Beach Body BlaST!
www.hooleroundabout.com
summer. We need to up our protein intake, reduce our processed food and sugar intake and do short, sharp, high intensity exercise.

Time is running out to get yourself in tip top shape for this summer, so we need to act fast but more importantly act fast and act in the correct way. There is no point in panic dieting and seeing results on the scales but not actually looking or feeling any better. Any weight loss as a result of crash dieting is likely to be as a result of dehydration (we get a lot of water from what we eat) and muscle wastage. When we crash diet, our bodies go into starvation mode, our bodies have not developed that significantly since our times as cavemen, so when we vastly reduce our quantity our bodies panic. Assuming that we are still living in caves and wearing little but a loin cloth, the body begins to worry where the next food is going to come from and hence actually holds on to our fat. It is that fat which is going to help us survive, so ironically we don’t burn it and instead begin to break down muscle, but it is muscle which actually helps us burn fat so with less muscle we burn less fat. So put simply DON’T CRASH DIET!!!!

The exercise:

Do 3x15 repetitions of body weight squats. Hold the arms out in front and squat so that the bum is lower than the knees, then stand upright. Keep the pace high, but make sure you keep good form. Do 3x30 sec holds of the plank. Do one set of squats followed by one set of the plank until you have done each exercise three times. If you are not familiar with the exercises, have a look on the internet where you will find plenty of examples.

The Nutrition:

Get breakfast right, ditch the cereal and instead try two hard boiled eggs and half a avocado served on two pieces of rye bread, all washed down with a cup of green tea. Remember nothing worth having comes easy, so be prepared to try new things and open your mind and you will get results. Good luck!!

So what to do?

We need a mixture of the correct exercise and good nutrition, combine the two and you are well on the way to looking better on the beach this

Go wild about art
One of the jewels in the crown of the Cheshire summer; the national exhibition of Wildlife Art (neWA) will be showcasing almost 400 paintings and sculptures of the highest quality in a dazzling variety of styles. each July, this delightful exhibition, now firmly established at the award-winning Gordale garden centre at Burton, on the Wirral, promises an experience the whole family can enjoy for free. And, during its first three days, the exhibition will be augmented by live art demonstrations by celebrated British wildlife artists. each day of neWA’s ‘Wildlife Weekend’ will feature at least three artists showing and sharing their skills on behalf of conservation charities. On the opening day of the show, Friday 15th July, Pollyanna Pickering will be demonstrating her immensely popular painting technique alongside the Born Free Foundation’s Chris Wright. Saturday’s guests include Wirral-born artist Clare Shaughnessy and the local Wildlife Trusts, while Sunday 17th will see bird painters and woodcarvers joined by representatives of the RSPB’s neighbouring Inner Marsh Farm reserve. The exhibition continues at Gordale until Sunday, 31st July. For more information visit our Facebook wall via www.newa-uk.com

REME m 16 Tel 01244 350398 www.hooleroundabout.com Sadness as Hoole store closes  t Bang & olufsen dealer in Chester and north YOU’VE probably noticed the n ‘closing down sale’ sign on one of Wales for over 40 years. Bang & olufsen of
Peters Hi-Fi is closing its doors after 55 years in business due to the perfect storm of a bad recession and fierce competition from out of town retail giants. Before ‘Peters Electrical’ began trading, home entertainment revolved mostly around a radio in the corner of the living room. Peter Caveen - a young aerial fitter from the Wirral - opened his first shop in Charles Street, Hoole, in 1956. He began selling refrigerators, radios and black & white television sets, with a facility to repair the equipment. History Managing director Martin Caveen said: “The advent of Colour TV in 1967 was an exciting time and a milestone for the company. Peters were proud to deliver some of the first colour sets to customers in the Chester area. In 1968 Peters became the first Sony dealer to open in the north West. As technology blossomed, the business grew. In 1973 the first Video Cassette Recorders were produced, followed by the invention of the Compact Disc in the early 80’s. Peters introduced the revolutionary CD Player, by hosting a demonstration evening at the Queen Hotel, Chester.” Peters Electrical became better known as ‘Peters Hi-Fi’ due to the quality and range of their audio equipment. The business expanded and showrooms were opened in the Grosvenor Precinct Chester, Bromborough, Birkenhead, Warrington and Llandudno. They have also been the leading

Hoole’s landmark businesses.

Chester, continues to be managed by Tony Smith on Hoole Road, Chester. Martin added: “The 90s were tough with price undercutting from increasing competition, but Peters battled through the price war.” Martin concluded: “Crucially, over the last 10 years Peters has suffered. Like many independent electrical retailers, the influx of cheaper brands readily available in Supermarkets and on the Internet has made their business unsustainable. For many people, buying quality products to last or seeking specialist knowledge are no longer a priority. Lesser known brands have become more popular, undercutting superior brands such as Sony and Panasonic, in an increasingly disposable society where price is everything. This trend in consumer buying, together with the worst recession since 1930, has hit the electrical retailer hard. “Peters has watched technology evolve over nearly six decades and has always managed to keep ahead of the game, until these recent times of economic difficulty. The small corner shop has come a long way from selling transistor radios and fridges in the 1950’s, to High Definition & Home Cinema systems today. Regretfully, after over half a century, this experienced, family firm has been forced out of the market, and now has to close its doors. “on behalf of my parents (Peter & Dorothy), my sister (karen), the Directors and myself, I would like to thank all our loyal customers for their support, and also to all staff employed by Peters, for their hard work during 55 years in the business.”

Hoole school PTA strikes gold
hOOLE C of E Primary School PTa has been named as New PTa of the Year for England at the national NCPTa Gold Star awards Ceremony held in central London. The Gold Star Awards 2011 reward excellent PTA practice. The nCPTA wrote in its citation that “Hoole C of E Primary School PTA is a truly remarkable example of the difference a brand new PTA can make in a short time”. The PTA was formed last summer and decided to literally jump in at the deep end and make their inaugural event a full blown summer fair which they managed to organise in just six weeks. This was followed at Christmas by the Hoolephant Treasure Trail with the winner given the auspicious task of switching on the Hoole Christmas lights. The PTA has already built on its initial success, organising a range of events and has made £5,600 profit in its first year. With the support of the school, the PTA has also launched a forum for discussion and input to policy, on topics such as anti-bullying and child protection. The PTA is now firmly at the heart of the school. Upon accepting the award Paula norris said “This is my first experience of being a key player in a PTA and it has been amazing. I have been inspired by people who give up their time to support the school. Parents, teachers, the school’s support team and local businesses have been instrumental in the success of the PTA’s events. It takes a dedicated team to be successful and we have one here at Hoole C of E Primary School. our focus is to raise money to enrich our children’s time in primary education and we are committed to making a difference.” Paula Norris (PTa Chair) and Rosemary Blackburn (Deputy head), accompanied by pupils Beckie Barker and Lewis Roberts were presented with a trophy and cheque for £500 by Sir Pritpal Singh chair of the judging panel and headteacher at Drayton Manor high School in Ealing, , at the event held on HMS Belfast, London.

Fitness fanatic Jenny aims even higher

HooLE’s Jenny Beyer is busy training for two big fund raising events this year. In november she will take to the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn for the famous new York Marathon. But before that, Jenny will travel to Africa to climb Mount kilimanjaro in aid of the charity Countess of Chester Hospital Relative Comfort Appeal. The charity provides homes for families to stay whose relatives are terminally ill in hospital. She decided to do kilimanjaro a year ago and signed up straight away. Jenny said: “It sounded like a great adventure and as I’m always looking for one I thought it would be perfect. I am very excited now as it is getting nearer and I have just sent off for my visa! I go on the 28th July for two weeks. I have treated myself to a safari on the last day (think I may well deserve it!). “Luckily I am quite fit and do lots of running

and walking anyway so haven’t changed my programme too much.” Jenny added: “ I am quite confident that I will conquer the mountain but you never know how the altitude may affect you so Im just keeping my fingers crossed as you can’t really prepare for it!” Jenny decided to do the trek for the charity Countess of Chester Hospital Relative Comfort Appeal as a good friend of her mum’s was supported by the charity when her relative was poorly. To sponsor Jenny, visit http://www.sponsorme.org/jennyclimbskili for the kilimanjaro climb which she is doing from 28th July-8th August. In an effort to get fit Jenny took part in the Race For Life last month and even held a fund raising ladies’ night Live new Scene Youth Centre with all proceeds going to Cancer Research.

Flowers For July

GardeninG by Janet HeatH

Many of us buy plants in spring because it is the traditional time to start gardening but the plants we buy are mostly spring flowering and that can leave your borders feeling a bit let down in mid-summer so now is a good time to visit your local garden centre and buy some plants for summer colour.
Consider some of the following perennials which will flower year after year. Campanula lactiflora is a tall plant with stems of bell shaped flowers in pink, white or blue. Plant it at the back of a border in sun or light shade. The Shasta daisy, Leucanthemum x superbum Snowcap, has white daisy flowers and also likes a sunny position. I love the sword shaped leaves of Crocosmia so try taller varieties with their clusters of red, yellow or orange flowers. They like a sunny place and do best in moist soil that does not dry out. In dry years flowering can be disappointing but when happy, some tall varieties like Lucifer, will reach 1 metre in height.

Penstemons are also good for flowering from summer into autumn with tubular bell flowers in a wide range of colours. Last winter my 2 plants were killed by the prolonged cold spell but they had survived 5 years. It’s easy to take cuttings from them. Cut off new green shoots (not woody stems) about 10 cm long and remove the lower leaves. Place in a glass of water and you may find that some will produce roots after a few weeks if you change the water regularly. Pot up into compost when there are lots of roots. In July cut back flowering shrubs such as lilac, weigela and philadelphus, just after they finish flowering, if you want to reduce them in size. Cut off dead flowers from roses, penstemons, delphiniums, centaurea, nepeta and lupins and you may well get a second flush of flowers in late summer – always a bonus! Dead heading annuals in pots will keep them flowering and do remember to keep pots well watered in dry weather. Sow salad seeds of radishes, rocket, lambs lettuce and lettuce for autumn cropping.

searCH For a Hero
by tHe reV andy GloVer
FEW years ago the American Film Institute (AFI) revealed the top 50 heroes and top 50 villains of all time. Deeply principled and idealistic attorney Atticus Finch (portrayed by Gregory Peck, from to Kill a Mockingbird), was chosen as the greatest hero in 100 years of film history, while the greatest villain was revealed as the brilliant, cunning and psychotic Dr. Hannibal Lecter (portrayed by Anthony Hopkins, from The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal). Others in the top 10 heroes were Indiana Jones, James Bond, Rick Blaine, Will Kane, joining Hannibal in the top 10 villains were Norman Bates, Darth Vader, the Wicked Witch of the West. One daydream that almost all of us have had is to be a hero. The heroes of our daydreams vary; often, as we grow, so do our ideas of heroes develop Andy Glover has lived in and become more sophisticated. Tellingly, early hero-worship is often Hoole with his wife Sue called ‘looking up to someone,’ and, obviously, as children, we literally look up to those tall people, our parents, who are probably our first heroes. However, for 22 years. Andy began once we really begin to consider heroes, one particular difficulty seems to arise at Hoole Baptist Church, again and again. That problem is identifying a hero. So how do we determine on Westminster Road, who a hero is, or how someone comes to be a hero. as Youth Pastor, before Some people say that heroes are becoming the Pastor and born and not made, that heroism now Team Leader. is a matter of fate, but if heroes are made, who - or what - “makes” them? Heroes in the movies can be called upon to illustrate both sides of this question. In one sense, heroes seemed to be determined, that is ‘made,’ by a common understanding. Most people simply agreed that heroes were literally ‘extraordinary,’ and performed astonishing deeds, far beyond the capabilities of the average person. One quality that quickly arises in a discussion of heroes is courage. At the moment this is clearly highlighted in the campaign “Help our Heroes” As their website states; “It’s about the ‘blokes’, our men and women of the Armed Forces. It’s about Derek, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it’s about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking through a straw. It’s about Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could say goodbye to his wife. It’s about Ben, it’s about Steven and Andy and Mark, it’s about them all. They are just blokes but they are our blokes; they are our heroes. We want to help our heroes.” In the last 10/15 years we find a maker of heroes that ignores, engulf s or surpasses all previous creators of heroes. That influence is, simply, ‘the media.’ It is true that without the media, which may discover and certainly announce people of valour and honour to us, we might never get to know of the heroes amongst us. More sinisterly though, the media can be superficial and capricious. The past itself changes under our eyes; people who are “nobodies” one moment are apparently “heroes” the next and then these same people are gone again! Are the media identifying something else for us - not the hero but the celebrity - someone who has attained the “fifteen minutes of fame” that Andy Warhol claimed we were all due? If heroes are made and not born, who or what makes them? But if they are born and not made, how shall we know them? It was Heather Small who sang, “Search for the Hero inside yourself, until you find the key to your life” Is it possible to find that hero by just looking inside, I wonder if in fact if this is just a part of the truth, for me my hero is someone marked by sacrifice, he once said, “no greater love has this than a person lay down his life for his friend, and then this is what he did”; This is person is Jesus! Although he a someone I look to imitate and follow, he is also someone who now lives in me and enables me to live a life that is marked with character, this I hope enables me to make the right choice, to do the right thing when I am called upon to do it at the right time, then maybe just maybe I can be a hero to some else!
