Tragedy at Institute
The events that transpired the 29'^ of April were so
momentous and horrific that describingthem isemotionally
draining. I usuallywritethesenewslettersin third person but
I find myselfincapable of doing it today. I am going to
summarize events that have occurred in unadorned terms,

but believe me;beneath mywords there isgreat pathos.
Mondaynight, April 29'^- the Chastainfamily became
victims ofa vicious crime. The Bible institutes'watchman was

attacked and bound. The thieves then assaulted the house.

They shot at Tyson through the windows as he tried to call
the police.Eight men battered open the reardoor with alog
andthen terrori2ed thefamily. Duringthe nextsixhours,they
loaded the two trucks that they had broughtwith them and
the Chastains* minivanwitheverything ofvaluein the home.
They hauledoffallthe shoes and clothes. They forced Betsy
to makethem ameal,then theytook the stove.The dryer,the
microwave, etc. went out to the trucks, all of Tyson's
electrician's tools,allofthe electronics includingthe school's
computers, the mission's video camera and the new digital
camera were loaded. The house looks like professional
movers had just finished.

The thieves forced Tyson to open the warehouse and
took thousands of dollars worth of tools: power saws,
buffer/grinders,drills, benchgrinder, vice, welder, welding
helmet,clamps, extensioncords,batterychargers, hand tools,
and much more.

How arethe ChastainsPTheyaresufferingposttraumatic
stress syndrome and are in counselingin the States as I write.
We plan on visitingthem soon. I know that many ofyou want
to minister to their needs, but I suggest that you let them
determine the time. I urge you to minister to them with your
prayers and yourmonetary gifts.
We have made changes in security:we added an armed
watchman day and night. The criminals promised that they

would killthe Chastains ifthey reported the incident to the
police. Our son Mark's picture appeared in the paper as the
one reporting the theft, so we have asked him to lay low
temporarily. Becauseofthis,construction ishalted (asthough
he could work without tools).
We were so blessed by the response of the Christian
communityin Honduras. Theytookthe Chastains undertheir
wings and provided them with clothing and shoes and some
toys for the boys. They provided housing and comfort and
helped them filethe reports and recover their van when the
police located it.
I went to Honduras as soon as possible, assisted the
Chastain family ingetting newpassports, and got them on a
plane to the USA.As I traveled,I struggledwith the question
'TSIow what do I do?" Do I giveup?Do I change the facility
into a Christian camp (whichthe country needs)? The Lord
foresawmydilemma.Whiletravelingi readSwendoll's book
on the life of the Aposde Paul. It reminded me of the
suffering and waiting that Paul had to endure to be used of
God. Then a French Canadian minister in the seat next to me

reminded me ofthe Lord's mandate to make disciples. On
the nextflight I metabankerwantingto serveGod. It seemed
that each individual that I metwas there to encourage me or
to remind me ofthe great need. Bythe time I arrived, I knew
that the Lordwanted me to continue. Inauguration ofclasses
will be delayed, but we are not turning back from the goal.
Margy and I will be returningto Honduras the last week
ofJune. This is one month earlier than originallyscheduled
but we feel the need to continue construction as soon as

possible.
Pray for the ongoing of the work and for safety in
Honduras. Also please remember the Chastains.

The Traveling Missionaries
For the past fivemonths Billand I have shared much of

the time together. Last December 26'^ we flew from
Honduras to Indianapoliswherewewere met byMadonna
Spratt's sister and brother-in-law.The temperature at that
time was 21 degrees. They took us to their house and the
following morning, with light snow on the ground, we
borrowed]ohn andMadonna's carand beganour travels. At
this point we have driven over 14,000 miles and visited
fourteen states.

Finally,we are setded in Knoxville and renting a double
widemobilehome for the remainderofour stay, untiltheend
ofJune. The past couple of days Alfredo (our son-in-law)
and Rebecca, alongwithAlfredo'sparents haveloanedusthe
necessaryfurniture to make us comfortable for the duration
of our stay.It feelsgood to be setded for awhile.
We are thankful for all our family and friends that have
hosted us.Friendshaveincludedthose fromBiblecollegedays,
fellow missionaries from Mexico, as well as fellow friends and

missionaries from Honduras. It iswonderful to have so many
friendsthroughout the United Statesand theworld.

Dear Friends,

We are currently staying in a double wide mobile home in beautiful eastern Tennessee.
We have most of the comforts of home and are blessed that this can be our home during
the remainder of our stay in the States.

We have made some decisions so would Hke to share them with you. We will be returning
to Honduras the last week of June instead of the last week of July as we had originally

planned. There remain five churches in which we are scheduled to speak.
Rebecca's pinning ceremony where she received her "R.N." from the dean of the
department of nursing was very meaningful. There were 110 graduates. The general
graduation of the University of Tennessee was overwhelming with 3,400 graduates and
about 20,000 spectators. The nursing students had a good time.
The Bible institute construction remains stalled until our return. At that time security

issues will be revised and then I will begin buying tools in order to reinitiate the building
program. Tools in Honduras will be more expensive than purchasing them in the U.S. but
difficulties of shipping and the potential for their loss in customs makes the additional cost
necessary. Classes will begin as soon as possible.

The Chastains are now ready to communicate with their family and friends via e-mail.
Please write to them at chastainfamily@yah^o.com

Please remember to write us at [email protected] There is currently no one in
Honduras to download our e-mails there. Thank you for your continued prayers.
God bless, Bill and Margy

Hello Family and Friends,

Last Friday, June 28th, we returned home after being gone for six months and having traveled for 18,000 miles by car. We
also flew from Atlanta to Cancun, Mexico, where we helped celebrate the formal wedding of Rebecca and Alfredo.

We had written a general e-mail on June 10th before we left for Cancun. But when Mark and Joy returned home after their trip
to the States, they discovered that neither their computer nor ours were ^nctionai so the e-mail could not be forwarded to you.
TTie motherboards had to be replaced in both computers, but now they are functioning.

Our time in Cancun was very relaxing and the wedding was beautiful. Mark and Joy drove from Honduras along with our
friends Todd and Lynnell Fields and their giris. Coming from northern Kentucky were Tom and Toni Schneller and their
children. It truly was a time of rejoicing.
Our latter days in Knoxville were very busy as we prepared for our return. We enjoyed special times with Rebecca and Alfredo
and it was hard saying goodbye to them. We drove to Indiana on June 26th and as always, Rick and Becky Rowan (Joy's
parents) were very hospitable to us and helped us prepare to leave the States. They drove us to the airport at 3:30 a.m. on the
28th.

Everything was in order in our house. Mark and Joy had done an excellent job of replacing us while we were gone amidst very
adverse circumstances.

We have added people to our mailing list that had written to us while we were in the States. Ifyou receive this e-mail and no
longer care to continue receiving them, please let us know so that we do not desturb you. We will be happy to hear from those
of you who have time to write.

God bless and please continue to pray for us as we resettle and continue to prepare for classes at the institute. The English
speaking church is doing well.

Dear E-mail partners.

Rejoice with us in God's goodness and the joy of being able to work for the
advancement of His kingdom. Letter after letter I mention the construction
at the Bible Institute and I know that it must be boring to read. But
yesterday we received a visitor who had never seen the institute before. He
was so very impressed that I have to teU you about it. He could not beheve
the whole construction had been done in two years and that we hadn't spent a
fortune on it. That made me feel good. The cost has been lower than any one
can guess.

One of the reasons we have been able to accomphsh so much has been the
participation of work teams from the U.S. Last month a team came in from
Hazelwood Christian church in Indiana. They are the 4th team that has come
from this church. They were wonderful workers. They installed doors and
windows and put on protection bars in the dorms; they also installed
electrical wiring and put ceiling fans in the chapel; and installed plimibing
and put in bathroom fixtures. We did so appreciate them. We are slowly
working toward opening classes in January.

We also had a visit from Steve Meade from Kokomo, Indiana. He was scheduled

to teach at the Institute before the problem and could not change the ticket
so we arranged some presentations of his material in local churches. His
studies of Timothy were very good but we lacked time to format a round-table
discussion.

Steve also joined us at the second annual missionary conference. The
inter-denominational reunion of missionaries was great; with a workshop on
security issues and a main speaker who brought us new insights into living
the "Whole Armor" of the faith. During this meeting it was planned to try
and have an annual retreat for high school age missionary kids who wiU soon
be returning to the U.S. to go to coUege. The purpose will be to help them
adjust to a new (US) culture and teach them to adapt to such things as
checking accounts and income tax. Some of the missionaries are former MK's
and are deeply concerned for these kids.

After ova return from the convention, Margy got very ill. A virus is
currently infecting many people that we know. She is still trying to
recover: it is a great weight loss program.

The English speaking church continues to astonish us. Attendance is around
ninety and the spirit is wonderful. Two of our members were in a very
serious auto accident, but God spared their Uves. One of the gentlemen was
operated on and two titanium plates were installed in his head. The church
covered their medical expenses because they are on pensions. They are
recovering well and have resumed their ministry in the prison.

There must be a dozen more praises I could write but I need to keep this
short.

God bless. Bill and Margy

What's New at the Institute?
There have been several positive steps forward at the
BibleInstitute's facility in the lastfour months. When Billand
Margy returned the latter part ofj une from their six-month
tripin theStates,theyimmediately beganworkingwithMark
and Joy. The goal was to prepare for the arrival of a work
team in August. Mark had some ideas of how to make the
watchman'sbuildingmore secure, sotheyremovedthe roof,
windowsand doors and addedastoryand ahalfto itsheight.
Now the watchman has a better view. He is also safe because

the access is via a strong steel trapdoor.
Then MarkandBillbegan installingthe steelstructure to
support the roof of the married students housing (4 small
apartments). As with the other buildings, the beams were
hoistedinto placeandattachedbyweldingthem to reinforcing
steelthat extends from the concrete. Then theywelded on
the additional metal that serves as verge board. All of the
metal used in the roof structure was donated by a relief
organization that was closing a warehouse. It represented a
huge savings. Havingeverythingreadyfor the work team's
arrivalwas a realchallenge, but, through hard work, Billand

Christian Church in Central Indiana did a wonderful job.
This is the fourth group that thischurch has sent.
BiU wants to relate a story about a visitor who came by
aftervisitinganother preacher trainingschool. He wasvery
impressed. He could not get over the fact that the whole
construction had been done in just two years. The beautiful,
but inexpensive, buildings reallyimpressedhim. One ofthe
reasons so much has been accomplishedis because of the
participation ofwork teams from the U.S. They add a special
sparkto the ministr5^ Bill isnow projectingthe beginningof
classes in January. But there is much to be finished by then,
so please pray for all the Hoffs.

Mark succeeded.

The originalwork team was to have been large but, for
several reasons, there were cancellations. In spite of the
reduced size, those who cameweredetermined to encourage
the Hoffs to press on toward the dream of preparing
ministers for CentralAmerica. And they, bytheir words and

The five-member team was housed in San Pedro Sula

and was driven to work each day by Mark and Bill. They
were able to roofthe married students housing, wire most of
it,installthe plumbingin the singlesixbathrooms, mount the
bathroom fixtures,installceilingfans, mount burglar barsin
the housing units, and install doors. Margy, Joy, and Joy's

Where Cultures Meet Christ
The Lord continues to bless the English speaking
church in San Pedro Sula. There have been many people
who have come and gone during its five-year existence
and yet attendance remains about 100 each Sunday. Most
Sundays there are visitors in the congregation, somedmes
from Europe or the States, but often from Honduras.
People tell us that they are touched and delighted to be
able to worship in English here.
Because this is a participatory church, it takes many
people helping to make the service function each Sunday.
Pastors visiting from the States are frequendy asked to

preach, but the majorit}' of the preaching falls to local
missionaries on a rotational basis. Each of the three Bible

school classes have three teachers a piece, so they don't
have to teach more than four Sundayseverythree months.
There are two music teams who rotate every few months.
The church does not have elders but it has several

administrativeteams. These teams represent the ministries
and areas ofthe church where the money is spent. Anyone
is welcome to participate in the teams. They meet when
a need arises and they give reports at the bi-annual
meetings.

Missionary Conference
The second annual missionaryconference was held in
Siguatepeque (which is about two hours south of San
Pedro Sula) the 12-14th ofSeptember. It isa mountainous
area that is cooler than San Pedro Sula.

Bill and Marg)' were blessed by participating in the
annual missionary reunion in Mexico for the 21 years that
theywere there, so they are happy to be a part of this yearly
gatheringin Honduras.

There were 100 people in attendance; half of them
were children. It is an inter-denominational group that
enjoys the time of fun and fellowship together.
The speaker spoke on the "Whole Armor of God."
There were also sessions on safety in Honduras and also
on preparing our children for re-entr)' into the States to go
to college —things they need to know such as balancing a
checkbook were discussed.

The food was plentiful and delicious. It is planned to
make this an annual event and hold it on Independence
Day (September15)weekendeachyear. Next yearMarg)'
willbe the treasurer andJoy is the correspondent who is
keeping an e-mail list of all the missionaries and will
correspond as the need arises.

Joy's Unexpected Trip to the States
(An excerptfrom Joy's newsletter.)
I hadtotakean unexpectedtriptothe States at the endofjuly
in order to attendmy grandfather'sfuneral. Grandpa lived 92
wonderfulyears and served the community as music teacher and
farmer. He ivas married to grandmafor 70years. They were a

greatexample oflove andservice toeach otherandsociety. Grandma
is94 andliving ina nursing home. Vleaseprayfor her, asshe must
suffergreatloneliness. It was a bkssingforme tobe able toga home
for those two weeks and dedicate the time tomyfamily.

It's Traditional: A June Bride
In June we flew to Cancun, Mexico to celebrate a
formal wedding ceremony for our daughter, Rebecca

and jacuzzi {sorryit doesn't rhyme) made the whole trip
wonderful. It was a special time to share with family and

Marie Hoff, andAlfredoMireles. They pickedagorgeous

friends and celebrate Rebecca and Alfredo's love for one

hotel resort and we spent a total of three days there. The
ceremony was held in a gazebo on the beach just at dusk.
The event was made more specialby the participation of
our long-time friends, the Schnellers, who flew in from
Cincinnati. Mark and Joy, along with Todd and Lynnell
Fields and their daughters, came overland through three

another.

Besides that wonderful event, Rebecca received

international borders to share in the celebration. I am sure

excitingnews: the 18th ofJuly, her birthday, she passed the
state ofTennessee's nursing boards, and is now officially
a Registered Nurse. She works in the Oncolog}' ward at
the hospital in Oak Ridge (about half an hour from their
home in West Knoxville). She works three twelve-hour

they enjoyed the adventure. The food, fun, fellowship,

shifts a week.

Mark and Joy's New Home
During the period that Bill and Margy were in the
States, Mark and Joy were house sitting for them. When
Billand Margyreturned to Honduras, Mark andJoy began
looking for a house or apartment to rent. They found a

beautiful home and moved into it in July. It is a 3
bedroom, 21/2 bath duplex. They have settled into their
new home and were happy to welcome their first guests
(the Hazelwood team) in July.
