CRIMEFILE
AMONG the crimes reported in the Hoole area last month were:
• Sefton Road – Thieves stole iPads, a purse and car keys from inside the house and
then made off with the victims’ Mini and Audi cars.
• Sefton Road - A sat nav and CDs were stolen from a Peugeot parked on the driveway.
• Lightfoot Street – A wing mirror and windscreen wiper were damaged on a Mini.
• Greenbank Road – A thief broke in and stole a handbag but was disturbed by the
occupants and escaped, leaving the handbag outside.
• Knowsley Road – Golf clubs were stolen from a Volvo and a sat nav from a Mercedes.
The owner of the Volvo disturbed the thief who ran off leaving the golf clubs in a nearby
garden.
Too late to save library
THE closure of Hoole Library has been met with sadness by a group of campaigners. The
dilapidated building was deemed unsafe and unusable by the council and the library will
now be run on a part time basis by volunteers at Hoole Community Centre.
A group called Save Hoole Library has submitted an official complaint to the council about
the lack of consultation. Cheshire West Council says the building is no longer fit for purpose
and must close because of health and safety concerns.
The new St Martin’s Academy is due to open at a council building near to the library in
autumn 2013.

Hen-pecked Hoole!
A FLOCK of brightly feathered hens have sprung up around Hoole – and intrepid
youngsters from the area have been asked to track them down!
Hoole Church of England Primary’s PTA has been inspired by the school’s three own hens,
Masala, Penny and Ginger, to launch the hunt, which saw more than 50 premises in and
around Hoole displaying brightly coloured paper hens designed by pupils.
Pupils had to match the unique number of each hen to its business location and then be
entered into a prize draw.
The Hen Trail was devised by Hoole PTA, which is keen to support local businesses
following the school’s hugely successful summer fair, and other events, which have raised
thousands of pounds for school funds.

Staggeringly there are nearly 10 million
people in the United Kingdom who suffer from
some form of hearing loss with 170,000
people suffering with noise related deafness
or tinnitus as a result of exposure to
excessive noise at work. These conditions
are permanent and the over 50’s are
significantly affected by this condition.
Hearing loss is a common injury that can
remain unnoticed for years as it develops
gradually and people often put it down to age.
Tinnitus is the medical name for those
suffering from a buzzing or ringing noise in
their head. Approximately one in seven
people are known sufferers of tinnitus. The
condition is believed to originate from over-
active nerve cells within the hearing area of
the brain.
Employers have been under a duty to protect
employees from excessive noise since 1963.
This means that in many cases, those
suffering from noise induced hearing loss
and/or tinnitus can make a claim for
compensation against the employers, or
where they are no longer trading, their
insurers.

some people feel it is more difficult to move
around as easily as they used to. This is
highlighted in a new study by the Johns
Hopkins University School of Medicine that
showed mild hearing loss can so much as
triple the risk of a person suffering from a fall.
The study believes that the reason for this is
the brain’s inability to focus as much as it
normally would on balance and gait, when it
is struggling with processing sounds. The
findings highlight that people with only a mild
hearing loss, at around 25dB, were
staggeringly at least 3 times more likely to
fall.

THIS is a question that most people who
are looking to plan for the future are
asking themselves and have been for
nearly three years now.
With Lloyds TSB being the latest of many high
street banks to pull out of giving investment advice
to customers within their branch network, where do
investors turn to for advice?
Financial issues have hardly been out of the
headlines in the last ive years, ever since the credit
crunch irst came into the national consciousness,
and the European sovereign debt crisis of the last
two years has merely served to intensify the media
coverage.
Since the autumn of 2009, the European Union
has been struggling with the mounting debts of
some of its weakest economies, notably Greece and
Portugal, as well as Ireland, severely hit by the global
downturn. All this has led to mounting fears among
investors.
The crisis has even raised questions about whether
the Euro can survive as a currency, placed strains and
risks on banks across the continent and forced cuts in
government spending, putting several countries back
into recession.
So what are the opportunities for investors in
what remains a tough and uncertain economic
environment? Equity markets so far in 2012 have
actually performed well, a fact that may surprise the
headline writers. This could be due to a realisation
setting in that there is a political will to resolve the
crisis coupled with a strong desire among leaders to
keep European Monetary Union (EMU) together.
In recent times, investors have become worried
that there is worse to come and that share prices will
decline no matter what the industry sector or market
share of companies. As a result, they often buy and
sell at precisely the wrong time. The fear of missing
out pulls investors in when markets are soaring, and
causes them to sell when they have already fallen.
Yet there are exciting and attractive investment
opportunities out there. Take, for example, large
blue-chip companies with a strong and healthy
market position and a continuous record of
generating proits and earnings during all phases of
the economic cycle. Such companies have seen their
prices held back along with all others as a result of

After the events of the past few years, investors
need no reminding that equity investing can
be volatile. But history is clear - stock
markets tend to rise over the longer term,
despite short-term luctuations. Good
investment opportunities still exist for
the prudent investor, across a diversiied

FAULKNER Street was absolutely packed for the Christmas Lights Switch
on last month.
There was a real festive feel with stalls, shops open till late, people
dressed as Father Christmas and music on the stage, including
local ladies’ choir the Songsmiths.
The area looks fantastic all lit up in lots of different
colours and decorations.
Special guest was Benjamin Jeremy, from Hoole
CE Primary, who won the school’s hen hunt
competition. He had the honour of sitting on
Santa’s wagon with mum Denise.

I
MAGINE we are playing Family Fortunes and I was
Vernon Kay and we asked 100 people what they most
associate with Christmas, what would be the top five
answers they would give? There are any number of things
that have become part and parcel of Christmas, some things
we love others we hate!
In your opinion, what’s critical to Christmas? What’s the one
thing that if you were to get rid of it Christmas would become
unrecognisable? If you had to ditch one thing from Christmas what
would you choose? Turkey, mulled wine, crackers, the Queen’s
Speech, Ant & Dec, Wham’s Last Christmas, the work’s Christmas party,
Carols, Christmas Shopping, Sports Personality of the Year, Carols from
Kings, Decorations, the EastEnders Christmas Special.
Of course there are some things that you can ditch and it’s still
recognisable as Christmas. Personally, I’m very happy to do without
the brussel sprouts, sherry and the Wizard of Oz that were a permanent
feature of my childhood. But I want to suggest that there’s one thing that
if you get rid of it then all you’re left with is a bog standard Christmas.
It’s adequate; but it’s not deluxe. The trouble is that for many of us is that’s what we’ve settled for. I
know it’s what every church leader says at this time of year but bear with me, not only do I get paid
to say this, I actually believe it!
It’s been said that if you take Christ out of Christmas then all you’re left with is a mess - xmas. I
think that’s overstating it, but I like what he’s done there! Can I suggest that if you get rid of Jesus
Christ then you’ve ripped the heart out of Christmas? He’s what Christmas is all about. They even
named it after him! He’s the reason for the season. But we’ve lost sight of that amongst the tinsel,
presents and stress. The Gospel of Luke tells us that the first visitors at the stable maternity ward
were the Shepherds. They went to Bethlehem because they knew that Jesus’ birth was good news of
great joy for all people. And so if you take the Christ out of Christmas then what you’re left with is
bad news of real misery for everyone. It’s hard to get in the festive spirit with that sort of strap line,
isn’t it?! I’m not an idiot; I know that many of us are happy to settle for a Christ-less Christmas.
We’re content with the bog standard version. That’s your decision! But why would you go for a
Christmas that’s satisfactory, sufficient, passable or tolerable when you can have one that rocks!
Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide open heart that thinks of others
first. The birth of the baby Jesus stands as the most significant event in all history, because it has
meant the pouring into a sick world the healing medicine of love which has transformed all manner
of hearts for almost two thousand years... Underneath all the bulging bundles is this beating
Christmas heart.” During this Christmas season, may you be blessed with the spirit of the season,
which is peace, the gladness of the season, which is hope, and the heart of the season, which is love.

Wet weather holds up
Rangers’ title charge
HOOLE Rangers FC 1st team have played three fixtures since the last report, two cup games
and one in the league. In a strange twist of fate, both cup games were against premier side
Crossways, and both ended in good wins for Hoole.
The first game, in the Tom Gerraghty cup started tight, and the game was tied at 2-2 at
half time. However, in the second half, Hoole took control of the game and ran out easy 6-2
winners. The next game was in the league, at home against Levers, and despite having most
of the play, we were unable to convert possession into goals and it ended in a disappointing
2-2 draw.
The following week, we were once again pitted against Crossways, in the Chester &
District League cup. The team made no mistake this time and ran out worthy 5-1 winners.
Unfortunately the final game of this period (against Crossways again, this time in the Premier
league) was called off due a to waterlogged pitch, which is a shame as a win would have
pushed us into 3rd spot, with three games in hand over the top two.
Seconds
The 2nd team, in Division 1 have improved recently. In the two league games against 3rd
placed Orange Athletic, the team played some really good football, only to lose out by the odd
goal in both games. The first game ended 1-2 and the second game 2-3, following a great
fightback from two goals down. The Orange manager commented after the second game that
he was amazed we didnt get anything out of the two games. The 3rd game this period was
against Premier side Raby Villa in the League cup, and despite the team playing really well, we
eventually lost the match 4-2. The squad have significantly improved recently, both in numbers
and quality, and despite failing to win any of the three matches this period, our performances
have improved dramatically and we are confident that the rest of the season will see us moving
up the league.
Changing room
There has been no further progress on the changing room extension project, we are still
waiting for Cheshire West and Chester council to finalise 25 year lease arrangements for the
pitch and changing rooms.
