THE GLOBE

What I have in my hand is a globe. It is a miniature
representation of the earth. The Earth is so large that we
cannot see all of it at once. A model of the Earth helps us
to see what the whole Earth looks like. A globe is a better
model of the Earth than a map. That is because the Earth
is like a ball. So a globe, which is spherical, is more like
the Earth than a flat piece of paper.
The earth spins around on its axis. Similarly, the globe can
spin around and around on this metal pole. The top of the
pole represents the North Pole on earth. The bottom of the
pole represents the South Pole.
The globe is tilted to one side exactly like the earth. This
tilting of the earth on its axis causes the seasons like
summer and winter.
In this globe, the portions marked blue depict the water
bodies like the oceans and the seas. The portions in other
colours depict the land formations.
