Dear Friends,

Celebrations are a delightful part of all of the cultures of our
world.

To us here in Haiti there is a special celebration - a mark

of growth and accomplishment all wrapped up in ten wonderful years.
Yes, this is Christianville*s tenth anniversary year.

The Lord has blessed us with the production of a VIDEO FILM that
depicts, the work here as seen by two professional volunteers, Doug
Johnson and Tim Hardin.

grateful.

We are sure you will enjoy seeing it and perhaps owning

one to show to your Sunday School Class, Church, or friends.
You may borrow it from Christianville..write us at our MAF address

and we will send it to you.

If you want to purchase one you may for

$12.00 which covers the cost of the film and postage.

We have also writtfen a larger edition of the EVANGEL as a second part
of our celebration.'. This covers our work quite well so we hope that

you will take time to read it and to pray for us as we continue to
serve the Lord here.

Let's be thankful together and rejoice in God's goodness... for these

ten fruitful years, for all of God's children who have helped to make
it possible and especially now for this loving church and people who
have made our new film possible.

1978 WHEN CHRISTIANVILLE
WAS ONLY A NAKED CHALLENGE,

WE BRING YOU
THE STORY

THE MIRACLE

LOVING CARE.

WHAT IS CHRISTIANVILLE ?

In the beginning our hearts and lives were deeply embedded in 29 years of missionary
service to Jamaica, W.I. We believed that we would never leave. Then a chain of events

brought us to the place that we were convinced the Lord would have us serve Him in Haiti.
We answered an invitation by the President of Haitito come and build. Promises were made
and mostly kept - we were off to a good start.

Wefaced thispiece ofopen landwhenthere was nothing buta vision and a challenge. The
Lordprovided step by step - never failing in His promise ofcare and provision. To us there
were continued "miracles" - results of which we bring to you inthis tenth anniversary issue
of our "EVANGEL". The work is a many sided prism., one of those sides being the
marvelous and beautiful change in the lives ofourchildren as we have watchedthemgrow
in their Christian lives.

The other sides are the expressions of lovethrough Christianville's manyprojects...clinics,
schools, farm aids etc. And lastly, the wonder of building- buildingthat is intented for the

future, strong, spacious and uplifting tothe nameofour Heavenly Father. The Lord, through
Hischildren, has providedforthe 20 structures already built and we trust Him forthe needs
of the buildings now in progress.

A testimony to God's bountiful care is here at today's Christlanville. We have not done It

alone • many many hands have joined together. We have not borrowed money - we owe
no debts. The Lord has provided and we trust Him one day at a time.
"Blessed be the Name of the Lord!"

Come with us now and walkwith us through the years that bring us to the Christianville of
today. We welcome you I

CHRISTIANVILLE IS A SPIRITUAL OUTREACH
At Christianville the Spiritualthrust began with a medical clinic expressed out of the back
of our VW Van. Atoot of the horn brought the sick and ailing out of their huts. The late Dr.
Morris Schwartz from N.Y. who visited so regularly, often worked far into the night by
flashlight.

Three days a week we travelled from town to greet the sick and needy. In addition to
medical aid we gave food... tons and tons of it, provided by the USAID. There was milk,
wheat grains, cornmeal and oil. It was ourfirst expression ofGod's loveto a needy people.
We felt it was not yet time for formal services of a church - we wanted our people to
understand what the Gospel of the Lord Jesus really is.

Bythe end of that first year we were ready fora straw-roofedshelter forthe church and the
people were ready to listen. At the same timewe had begun our home so that we could
live among our people.

Today Christianville's Spiritual efforts are centered inthis beautiful building that seats over
500. Lucien Dorcelin is the preacher.

IT IS A WARM LOVING CONGREGATION

On Sundays there are regular morning and evening services, Sunday School and youth
hour. Daily early morning prayer hour, week night Bible study, ministry tothe poor, daily
school chapel and periodic retreats and seminars.

Many people have been united in marriage establishing Christian homes and building for
a more secure future for their children. The Wordof the Lord has been proclaimed and lives
have been changed.

Astrong emphasis has been given to our youth. Exciting quarterly retreats see an atten
dance of 175teenagers and specialtraining classes prepare our young menforpreaching

attendance often overflows the building.

CHRISTIANVILLE IS A MEDICAL CENTER
The first real need we found when we discovered Christianville's challenge was the need

for medical help. True it was that there is a hospital just seven miles away. But first you
need busfare. Then you need the fee for registration to see the Doctor. Then you are given
aprescription. And ifyou have reached thusfar financially, more often than nottheperscription goes back home with you for lack of funds to purchase.
In fact, many never reach the TapTap. (Haitian bus system) So, we
began... like we said, off the back of
ourVWVan. In addition to the help
itgave ourpeople, itgave usthe defi
nite direction forthe establishment of

our Medical Clinic. During these
years we have grown through the
help of many wonderful volunteers
to a more organized medical out
reach.

Today we have a full time Haitian
Doctor, Sandy our five year on the
job Nurse as his Assistant, and sev
eral other employees in our Lab,
Pharmacy, TB center, Family Plan
ning section, and Nutritional center.
We average over 400 patients a
week.

IT REACHES OUT A HAND OF LOVE
Shelter from the hot sun was a necessity and even withour efforts, the shelter overflows

daily. The medical handoflove reaches all ages...Moms and Dadswith serious needs, their
kids and the Grandparents. We have seen Sandy giving a baby mouth to mouth
resusitation while we drive frantically to the hospital. The baby lived.

Wesee Sandy leave the dinner tabledayafterdayto attend an emergency. Yes, and we
hearthe clinic van revupin the night when she iscalled tothe dying. Thereis nothing too
much for Sandy. Her hand is the hand of love.

Teaching is a constant effort in the clinic - youth must learn to carry on. Haitians teach
Haitians and Nurses get much of their training on the job.

IT TEACHES OUR YOUTH TO FOLLOW IN OUR STEPS

Claudetteis one of our High School girls. She has a deep desire to be a Nurse - wants to
give her life to Christian service. She will be a head-start student when the time
comes..ieave that to Sandy.

The Nutrition Center is a part of our medical work, too. It is designed by a Government

program and food isallotted through the generosity of theUnited States. They give toour
schodi, too. Babies and tiny tots upto the age offive are elegible on the basis ofsevere
malnutrition. Nutritional rates in the children are graded - too often the children are at a

dangerous level and we do find the parents bringing them to ustoo late. The number of
children in this program hasrallied around 400 for the past three years. And there arethree
centers - one at Christianville and two in the mountains.

Wesend outmedical "scouts" tofind the little ones inneed. The program includes nutritional

teaching for the mothers, daily food for the babies and a lesson from God's word.
At times when funds permit we have extras - and needed they are! Tucked in between is
a "soup-kitchen" for the elderly, no longer able to work. Here is another ministry of love.

CHRISTIANVILLE IS A DENTAL OUTREACH
There is a beautiful building - fit for our beautiful people.

clinic dedicated to the restoration of child rens' teeth., children of Christianville school and

children of other Christian orphanages and schools. Kids are often bussed in when

volunteer dentists come. And it is beautiful to see our children growing up with good solid
teeth, having them cleaned regularly and checked and restored.

But It did not begin here. In the beginning it was a chairkindly donated by a supporting
friend. Dr. VirgilUllum rescued the chair added accessories and went to work in a one room
dental clinic.

Like everything else at Christianville, it grew!

RESTORING TEETH - - - NOT PULLING

FAME, "Fellowship of Associates of
Medical Evangelism" provided the funds
for the building along with the help of
some individuals. Dr. Ullom through his
own Dental Outreach Inc. raised the

dental equipment from well-wishers in
the U.S.

Then Dr. David Leever popped in, hung
his hat and offered to be our Orthodon

tist. For three years now he has come

regularly every 6 weeks - helping our
kids, helpingothers in need, and gaining
his support from those who need the
work but can afford to pay. Itworks well
for our kids whose messed up teeth
would never have found correction. Did

you ever see a tooth growing out of the
center of the roof of the mouth of a child
? We did. And now it is back in place.

Amazing.

CHRISTIANVILLE IS AN EYE CARE CENTER
Itall started with a teenager who captured in his heart a vision, a longing to reach out to the
needy he found on his visitto Haiti. Lyn Graves was part of the first"Teen Missions"team
to Christianville. His hunger to help began under the hot summer sun while he mixed
concrete and ran fence wire.

Years later Lyn sparked off the torch for an Eye clinic to help the suffering of our people.
Dr. Clifford Brooks, professor at Indiana University reached for the torch and organized a
team to descend on Christianville. Armed with a number of the most needed pieces of

equipment - beautiful equipment, supplies and professionals the team went to work. Their
first visit only excited them to press forward.
GIVING VISION TO YOUNG AND OLD

/I.

WITH EXCELLENT EQUIPMENT AND SKILLED DOCTORS

On their third visit some members returned with the pledge of ongoing permanent
dedication. Other changing team members pledged their hearts to ongoing fund-raising for
the future. On their third visitthe team expressed their professional but also loving care to
300 patients. Over 60% of the patients were suffering from serious eye diseases. They
went out to villagesto visit the blind and relievetheir suffering from disease even though
sight was gone. One blind man was ledto the clinic and returned to his house seeing from
one eye. These are our neighbors.. these are North America'sneighborsand we remember
the message of Jesus who taught us to care about our neighbors. It's that loving hand,

CHRISTIANVILLE IS A SCHOOL
In some countries ofthe world the learning ofthe 3 R's iscompulsory. Kids grow up in this
educational paradise seldom realizing thatothers in othercountries grow with a hopeless
hunger for a trip through a book. Such it is/was in our circle of love at Christianville. The

circle reaches outas far as a radius offive miles and kids "hoof it" day afterday to school.
Young strong bodies skipping down rough mountain trails, wading through rivers with
school shoes safely on their heads, limping in with stubbed toes - that'sthe way many of
them come. Thefarther theycomethe more prompt theyare. Thosewho live close by are
sometimes tardy. Now isn't that life I
FOR THE 3R'S ... AND MUCH MORE!

Christianville School by 1989 should
see an increase of registration from 800

toour original goal of 1000. The pace is
set - the future takes care of itsgrowrth
day by day while God provides the
means. Young minds are turning the
pages of books they never dreamed

would be opened tothem. Andtheyare

S

normal kids. too. The school office sees

a few each day for discipline - those
spunky little kidswhowill probablygrow
to be the most successful. At least it
was that way in our time !

CHRISTMAS FOR JEAN-JEAN - AT THE MISSION HOME

In the beginning we sat down to think, to pray,to wonder... how we could ever raise the
money to educateourchildren. TheLord used a friend to sendthe answer.."well, why don't
you have a sponsor program?" We wereoff to a start..registered 200 kids and wept over
them as we did. Itwas a clear reference to the Scripture, "when did we see you naked and

hungry, clothed and fed you ?" We were ready to trustGod and plunge ahead. Ourfirst
sponsorwas followed by a second and third thatfirst month and with the funds we could
gatherwebegangiving the children a tiny plateoffood. By thesecond month the platewas
fuller. It was a great beginning.

Now our sponsor program provides education, uniforms, shoes and socks, two meals a
day, books, medical and dentalcare and a Spiritual grounding In God's Word. And the love
that flows from Sponsor to child is just thrilling I The kids write, "Dear Parents," and the
Sponsors write, "Dear Children." That's the way it is.
GOD'S PRECIOUS LITTLE ONES

THERE IS DISCIPUNE AND ORDER ...

The untforms are bright red - they start the day In a happy mood - cheerful they are. Line

up preceeds the National Anthem at Flag Raising and the mood is set for prayer. This is
followed by a devotional in the class-room. Good order, discipline and cleanliness makes
for good learning.
True it is that we are short-handed for space. We solved that one with morning and
afternoon school - different teachers, different kids. A daily Chapel service sandwiched
between the two school sessions, is a joyto visit;to watch the long lines of children marching
smartly into the Church building.
The school is divided into three terms, Christmas, Easter, and Summer, closing at the end
of June and re-opening first week in September. The summer months, just two, offer
specialized classes for restless eager kids who want more learning. They find the classes
fun - we make them so. In fact, making our kids happy Is one of our main drives..like at
Christmas when there are parties and treats and new clothes. And at Easter new shoes
and colored eggs. And VBS in July.

GREAT ATTRIBUTES FOR LIFE

THERE ARE VOCATIONS FOR EAGER FINGERS

Regular school life includes more than the 3 R's. There are sewing classes for nimble

It is difficult to keep up the stock.

The art classes contribute some beautiful work, too. They do banana bark book marks,
Christmas Cards, shell lamps, art - hangings, and many other gift items.

But hurry - come with us now to band practice. It's great! Ourfirst band is doing very well

It is a rough two and a half hours on foot up there. Inthe beginning as we often say, the

As you can imagine, food giving has always
been an enjoyable effort. And sometimes it is
an extra treat. Like today, the day Sam lays
down his work clothes to

attend church.

Today, as he reached home there were five
littlelx>yswaiting for Uncle Sam. It didn't take
long for him to find out the intent of their visit.
They were hungry, and... "Uncle Sam, could
you find us something to eat?" Fortunately
there were some good leftovers in the fridge
and the camera caught Sam by surprise as he
was slipping out the front door hoping to be
unnoticed I This Is what makes them "our

kids." They know they can come for special
needs.

But who is Sam ? We had only been in Haiti
afew months when Sam came to visit. He was

looking for a place to serve the Lord. And he
found it. Through all of these years Sam has
given his whole being spiritually and physi
cally to the work of the Lord at Christianville.
God has accepted his dedication and used
him mightilyl And we thank God for him daily.

CHRISTIANVILLE IS A FISH FARM
See our five small pools filled with various stages of breeding fish and older growing fish.
The large pond is nearby from which we harvested nearly 11.000 lbs of fish in 1987. That
is, with the help of the United Nations Developement team. They have done a wonderful
job here.

Protein is the third-world's greatest need and that means our kids needed it. They get it!
In the beginning, as we often say, while searching out the land God gave us, our boys ran
to us begging us to come-look. We ran together down our hill where the boys led us to a
beautiful pool of water hidden under thick tropical bush. Itwas a spring! As we knelt there
on the ground, we joined hearts thanking our Father for this lovely gift. We did not know
what it would be for but we knew God had a plan for it.

Later, one ofour Directors planted the seed in our hearts to establish fish farming. Today
we not only have our fish ponds but several ofourolder boys have established ponds intheir
areas where they find a stream of water.

Talapia is our main species. We also raise carp. Inour most recent harvest the bulk of the
catch ran from 1 to 2 .5 lbs per fish. They they are delicious!

CHRISTIANVILLE IS A BEEF AND GOAT FARM
Cows! You want to give us cows ?

We had only been in Haiti two monthswhen the news reached us. Heifer Project called
to tell us they wanted to give us a herd of cows. It was a beginning for a farm and we were
thrilled. Todaywe have 25 head ofcattle...and perhaps morebeforethe morning is over.
Those little ones keep popping intolife. This provides our children with another source of
protein. At first we butcheredon open ground. Now we have a butchery with a chain-hoist,
cement floor and water.

It was not long before we added goats to our farm and today we have upgraded our stock
with Nubian goats, excellentfor milk production. PaulRonk, ourfarm manager plansto give

you see Paul Ronk (top left) and a Vetteaching sorrie'techniques withyoung animals. They
start withspraying and advance to dealing withdiseases and problems. They learn delivery
of the young and butchering of the older.
Paul's plans include an excellent agricultural program in the new Vocational High School.
There will be farming, animal husbandry, bee keeping, fish farming, vetinarian skills etc.
Our kids have already had a good start through their Saturday 4H class. You ought to see
the pride in their dancing eyes when they bring up a wheelbarrow of nice vegetables from
their garden! It's great.

in Haiti the boys learn some of the same techniques that their grandfathers used., hoe and
back bending. But with more modern techniques mixed in through Paul's leadership,
farming produces much better and it makes the back bending more acceptable.
Our kids are off to a good start for farm life.

activity which we sometimes call a "three-ring-circus".

Early morning brings Celexi with the school wheelbarrow to collect the refrigerated

foods for the day's cooking for those hundreds of kids. Our secretary Hophnide, works on
the Sponsor Program, fits kids in uniforms and shoes.

After dinner at night there is always a group in the office planning the next day's activities,
reviewing blue prints, ordering supplies and chatting overthe exciting days work. Thursday
nights are dedicated to evangelism reports, Bible study and prayers.

Every day isfull - building iscontinual and our volunteers help to keep things rolling

WE WELCOME YOU
From the beginning we knew that we
could not do the work alone. The Lord
blessed us in this need with excellent co-

workers and a beehive of activity with
visiting work teams and individuals. And
the wonder of it all is that work and fun
make a marvelous combination. At the

end of a hard day the gang gathers at the
dinner table for the delicious dinner

cooked by our beloved Auntie. Laughter
and fun is all mixed up with the food and
we relax to its tune.

Last night the river was high but adults decided to cross. After

the service Paul drove the truck to the river and turned the lights on it so the

people could see to cross. The water was up to their necks and we feared for
their lives. They had 2 hours of walking to their homes after crossing the river
and so had carried tiny oil lamps to light their way. In crossing the river they
held the lamps high out of the water. In spite of the fears for their lives
everyone noticed the beauty of the line of lamps as they crossed.
How thankful we are for you! We can't begin to tell you all that is happening in
the work here, but we can express our love and thanks for making it all possible.

May the Lord bless you - this is your work and it needs your prayers. God keep
you close to His heart.

CLINIC

Foundations are complete!

Dear Friends,

This month we can't take time to tell you all about our volunteers, those who

came to work and preach, our painter who returned with a friend to finish the
school painting because he could not rest knowing it was incomplete,

We can

only brief you on a part of the busy days we have spent.

Why?

Because we want to talk about evangelism this month.

Let us remind you that Christianville church was our first congregation and
from there we sent out Brother Robinson to establish the Mt. church.

having up to and over 200 on Sunday mornings.
and deacons.

He is now

Recently he has ordained elders

There is a school there with 80 children.

Then we sent out Brother David to Jean Jean to establish the church there.

He

is having nearly 200 on Sunday mornings and often more than that at night.

He

holds two Bible studies weekly there. This week he has baptized two more, one
a paralyzed woman. And there is a school of 80 children there, too.

For some time we have been praying about a third outreach church and the Lord
has opened the door at Port au Prince. Brother Leon Dorleans found a group of
Christians who had joined hands in establishing a church in one of the poorest
areas in all of Haiti,

And we found Leon struggling with this group to find a

means of getting a roof over their heads.

So, we reached out in heart and hands and they joined our circle. Now our Monday
night evangelism report meetingsxand prayer time has grown. It is such a joy to
watch how the Lord blesses* this reaching out with the Gospel to the lost.

We are enclosing a picture-study that we made for Leon to try and raise funds
from his friends.

Now that we have "married" this work to ours, we are sending

the pictures to you to show you one of the fastest growing works we have seen.
The situation is desperate. These people are seeking the Lord and are sweltering
in the hot sun, packed in tiny rootns of a house, spread solid across the street
and now even swelling onto the verandahs of neighbors who allow them space to sit*
We decided to do something about raising funds with them.

They were eager and excited when we told them Christianville would match any funds
they would raise. In the month of May this group of people in this poverty stricken
area raised $352,05 ! We were amazed! One little girl said she would ask the bus
driver to only charge her half price so she could help her church.
We need YOU now to help us to help them.

Please dig down deep and help us go to

We must help people who are so willing to help

And God bless you, too.
