Jennifer Peirce LM 6890 Grants for School Libraries In education, funding is always an issue. There never seems to be enough money to optimally meet every need. I would love to be able to bring our library’s collection up to where it needs to be with current and engaging titles that meet all of the needs of the curriculum and student interests. I would love to further develop and promote our professional library for teachers. I would love to be able to fully fund different after school programs and activities. I believe that grants can bring in money and resources to be used in targeted ways so that the programs they help fund can be most successful. In exploring several resources with information about grant writing and the different grants available to libraries, I have found several grants I am interested in pursuing further. I also found that the grant websites can be a great resource for getting ideas to improve your school library media program in the descriptions of projects that have been awarded grants in a particular area. Grants to Consider for the Kearns High School Library After spending time looking through many of the different grant opportunities that are available to school libraries, I narrowed the types of grants and awards that, I believe, would be most applicable and/or beneficial to the Kearns High School library media program at this time into three general categories: collection development, program development, and teacher collaboration. I was able to find several grants that covered these areas and plan to pursue at least one of them in the coming year. Collection Development Grants:

Lois Lenski Covey Foundation Book Grants http://www.loislenskicovey.org/6.html This grant funds purchasing books for lending libraries that serve economically or socially at-risk children, have limited book budgets, and demonstrate need. Grants range from $500 to $3000. Kearns fits the qualification of serving at risk children, and with the addition of 9th grade, we have a real need to add to our collection. Will Eisner Graphic Novel Grant http://www.ala.org/gamert/will-eisner-graphic-novel-grants-libraries This grant would provide a large addition to the graphic novels collection as well as funding to promote graphic novels and a trip to the ALA Conference to receive the grant. This grant would be very useful to expand our graphic novels collection.

Program Development Grants:  Ezra Jack Keats Minigrant Program http://www.ezra-jack-keats.org/minigrant-program/ This program provides $500 minigrants for programs in schools and libraries for projects that foster creative expression, working together, and interaction with the community. This would be a great possibility for funding a book club, library-related art activity, book-making, or craft program. Grants to Fund Collaborative Projects with Teachers:  The Gale/Library Media Connection TEAMS Award http://www.galeschools.com/TEAMS/index.htm This award recognizes critical collaboration between teachers and the media specialist that impacts student learning and achievement. This includes a cash award, Gale products, a subscription to Library Media Connection, and Educator’s Professional Bookshelf. This award would be useful to add resources and fund ongoing collaboration projects. The descriptions of awarded projects is also useful for getting ideas for collaboration with teachers.  AASL Collaborative School Library Award http://www.ala.org/aasl/awards/collaborative This $2500 award recognizes ongoing collaboration between school librarians and teachers in meeting the goals outlined in Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs. The descriptions of award recipients programs can also serve as a source for ideas.
