The New Year is all about new
beginnings - and that’s certainly
the case for many businesses in
hoole following the catastrophic
fre at the Chester Enterprise
Centre last month. Our offce
was among those to burn down
but we have been able to carry
on in business, albeit from new
premises at 24 Liverpool Road,
Chester, kindly offered to us by the
University of Chester.
We’ve got more on this story as
well as other news from hoole,
including the hoolephants, a new
speed limit and hoole Rangers FC.

Hoole news
A cold in the head causes less suffering than an idea - Jules Renard
Twenty is plenty for Hoole!
SPEEDING drivers in Hoole are being put on notice that breaking the speed limit is
unacceptable.
Cheshire West and Chester Council are starting a formal consultation into introducing a
blanket 20mph zone south of Canadian Avenue and between Hoole
and Road and Hoole Lane.
Cllr Adrian Walmsley said, “We have already asked residents if they
want a 20mph zone and the overwhelming opinion was that they did.
Speeding cars in Hoole’s narrow streets are simply unacceptable.”
Local resident Christian Dunn has welcomed the news, “I live in
Westminster Road and the whole house shakes when cars speed up
and down the road.”
A formal consultation with traders, emergency services and residents will now begin.
Cllr John Ebo who is driving the initiative with his ward colleague Adrian Walmsley added,
“Our inspiration is Portsmouth wherespeed has fallen by an average of 7mph by using
20mph zones. We want this scheme to prevent accidents and while there is much work to
do I am confdent we can fnd a solution for Hoole’s unique streets.”

Glyn Roberts, from Hoole Rangers FC reports on the progress so
far this season
ON the football front, Hoole Rangers FC
1st team are halfway through the season,
having not achieved the results we would
have expected, looking at the quality of
players we have signed this year.
Our league results are; played 11 won two
lost 7, drawn two. This places us in the
lower middle part of the league, but having
played some of the better teams, we are
now confdent that with a full squad we are
capable of beating any team in our league.
We also remain in two cup competitions
going forward which remain our best chance
for trophies this season
The reserves are really struggling this year,
having lost all 13 League games played so
far. However, fve new signings in December
should mean we have a big enough squad
to improve results in the new year.
I would like to take the opportunity to wish
all our players, and everyone involved with
Hoole Rangers a very Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year. Let’s hope 2011 will see
better results on the feld, to match the club
developments off it

In summer winter rain or sun, it’s good to be on horseback - Mike Oldfeld
hooLe shopkeepers have hailed as a
success the recent hoolephant Treasure
Trail with many reporting new customers
visiting their businesses.
The Hoolephant Treasure Trail was organised by
Hoole C of E Primary School PTA in conjunction
with Hoole businesses and the Hoole Christmas
lights committee. The trail saw 50 paper elephants,
decorated by children at the school, placed in Hoole
businesses. The school’s pupils and their families
then had the task of fnding the elephants around
Hoole.
The trail was the inspiration of parent Anna Marie Murray who explains: “After all the
support that Hoole businesses have given the school in recent years, the PTA was keen
to return the favour by encouraging local shopping and supporting the Christmas lights
display.”
Kate Hudson from ‘Snapdragon’ Florists added: “It brought in lots of people who wouldn’t
normally come into the shop. Many said they didn’t know what we sold until now.” The
owner of Mr Fruity Greengrocers said: “Any initiative that involves the whole community is
good. It is important that children are aware that they are part of a community.”
New headteacher, Miss Cheryl Walton, said: “The children have been inspired by the
treasure trail! I am delighted by the commitment to continue to strengthen community and
school links through the fun of the Hoolephant Treasure Trail.”
Treasure trail a big hit with shoppers

Queen's Park High school ofers a good,
broad and exciting education preparing
children academically and socially for the
21st century.
high expectations of behaviour and achievement for
all, together with a commitment to continuously raise
the standards of teaching and learning are central to the
success of the school; as a consequence GCSe results
have been on an upward trend for the last four years.
Last year the school achieved its best results ever at this
level with 62% of students in Year 11 achieving 5 A*- C.
Te school is committed to inclusion, developing the
whole child and is of a size that allows it to know each
child well adapting to their individual needs. Te school
has a reputation for excellence in Science, Mathematics,
ICT and also incorporating a specialist Visual Arts
College with a nationally renowned reputation. Te
school has a considerable number of gifted and talented
students whose academic progress is exceptional.
Queen’s Park high School has a strong tradition
of exceptional results at sixth form level that allows
students of all abilities to grow and develop through
both traditional academic routes and vocational
pathways. We are consistently amongst the top few
highest performing state schools in Cheshire and last
year achieved the highest percentage of A* A Level
grades in all Cheshire West and Chester state schools.
Just over 90% of students secured their frst choice
university preference with many obtaining “top ten”
university places including Oxford and Cambridge.
Te school holds an Open Day once per term and
taster days for Years 5/6 students during June/July, and
accepts students from across West Cheshire, Flintshire
and Wrexham. It is situated close to the city centre, is
user friendly for parents working in the city and is close
to the business park, being well served by bus and rail
links. Tose who visit and join us from further away are
always impressed. Over £3.5 million has been spent on
the building during the last few years. Te prestigious
1911 building is now a very modern and exciting 21st
century learning environment with state of the art ICT
facilities.

What’s left of the enterprise Centre.
Pic by Nick Thompson
DOZENS of small frms have spent the last
month trying to piece their businesses back
together in the wake of the devastating fre
which wiped out the Chester Enterprise
Centre.
The well documented blaze destroyed
most of the building, on Hoole Bridge, which
housed over 50 small units employing over
200 people.
We at the Hoole Roundabout were among
those to suffer – our offce was on the frst
foor which was completely devastated. A
few units on the ground foor survived but
are so badly damaged they are not usable.
At the time of going to press, we still don’t
know the cause of the blaze and we don’t
know what will happen to what remains of
the building – although it’s hard to see how
it could ever be saved.
As ever there is a human cost to such an
incident. Luckily nobody was injured as a
result of the fre but many of the traders
have lost everything and their businesses
are back to square one.
There has been a great spirit among the
businesses to help each other and most of
us are carrying on, albeit in new premises.
We would like to thank the University of
Chester for sorting out accommodation so
quickly and Cheshire West and Chester
Council have also been helpful – despite
numerous problems with the Royal Mail.

Thou hast no sorrow in thy song, no winter in thy year - John A. Logan
Angela Bartlett has over 26 years of
experience in the beauty and holistic
industries.
She is the Immediate Past Chairman
for BABTAC representing almost ten
thousand therapists in the UK. her
expertise is called upon to examine for
an International examination board and
judging competitions such as Young
Make-up Artist of the Year Award at
Clothes Show, London for 2010.
Angela is also a successful column
writer for trade journals Salonfocus and
Vitality. She has a beauty, holistic and
skin care clinic near Tarporley.
Q. I like to have my eyebrows waxed as it takes out all the
small hairs that tweezing leaves behind, but my skin has
become very sensitive to the heat of the wax. Can you
suggest an alternative?
A. Waxing is a very effective method for shaping the
brows, however the heat of the wax and the fact that the
wax adheres to the skin as well as the hair can be too
much for some people’s skin in the sensitive eye area. A
good alternative to waxing is threading, as it thoroughly
removes all the small hairs and is gentle on the skin. It
can take slightly longer than waxing, which
is refected in the price of the treatment, but
the results are great with excellent eyebrow
defnition. Many of my clients are now coming to
us for threading!
Q. I have tiny white hard lumps under my skin on
my upper cheeks. Can you tell me what they are
and how I can get them removed?
A. These little lumps are called ‘milia’ and
contain keratin, which is the same protein
found in hair and nails. Why they occur, no one
really knows but I usually fnd that the clients
who come for treatment of milia often have
dry, acidic skin. The lumps are located very
superfcially under the surface of the skin and
sometimes disappear of their own accord, but
if they are stubborn they can easily be removed
with short wave diathermy. The procedure is
very quick and relatively painless, and can
be carried out by therapists who have been
trained in Advanced Cosmetic or electrolysis
Procedures. Alternatively, they can be removed
professionally with a microlance.

Winter
January – the start of a new year
GardeninG by Janet heath
t
he garden in January can be
thought of as a lifeless month,
waiting for the spring bulbs to
start to bloom but there are plants
that will give some colour.
The winter fowering jasmine, Jasminum
nudiforum will fower throughout winter when
the weather is mild with little yellow fowers on
arching stems. It is easy to propagate as stems
that touch the ground will form roots so if you
know someone with an established plant you
can beg some stems to start your own shrub.
I can be left to grow un-pruned, preferably
against a fence or kept trimmed to grow up a
wall.
Some winter fowering heathers (Ericas) will
start to fower now so look out for plants in
garden centres to add colour around the base of
your winter jasmine. Hebe red Edge
is a good winter evergreen low
shrub with the tips of the
buds turning a deep shade
of deep pink in the cold
of winter. It will grow
to a low dome shape
about 1m in diameter
and 50cm
tall.
Coloured bark on trees and shrubs is also very
attractive. If you have space for trees, the silver
birches such as Betula ermanii with creamy
ivory bark glow in the winter sun. Inter-plant
with coloured stemmed dogwoods such as
Cornus alba Elegantissima (red stems) or
Cornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire (orange to red
stems) and under-plant these with snowdrops
and crocuses for a stunning winter show. This
combination would look good in a wide border
lining a drive.
Buy in frst early seed potatoes if you want
to grow new potatoes for early harvesting.
Set them in a cool frost free place in the light
to encourage shoots to start growing. This
is known as “chitting” your potatoes. Keep
netting over any brassicas to protect them from
pigeons. Pigeons can destroy a plant in a day!
Continue to dig over new beds or borders
leaving the soil in lumps to b e
broken down by frost into a
crumbly tilth ready for
planting in spring. Put a
layer or garden compost
or manure on the top
to help improve the
soil structure.

becoming the Pastor and
now Team Leader.
here we are in the frst month of a brand New Year – 2011! The
start of a New Year can only mean one thing, New Year resolutions!
People will be vowing to lose weight, stop smoking, stick to a
budget, save money, fnd a better job, become more organized,
exercise more, be more patient, eat better, and ________ (fll in
your own resolution). new year’s resolutions have been with us
for 4,000 years, ever since the Babylonians began celebrating
the start of each new planting cycle. the babylonians were
the frst to have New Year’s resolutions. The most common
promises were to return borrowed farm equipment and
pay off old debts. i’m all for new year’s resolutions. but do i
keep these resolutions? and what about you? do you keep your
resolutions?
Fridtjof Nansen was a Norwegian explorer who led an expedition to the
Arctic Ocean in a search for the North Pole. He took his ship in very deep
water and, as part of his studies, he would drop a sounding line to check
the ocean’s depth. Since the line was too short to reach the bottom of the
ocean, he would record the date, time, location, length of line, and a fnal
note of “deeper than that”. He then lowered a longer line with the same result and notation, “deeper
than that”. Another attempt, still “deeper than that”. Finally, after lowering his longest line, the logbook
received the fnal notation of so and so length of line and “deeper than that”.
I’d like to suggest to you that that’s the way God’s love is. No matter how we may try to measure it, his
love is deeper than that. John tells us in I John 4:8 that “God is love”, but I feel rather overwhelmed and
challenged by the task of trying to explain this incredible truth.
The Christian writer, A.W. Tozer also struggled to explain God’s love as well. He once said, “I can no
more do justice to this awesome and wonder-flled topic than a child can grasp a star. Still, by reaching
toward the star the child may call attention to it and even indicate the direction one must look to see it.
And so, I stretch my heart toward the high, shining love of God so that we may be encouraged to look up
and have hope.”
As diffcult as it may be, may I encourage you in this coming year to seek to grasp a better understanding
of the love of God. At its heart Christianity is about the opportunity to receive God’s love and to know this
love personally. As we start 2011 may this be the time for you to experience this love, a new beginning, to
experience the change you desire to see in your life. Christianity teaches that things can change; it can be
different because we can bring about change through the power of God’s love.

Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish you a very happy, healthy and hopeful New Year. A year
where you may give and receive love within your family, friends and your community and in the midst of
this discover for yourself that amazing love that God has for you!
