Lee Matthews Black Belt Academy is the biggest
chain of Martial Arts Schools in the West Midlands,
and is very excited to be opening a new class at Upton
Heath Primary School.
Master Lee Matthews and the Team have put together
two very specifc classes for children: Firstly we have
our Little Ninja programme for 4-7 year olds. Tis
is a specialised syllabus designed to introduce young
children to martial arts, working specifcally on the
skills which improve both their physical and mental
attributes. Our classes also help with confdence
building by challenging the children and getting them
out of their comfort zone, one tiny step at a time. We
work on skills such as balance, coordination, focus,
discipline, memory, and control. Our classes are very
animated, making them lots of fun.
Secondly, we run a children’s karate programme
for 8-11 year olds. All of our children’s classes teach
important values such as discipline, self-control and
respect. We spend a great deal of time encouraging
and improving attributes such as team work, leader-
ship skills and public speaking.
We also have an excellent Adult Kickboxing
program. Te Adult classes are designed for total be-
ginners; male and female of any ftness level, age and
ability. Trough safe and energetic fat burning classes
we can cater for your every need, ranging from weight
loss to self defence. Our classes also reduce and relieve
stress – our rigorous workouts with controlled kicking
and punching movements can do wonders for feelings
of frustration and anger! Tis is a great way to get a
total body workout whilst learning to defend yourself
and above all, stay safe.
Classes are held every Tursday, starting on 20th
January at the following times

What the world really needs is more love and less paper work. ~Pearl Bailey
If youve already messed up on your New Years resolutions, dont panic! There is
still time! Chinese New Year doesn’t start til the 4th february!!
As someone whose birthday is at the start of January I never manage to honour my New Year
resolutions and am hugely relieved to have a new chance in February!
Now there are many people who challenge the value of New Year Resolutions. They tend to
be the same people who declare a long list of wishful thinking and then become disillusioned
when they resort back to the “same old same old”. New Year Resolutions are a good thing.
They act as a declaration that you wish to change something about your life and in my
experience the frst step to change is in the declaration.
So do take the opportunity now to look at your life. What is working? What would you like to
work better?
Personally, like lots of people I want to lose weight. Like lots of people I know how to lose
weight. Its easy “ Eat less than I consume in calories”. If the frst step is the Declaration , all
the following steps are those moments during the day when you have a choice.
If you want to earn more money this year , start with a declaration of how much money you
want to earn. Then start looking each day for the ways that you could offer more value at work
(smile more, contribute more, ask for more) and seize any opportunities that come your way.
The secret to becoming rich is easy . You need to save. Whatever your job , if you start saving,
you can then start investing and soon you will have your money working for you rather than
the other way round.
If you want to change your life in 2011, you can. You just need to change your daily habits.
The trouble is that most of us are living unconsciously. Employing a lifecoach , personal
trainer or other expert to support you in your goals is essential. Its almost impossible to
choose the tools to get you out of your comfort zone whilst youre in your comfort zone . So if
you have New Year Resolutions for this year, take the next step.; commit to them, take action
and employ someone to support you. Why? Because you’re worth it.

Never marry for money. Divorce for money – Wendy Liebman

FRIENdS of Chester Millennium Greenway (FoCMG)
are hoping that by their next volunteer day (12th
February) the weather will improve and funding for the
planned wildlife pond will be suffcient for work to begin
along side this very popular shared pathway.
The idea of providing a dog splash further along the
pathway will delight dog owners as much as it will their
dogs. It is expected that dogs will be encouraged to use
the dog splash not the wildlife pond. A peaceful pond
and bog area existence for amphibians would improve
biodiversity.
The award-winning group have received various
donations such as the heavy-duty pond liner - kindly
donated by CETCO, bulbs - donated by Grosvenor
Garden Centre, Wildfower seeds - by Suttons Seeds. It
is hoped further donations will raise funds to stock the
pond and bog/marsh area. Cheque donations would be
welcome –payable to Friends of Millennium Greenway,

THe frosts and snow from November
through to January will have
taken their toll on some of
the more borderline
hardy plants. one
of my evergreen
shrubs, a
pittosporum,
which came
though last
winter has now
started to lose
leaves and will
probably need
replacing. I will
see if it sends
up new growth
in spring but if
not, I will regard
it as an opportunity
to so shopping and try
something new!
Start to tidy up by cutting
back dead foliage
on perennials and
grasses to allow new
growth to come
through. Prune
fruit trees and
wisteria. Older
Wisteria plants
can be pruned to
remove old stems
and long whippy
growth back to a few
buds. Prune back to
plump buds on newer growth
and cut out some congested older
branches each year to leave younger
stems to grow on.
The frst bulbs such as snowdrops and crocuses
will start to show but may fower later this year
after the hard winter. Hellebore plants will
be fowering. If you do not have these in your
garden they are well worth trying as
they can stand some full sun and
shade with the bonus of large
fowers in the depths of
winter.
There are some
clematis that fower
in late winter so try
Clematis cirrhosa
with small bell like
fowers or Clematis
armandii Apple
Blossom with larger
pink fowers. Both
are scented and have
evergreen foliage. Best
planted on a south or
west facing wall, fence or
trellis.
The vegetable garden can be
started with buying some
seed potatoes selecting
an early variety such
as Arran Pilot or
Pentland Javelin.
Start them off
by chitting in a
light, frost-free
dry area so that
they develop
short shoots prior
to planting out in
mid spring. Planting
tomato seeds in pots on a
windowsill later in February
will give you a head start for
planting out when frosts are past.
Mulch all fruit trees, bushes and cane fruit with
a generous layer of well rotted manure around
the roots and apply a general purpose fertilizer
to set the plants up for the coming season.

WINDOWS I DOORS I PORCHES I CONSERVATORIES I GUTTERING & FASCIAS
RECENTLY I was sitting in a traffc queue recently on Hoole Bridge, we were
moving very slowly, when the sound of a siren echoed out over the cars.
Instinctively people responded by moving the cars to one side or another
giving the room needed for the ambulance to get through and travel on to the
emergency it was attending. I thought to myself isn’t it great how people
work together in a moment when they perceive an emergency need.
Looking across at the burnt out shell of the Enterprise Centre I began
to think about the same response right across our city and country as
people have instinctively responded and worked together to provide
help and support for the countries and community’s devastated by the
different disasters across the world in 2010.
In my work as a leader of a Christian faith community I come across
many situations where there is no evidence of people working together,
where people are alone with no sense of community. It sometime seems
that most people are just looking out for number one, that is themselves
and they have no time for others. In the geographical neighbourhoods
around Chester communities are working hard to make where they live
a better place to live. But this goal will only ever be achieved when we
work together, churches around this city are working hard to serve the communities they are in but more
often than not they work in isolation from others. Across Chester there are many partnerships; different
organisations from the public sector, the private sector, and the community/ voluntary sector, the faith
communities of Chester need to be a part of these partnerships so that we can be a contributing factor in
working together and seeking the goal of “bring hope and making a difference for good”.
I’ve been refecting this past week on the word “hope”. What is the source of our hope? What’s the
difference between a wish and a hope? Why is hope so important? What do you hope for in 2011? For the
Christian, hope is an integral part of one’s faith and I would argue hope is also crucial to those who have
little or no faith. Maybe the events of this past year can inspire us all to come together, those with faith
in God, those with no faith to work together for the good of the whole and to bring hope. In some ways
we can’t afford to wait until there is an emergency; today is a good time to start, together we can make a
difference and be people of hope.
One practical thing that we at Hoole Baptist Church are going to do, that we anticipate could bring hope
to some within our community, is to run the CAP Money Course. With the recession showing no sign of
abating, we will be offering local residents in Hoole the chance to get their fnances back on track with a
free money management course. This will teach people budgeting skills and a simple, cash-based money
management system that really works. This course has universal appeal and is a three-session course,
featuring weekly DVD presentations and trained volunteers from the church who will then work through
individual budgets with delegates. The frst session will be on Wednesday 9th February.
