MEMOIRS OF THE MIAMI VALLEY
J. W. Hisey, one of the substantial men of Waynesville stands
very high in his community, and deservedly so for he has proven his
worth as a man and a citizen in many ways.
He was born in
Wayne township, Warren county, O., January 6, 1849, a son of
John and Rachel (Ridge) Hisey. John Hisey was born in Wayne
township in 1821, a son of Jacob Hisey, who came to Warren county,
O., from Virginia, in 1818, and located in Wayne township, where
he purchased at different times, small tracts of land, until eventually
he was one of the extensive landowners of Warren county. Rachel
Ridge was born in Warren county, O., about 1823. John Hisey was
reared in Wayne township and there spent his life.
He divided
his time between tilling his farm and preaching the gospel, and
(• 1
for over forty years was one of the beloved pastors of Warren
county. His long and useful life ended with his death in 1897, but
the weight of the influence he exerted both through his sermons
and in his upright manner of living, still exists and may be felt in
the improvement of the morale of his community, and the character
of his descendents. J. W. Hisey was rearer under the direct care
of his excellent father, and after completing his studies in the dis
trict schools, he took a two years' course at the Waynesville High
school. In 1871 Mr. Hisey was united in Marriage with Miss Ella
Creswell, a daughter of Samuel and Margaret (Card) Cresswell,
natives of Virginia and Warren county, respectively. Mr. and Mrs.
Hisey became the parents of two children, namely: Margaret, who
is Mrs. Albert Shutts; and Mary Earl, who is deceased. For many
years Mr. Hisey has been engaged in general farming, and he also
raises a good grade of stock, his place being one of the best im
proved in his township. His daughter and her husband live on this
farm. In politics Mr. Hisey is a Republican, and he has been a
member of the school board for the past forty years. Fraternally he
affiliates with the Waynesville lodge, I. O. O. F. The Free Will
Baptist church of Waynesville holds his membership, and receives
his generous support. A conscientious man, Mr. Hisey has always
lived up to what he believed to be his duty, and has never asked
more of anyone than he was willing to render himself. His indus
try, thrift and strict honesty have always recommended him to the
commendation of those who have been associated with him in busi
ness, politics or the church, and they appreciate his high character.
John D. Hoff. The agricultural activities of John D. Hoff have
covered a period of some fifty-six years in Warren county, where he
has large interests in Deerfield township, and during this time he has
E•
established himself as a capable and industrious tiller of the soil
and as a public-spirited and useful citizen. The family of which he
is a representative has a number of important connections in the
agricultural community of Warren county, where he was born in
1863, a son of John and Mary Ann (Dill) Hoff. His grandfather
on the paternal side, Reuben Hoff, was an early arrival in Warren
county, where he rounded out his career as a farmer, and his father,
John Hoff, was born, reared and educated in this community. Here
he was married to Mary Ann Dill, born in the same locality, a
daughter of Alexander Dill, one of the sturdy pioneers who assisted
in the early development of a section due to become one of the

most productive in the Miami valley. Alexander Dill, on his arrival
from New York, settled on a tract of wild land in Deerfield town
ship, which he improved and to which he added until he had 360
acres. He was a man of progressive methods and modern ideas,
and during his lifetime erected a good brick house and barn, which
today are characteristic of the sturdy character of their builder, as
they are still in a sound state of preservation. It is related of Alex
ander Dill that on one occasion, desiring to attend to some business
matters in New York, he made the entire trip on foot, although other
members in his party traveled by team. After their marriage, Mr.
and Mrs. John Ho£f settled on the Dill farm, where Mr. Hoff con
tinued to carry on agricultural operations until his death, October
23, 1899. He was one of the good farmers of his day and a man
universally respected in his community for his many sterling quali
ties. On the farm mentioned, John D. Hoff

this vocation he has found prosperity and contentment. In the
property there are 156 acres, farmed jointly by Mr. Hoff and his
brother Alexander, who makes his home with him. The farm boasts
of modern improvements, and is highly cultivated, being a splendid
producer under good management. While a Democrat in his polit
ical views, Mr. Hoff is inclined to be somewhat liberal. His only
public office has been that of school director, in which he served ably
for a number of years. Mr. Hoff was married June 4, 1891, to Miss
Lelia Beedle, daughter of Samuel and Laura (Bunnell) Beedle, na
tives of Warren county, and a family which is well connected in the
county, where were born Charles Beedle, Mrs. Huff's great-grand
father, Samuel Simpkins, her great-great-grandfather, and Isaac and
Hester (Lamb) Bunnell, her maternal grandparents. Mr. and Mrs.
Hoff are the parents of two children: Bertha, now Mrs. Lawrence
Davis, residing with her parents; and Mary, now Mrs. Lisbon
Ireton, living near Mason, O.
' Homer D. Hollcroft. Shrewd business capacity, special adaptiveness to his vocation, appreciation of his calling's many advan
tages and a firm belief in his own ability to succeed, have placed
Homer D. Hollcroft among the leading promoters of agriculture and
stock raising in the Lebanon vicinity of Warren county. From
the fertile soil of this locality his hands have brought forth ample
means and his present status among his fellow-citizens is that of a
financially strong and morally high farmer. Mr. Hollcroft belongs
to one of the old and honored families of this part of the Miami
valley, and was born in Warren county in 1865, a son of John and
Mary J. (Walter) Hollcroft. His paternal grandfather was William
Hollcroft, a native of Pennsylvania, who in young manhood mi
grated to Warren county and established his primitive home among
those of other pioneer settlers, rounding out his career in the devel
opment of a farm from the wilderness and the cultivation of the
soil. His son, John Hollcroft, was born in Warren county in 1834
