Dear Friends,

The wKrmth and blessing of yo\xr loving encouragement in December has

brought us to our knees in gratitude to the Lord.
you have done for

Thank you for all

in 1978 and for your letters, gifts and cards.

¥e begin 1979 greatly encouraged and challenged, and very happy. On
one of our Christmas cards was a phrase that said, "Bach precious
day..." Oh, how that message reached our hearts!

Now as we face

the new year we are striving to realize more and more how very prec"

ioue each day is and to make each one bring glory to the Name of the
Lord.

GREAT NEWS! Three precious souls have accepted Christ and His sal
vation and joined the family of God in ChrisUan baptism. These are
the first converts at Christianville and we are really excited about
the begijMjing of the chuxch there.

TO OUR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS

We appreciate your sending your gifts to us through our forwarding agents. Du
ring December a few letters to Haiti were lost. We missed hearing from those
friends but were thankful that their gifts were safe with the Wheelers. If you do
not have an answer to your letter, please write again.
Boxes may be sent to us. Address them as follows:
JAMES HERGET - CHRISTIANVILLE
PORT-AU-PRINCE. HAITI

c/o Christian Pilots Association, Inc.

Christian Pilots charges are 25c a pound. Before sending, write and enquire
about items needed. Also remember that our greatest need is for building
funds. PLEASE MAKE ALL GIFTS PAYABLE TO CHRISTIANVILLE FOUNDA
TION unless they are personal or salary gifts to our missionaries.
The Board of Directors for CHRISTIANVILLE holds a monthly meeting and

keeps careful financial records. We sendan annual report to ourmailing listand
four-monthly reports to supporters who request them.

A year ago we faced the unknown - a new land, a new people and a new home.

Now if you would visit us we would take you all about and show you the beauty
spots, the history and the bustle. You would learn as we have, to know the real

Haitian behind these lovely smiles. The unknown Is disappearing and our hearts
are deeply entwined around a people we have learned to love. And at our home

you would feel the warmth of family life and share in the laughter and tears, the

sweat of work andthe joy of restat day's end. God has blessed our year in every
respect and we are grateful.

The walls of our first building are now complete and ready for the roof. Water is
flowing from our well; our projects have made good strides and our children

grow well. Old friends and new have shared our vision and plunged in to help
while our family has made individual contributions and sacrifices. Already
1979 has brought some exiciting experiencesand holds great promise.
The people wait...opportunity is here.

Thank you for the great part you have had in making this anniversary success
ful.

OUR NEEDS

In our last issue we mentioned needing a generator and funds to pay the
balance of our water drilling. We rejoice in telling you that the bill is paid and
$5000.00 has been promised for the generator. Please join us in our thanks and
praise to the Lord.

Plumbing, electrical wiring and a roof are our next big needs. Sometimes the
needs look insurmountable. But listen with us to what the Scripture says, «He

is able to doexceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think... So, nothing
is really insurmountable - nothing too hard for ourGod...for us or for you!
Let us have faith and trust Him.

"Then

shall
the

King
say...

No man is an island.

Each of us in turn needs a helping hand, an understanding heart, comfort to

allay our fears. That is why Jesus commanded us to care about our brother. He
gaveus a parableof a good Samaritan. And knowing that would not be enough

to open every man's eyes, he broke through with stronger words, "Depart from
me!» if we have not done these things, feeding the hungry, visiting the sick and
those in prison.

Must we come to the Master empyhanded?

I was sick

and ye
visited me.

No, the modern world's missionaries have made an open door for you to
walk the Master's way.

Christlanviile needs drugs, funds for x-rays, and particularly a building
for more efficient service to those in need.

Above is Shirley making her rounds from village to village in close
proximity to Christlanviile. She is efficient, kind, generous.
With $2,800.00 in our clinic building fund we are making plans for the
foundation. And by faith in our loving Heavenly Father whom we know
cares about these little ones, we will see every need met.

Dr. Morris Schwartz of Glenham, N.Y., and old friend of the Hergets while

they were still in Jamaica has been generously donating drugs for the
past year. Now he has spent a week with us checking our future needs
and advising Shirley in techniques. It was easy to ask one so eager to help
and so competant, to be our Medical Advisor. We welcome him to our
Christianviile Family.

In recent weeks we have been finding a high percentage of tuberculosis.
Drugs are now available that will cure this dreaded disease but there is

still a need for $4.00 for each x-ray. Our goal for the next 12 months is to
x-ray 250 people. By that time we hopefully will have our building and our
own x-ray machine.

We need your prayers.

you gave me

meat,

Poverty is no respector of persons.
Nor of nations.

The United States of America knevt/ her time of poverty and knew
it well. Yes, from coast to coast across that great nation men
cried from hunger and little children died.
Now the tide has turned and wealth covers the land, Yet America

has not forgotten. It sympathises with nations who at the
moment are «iess fortunate».

Thirsty
and you
gave me drink..."

Iw
This is why there is a surplus foods program to supplement the diet of those
who are lacking basic nutritional needs.
At Christianville we have established a nutritional center where some 350

children are now receiving supplements to their diet each week. It has become a
«fun time» for everybody. In the top picture you see the local policeman who
offers his services in helping to keep the crowd lined up, and Leona Gorman of
Cookson Hills Orphanage who helps «dish out.» Leona and her husband Ralph
are in Haiti for three months building a clinic in Port-au-Prince in connection
with their orphanage.

Our fellowsnip has been rich.
Even the boys help. Elleston and David are loading the bags of food into the van
while the other boys are preparing for their usual work day on the buildings at
Christianville.

Our supplemental foods come through the organisation Care. There is soy bean
oil, soy corn and soy wheat flour, dried milk and bulgur. The people express
their gratitude in work and in a general helpful attitude.

" For inasmuch as ye have done it one of the least of these...
ye have done it unto me."

WHERE DID

oM

YOU

GET YOUR

EDUCATION?

4r
Now that raises a long elastic discussion. For some of you it was
the one room school house when boys wore knickers and carried a

lunch pail and their books strapped with a good ole piece of
cowhide. For others it was a good foundation in modern schools

with ample class-rooms for each grade. Some of you can tell of life in great univer
sities and others in small colleges. And still many have made great contributions to
life without a full high school education
Why this discussion?

It centers around our interest in ourown boys. Each one is a bright promising young
man. Each one deserves all that we can do toward his education so that at manhood
he might be fully equiped. Do you beleive this? We want to know and would be
grateful to you for your interest and comments. At the moment our greatest educa
tional responsibility concerns Wayne and Robert.

Wayne graduates from high school in June of this yearand Robert is due to graduate
next year. Their native language is English. As yet they have not been able to grasp
enough French to assure them of a good education after high school here in Haiti. We

feel they should have the opportunity of American education. Friends who have
visited us here in Haiti have come to realize the potentials of Wayne and Robert and
are anxious forthem to go to college inthe U.S. However, this is an expensive plan. It
is expensive foryou to send yourchild to college, too. But you have the joy and satis
faction of seeing those kids get out and make something of their lives. Robert wants
to play professional football - a

dream he has had since early
childhood. He sees himself as a

Christian leader in sports. Wayne
isa scholar...not really sure what
he wants but leans to architec
ture.

Let's give these kids a chance to
make good.
Won't you write us and tell us
how you feel?

Want to help?
Let's pray together about their
future.

(P.S. They both want a year of
Bible College first.)

HERE'S AN INVITATION MEN!

We now live in an age v/hen men fo various

fields of work can go to foreigh countries and
contribute to missionary endeavors. RIGHT
NOW in Haiti we need Carpenters, Masons,

Electricians. Here is your chance to spend
two or three weeks working with CHRISTIANVILLE. Write us and schedule a time for your
contribution. We need you.

THANKS SO MUCH

We sincerely appreciate the many services offered to Christianville.. Don and
Julia Wheeler in their recent visit with us brought many useful supplies for the
work and gifts for the family. Their interest is far reaching.
Mrs Betty Hamilton has spent a lot of time and expense searching for needed
pieces of equipment and supplies in Orlando for the Wheelers to bring.
Then there are many others who have sent boxes including a shipment of Drugs
and Medical Supplies from Englewood Christian Church, Jacksonville, Florida.
Thank you, one and all for helping Christianvilie to live and produce for the

MUSIC IN FUN

CHRISTIANVILLE
JUNIOR ^

At Trinity School, where our
younger se* of boys attend,
music is very important. In fact, it

is really fun, Each of our boys is
learning a different instrument either a stringed instrument or a

HAITI

horn. Practice at home is quite
noisy but the family doesn't
mind. Here you see Derrick with
his teacher. Miss Elizabeth, and

his bass violin. The challenge
before the boys is to be able to
play well enough to go out on the
tourist ships and play with the
school orchestra. They are wai

ting excitedly for that day to
come. Often when we pass the
waterfront down town which is
very near the post office, we see

the tourist ships. They are lovely
big ships out there on that blue

water and would make any boy
want to go out for a visit. We

SPEAKING OF
MUSIC
That reminds me! We had a
wonderful visit in January by

Worry Osborn who is attending
Milligan College in Tennessee.

Morry plans to be a Medical
Missionary to Haiti someday. He
came to work for Christianville for
two weel<s. Part of his work time

was spent singing for the boys
and teaching them new songs.

Morry sings with the Milligan
Choir.

Oh,

how

those

boys

enjoyed Morry! We all did...and
you would have too. Besides
singing and playing his guitar so
well, Morry was a good worker.
He mixed cement, worked on the

building and did

many small

jobs. One day Morry did a very
special job...he pulled outByron's
wobbly tooth with Daddy's big
pliers!

CHRISTMASAND VALENTINES DAY

What an odd mixture! Well, it is Valentines Day and it is a great day. Two thmgs make it

great. One is that we got some lovely Christmas cards today and the other is that Grandma
bought some ice cream for the boys to have a party. Mommy bought chicken with some
Christmas money that was in the mail and Auntie is frying it. Now that isa real treat.

As the boys came home from school there was a lot of hugging and kissing while they
wished us ail a happy Valentines day. Grandma got her share of the love and she will get
some more tonight when that ice cream rolls out.
Grandma will be 82 In April and she is still a favorite

with the boys, helping them with reading and giving
them sweets for little errands they run for her.

Shirley will be in charge of the treats while Daddy
takes Mommy out for a Valentine dinner. Thank you
for helping to make our family life happy. And
please pray for us that we can help many more
children to be happy too.

"...FOR LOVE IS OF GOD"

This quarter we bring to you a love story of Haiti's Christianville. It is far from
being a total account of the love expressed by both Haitians and Foreigners for
Haiti and Christianville. There is no way possible to tell of the scores of helpful
deeds and words of wisdom given us here in Haiti. Nor is it possible to tell the love
story in full of the sacrifices made financially by Americans, Canadians, Britons
and Jamaicans. But it is an effort to remind ourselves that the Love of God is real

and when it is real it moves the heart to action. Our prayer is that the fullfillment of
this love will mean life and health and hope for our brothers in this land.

We thank you for standing beside us, encouraging us and helping
us to accomplish this goal of love - a Medical Clinic, a School
for children, Supplementary Food Program, and a haven for the homeless.

We thank you for your prayers and interest.
We thank you for understanding the real meaning of love and
Christianville's need.

LOVE'S ACRES

From the beginning it was love in
action that opened the door for
Christianville's

25

acres

in

the

beautiful lowlands of Haiti's tro

pical island. President for Life,

John Claude Duvalier, gave land
and assistance for the establish

ment of this project. Love for mis
sionaries.. or social workers? Oh

no. It was love for his people. In
this compassion for the needy of
this vast beautiful land with its

population of nearly six million,
the

President

welcomes sincere

people who are willing to work. We
are grateful to him for opening the
way

for

Christianville

and for

helping us. We share his love for
Haiti and daily we grow more
zealous and enthusiastic in

our

labors. Yet, our greatest tritbute is
to God who is the author of love. In

His Word He first proved His own
love for us and then commanded
us to love one another. It is this

love that we all share in the pursuit
of this mission.

LOVE'S COMPASSION

Little Sharla was berely able to cry. Her tiny body

HAITI

was covered with mosquito bites from a damp
night in our cane tieid. But God had His Hand on
her and had a plan for her life. A farmer on his way
to work heard the little cry and found this precious
little life whom someone in sheer desperation had
abandoned. It was not long before Giselle heard
the news and she went quickly to see the little
one. Compassion took her heart... a new heart, for
Gizelle had given her life to Christ a few weeks

earlier. Although the mother of two children already, and in circumstances no bet
ter than others, Gizelle offered to mother the little «lamb». The following Sunday
she brought the baby before the congregation and asked for prayers that she

might bring her up to be a healthy lovely Christian.

This is the power of the Gospel... the power of love, for love is God. (See cover pic
ture of Gizelle and Sharla).

LOVE'S SHARING

CARE, that great organisation that moves surplus foods from the U.S. to other
countries of the world, is responsible for our food program. Here you see some of
our precious «Senior Citizens» waiting for the day's program to begin. Through
love and gratitude our hearts are entwined with theirs • we belong to each other

LOVE'S LABOR

The house that Sam built.

Yes, that is what the little building
at the side of the hill was dubbed.

And good reasoning it was. Sam
Streu,

one

of

those

special

blessings that come to us in life,
began doing volunteer work with
our boys on Saturdays a year and

more ago. It was then that Satur
...a

days became not just a work day
but a fun day too. Sam was cheer

ful and hard working and the boys

learned to respond nicely to him. So we decided to build a small house that would
be generally useful until our home was completed and then would serve as an
apartment for a farm superintendent. It is well built with a bedroom, bathroom and
kitchen-living room. Here you see the building under construction. We are thank
ful for the blessing it has been to our progress. And we are thankful for Sam's con
tribution. He is at home for the summer in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

LOVE'S GIFTS
Less and Bess Lumsden came to

Haiti last year for a visit and this
year returned to share Grandma

Waiker's 82nd birthday. But this
was only a part of their reason for
returning. During the year Less
and Bess had spent much of their
time working for Christianville on
a volunteer basis. They have
visited churches in several states

and have returned to update their

/'JyJ-.
pictures and get news of progress. There is still another reason.

Several years agp they had saved some money and had lost it... their project
failed. Recently the money was returned to them and they decided to give the en
tire amount of $5,361.00 to Christianville. A letter followed saying. «The money we
gave you was the first large sum of money we have ever had to give away and we
may never have any more. As soon as we found out that we were getting it. we
decided that we would give it to you. You see, you are not only our friends; we
think you are most dedicated people we know. You are truly good stewards of what
the Lord sends to you and we think the Lord gave this to us so that we could give it
to you. We marvel at how much you accomplish so we are going to do the best we
can to promote your work».

Less and Bess asked us to report this news to you because they believe what

Jesus said, <<Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good
works and glorify your Father», and they hope others may be inspired by it.

God bless you Less and Bess. We thank God upon every remembrance of you
through the past 31 years. (Less and Bess, of Elizabethton, Tenn., made the first
gift to our missionary service when we are recruits to Jamaica following our gra
duation from Atlanta Christian College).

Here's Jim Walker at work lining up
the Clinic building. He and Rea, also
30 year friends, came this year to
work with us. Jim was with the U.S.

Postal System until retirement but

his full time hobby has always been
building and carpentry. Their support
and love through the years has been
outstanding, and it was love that ac
companied the gifts and greetings

from their church in Nebo, Ky. Jim
gave that Clinic building a great start!

LOVE'S SERVICE

There is just no way possible to tell the entire story of the dedication of God's people
in making Christianvilie possible. Some friends insist on their giving being

anonymous, quoting the Scripture, «Let not your left hand know what your right hand
doeth". God bless them... for each of us is used by God in His own wonderful way,
Some of our friends pledge regular service and we want to mention them here.

C. E. Shepard has for the past year travelled among chur
ches as our Promotional Worker, agreeing to a very small
salary. However, he has since the beginning returned the
salary to Christianvilie, and in addition given personal gifts.
God bless you Clarence and Grace for your dedicated ser
vice. We commend them for their love for Haiti and its

people.

Mrs. Blllie Sloderbeck, of Englewood Christian Chruch,
Jacksonville, Fla. has taken on the title "Missionary Lady>'

for Christianvilie. She has given months of dedicated ser
vice in gathering funds and drugs for our Clinic. Her love for
Haiti was born when she visited in March and saw the need

and the small beginning we had made toward the project.

She broke Ground for the Clinic and returned with great en
thusiasm. We are thankful for her efforts in the Jackson

ville area and now for their outreach into other areas. Surely
God will bless this labor of love.

Dr. Morris Schwartz, Medical advisor for Christianvilie,
returned in June for a second work-visit. He is keenly inte

rested in seeing the Clinic make an outstanding contri
bution ot the medical needs of Christianvilie area. Not only

has he contributed heavily with drugs and supplies of all
kinds, but he has gained the helpful interest of the Rotary
Club in Haiti. Dr. Schwartz plans a return visit to us in late

October or November from his home and practice in
Glenham, New York. We thank God for his loving service.

thanksgiving.

Our Mission Home is now much nearer completion than this picture
reveals. The roof is more than half finished and plastering is com
plete on one side. Plumbing and electrical conduits are all in and we

are hopeful that moving day is not far away... could it be October?

It Is a one floor plan for now with an open courtyard for plenty of
outdoor living. {We could use a volunteer carpenter for a couple of
weeks).

OUR VISITORS A BLESSING

What a lovely surprise was in store for us recently!
It was the visit of our Brownstown, Indiana church family. Minister ElvIn and wife

Betty Gray, who came on a ship to Cap Haitian. It was a great reunion when that
lovely group came down the gangplank with hugs and kisses and singing. We had a
whole day together visiting, sightseeing and sharing our mutual love for the Lord and
His work. But there were other surprises too. Suitcases and boxes and bags of lovely

gifts for our whole family were brought from the church -a shower of needed things.
Oh, our fellowship was rich and the assurance of Brownstown's care was a great en
couragement. We came home rejoicing.

OTHERS VISITED TOO

In recent months we have had showers of blessings with the visits of friends. In ad
dition to those who are already mentioned in this Evangel the following have been in
our home.

H.C. Tenbrook from Clearwater, Fla. He and his wife have been pillars of support for
Christianvllle and we thank God for their generous and loving interest.

Everette Cook, Kendallvllle, ind.,; Cliff Hazzard, Denver, Colo., Dr. J. Eisenbud,
Brooklyn, N, Y.; Pat Pugh, Jacksonville, Fla. {Sec. for Englewood Christian Chruch),

Sammye, Vainosky, Orange Park, Fla., Dr. and Mrs. Bob Underberg, Ft. Myers, Fla.,
Reggie and Esther Thomas, Joplin, Mo., and Pete and Eileen Ramsey of Mt. City,
Tenn. You might recall that the Ramsey's visited us several times in Jamaica and
worked with us there.

There is always room in our house... come and visit and share the joys of our ministry
with us. Seeing Haiti is to love Haiti.

In some places the water gathers in quite large pools justdeep enough to for a little

best place to have a good bath too. And Mothersdon't quarrel about wet clothes for it
only takes a very little while for the sun to dry them out.
Wouldn't you like to join the fun?

As soon as we move to Christianville we plan to have regular Bible Classes for the
boysand girlsto ted them the sweet story of Jesus and His love. It is a story that can
be told over and over •all of us know that and we never get tired hearing it. We want
each boy and girl to be able to say «Jesus loves me" and really believeit.
GRADUATION

Wayne's graduation from High School was an exciting time for all the family. There
were the usual school functions to attend but unfortunately Daddy had to go alone. It
all happened while Mom was in the hospital. But she was not too sick to give ins
tructions for Daddy &Shirley to make a little party for his school friends. Wayne is
still only 16 and so plans to remain at home for a year helping with Mission work. He
will be doing University correspondance courses and then plans to go to Christian
College next year.

SINGING GLORY

It doesn't really matter to either
Haitians or to Jamaicans or to Ame

ricans that we speak different lan
guages. All we need to know is that
we are singing praises to God. And

singing to the glory of God in a wor
ship service is understood by every

one. Here you see Derrick, Byron and
Dave singing a special number for the
morning church service at Christianville. They enjoy doing their part for
Jesus. We still have only a

lovely thatched church building but
someday hope to have good strong

building that will keep us dry and
comfortable..

THANK YOU

Check those smart looking tennis-shoes that are rolling out of that box! Hey, now,
you can tell that they are welcomed when you also check the smiles on our boy's

The Scriptures chosen for this issue are from the book of James in the New
Testament. We feel they fit perfectly with the beautiful performance of work at
Christianville this past summer. In addition to the «works» of more than four
dozen laborers which includes our own boys, there is the financial «backbone» •
those who have labored and brought the fruits of their labors to the aid of our
work. This is faith with works!

The complete picture is a most happy and satisfying one. "For we are laborers
together", doing the will of God.

Thank you for joininghands and making our circle complete.

CHRISTIANVILLE FOUNDATION has now become incorporated under the laws
of the State of Illinois as a non-profit organization. We are grateful to Mr. Richard
Cochram of Cochram & Garrison, Fairfield, III. for his excellent help in this ac
complishment.

Teen Missions International is a non-denominationa! organisation designed

to instill in teenagers a concern and vision for world missions. These teen

agers also learn the value of work and how it relates to their own Christian
lives. This is our second summer to have the blessing of a "working team» at
Christianville.

"The kids are here again!» The cry went up in chorus from our eight boys
when 35 Teen Mission kids poured into the house at 9 p.m. after a ten hour

plane delay. Our boys were deleriously happy. The teenagers were tired,
hungry and wet from a soaking rain, but excited. <iAuntie>> had a huge "camp
pot» of spagetti ready for them and an hour later they were sound asleep - on
the floors, on couches, beds, cushions and car seats.

Refreshed with the morning light and a good breakfast, they were ready for
the trip to Christianville. After staking out their tents they outfitted the im
provised kitchen with their own stove, pots and food and by evening the first
cooked meal was served.

Six wonderful weeks later the Team looked on their work, proud and happy

to know that they had contributed to the goal of Christianville, to bring health
and sustanance to those in need. The Clinic walls were all up and ready for the

roof, the Barn was ready for its roof. Grow Boxes were cleared and replanted,

fence posts were put in around the barn and house, and the public drinking
fountain was completed.

There were five leaders and 30 teenagers. Teen Missions requires that each
of the teenagers contribute $100.00 of their own funds toward the project. The
Team provided their own food and transportation so that Christianville would
not be burdened with any expense while they were on the job.

Following are pictures that will help you see what Teen Missions has meant
to Christianville. Truly this is a matter of Faith... with works!

Life for our boys this summer has beena little different than usual. That's because

we found summer school necessary for the younger set of six. And God provided
nicely for our needs.

Pat Fisch from Parke Ridge. Illinois, spent three months with us. She is a fourth

year student at Trinity College in the U.S.A.. majoring in education The boys made
excellent progress and had some good times along with their studies. A{ the close of

the three months there was a lovely evening of presentation of works, displays of
science projects, recitations, songs and finally a basket of gifts for "Miss".

In addition to herschool work and homework supervision. Par worked evenings in
the office and weekends at Christianville with the Teen Mission group. We are
grateful for Pat and her dedicated work and sunny disposition. Thank you Pat... and
God bless you.

Two weeks of boot camp

training prepared the team

for "giving their best to the
Master". The dedication,

proficiency and hard work
displayed by American
teenagers was not only a
marvel to onlookers, but a

joy as well. This picture
was taken on their last day
at Christianville. There
had been ups and downs,
the sick tent had

been

iJ
used for various tummy aliments but all in all the Lord had blessed and the
teens werehappy and thankful for their missionaryventure. You will see woven
into the story the progress of Christianville.
IWANTTO RETURN

Hal Huffman of Dixon, Illinois, one of the Team expressed his love for Haiti

right from the first. Hal is 18 and graduated from high school with the honor of
being chosen most likely to succeed. We found out why this choicewas made.
Hal was a most dedicated worker, eager to please and never too tired to do the

last jobof the day. Shortly afterhe began working Hal told us that hewould like
to return andgive a year'swork to Christianville. We agreed to pray about itand
talk with him in two week's time. Hal was determined and his work proved it.
Hal is now in the U.S.A. raising support and preparing to return. By the time

this reaches you Hal should be back on the job working with our Wayne and
preparing for the family move hopefully by December.

Boys and girls alike washed their clothes in the
evenings after work was done. There was just
enough time fora quick trip to the river to bathe
and to wash clothes before night prayers and

lights out arSp.m. Rising hourwas4:30 a.m.
After a hard day's work there was no big comfy
bed to climb into. Your tent and sleeping bag on

U.S.A.I.D. PROVIDES FUNDS FOR WATER WELL

After finding a baautifui spring on Christianville's land we found also that
the people in our area were using it almost exclusively for their drinking needs.
We had it tested and found it to be seriously poluted. Then we realized that
here was one of the reasons for so much ill helath in the area.

We completed the project of drilling for good water and then set a goal for a
public water fountain.

Here you see the teen kids at work... first the foundations and then the
finished job with our neighbors drawing water. This should be a great boon to
better health in our community. There are four automatic turn off faucets and
the water comes from the large tank underneath our house farther up the hill.

We are grateful to the United States A.I.D. program for contributing $3000.00
toward the drilling of the well. Their interest and help in Christianville's goal is
deeply appreciated.

A

TRIBUTE

John Joseph was seriously ill with tuberculosis when we first knew him at

Christianville. He was a young man and wanted to live. When we first brought the
message of salvation to John, he responded eagerly and was the first to complete his

obedience to God in baptism. Here you see him as he came up out of the water being
greeted by his friends and well wishers. John was a faithful as he could be those

early months of his new life. But gradually his illness took its toll. In July John laid
down his sick and pain racked body and put on a new one that God had promised
him. He passed from life unto life everlasting because he believed and obeyed God.
This is the victory of the Gospel!
GIFT FROM MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE

Robert and Wayne were excitedabout the Ministry of Agriculture's gift of a tractor
and wagon for Christianville. It is a small machine but very powerful. They have done
a considerable amount of plowing and are now ready for all planting. The machine
has more than eight attachments including a water-pump and a planter. We are
grateful for Government's continual help.

CHRISTIANVILLE

Everybody works at Christianville!
A full work crew of Haitians are building our
mission fiome.

But our boys help too. Wayne and Frankie
stayed on at Christianville after Teen
Missions left. They are laying blocks for the
work shop behind the mission house and
are living out there on the property in the lit
tle house that Sam built. In thedaysDaddy
comes and brings the smaller boys since

they are on holidays from school. The boys enjoy pushing the wheelbarrow
with rocks and sand and they help nicely in every job they are called to do.
Sometimes Daddy gives them "time out" and they go down to the spring to
search for fish.

Here you see David building his muscle^). One of these fine days we all hope
to be living at Christianville where we can be of greater help to our neighbors.
But in the meantime there is lots of work to be done. Saturdays are busy for

Mom. She runs the food distribution and the little boys help her fill the bowls

and pour the oil into bottles. Byron calls the numbers so the people come or
derly for their food gifts. Work is hard at Christianville but it is fun too. And expecially when you know there are sandwiches and cool lemonade waiting for
you in the little house.

THANK YOU boys ans girls for

your loving letters. We are very

Boys and girls, this is a very special message
to us from the Word of God. It means that when

11^'

we read and know what God wants us to do. we

must do it. You see in this Evangel how Ame
rican young people have come way out here to

Haiti to do God's will in helping others. God
wants you to help others too for we must love
others just as we love ourselves. He wants us

to obey in all things that He has commanded
us. We are all God's children and whether little

or big. He expects us to obey Him. This is what
we are teaching our boys here and also our lit
tle Haitian friends.

Our boys made lots of nice friends this summer. Little boys always like big friends
and so they really enjoyed all the special attention they got from the Teenagers. They
were eager to help carry buckets of water and buckets of cement for the girls And
they learned many lovely choruses just listening to the group sing while they worked.
The first week after goodbyes were said Ihe letter writing began and now they ask
daily. "Is there any ami I for me?"

Did you know that we speak a diffe
rent language in Haiti then you
speak? Our boys are learning very
quikly now and can chat away like lit
tle parrots with their friends at Chris-

tianville. You would probably laugh if
you could hear them for you wouldn't

understand a word they were saying.
One Sunday our minister Roosevelt
•'as sick and Daddy wanted to
preach. Wayne said, "Dad. I will inter

pret for you". And he did! He did very
well and Daddy was proud of the
lovely morning worship hour they had
with Christianville folks.We are thank

fine young missionaries.
Last Evangel we told you about
Wayne's graduation but we did not

have a picture to show you. Here you

MISSION PROGRESS - JULY 1979

Friends^

AUG 1 6 1979

It was a sad farewell as the Teen Mission Bus pulled away with shouts and
tears and hankies waving..

It, had been a beautiful six weeks.

The inside

walls of the clinic ar-e all up and the building is ready for the roof| the
barn is ready for its roof, the public water fountain is completed and in
use and many smaller joba are finished# Our sadness soon lifted as we

praised the Lord for blessing us with such great strides forward.
There were Spiritual blessings t;oo • p more baptisma and well attended
services. One of the Teen Missions Team, Hal, dedicated a year of his life

to Christianville and plans to return to us within a month.

We are truly

thankful for this dedicated life.

The Lord has laid upon our hearts a huge project at Christianville and

GET US INTO OUR NEW HOUSE?

We will need about $6000.00.

Do you realize what a great thing has been done thus far?

We will be able

to live in our home with no rent or mortgage payments to make!
THANK-YOU

We are most grateful for your gift this month. We are grateful for what
you have done to bring us this far. Once again the mails have failed us

and we still lack a report from June and we can*t get receipts to you
without it.

We are waiting now for a copy.

September 1979

OG"^

Dear Friends in Christ,

'"Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer, thou shalt cry and
He shall say, here I am...and the Lord shall guide you continually."
Isaiah 58: 9, 11
How beautiful and reassuring are the words of God!

We called and God answered.

Yes, many times this past month,

HURRICANE

DAVID PASSED US BY. We live in a strong house and so were not too concerned
about ourselves, but oh, to look about us and see what a hurricane would have

done to our people who already have nothing but bare straw shacks to live in,
was truly frightening. How we prayed! And the warmth and care that you
showed for us during this time is deeply appreciated. Thank you all.
The Lord led us safely through a serious financial bind in early September
too and allowed our credit to be honored.

We want so much to relate well in

this country as Christians..Spiritually, morally, financially...and God has
blessed and cared for us in this.

Sam Streu, our great friend of last year who donated much volunteer labor has
returned from Canada to volunteer his labor full time with us.

Sam is a buil

der and jack of many trades, a fine Christian and a lover of children. He
plans to remain with us until the Lord leads him otherwise. Praise the Lord!
His blessings never cease.
MAIL

PROBLEMS

Yes, there are problems in the work here - we must expect that. Most of the
time we can just pray and praise anyhow. But mail problems involve you too.
Julia Wheeler sends a monthly report of our receipts enclosing the letters
you send to her. This year five of the ten reports she has sent have not ar
rived. We are told that mails are very unsafe here and letters are stolen with
with the hope of finding money. We have now received copies of the last three
that were lost and receipts are enclosed along with our apologies and loving
gratitude.
But alas, the letters can not be answered - they are a total loss.
So, if you have written and not had an answer, please do write again and we
will hurry off an answer to you. From now on we are asking Julia to register
her^ejjorts to us with the hope that this will be safer. The money is always

.safeOb^^posited in the U.S. If you want to get important messages to us, you
too, could use registered mail..directly to us in Haiti.

H

Once again we want to express our deep gratitude to you
for standing with us in prayers and gifts. We see good
things happening for Christ here and even though our
house has taken longer than we had thought, we should
be living there by December. You can imagine how ex
cited the boys are getting. And they are working hard
too, to help. God bless you all!

Dear Friends,

o

m
l^at a busy month this has been! Building has been going ahead rapidly but it has
taken second place to the activities of our ministry to the people of Christlanvllle.
Kow we love this work!

Church services have been lovely and a vzarm friendly atmosphere prevails among
our people. They are seeking and learning of the Saviour and are becoming more
and more steady with their attendance. Now they are helping one another. Each
week they share in an offering to help a needy brother or sister. One time it
is help toward a hospital bill. Another time it is help for the building of a

brother's house. Yes, the Spirit of love and sharing is permeating our fellowship
and we thank God for this.

There was progress in our medical outreach this month too, as Poctor
Schwartz from Uew York came again to help. Every day for seven days
we labored among the sick and needy, under shelters, under trees, at
the roadside. There were vltimins for the children, injections for
serious illnesses and medicines for many ailments. Hundreds of people
came for help and no one was turned away.
Englewood Church in Jacksonville, Fla.
shipped us 4 huge crates of rich nutri
ment and we poured it out by the gallons
to hundreds of children. Oh, what

it with the powdered milk from CARE. Our weekly
distribution of whole grain food, oil and flour has
been a good help too.
The people know that we understand their needs and are trying to help and it
shows in their acceptance of us.
vrhen we stop in the river to wash our van
there are many hands to help. Once we did it alone while they watched. And now
we find it easier to help them with Spiritual things. Yes, we are making Inroads
to the core of their hearts..tlie spot where only love can really help.

Thank you for sharing with us...for feeling your brother's need and for caring.
Wc are so very grateful to you. Without you we could do nothing. So this is your
work, your ministry to the needy..,as we labor together. Remember the words of
Jesus:

«TRAIN UP A CHILD IN THE WAY HE SHOULD G0»

It is difficult to say which part of our work in Haiti is the most rewarding or
the most exciting. This quarter we want to remind you about the family life of
our nine Jamaican «sons» which we brought with us to this island nearly two
years ago. It truly has been both exciting and rewarding and.perhaps because
family life goes on and on, even when the day's work is done. When the tools
are put away and the people go to their homes after church services or after

food distribution or medical treatments, family life goes on. There is a good
dinner and family talk and then a bit of TV before family prayers and Bible
study. There is laughter and there are tears • fun and work and all goods things.
God has smiled upon us and blessed the growth of our children with healthy
bodies and happy minds. We invite you now to look in our family life and share
a little of our joy. We feel your love and prayers... like a warm blanket about us.
You have helped to make our family a reality. Thank you... we are deeply
grateful.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF CHILDREN

Now, who wouldn't be proud of a family like this! See if you can pick them
out... the mischief guy, the eager beaver, the serious man, the "flowers for
Mommy» guy, and "Daddy's Go-For». Each one is there with his definite trait
but all have a touch of all these things. They are a lovable gang, growing up
nicely in the Christian way of life. From left to right you see Byron, David,

Elleston, Derrick and Darren. David has been watching the carpenters with
great zeal lately and to his delight often gets to use the hammer and level.
Darren is learning block-laying from Wayne. We see Byron following Frankie
and the cows while Elleston often begs to remain home with Grandma on work
days at the property. Derrick is a patient «watchman»» around the tools and
valuables and is always ready with a smile to run errands.

But as soon as our move to Christianville is completed, there will be little
time for anything on week days except school work and travel. We will be just
15 miles from dowtown Port au Prince and a lovely 15 miles at that. At least 12
miles of the road is along the lovely seaside and green countryside. God has
blessed us with a good road as well. And He has blessed us with a precious
family - our nine Jamaican «sons». We are your missionary family to Haiti.
Followour EVANGEL and know us a bit better as we grow and work in Haiti.

DEMISE AND JIM HAYES

RECRUlTSTOCHRiSTIANVILLE
Our medical work needs leadership and staffing. Denise Hayes spent much of her life in the
Rodhesian mission field with her parents. Dr.
and Mrs Dennis Pruitt. Now that she has com-

plated her taining in the Nursing field, Denise

with her husband have dedicated themselves to a year of service with ChristianvilleClinic. They plan lo lead in the completion of our building (Jim Hayes is a car
penter) and the organisation of the medical work. Shirley Peace has resigned
from Chnstianville Clinic and from all medical work. Our prayers and best wishes
follow her. The Hayes hope to complete their plans to arrive in Haiti by February.
Please rememberthem in prayer.

YOU WILL REMEMBER SAM

Yes, some of you met him personally. Others will remember reading of his con
tribution of voluntary services all through 1978 and into 1979. Sam comes from

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and has dedicated his life to serving the Lord
wherever God calls him. After being in Haiti for about a year. Sam visited his home
for six months. During this time our invitation

to Sam to return and help us was working on
his heart. He felt that God wanted him to return

and serve Him again in Haiti. This time he said
he would devote his full time with us until the

Lord leads him otherwise. Sam is a great bles

sing to our work for not only is Sam a good
builder and craftsman but he is a

lover of

children and a fine Christian. His sunny dispo-

sition is a joy to all. Our most grateful thanks
to Sam for his voluntary Christian service.

T

Our new home is almost finished. We hope to be able to begin moving by early
December and this means that we should have our first Christmas there this year.

Truly it is a Christmas present for all of us. There have been long hard months of
work for our contractor has allowed us to do whatever we could so as to keep
down expenses. Now we are painting and Sam is hanging doors.

The house, so nicely built with ample room, will become a home when our

boisterous family of healthy boys move in. And this is what we have looked for
ward to for so long. There will be a nice big office to house the workshop for all
the projects ahead of us, and extra room for a staff member, a small family room
for fun and for prayers, a comgined dining room-living room, bedrooms and kit
chen. Yes, there is a guest room too, so plan your trip down to visit Christianvilla.

Our move in December means that all along you have beautifully responded to
our needs for building funds. It also means there will be a last big bill from the
hardware store in December which we are trusting God for. But when it is finished
we can rejoice in knowing there will be no rent or mortgage payments. Praise the
Lord! Then we will be able to concentrate on completing our clinic, school and
chapel.
We want you to join with us in thanksgiving to the Lord for His blessings
throughout 1979. And won't you join with us too, in a December prayer of housewarming? A prayer that will include asking God for wisdom and guidance for the
future of this work.

May God bless you with a most happy and blessed Christmas and a beautiful
new year.

Dears Friends,
I would like to sincerely thak you

for the bountiful support you have
given us. We do appreciate very much
your prayers too. They give us

the Spiritual support which is
very much needed in

our day by day lives and work.

It says in Matthew 7:7,
«Ask and it shall beglven»,..
This is what we have done-

asked the Lord and He has provided
continually for us. God has made us

promises and He has kept them
so we greatly praise the Lord because
He has been good to us. To those who have been here

I would like to specially thank you for your physical work and good fellowship
and for those who would like to come I would encourage you. My sincere thanks
to all of you for sharing in our ministry here.
Yours truly,
Wayne

FRANK

Dear Friends,

How is today's world treating you all? I hope really good. I really hope too that
you have been trusting in the Lord for your health and needs. He is and was and
always will be the only provider of all of our needs. I want to thank you very sin

cerely for all the help and love you have shown to our family. There is nothing in
return that we could give you that could show you how much we appreciate you
except our continual work for the Lord here. We are thankful for your prayers and

support which have kept us going throughout these many years. Friends, God
bless and protect you all. We wish you a very happy Christmas and a great new
year. Good bye.

MEDICAL OUTREACH

During October we made a concentrated effort to reach hundreds of people in
the Christianvllie area with medical assistance. Our efforts were wonderfully
rewarded. Dr. Morris Schwartz made his third visit to us this year and brought
supplies of drugs to supplement what we already had. . Daily we went together
drawing crowds in several differant areas. In addition to the medical help given,
we wefe able to offer nutriment to several hundred children daily for a weel^. Oh,
how great it was to pour out that rich goodness to those precious children! And
after a big cup of nutriment came a vitimin tablet. This is a program that we are

following up on a weekly basis now and with a new medical program geared for
December. We hope to continue the clinic building in January. The Lord is not
slack concerning His promises... There should be some really good news about
the medical work in our next Evangel.

AN
ARMFUL
OF

TWINS

Fellowship on Sunday mornings after worship hour is a precious time, it is here that
barriers are broken down and love takes root. We share joys over «tiny» things and
sorrows over big things.
Births and deaths are both common visitors and we find

peace and comfort in our own iives in being able to share with others in their need.
TEAMWORK

Even when one remains at home, the team is stiii at work. Paul and Janie Fontanot

were the Teen Missions leaders last summer. It was then that he pledged to return for
two months and do voluntary work. Janie would have to remain at home with her job
in order to keep finances going. Paul at the moment is erecting the roof on our barn

and sleeping quarters for our farm-hand. The Lord has certainly blessed us but our
volunteers claim that the biggest blessing is theirs. God bless you always Paul and
Janie!

BROWNSTOWNTEAM

A film with pictures of our three volunteers from Brownstown, Ind., a team
arranged by Elvin and Betty Gray, were unfortunately destroyed. But the work that

these fine fellows did will last for a long future. Armed with pick and shovels they
made their contribution. Marty

do. But there is fun too. On Halloween the boys asked for a party so we agreed. The
table was set with popcorn, marsmellows, sandwiches, koolaid, sweets and dough
nuts that Mommy made. And we all dressed up. Here you see Derrick and Elleston.

Our Haitian children do not celebrate Halloween so it was just a fun night for the
family.

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy». That's an old saying but it is true, so
we do take time out for fun. Darren is keen with table tennis and loves to play. And
when work time comes Daddy helps the boys move the cows and teaches them to

love and care for their animals. We had a nice little goat but when he got big he found
himself in the kitchen cookpot. Curried goat is a favorite family dish in our house.
Very soon now we should be moving to our new house in Christianville. It will be a
big change for the boys but they will enjoy life there just as they have in our city
house. You see, we have learned to do what the Bible tells us to do... to be content or

happy wherever we are.
_ w.

PRAYERS OF FAITH

We were coming from Christianville when
we noticed that our gas tank was almost
empty. It was night and there was not
enough to get us home. Derrick asked if we
could pray and ask God to help us. The
other boys agreed quickly and asked if they
could all pray. So they did, each in turn. And
God answered their prayer • we reached the

gas station safely. Do you remember to pray
when you need help? Our family does and
God hears. He will hear you too.

SPEAKING FRENCH

Each day that passes our boys find it easier to
understand their French speaking friends. At
home sometimes our supper hour is a mass of
confusion for there are two languages going on

at the same time. It is great fun. At church they

sing from their French Hymn Books and learn
Scripture. John 3:16 was the first verse they
learned in French. But they also keep up their

English language lessons as well and recite
Scripture verses in English on the way to
school. Isn't it wonderful that Jesus can un

derstand all of the children of the world when

they pray no matter what language they speak!

And He loves them all too, and right here in
Haiti He loves our beautiful Haitian children

and our Jamaican children just the same. And

we are glad that you love them too. Thank you
for helping us to help them.
Christmas will soon be here and since the boys

enjoy the game Monopoly so much, we would

like to get them a set in French. It would be fun
and also would help them to practice their
language.

FRIENDS AT CHRISTIANVILLE
The children at Christianville know that the

time is drawing very near when the family will
be moving close to them. They will enjoy
having our boys with them not only at church
but at

play times too. Robert will want to

organize a Junior Football team and we hope to

begin Bible classes early in the new year.
Also, plans are underway for the beginning of

our school building in the new year. Won't it be

nice to know that many of these little children
will be able to have a good school right near
their homes? Please pray that our family may

Tlie time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is always so short..,
there is so nilich to do and this year seems busier than ever for

we are hoping to move into our new house by Christmas. Every day
shows progress. Jim is putting on doorknobs while Wayne builds
the engine-room house. He lays blocks like a professional and
keeps up with general supervision as well while Jim transports
materials. Sam is building and hanging doors and will soon begin
the kitchen cupboards.

The boys are busy in school and looking forward to their school

Christmas party and then a short holiday.

December promises to

be a v/ondorful month, the Lord willing, and we look fon^ard to it
with joy.

It is a time we all love. Your friendship seems closer-your care
all through the year seems highlighted as Christmas comes and we
are more grateful than ever for you.

Our prayer is that God will

bless you with a very happy season as we all remember together
Eis gift to the world in sending Kis Con.
The Christmas message is evergreen - ever fresh and sweet and

beautiful and it gives us joy to be able to share this message
with our Haitian brothers and sisters.

Thank you for your fellox-jship, your love for us, your love for
the work of the Lord, your gifts, cards and letters. All are a
joy to us as we strive to preach and live the Christian message
both in our beautiful family and in our outreach.
"Mq thank God upon every remembrance of you."
May His love sustain you in difficulties and fill you with joy.
