We Had 41 members attend our January meeting. I hope that means that we
are getting speakers for our meetings that you want to hear from. Please
contact myself or any board member if you have a particular topic that you
would like to see addressed.
Our speaker was Mike Juhnke with Lochnivar speaking on efficiency
standards that all manufacturers must test by and adhere to and what changes
are coming to the minimum efficiencies. Mike was in the Air Force for 8 years;
he has an engineering degree and has been in the industry since 1993 and
with Lochinvar for the last 10 years.
Efficiency Terms – There are (4) efficiency ratings: Thermal, Combustion,
Annual Utilization (AFUE) and Energy Factor (EF). Test procedures have been
established in the federal register by the Department of Energy (DOE) to
evaluate and document these efficiencies.
Thermal Efficiency: a measurement of efficiency that determines the exact
amount of heat transferred to the water during the operation of a water heater
or boiler. Thermal efficiency is expressed as the percentage of available heat
from the gas that is transferred to the water. A thermal efficiency test is very
difficult to perform in the field.
Combustion Efficiency (Flue Loss Efficiency): A measurement of efficiency
based on the percentage of heat loss up the flue while the unit is operating at
a steady state condition. The net temperature (Flue temperature minus room
temperature) and carbon dioxide content of the flue products are measured
and used to calculate the percentage of available heat lost up the flue. A
combustion efficiency test can be performed in the field.
Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE): This is an efficiency number
derived from a D.O.E. test procedure for residential heating boilers with inputs
of 300,000 BTU/HR or less. AFUE is utilized to simulate the many effects of
part load operation over a complete heating season of operation. AFUE
assumes the boiler is installed in a heated space and therefore heat losses
from the jacket are considered useful heat. The AFUE rating is for residential
boilers only (inputs of 300,000 BTU/HR or less) and not for commercial
products. An AFUE test cannot be performed in the field.

It is not too early to start organizing your golf 4-somes. The annual
ASPE Golf Tournament is being held in June. We will have more on
the Golf Tournament next month.

Continue to talk to your co-workers about the benefits of joining
their local ASPE Chapter. We are still offering our “FREE LUNCH”
program. Talk to me if you need Membership applications or
pamphlet on the advantages of ASPE.

The next meeting is February 1, 2011.

Energy Factor (EF): Energy factor is a measurement of efficiency that is utilized to
simulate a 24 hour use period. The test data for calculating EF uses measured
performance data, as input. A series of 6 hourly 10-gallon hot water draws is
conducted followed by a stand-by period of 19 hours. Energy utilized over this period
is accumulated to determine an energy factor. Energy factors apply to gas and
electric storage water heaters with input ratings of 75,000 BTU/HR (12 KWH) or
less with storage capacities from 20 to 120 gallons, and to gas tank less water
heaters with input ratings greater than 50,000 BTU/HR but less than 200,000
BTU/HR. An EF test cannot be performed in the field.

Efficiency Test Parameters: Commercial Boilers – AHRI (BTS-2000); Residential
Boilers – ASHRAE 103, Commercial Water Heaters – ANSI 221.10.3 and Energy
factor – D.O.E. 10 CFR part 430, support B.
Commercial Water Heater Efficiency: Commercial gas water heaters require an
80% thermal efficiency, which is the current minimum level with stand-by loss for
units with storage. There are no proposed changes that exist at this time.
Commercial Boiler Efficiency: The current federal minimum requirement is 80%
Combustion Efficiency, which is the current minimum level with stand-by loss for
units with storage. There are no proposed changes that exist at this time.
Commercial Boiler Efficiency: The current federal minimum requirement is 80%
Combustion Efficiency. Thermal Efficiency is required by ASHRAE 90.1 with a
minimum level of 80%. D.O.E. has adopted a change to move from combustion to
Thermal Efficiency in 2012 for products less than 2.5 million BTU/HR with the levels
indicated in ASHRAE 90.1-2007. Products over 2.5 Million BTU/HR will remain 82%
Combustion Efficiency as in ASHRAE 90.1-2007.

Commercial Boiler Efficiency Standards: How does everything
tie together? D.O.E. sets forth the minimum criteria and test
procedures for product energy efficiency; AHRI performs third party
verification testing according to the test procedures set forth by
D.O.E., ASHRAE 90.1-2007 is the energy standard for buildings
and utilized the same performance test procedures as those
identified in the federal register and LEED uses ASHRAE 90.1 as
the criteria for design of energy efficient buildings.
Efficiency Certification Programs: GAMA (Gas Appliance
Manufacturers Association) is now AHRI (Air-Conditioning, Heating
and Refrigeration Institute). Why do we need them? They
validate/comparable efficiencies check efficiencies on an ongoing
basis with pass/fail criteria, they have criteria for challenging
competitor’s efficiencies and have a public data base
(HTTP://WWW.AHRIDIRECTORY.ORG). AHRI’S efficiency
certification programs include; Residential/Commercial Boilers,
Residential/Commercial water heaters and indirect fired water
heaters.
In February we will have Joe Scott from Cannon Design speaking
on the musings of a Plumbing Engineer, in March we will have
Mike Doychak of PVI, in April we will have someone from Grundfos
and in May we will have Elbert McKinlay from Watts Company
speaking on automatic Control Valves and Pressure Reducing
Valves.

Our next meeting is Tuesday February 1, please remember to send
in your reservations to mike Todd and please invite a potential
member to attend with you.
