Freedom to Marry Poll
Columbus – Ian James, FreedomOhio cofounder, issued the following statement after the Columbus Dispatch published results of a Saperstein Poll that shows 54 percent of voters now support the Freedom to Marry and Religious Freedom Amendment. “We are heartened and affirmed by the poll published in the Columbus Dispatch because we have witnessed the seismic shift in public opinion toward marriage equality while working for more than a year to have a conversation with Ohioans and collect signatures in all 88 counties,” James said. “It is important to note that the Dispatch poll was conducted prior to Republican Ohio U.S. Sen. Rob Portman’s announcement that he was switching his position and supporting the freedom to marry,” James said. “This is a civil rights issue. A loving couple should be able to get legally married and enjoy the same family security as any other committed couple. “At the same time, our amendment protects religious freedom because houses of worship are free to choose whether to recognize or not recognize, marry or not marry, a same-gender couple.”

As we go to press the Cincinnati City Council is considering an ordinance that would require parades that receive city money to be open to any participants. Recently GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network ) was not be allowed to march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade because they “contain the words Gay and Lesbian” in their name and that “goes against an Irish Catholic event.” If you are not familiar, GLSEN works to make schools safe and prevent bullying against all children, including those who are (or perceived to be ) Gay and Lesbian. As a result of the parade’s decision, almost every single candidate for City office and several unions withdrew from the parade. They included Vice-Mayor Roxanne Qualls, Council Members Wendell Young, Yvette Simpson, PG Sittenfeld, Cecil Thomas, Charlie Winburn, Mayoral Candidate John Cranley, Council Candidates Mike Moroski, Greg Landsman, Kevin Johnson, David Mann, Pam Thomas and Unions Firefighters Local 48, IBEW Local 212,

While AIDS and Hate CRIMES are certainly not positive things, we seek to draw the positive from the negative. We hold up Paul Delph and Matthew Shepard and their families as models of how human beings should or could react to each other and how families should support loved ones whose lives are not in the box right wing religious zealots want them in. Delph, a multi-talented Cincinnatian, died of AIDS in 1996. His mother shut down her business to care for him. Shepard died in 1998, victim of a hate Crime and his mother worked for years to get passed a national Hate Crimes Bill, which is now law.

Our Faith Too!
Taking somebody’s word
By Karen Allen What would you do if you were taking a college course and one day during the lecture the professor warned you that other profs might disagree with what he is teaching, but that you Allen should ignore them because they’re wrong? Would you feel confident that you had the truth, or would you question if what you were being taught was really the correct information? Likewise, as Christians we would be foolish to believe one preacher’s interpretation of a Bible text and denounce all others because he says anyone who doesn’t agree with him is wrong. Yet this is exactly what most Christians do. Compounding the problem is the fact that most Christians, even those life-long pewdwellers, do not read their Bibles. Most don’t have a clue where to look up even the most well-known verses. But hey, it’s a big book with strange words, right? Who wouldn’t want to sit back and let the preacher tell them what it says? Someone who wants to be able to tell the truth about God, that’s who. I’m not saying don’t trust your preacher. I’m saying that everything in the Bible has an historical and cultural context and meaning, and the only correct interpretation is one based on those facts. Jesus said we’re to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind. (Matthew 22:37) To love God with your mind means that you don’t check your brain at the door of the church, or before you open your Bible. Solomon wrote in the first chapter of Proverbs: A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain to wise counsels… but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Also in chapter 12 Solomon wrote: …the way of a fool seems right to him. In other words, it’s possible for a fool to believe with every fiber of his being that he is right, but that doesn’t mean he is. Somewhere along the line many Christian decided that to “walk by faith and not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7) means to accept what you hear about God instead of actually getting to know him. That’s called being a fool. You wouldn’t (well, you shouldn’t) listen to anyone who tells you to ignore all other teaching on a subject that is important to you. Rather, you learn all you can by exploring all available resources and then choosing what is right based on evidence. What the Bible has to say is very important; too important to simply take someone else’s word for it.

Language *The title for my column last week was misprinted. It should have read, “Her/Hirs/ History” (“hirs” is a genderneutral pronoun.) Does it matter that the U.S. Constitution uses only male pronouns? Does it matter that the words of justice chiseled into stone on the exterior of the Hamilton County courthouse only pertain to men? Does it matter that when speaking of female identified athletes, firefighters, carpenters, artists, scientists, musicians, etc., typically people are sure to indicate, “female athlete, woman firefighter, lady carpenter,...”. However, men are just called athletes, firefighters, carpenters, etc. Our society still makes a male as-sumption and treats non-males as an oddity. All of this reinforces the gender binary. A fictitious dived that forces us to categorize ourselves under labels defined by others. Language usage does matter. We’ve made great strides on issues of diversity, especially with the LGBT community. In the last year, we extended health benefits to all 5,000+ City employees and created the first ever LGBT Police liaison.”

Have a parade? Get city support? Follow city’s anti-discrimination policy
As we go to press the Cincinnati City Council is considering an ordinance that would require parades that receive city money to be open to any participants. Recently GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network ) was not be allowed to march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade because they “contain the words Gay and Lesbian” in their name and that “goes against an Irish Catholic event.” If you are not familiar, GLSEN works to make schools safe and prevent bullying against all children, including those who are (or perceived to be ) Gay and Lesbian. As a result of the parade’s decision, almost every single candidate for City office and several unions withdrew from the parade. They included Vice-Mayor Roxanne Qualls, Council Members Wendell Young, Yvette Simpson, PG Sittenfeld, Cecil Thomas, Charlie Winburn, Mayoral Candidate John Cranley, Council Candidates Mike Moroski, Greg Landsman, Kevin Johnson, David Mann, Pam Thomas and Unions Firefighters Local 48, IBEW Local 212,

While AIDS and Hate CRIMES are certainly not positive things, we seek to draw the positive from the negative. We hold up Paul Delph and Matthew Shepard and their families as models of how human beings should or could react to each other and how families should support loved ones whose lives are not in the box right wing religious zealots want them in. Delph, a multi-talented Cincinnatian, died of AIDS in 1996. His mother shut down her business to care for him. Shepard died in 1998, victim of a hate Crime and his mother worked for years to get passed a national Hate Crimes Bill, which is now law.

Our Faith Too!
Taking somebody’s word
By Karen Allen What would you do if you were taking a college course and one day during the lecture the professor warned you that other profs might disagree with what he is teaching, but that you Allen should ignore them because they’re wrong? Would you feel confident that you had the truth, or would you question if what you were being taught was really the correct information? Likewise, as Christians we would be foolish to believe one preacher’s interpretation of a Bible text and denounce all others because he says anyone who doesn’t agree with him is wrong. Yet this is exactly what most Christians do. Compounding the problem is the fact that most Christians, even those life-long pewdwellers, do not read their Bibles. Most don’t have a clue where to look up even the most well-known verses. But hey, it’s a big book with strange words, right? Who wouldn’t want to sit back and let the preacher tell them what it says? Someone who wants to be able to tell the truth about God, that’s who. I’m not saying don’t trust your preacher. I’m saying that everything in the Bible has an historical and cultural context and meaning, and the only correct interpretation is one based on those facts. Jesus said we’re to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind. (Matthew 22:37) To love God with your mind means that you don’t check your brain at the door of the church, or before you open your Bible. Solomon wrote in the first chapter of Proverbs: A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain to wise counsels… but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Also in chapter 12 Solomon wrote: …the way of a fool seems right to him. In other words, it’s possible for a fool to believe with every fiber of his being that he is right, but that doesn’t mean he is. Somewhere along the line many Christian decided that to “walk by faith and not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7) means to accept what you hear about God instead of actually getting to know him. That’s called being a fool. You wouldn’t (well, you shouldn’t) listen to anyone who tells you to ignore all other teaching on a subject that is important to you. Rather, you learn all you can by exploring all available resources and then choosing what is right based on evidence. What the Bible has to say is very important; too important to simply take someone else’s word for it.

Language *The title for my column last week was misprinted. It should have read, “Her/Hirs/ History” (“hirs” is a genderneutral pronoun.) Does it matter that the U.S. Constitution uses only male pronouns? Does it matter that the words of justice chiseled into stone on the exterior of the Hamilton County courthouse only pertain to men? Does it matter that when speaking of female identified athletes, firefighters, carpenters, artists, scientists, musicians, etc., typically people are sure to indicate, “female athlete, woman firefighter, lady carpenter,...”. However, men are just called athletes, firefighters, carpenters, etc. Our society still makes a male as-sumption and treats non-males as an oddity. All of this reinforces the gender binary. A fictitious dived that forces us to categorize ourselves under labels defined by others. Language usage does matter. The motion also requires that, in all economic development deals and other taxpayer subsidized financial incentives, the City include a clause ( as a requirement of the deal) that the recipient adhere to the City’s non-discrimination policy. Seelbach said, “This kind of action is important as we continue to make Cincinnati a city where all people feel welcome and valued. We’ve made great strides on issues of diversity, especially with the LGBT community. In the last year, we extended health benefits to all 5,000+ City employees and created the first ever LGBT Police liaison.”
