Let’s start with the good news, you can do it and
the bad news, well there are no miracles to get-
ting there. No special little pills or powders and
certainly no magic wand – despite what you might
see on various shopping channels and in the small
ads at the back of glossy magazines. Unfortunately
these are all scams full of big promises without any
substance and I should know I’ve tried them! spe-
cial pills, I’ve tried them. electric belts that promise
a six pack, yes tried them too and they don’t work!
so how do we get that body that we are looking for
without all of those shortcuts? Like any venture,
we need a plan. think about anything you do,
unless you are lucky you are less likely to get the
most from things without some prior thought or
planning. Instead you are more likely to stumble
around and eventually give up until next year, but
every year it gets a bit harder!!
So lets get to it, the frst thing is to decide what you
specifcally want to achieve, that means getting rid
of the vague statements such as “lose weight” or
“get ft”. How much weight? How ft, run a mara-
thon or be able to climb the stairs a little easier? Af-
ter the plan comes a timescale, by when? these are
the two most important issues, but we also must
be realistic. sometimes though being too realistic
actually puts a ceiling on what we can actually
achieve, for example losing a stone in two months
may well not be enough of a challenge although for
others this may be very optimistic.
It is important to write down your plan, research
tell us if we do this we are much more likely to
achieve our goals regardless of how modest or
visionary. so sit down, weigh yourself, and get a
tape measure and measure around your arm, chest,
waist and hips. Write it all down and get to it. this
time next year you may sit back and wish you had
done something now, so if not now when?
Summer is coming and you
want to look your best?

Electrical store to close
PETERS Electrical Store, on Charles Street, is to close after 55 years. It seems like
the recession and the availability of consumer goods from the supermarkets have
taken their toll on this Hoole business. Manager Martin Caveen said: “Regretfully, we
have been forced out of the market and now have to close.”

HOOLE RANGERS FC
HOOLE Rangers 1st team retained their
premier league status following a fne end
to the season. With four games to go, we
were languishing second from bottom, a
point adrift of Crossways and several points
behind the team above them.
In the frst of those games against Nomads
II, we had possibly the strongest team for
some time, but despite hitting the woodwork
fve times in the frst half, we went behind
and lost our way by chasing the game,
fnally going down 4-1.
However, in the following two midweek
fxtures, we showed some real character
and determination winning both games.
We narrowly defeated Sutton way Villa by
2-1, and then had a great win 6-4 against
the form team in the end of season run-in,
Cross Foxes, having been 3-2 down with 15
minutes to go.
That meant we were safe, and in our fnal
game against 3rd placed Highfeld we were
able to relax, enjoy the game and try out a
few of the new young players.
Hoole Rangers reserves also retained their
position in Division Two as reported last
month, and although this season has been
a fght against relegation for both teams,
we know we have a better squad of players
than when we started this campaign. With
a few more quality players promising to
join us, we are looking forward with some
excitement towards next season.
We plan to restart training on Tuesdays
from 6-8pm at New Scene in the next couple
of weeks and would welcome any new
players who want to come down and train,
with a view to signing next season.
Any new players can contact us as follows

Late run ensures survival
Dog fouling campaign comes to Hoole
A COUNCIL Dog fouling road show comes to Hoole Tuesday 14th June.
The unit will be located on the football felds behind The New Scene Centre on Lime
Wood Close. Access can be made from the Millennium Greenway. The Community Safety
Wardens and the dog wardens will be attending and it will be from 8am - 12noon.
Pop in to have a word with the council offcers - about issues concerning you. It is hoped
some of the councillors will be able to attend too.
Many people would much appreciate the larger bins (for litter and dog dirt) on the
Millennium Greenway, as requested by the Friends committee, to be provided from council
member’s funds agreed by Cllr Bob Thompson some time ago. Also on the agenda is the
long awaited litter/dog foul bin, for what is now fondly called Fox Junction, the exit lane
passing Park Farm.
Many dog owners are responsible and collect and dispose of their dog’s mess in bins, but
there are still owners who do not, leaving streets, parks and countryside littered with dog
faeces.

Mum & Dads!
They have crazy styling chairs (Barbie Jeep,
yellow Hummer & even a F22 Combat Jet) for
the little ones. With flat screens showing their
favourite cartoons or perhaps they’d prefer to
keep themselves occupied playing a game on
an Xbox 360.
Styling stations for older children are on the
other side of the salon. These also include flat
screens where they can select a DVD or check
out a game on the Xbox.
Now available, for that special occasion is
Charlie’s Little Princess VIP Package. Which
includes: hair styled/hair up with accessories,
nails painted, a little glittery make-up, balloon
and photo. Great for a special individual or a
small group of friends. Due to popular demand
Charlie’s is now open late, till 7pm every Friday.
Party time
Above the salon, are Charlie’s exclusive pamper
& party rooms, it’s the only venue like it in town!
Charlie’s Kids Cuts offer a variety of exclusive
party packages for all ages of children from 4 –
14-year-olds. Such as Princess & Pirate parties
for the younger ones to Glamour & Glitz or Pop
Star parties, for the older ones.
All parties are exclusive
and include hair-ups,
mini-cures, make-up
(face painting & dress-
ing up for the younger
ones) tattoos & hair dye
(wash off, don’t worry)
for the boys.
As well as party games, disco, karaoke, party
food & drinks at Charlie’s cocktail bar. All par-
ties have dedicated party hosts & stylists to
entertain the children and give them their make-
over’s and pampering.

ing school, team or group celebration, Charlie’s
can help make it one to remember and one
you’ll want to repeat again and again.
Kids’ cuts have never been so much fun!
Hoole Roundabout June 2011 17
Nothing is so simple it cannot be misunderstood – Albert Einstein
Some thoughts about Hoole by Andy Medcraft
Baby I was
born this way
THE thunder that added drama to the end of
the sunny spell has kept me from my backyard.
My job has stepped up a gear and now, when I
really need a glass of rioja and the charm of my
terracotta oasis, I am forced to just stare at it out
of the window while nurturing a coffee, warming
my hands and trying not to steam up the glass
with my breath.
For Easter, my Mum, with all her good
intentions to preserve my health and subtly
reduce my waistline, presented me with a
planter. It was absolutely perfect and to say
that I was ‘over the moon’ is an understatement.
She had planted various succulents and
arranged some slate with the precision of
a micro surgeon. It looks truly stunning and
with the added muscle defnition I gained
from lugging it back to Hoole from Essex,
she managed to tick all of the boxes – a low
fat alternative to a chocolate egg that will
encourage my green fngeredness and provide
me not only with a focal point but a weight
training workout that even the gladiators at
Chester Boxers would envy.
Chez Andy
But with the wet weather comes the chance
to focus on the interior of Chez’ Andy. The
bedroom got a good clear out as did the
dining room but the kitchen really sparked the
imagination. The tupperware, now stacked liked
Russian dolls, tripped the boredom of what
some call “feng shui” but I call “chores,” and
I found myself sorting through recipe books
looking for some sunshine hidden within the
pages of Delia, Nigella or Gorden.
So, since the frst rain fell following the bank
holiday I’ve been throwing another log on the
fre, nudging up the thermostat and standing
over the electric hob to get that sun kissed
sensation. I’ve ditched those recipe books and
opted for buying fresh produce from deli-vert,
skipping through the puddles of Faulkner Street
with my mind in the Mediterranean. I’m shutting
out the wet and imagining the beach beyond
the curtains. I’ve even started to eat Salads. I
never eat salads. Not even in the summer but
now that the self hypnosis has kicked in, I’m in
and out of Mr Fruity and coating everything in
a balsamic dressing. The One Stop suddenly
offered cut priced Ogio and while I mourned the
loss of the Jolly Chef, pizza.com has brought
back traditional readymade Italian tastes to
take away and Hoole becomes my Mecca once
more.
The dress code isn’t quite as ftting due to the
chill factor but although I am coming home and
climbing into my pyjamas I am slipping on a pair
of fip fops to create the summer sound effect
as I shuffe around the house humming Puccini
rather than Gaga.
I know it’s not very patriotic of me to be
avoiding my usual diet of spotted dick, bacon
sandwiches, Yorkshire puddings and fsh and
chips but I blame the Royal Wedding and the
British weather! I’m not anti royal, I’m just anti
wet weekends and cheap looking porcelain
with crude prints of the happy couple taking up
too much shelf space in both the Coops so I
have let my imagination run wild to escape the
damp and dull. Tonight I dined on Red Pesto
Ravioli, toasted fresh bread topped with wild
mushrooms sautéed with garlic and thyme and
a Caesar salad with a splash of the balsamic.
Oh, and a Vienetta! Well, you can take the boy
out of Essex but you can’t take Essex out of the
boy – and in the words of my Puccini: ‘baby I
was born this way’

magical life
Lifestyle column with Hoole’s transformational coach
and money magnet Marite-Claire Carlyle
ARE you feeling overwhelmed? Do you feel that you have so much to do that you’ll never get it
all done? Is your “to do” list as long as your arm? If so, you are not alone! Managing the balance
of work and family life, as well as making sure that you have some time to yourself, can feel like
a daily struggle for most of us. Add to that the pressure of an overfowing in-box and the constant
chatter of social media, and its not surprising that many of us are feeling overwhelmed. When
you feel overwhelmed, you lose touch with your true desires and inspiration, and it all starts
feels like too much hard work. If not checked, it can even lead to illness and depression as you
become a victim to your circumstances.
Fortunately there is another way. You are not the victim. You are the creator of your life. You
can choose how to feel about your life in any given moment …its just that most of us don’t! Last
Thursday I ended up running for my train to London, again, having tried my hardest to meet all
the deadlines in my day. I collapsed on to my seat, exhausted, and I practically said out loud “
That’s it! I give up trying to be perfect. Ill just BE perfect.” In that very moment, my shoulders
relaxed and I felt a smile brighten my face. It turned into a giggle as a wonderful feeling of joy
swept through my body. In that moment I had transformed how I felt about myself and my life. I
changed my mind about my life and my life changed.
Quantum physics shows us that it is the observer that determines what exists. You are the
observer of your life and so you can create it as you wish, in any given moment. I went on to
have a fun creative weekend in London with friends..and during the weekend everything got done
that needed doing. I also learnt a new way of dealing with each day that Ill share with you now.
Its called a mind map. Write the date in the centre
of a page and circle it. Then write down everything
thats in your mind to do that day, circling each item
and linking them to each other. You ll end up with
everything on that piece of paper in a way that
your mind can take in easily. The most important
thing is that you are now CLEAR to create a
magical day where you TRUST that everything will
get done, easily and without drama. Choose now
to live a magical life!

ROADWORKS on Hoole Bridge could spell more trouble for traders in the area.
Cheshire West and Chester Council will commission work to start shortly to repair an

But this will inevitably lead to closures and the ensuing problems with traffc. Traders
say that ‘Hoole Bridge Closed’ signs have a massive impact on them, putting potential

Roses in June
GaRdeninG by Janet HeatH
June brings out some of the best
fowering shrubs including lovely
roses.
If you are seeking scented roses then maybe
select from David Austin English roses
that bred for scent and repeat fowering.
Remember that roses do best if given
rich growing conditions so feed with rose
fertilizer, mulch with manure and if greenfy
become a problem, spray the greenfy with
water mixed with washing up liquid.
Shrubs such as Deutzia Rosealind or Mont
Rose have tiny pink fowers and are not too
fussy growing in sun or light shade. For
delicious scent Philadelphus Beauclerk or
Belle Etoile with white fowers is perfect
sited near a sitting area so you can enjoy the
fragrance. Cistus or rock roses are evergreen
low growing shrubs with white or pink large
fowers with delicate tissue paper petals that
enjoy a dry sunny place.
Some sun loving perennials will fower for
weeks from June onwards. Try pale blue
fowered Nepeta (Catmint) and lemon yellow
Anthemis tinctoria E C Buxton as both will
fower for up to three months in summer
especially if you remove dead fowers. If
you have a dry sunny position and want
ground cover and fowers try Erigeron with
pink or mauve daisy fowers. The plant will
root where the stems touch the soil and can
tumble gently over a wall. If it gets too large
simply cut back with shears.
In June the apple trees carry out the June
drop. This is when they naturally drop some
of the small apples just as they start to grow.
In June thin the fruit on each cluster to one
or two so you have larger apples in autumn.
Put straw around strawberries as they
mature. If it is wet it will keep the fruit off the
ground and help to avoid pests and rotting
fruit.
Vegetables such as runner beans, courgettes
and pumpkins can still be planted out if
pot grown indoors, provided they are well
grown. First early potatoes should be ready to
harvested in June so when the potato plants
fower, dig down and see if there are potatoes
ready to eat.

t
His month we shall celebrate Father’s Day - I
must admit I sometimes think the role model of a
good Father in society is becoming an endangered
species!
All too often we hear stories of Fathers deserting their families,
children growing up with no experience of Fatherhood or families
where the Father is emotional disengaged from his children or
too busy with work to spend time with them. Over the past few
years, the church I lead has been trying to address some of
these issues.
Let me ask you dads of young families out there, how would you
prefer to spend a Saturday morning?
1. creating another DIY disaster;
2. trudging around the shops; or
3. having fun with your toddler while eating bacon butties and
chatting with other dads?
If your choice would be option 3, then Who Let The Dads Out?
is for you!
Who Let the Dads Out? is a toddler group for fathers (and other male carers) and their
pre-school children. It aims to:
- be a fun way for dads and children to spend time together, and
- be a place where fathers can meet other men in the same position.
The group meets on the frst Saturday of each month in Hoole Lighthouse Centre, from
10am to midday). In addition to a wide range of toddlers’ toys and a craft table, there are the
famous bacon sandwiches, good coffee and good company. It is regularly attended by 30-45
dads and up to 60 kids.
We also have SODA (School’s Out, Dad’s About) Club - a special club for dads, male
carers and their infant school aged children. The SODA Club takes place on the frst Monday
each month (from 5.30pm to 7pm) and is a fantastic opportunity for you to play with your
children, chat to other dads, scan the newspaper reports on the weekend’s sport and enjoy
a cuppa with a slice or two of buttered toast. There are a wide selection of toys and games
and there is a craft activity to do at each session. All are designed for dads and children to
take part in together. It’s a perfect way to start the week and a great opportunity to make
memories with your kids! Some Other groups for dads in Hoole include:
Daddy Cool - a 5 week parenting programme specifcally for dads,
Soul Man - an opportunity for dads to discuss their values and beliefs and what they pass
onto their children,
Hoole Dads football team - a kick-about for men on Wednesdays at 8.45pm,
Its no good on just one day of the year to think about Fathers, being a good Father is a
journey that lasts a lifetime and if we’re honest requires help and advice from others!
