about new forms of mediation, lounges, archives, reading rooms and new virtual forums – and with them new means of access and forms of interpretation. At the same time, we are witnessing a shift in the organization of work processes throughout society. Individual areas of action are merging on new meta-levels, namely those of networks and know-how transfer. The Postgraduate Program in Curating responds to these changes in the processes of the production of cultural meaning. The course creates a model situation in which students can gain practical experience of curating and learn to think critically about the issues involved. The modular structure ensures the Program’s contemporary and innovative standards. The Postgraduate Program in Curating offers two study opportunities: The postgraduate certificate (CAS) is a one-year, parttime course providing participants with key qualifications in all areas of curatorial practice: research, conception, organization and communication as well as basic theoretical knowledge. The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) is a two-year, part-time study program culminating in an advanced qualification. It guides participants in an in-depth enquiry into the key areas of curatorial practice and relevant theory. Students have the opportunity to develop and situate their own curatorial projects and access cultural networks. The Program concludes with a major project and written dissertation. Duration / ECTS: CAS: 1 year / 23,5 ECTS MAS: 2 years / 65 ECTS Language: English Registration deadline: End of June Tuition fees: Total CHF 18’000.-(4’500.- per term) Address: Zürcher Hochschule der Künste Koordination Weiterbildung Limmatstr. 47 8005 Zürich Contact person: Esther Notz
