Nestled in the Nilgiri Hills, in the Palakkad District of Kerala, the Silent Valley National Park is one of the most virgin areas of the Nilgiri biosphere. The park houses a unique mixture of Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, encouraging in its valley area and a South Western Ghats Montane rain forest region in its hilly area above 1000 mts. Beyond 1500 mts, the evergreen forests are often seen to be replaced by short stunted forests and open grasslands. This unique vista also houses 16 endangered species of the avian population. Some of these include Nilgiri Wood-pigeon, Malabar Parakeet, Malabar Gray Hornbill, Whitebellied Treepie, gray-headed Bulbul, Broad-tailed Grassbird, Rufous Babbler, and the Wynaad Laughing Thrush. There are around 34 species of mammals which includes the endangered Lion-tailed Macaque,, Niligiri Langur,  Macaque Langur,  Malabar Giant Squirrel, Squirrel,  Nilgiri Tahr,  Tahr,  Peshwa’s Bat (Myotis Bat (Myotis peshwa) and Hairy-winged Bat. In addition, mammals like tiger, leopard, (panther), mouse deer, elephant, gaur, wild boar, sambar, spotted deer, barking deer, leopard cat,  jungle cat, fishing cat, Common Palm Civet, Small Indian Civet, Brown Palm Civet, Ruddy Mongoose, Stripe-necked Mongoose, Mongoose, Dhole, clawless otter, sloth bear, small Travancore flying squirrel, Indian Pangolin (scaly anteater) is also found here. Periyar Tiger Reserve

Stretched across a huge area of 925 sq km, the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady is a rich repository of endangered flora and fauna of Kerala. It houses a rich biodiversity comprising birds, butterflies, insects, mammals as well as marine life. Some of the avian population found chirping in the Periyar Tiger reserve include the Asian Openbill, the Black Baza, the Black Bittern, the Black Stork, the Black-crowned Night Heron and the Black-shouldered Black-sho uldered Kite among others.

 

 

The lush stretches of the Periyar forest also play host to several sev eral unique butterfly species. Some of these include the Blue Mormon, the Common or Oriental Lemon Emigrant, the Malabar Banded Swallowtail. The mammal population of Periyar includes Elephant, tiger, leopard, Common Palm Civet, Malabar Giant Squirrel, and Sambar. The Periyar Lake is also home to several freshwater fish specimens like the filament barb, the snake head Murrel and the Travancore Loach. Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in the southeastern tip of the Kannur district, the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the only range of the Aralam wildlife division which is part of the Northern Wildlife Circle. The 23 species of mammals found in the area include tiger and leopard who are the main predators. The other mammals include the Malabar giant squirrel, the flying squirrel, Bonnet macaque, the Indian wild boar, the lion tailed macaque, the Indian porcupine, Hanuman langur, the Indian Pangolin, Nilgiri langur, Common palm civet, Slender Loris. The place also houses around 22 species of reptiles and some rare and endangered species of birds like Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Great Pied Hornbill, Ceylon Frogmouth, and Broad billed Roller. The area supports a rich of orchids, aroids, mosses, ferns and lichens. Evidence of Kerala’s rich diversity of flora and fauna is also found in some of its other national parks and sanctuaries like the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary.
