History group look at Victorian life in Hoole
HOOLE History and Heritage Society will be spending much of 2013 examining the area’s Victorian heritage. The society is putting together a project about Victorian life in Hoole, with the aim of putting on a celebration later in the year. Among the themes they will be exploring are: • ‘Railway mania’ comes to Chester, and has its impact on the area. • The changing landscape, land use, buildings and street plan; the expansion of Hoole. • Sudden rise in population, the developing society, pressures for social improvement: schools, public health, the ‘relief of poverty’, local politics, and law and order. • Local churches and their contributions. • Work and Leisure, before cars, but with pointers to the present. • Coming and Going by train. Football, the Royal Agricultural Show, the early days of commuting, ‘excursions’ and away days. • Hoole’s presence and emerging identity in local government. They will also visit the National Railway Museum to find out what Chester Railway Station was like, there is a visit to the Chester Records Office and they will be looking into the origin of street names, nicknames for places and historical associations of the names of pubs. For further details of the society and its meetings please call 320542.

DIVERSIFICATION IS THE KEY TO S
the best returns year after year, but there are two things we can be fairly sure of; the best performing investment in one year can often turn out to be the worst performing investment the next year and, by spreading your money across a selection of asset types, countries and sectors, your investments stand a better chance of achieving more consistent returns. During the global banking crisis of 2008, UK equities (measured by the FTSE All Share index) were at the bottom of the league table versus other investments, losing -30% over the calendar year.Yet in 2009, as investors’ confidence buoyed on the back of a more stable economic environment, they led the way, reversing all those losses with a gain of 30% over the following 12 month period. But is it just these so-called risk assets that suffer such extremes? Definitely not. If we take UK gilts a similar, yet opposite, pattern emerges. As investors sold off equities in 2008, the demand for, and consequently the price of gilts rose to record levels, making it the strongest performing asset class of the year, returning over 13% over the year.Yet as those conditions flipped, gilts lost -1% over the next 12 months.

‘Tis the part of a wise man to keep himself today for tomorrow, and not venture all his eggs in one basket”, or so goes the quote from Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote. And almost 400 years later, the sentiment is as true today as it may have been back then.
The discipline of diversification, in a financial sense, is one of which investors are being increasingly reminded given the volatile nature of global investment markets over the past few years. Furthermore, investors are now able to access a much wider range of asset classes than the traditional choice of equities (shares), fixed interest securities, property and cash. Demand from increasingly savvy retail investors has seen the advent of commodities, private equity and other ‘alternative asset classes’ added to their armoury. With the global economy seemingly teetering on the brink, the adage of having a balanced portfolio has never been as relevant. And if we take a look back at how various asset classes have fared both before the global banking crisis in 2008 and the period afterwards, it’s all too clear that holding a balanced, diversified portfolio is a key factor in achieving your long term investment objectives. No-one can predict which investment is going to produce

The message is clear: no single asset class performs consistently well.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested.

SUCCESSFUL INVESTMENT
The best way to avoid these boom-and-bust cycles is to make objective investment decisions – and this means that getting the balance right is vital. Sadly, too many investors realise they have poor asset allocation only when it is too late. It is why prevention is better than cure. Building a balanced portfolio is a question of managing risk versus return. Risk is not just about potential capital losses – you also have to consider the risk of inflation, for instance, and a reduction in income if circumstances go against you. For example, the derisory rates on cash deposit accounts means that most people’s savings are failing to keep up with inflation. Indeed, higher-rate taxpayers need to find an account paying 5.33 per cent to keep pace with rising prices. Yet there are none that offer this rate, of course, all of which is why many savers are being forced to look farther afield to make the most of their money.

Finance with Jonathan Seddon
gilts and corporate bonds are generally perceived as lower risk investments and, historically, have provided less volatile returns than other asset classes. However, equities are considered to be further up the risk ladder but offer investors the potential for greater returns. History demonstrates that investing in equities beats the returns of other assets, including cash, over the long term. According to data from Barclays Capital, over the period since the end of 1899 equities have provided annualised real returns of 5.1% versus just 1.4% for gilts and 1.0% for cash. Whilst the asset allocation for each investor’s portfolio will be dependent on their individual needs and objectives, what is clear is that relying on just one or two asset classes to consistently meet your income and/or capital growth needs is unlikely to be a successful strategy. The uncertainty impacting global markets is likely to be here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future. As the bailout discussions in Europe have shown, there is no quick or simple fix. But the same cannot be said for re-organising your investment portfolio and the discussions you might need to have with your financial adviser.

So the question is where do they look?
An investor’s attitude to risk is a key factor. The sensible investor takes into account the amount of risk they are able to tolerate both emotionally and practically in terms of their individual needs. It is therefore vital to understand the different levels of risk inherent in various types of investments. Different asset classes have different risk profiles. Cash,

Help at hand if you’ve got ringing in your ears
tinnitus awareness Week 2013 is to take place from 4-10 February. Organised by the British Tinnitus Association (BTA), the week aims to raise awareness of tinnitus, a condition that affects 10% of the UK population. Tinnitus is typically described as a ‘ringing’ or ‘buzzing’ in the ears with no external source. The focus for Tinnitus Awareness Week 2013 is the role that tinnitus support groups can play. Tinnitus support groups offer a vital lifeline for people around the country, offering a chance to share experiences, find out how others cope and discuss the latest information on treatments. The BTA hope to enable hundreds more people to access peer-to-peer support through groups across the UK. Hundreds of people are already benefiting from belonging to a tinnitus support group, but with an estimated six million people affected by the condition, the BTA hope that Tinnitus Awareness Week 2013 will bolster the number of people actively seeking support. Groups around the country will be holding meetings and events during Tinnitus Awareness Week 2013. To find out about events or groups in your area, visit the BTA’s website at www.tinnitus.org.uk or call the BTA on 0114 250 9933.
l The British Tinnitus Association (BTA) runs a confidential tinnitus helpline Mon-Fri 9.15am-4.45pm, staffed by trained tinnitus advisers and will be taking calls throughout tinnitus awareness week 0800 018 0527.

With the advent of the Chinese New Year , there is an opportunity to pick yourself up from the failed new year resolutions and the anti climax of January and look at what you’d like to happen in 2013. Who would you like to be? how would you like to be described? Most importantly, what would bring a ready smile to your face and guarantee your happiness? Imagine that you were in charge of producing the film of your life. You cast yourself as the hero or heroine of the film. How would you describe your hero(ine)? Gorgeous, talented and loving? Ambitious , creative and adventurous? Fearless, beautiful and committed to a better world? Remember , you write the script of your life. If there is something in your life that doesnt work, take the actions to make it work or move on to something that does work. Look around your home ...and then write and action of list of all the little things that you know need fixing. Clear out your cluttered drawers and paperwork. Call up those friends that sent you Christmas cards or the people you ve been meaning to call for ages. How you see yourself will determine how you see your life and this will deternmine how happy you are are and how others see you. It all starts from within you. You are the star of your own movie and you write the script for every single day of your life. Having coached hundreds of people from many different walks of life , from CEOs to students , I know that one of the fastest routes to feeling better about yourself is to do what you say you are going to do. Honour your word. If you said that you were going to do some exercise today , make sure you do it. If you told yourself that you were going to make five business calls today, then do it. If you planned to apologise to a friend today, make that call. In doing so you will become a person that you trust...and when you trust yourself you have the power to create the life of your dreams , every day! Of course, human nature being what it is, you don’t always want to do whats best for you. You become an expert on excuses. You get distracted by the daily details of life, and one year rolls far too quickly into the next. The book that you always wanted to write never gets written or the business that you just know would be a success never gets off the ground. Take a tip from those who make it happen. This year reach out and get yourself some support. Whether you need a life coach, a handyman or someone to do your accounts, contact them now. By not trying to do it all alone, you are more likely to keep your commitments to yourself and to achieve your goals . Make sure that your hero(ine) is surrounded by a team that supports them, and become the star of your own movie! Marie-Claire Carlyle is one of the UK s leading life coaches and an accredited Feng Shui consultant. She is also the published author of “How to become a Money Magnet “ and “Money Magnet Mindset”, both with Hay House Publishing, and the creator of the one day “Money Magnet “ workshop. February – the scent of spring
GardeNiNG bY JaNet heath
CroCuses, snowdrops and the tiny iris reticulata will be flowering in late winter. if you do not have any and can find room for them, go and buy some from garden centres as they will flower year after year. There is scope for more scent in the garden at this time of year as many shrubs have scented flowers to attract the few pollinating insects that are about. Try Daphne mezureum, an upright shrub with pink flowers or Daphne odora Aureomarginata an evergreen rounded shrub with light yellow edges to the leaves and pinkish scented starry flowers. Grow them in a sheltered spot, avoid heavy clay soils and place near a path or door so you can benefit from scent as you come and go. Hamamelis mollis or witch hazel can be scented too and do best in light shade with a neutral, moisture retentive, well drained soil. In winter they have little spidery flowers. For lovely fragrance try Hamamaelis x intermedia Pallida with pale yellow flowers. Another scented gem is Lonicera purpusii Winter Beauty, one of the honeysuckle family.
Again it likes a lighter, moisture retentive soil but is hardy and will fill a sheltered space with scent. It is also good for cutting stems for scent in the house. Prune apple and pear trees by early February. It is best to do this before new growth starts. With established trees, cut out any spindly, dead or diseased shoots but leave the main leaders (these are the main shoots that grow upwards) alone. If the tree gets too tall, prune about half of the leaders back to your required height, then the rest the following year. Finish pruning roses before March, cutting back hard to outward facing buds on newer growth. Cut out spindly stems and dead wood so you have a framework of strong stems from which new growth develops. Carefully cut or pull out dead stalks from ornamental grasses. Fine grasses can be combed with a spring tined rake. Grasses such as Miscanthus or Stipa require dead stems to be cut back near ground level but avoiding cutting new growth.

aYbe as a teenager you wrote the following in an anonymous Valentines Card to some one you fancied, i know i did!

“roses are red, Violets are blue, sugar is sweet; and so are you “ or maybe this variation is more appropriate in 2010. ”roses are red. Violets are blue. Please don’t kiss me, ‘cuz I have the flu.”

St. Valentine Day is the day of the year when you can express your love to the people you appreciate and love. But how did it all start? Is it just a cynical ploy by the card industry to get us to part with more money! Well, the story goes that here once was a priest named Valentine, he lived in Rome during the third century. At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. Claudius wanted to have a big army and he expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars, so they didn’t sign up. This made Claudius furious. So he had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. One of Valentine’s activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, he kept on performing marriage ceremonies – secretly at night. One night, he was caught, thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death.

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 22 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.

Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to his cell window. One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. On the day he was to die, he left a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty; he signed it, “Love from your Valentine.” This started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine’s Day. It was written on the day he died, February 14, 269 A.D. Many people mark valentines on this day - greeting cards, which can be romantic, sentimental or funny. The card can be anonymous. Valentine cards became popular in Great Britain in the nineteenth century. Many historians believe that sending poems on this day originated with the capture of Duke of Orleans, during the Battle of Agincourt. He sent his wife a rhyming love letter, from his prison cell in the Tower of London. February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and Saint Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. This year as we celebrate ‘Valentine’s Day’ remember that love actually is more of a choice than a feeling, Of course, there is a feeling we call ‘love’, and it’s a wonderful feeling, too. People write songs and poems about it; Hollywood film stars appear in movies about it, and it sells millions of pounds worth of magazines, valentine cards and paperback books. But recently I read this “There are lots of songs about falling in love, and there are lots of songs about falling out of love, but there aren’t many songs about just being in love, and all the ups and downs of it, how you make it last forever”. Love in a marriage or any long term relationship needs to experience romantic love but it is built upon the foundation of committed love where we make choices to work at the love we have, even when we don’t feel we are in love. Let’s use this years Valentine to renew our commitment to work at “being in love” so that the relationship we are in can last a lifetime.
