HOOLE’S HIPPO HOORAY!

DOzENS of dazzling hippos have sprung up around Hoole – and intrepid pupils from Hoole Church of England Primary School have been asked to track them down! The school’s PTA has once again partnered with local businesses to launch a fun trail, which will see a total of 51 premises in and around Hoole displaying brightly coloured paper hippos designed by pupils. A map of where the numbered hippos can be found was given to the school’s pupils. All they had to do was fill in an entry form by matching the unique number of each Hippo to its business location and then be entered into a prize draw to win the opportunity to help switch on Hoole’s Christmas lights last month. The Trail was open to anyone visiting Hoole businesses and copies of the trail list and map can be found in Mr Fruity and Deli-vert, Faulkner Street. The Hippo Trail was devised by Hoole PTA, which is keen to support local businesses following the school’s hugely successful summer fair, and other events, which have

raised thousands of pounds for school funds. PTA chair Paula Norris said: “once again we were bowled over by the huge generosity of our local community when it came to supporting school events, particularly the summer fair. “As with the Hoolephant trail last year we were keen to get children, parents and carers supporting our brilliant local businesses in return – the trail encourages them to visit diverse premises all over Hoole and get to know them.” Head of Hoole CE Primary, Cheryl Walton, said: “Last year’s Hoolephant Trail was inspirational! The children are delighted with the 2011 Hippos, it is a fantastic way of connecting Hoole CE Primary with our local community.”
Pupils of Hoole Church of England Primary School spot a hippo hiding in Charles Street business Shoobaloo. From left to right: Harriet Letts, 7, Daisy Appleby, 8, Henry Letts, 5, Elise Davis-Tormey, Nathanael Maynard, 7, Jemima Maynard, 4 and Olivia Craig, 7.

Jenny defies the pain to complete New York City Marathon
HOOLE’S intrepid runner Jenny Beyer has returned from America where she competed in the New York City Marathon. Jenny completed it in 4 hours and 43 minutes and is busy collecting sponsorship for her chosen cause, the RSPCA. “it was a fantastic way to see the fantastic city! We ran through the four boroughs, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx. There were 47,000 runners so the atmosphere was amazing,” said Jenny. “To congratulate myself for completing i went to watch the Lion King on Broadway with my parents as they came with me to New York to cheer me on! Even though they didn’t spot me because of all the people! The crowds were amazing though and cheered us on constantly!” As for the run itself, Jenny admitted that she didn’t really take in all the sights as she was too busy concentrating on the race! “i was really pleased to see Central Park as that was where the race finished! It was a beautiful day for running and i found the route really enjoyable! i remember towards the end of the race it was getting quite tough and i noticed a runners T-shirt said “pain is temporary, proudness is forever”. i thought that was brilliant and it spurred me on to keep running for the whole race!” Jenny is taking Christmas off from her running exertions but is already lining up new challenges next year. Earlier in the year she climbed Mt Kilimanjaro and ran the London Marathon. To give to the RSPCA, please visit her sponsorship page at http://www.justgiving. com/Jenny-Beyer1

Raise a glass to brave dad Dave
HooLE’S Dave o’Brien is hoping to raise lots of cash for the children’s hospice where his young daughter tragically died. Some people climb a mountain; swim the channel; walk the length of the country to raise money for a charity that is close to their heart. Challenges that push them to the limit. Maybe because of a dodgy knee or a busy family life but also because of his regular sociable alcohol consumption, Dave has given up the booze for the whole of 2011 in aid of Claire House. His daughter Libby was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma cancer aged 16 months in April 2008. Following a year of therapy and numerous surgical interventions it was established that the cancer was incurable. Libby died at Claire House Children’s Hospice on 15th August 2009 aged two years, eight months and eight days. Having spent a family respite weekend at Claire House in May 2009 they decided that they wanted to be at Claire House for Libby’s end of life care. Unforgettable “The care shown to Libby during her last eight days was nothing short of excellent,” said Dave. “But much more than that was the care shown to us all as a family during what was an extremely distressing time. The most important aspect of this time was that Libby’s medical needs were completely taken care, this allowed my wife Pip, son Ben and i the unforgettable opportunity to be nothing more than her Mummy, Brother and Daddy.” This was a life changing experience and now Dave is dedicated to raising the profile and as much money as possible for

Dave O’Brien is raising funds for Claire House where his late daughter Libby spent her final days. the Wirral hospice in Libby’s memory. He has already raised well over £13,000 but is committed to do more. He started his alcohol ban on the stroke of midnight on January 1st and won’t be touching a drop until next year. New Year’s eve “What you have to know is that this is the year of a trip to Cape Town, my annual Dublin tour, many party invitations, the Royal wedding and not forgetting my 40th birthday celebrations,” said Dave. “i need support to do this and i’d like readers to consider donating regularly to keep me going. Maybe the price of a glass of wine or pint a week, a bottle of wine a month, a bottle of champagne a year? Please consider this brilliant cause when having a drink at home or out and about and maybe miss just one drink and donate the money instead! Ask your friends to get involved too.” His fundraising site is http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/daveobrien and you can follow how he’s coping on www. facebook.com (Dave o’Brien) and www. twitter.com (@noboozedaveob). The Faulkner bar and kitchen is supporting Dave in his quest with a New Year’s Eve party celebrating the ‘end of his year on the wagon’. See advert opposite for details.

Coping with Christmas
18 Tel 01244 350398

www.hooleroundabout.com

Lifestyle column with Hoole’s transformational coach and money magnet Marite-Claire Carlyle

….and its Christmas time again! Did you see it coming?
Have you already stocked up with the cupboard basics , chosen your Christmas decorations and bought most of your presents? No, me neither! Its crazy isn’t it? We know that it happens every year and yet for most of us Christmas suddenly seems to be on us and we find that ,once again, there is little time to get everything done that needs to be done, on top of our everyday lives. Then we start to grumble about everything that needs doing and the fact that the shops were already displaying Christmas items in October or how our sister is so annoyingly more organized than we are…etc etc and we lose sight of the fun and joy of Christmas, amidst the piles of garish wrapping paper and plastic shopping bags. This can be how we live our lives. Caught up with the minutia of everyday chores and getting our jobs done, it is easy to become so busy that we miss out on the very celebration of life; of what it means to be alive and how it feels to be brimming with so much joy and happiness that every day feels like the most precious blessing. At one of the busiest times of year I invite you to create space for you and your family. This doesn’t simply mean allocating more time in your diary but it means being fully attentive with the people you love. You may be rushing in from the shops with a load of shopping and your partner needs your attention. Put down the shopping and really be with them. Give them your full attention. If something is urgent, (maybe you want to get the frozen stuff into the

freezer first!) then acknowledge their request and let them know, really know for certain, that they will have your full attention in two minutes…and keep your word. Be fully attentive and with them within the two minutes or within whatever time you promised them. empty your head To slow down enough so that you can actually stop and be fully with another person is going to take three things : trust and planning and willingness. You have to be able to trust that, one way or another, everything will get done. It may not be exactly as you would like it to be done but it will get done. Can you let go of your need for perfection? The trick is to empty your head into your diary where you schedule everything that needs doing. Then once you know that its all covered you can be totally present in the moment that you share with another. Finally why would you be willing to make the effort? Why would you want to have enough space in your life to actually stop and really listen to someone else? Well that’s the easy question. When you are fully with another person , whoever they are, you will discover the love that fills in all the cracks in your life. When you give up your busyness, you will discover how connected you are to everyone else. When you slow down long enough to listen , you will uncover the true miracle that is your life. Trust me and try it this Christmas…you may just have the time of your life! Happy Christmas!

DeCeMber ColoUr
DeCemBer is a quiet time of year when there is little colour in the garden and the remains of brown foliage is the dominant feature. if possible, try to design your garden so that there is an area of winter colour visible from a frequently used window and also at the entrance to the house. this will give you some cheering colour in the depths of winter. Cyclamen have lovely marbled green leaves which contrast well with the golden and green foliage of evergreen shrubs such as Elaeagnus x ebbingei Limelight or the yellow leaved Choisya ternata Sundance. Plant some around the shrub for winter interest and add some small daffodils and crocuses for colour in February. Enjoy the beauty of frost on the leaves of plants such as the robust purple leaved Heucheras, holly or the indestructible Euphorbia robbiae. If you want scent in winter I recommend the winter box, Sarcococca hookeriana or confusa varieties. These unassuming little shrubs have evergreen foliage and highly scented tiny white flowers in winter so put a couple near your door or in an 64

GArDeninG By JAnet HeAtH
enclosed spot and you will be rewarded with scent in January or February. The evergreen shrub Skimmia japonica also has slightly fragrant flowers, flowers over winter and will tolerate almost any position in sun or shade. Jobs to do in December include digging over the vegetable bed and adding a layer of organic matter on the surface of the soil to rot down over winter. I would also recommend that you mulch the flower borders in winter. Use well rotted manure, or rotted green waste which can be bought from garden centres or your local recycling centre. Put a layer about 2ins deep around all your plants. This will act as a blanket keeping the soil further down, unfrozen during freezing weather. Many plants were killed last winter because their roots were frozen for long periods of time and a layer of mulch can help protect the more tender plants. Prune overgrown shrubs whilst the leaves are off the plants and you can see the old and new growth. Plant out bare rooted trees or roses once they arrive, provided the soil is not frozen.

Let there be light!

Many hundreds of people turned out for the Hoole Christmas lights switch on last month. The lights look fantastic, illuminating Faulkner Street and Charles Street. There were lots of stalls and shops open selling festive items and youngsters visited Santa’s grotto - in the beer garden of the Royal Oak! More pictures on the following pages

merry CHristmAs
By tHe reV AnDy GLOVer
reseArCH has revealed that 85% of people agree with the statement that ‘Christmas should be called Christmas because we are still a Christian country’. But it also shows that only 12% of adults know the facts of the Christmas story in any detail. So, if we Christians really want to keep Christmas focused on Christ, we must constantly re-tell the story of his birth in ways which engage positively with the public’s interest. This year I have come across have a very simple but dramatic idea. To re-set the nativity in modern professions and high street fashions. Shepherds become cycle couriers and plasterers. Wise men are successful entrepreneurs and their gifts are iconic ‘treasures’ of modern culture: a Swarovski crystal perfume bottle, a Faberge egg and a replica Damian Hirst skull. All are ‘sharply dressed’. But the traditional nativity arrangement is unchanged, with Jesus as its clear focus. And the message is compelling: ‘However you dress it up.... Christmas Starts with Christ’. It’s the meeting of Christianity and high street consumerism, with Christ in the middle.

Many people today do not have even a basic grasp of the facts of the Christmas Story, whilst conversely for many Christians it has become so familiar that it is hard for us to experience it afresh. This year I want to invite into the dramatic events and stories around the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. With the help of the ‘The Christmas Experience’, the story will be told in real-time, you can follow the dramatic last week of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection with a series of free messages via text, email or twitter. All this will start on 19th December and reach a dramatic climax on Christmas Day a week later, the amazing Christmas story will unfold by telling the story in an ‘as-it-happens’ way from the perspective of the Bible characters, be it Mary & Joseph, the inn keeper or the shepherds sent in 30 messages to your phone, smart-phone or computer. Each message is sent at the time the events would have happened as if from observers witnessing the story 2000 years ago. To get involved throughout the week follow me on twitter _andyglover and/or visit the Hoole Baptist Church facebook page and you’ll find me details of how to follow the story, so come and join me in what is the most amazing week in human history! Here in Hoole i would also like to invite to a very special Christmas Carol service, Carols in the Park. this will take place on sunday December 18th at 7pm and will be held in the narrows Community Park behind the Hoole Community Centre. This will be followed by coffee and mince pies in the Hoole Lighthouse Centre. What makes this a special event is that it will be part of a World Record Attempt, we are churches and individuals up and down the country who will take part in an attempt to smash the current World Record for the largest number of people singing carols together across multiple locations. Altogether we need 15,000 people to join in for 15-mins of carolling, to include Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful , O little Town of Bethlehem, Away in a Manger and Hark the Herald Angels Sing. Maybe here in Hoole we could gather 200 of us to be a part of this amazing World Record attempt and get ourselves in the Guinness Book of World Records for 2012!! What don’t you pop along and get involved…. Finally may I wish you all and very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and during this Christmas season, may you be blessed with the spirit of the season, which is peace, the gladness of the season, which is hope, and the heart of the season, which is love.

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 22 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.
