The traders have again got together to fund the lights which makes Hoole extra special at Christmas time. The switch-on itself is always worth going to, for the chance to see Santa and to get into the Christmas spirit. Good luck to Hoole’s Jenny Beyer who jets out to America this month to take part in the New York City Marathon. Jenny has already scaled Mt Kilimanjaro this year and is determined to put in one last big effort. Cleaning up the community in Hoole: local residents, Cllr Bob Thompson and Police Community Officer Keith Bartlett.

Tatty spots get a makeover
YOUNG people from Hoole took time out to clean up abandoned spaces in their community. Chester and District Housing Trust (CDHT) residents tackled dog fouling, empty bottles and broken glass to spruce up The Narrows and Walker Street play area. They were joined by two Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) community safety wardens, Police Community Officer Keith Bartlett and Hoole councillor and CDHT chair Bob Thompson. Volunteers also repainted the youth shelter in Limewood Fields - which had been covered in offensive graffiti - using paint donated by the Council’s StreetScene department. The makeovers were part of CDHT’S Our Say Our Way project, funded by the Big Lottery, which aims to give young people a voice. CDHT youth worker Rebecca Bowker said: “The group carried out some really positive work and after we had finished the park in Hoole was completely free from rubbish. The shelter also looks in much better condition now thanks to everyone’s hard work.” Cllr Thompson added: “This is a great example of how partnership working can really bring about results within an area.” Anyone wishing to get involved with Our Say Our Way should call Rebecca Bowker on 01244 305451 or email r.bowker@cdht. org

Big Apple awaits for intrepid runner Jenny
Jenny (left) with friends after the London Marathon

Jenny is running the marathon on 6th November in aid of the RSPCA – and assures us that this is her last big challenge of the year! Said Jenny: “I can’t quite believe how quickly it has come around as I have been so busy with other things! I am sure the crowds support will push me round the course.

FRESH from scaling Mount Kilimanjaro, Hoole’s intrepid fitness fanatic Jenny Beyer is off to America next month to take part in the New York City Marathon.

“I’m not really that competitive so I will be quite happy to just complete the course! However if I do beat my London Marathon time of 4 hours 40 secs I would be rather happy and would treat myself to an extra large hot chocolate at Starbucks! “I think I am most excited about going to New York as there are Starbucks cafes on every corner! I think I may have to pop in if there’s one on the course!” If you wish to sponsor Jenny, you can do so by going to the Just Giving website http:// www.justgiving.com/Jenny-Beyer1 and making a donation.

Jenny has started two fitness classes at Live, Newscene Youth Centre, on Newton Lane, on Fridays 2-3pm- Zumba and 3-4pm - High energy aerobics! £3 per person. Jenny can be contacted on 07725 235724

Margaret Millichamp, the first resident at Chester & District Housing Trust’s (CDHT) Hoole House development, launched the £3.2 million scheme at the official opening ceremony. The 36 new homes in Hoole House, which have been developed by CDHT, replaced 22 bed-sits at Willow Crescent, Hoole. The new scheme comprises 24 high quality apartments to rent with another 12 on a shared ownership basis. The development for over 55’s has increased the number of affordable homes in the community and was completed by contractors G&J Seddon. CDHT Chief Executive John Denny said:“We’re really proud of Hoole House, which is one of four schemes opening this year and means we have invested £13 million in over 55’s accommodation this year. ”

Sainsbury’s set to move in IT looks like the former Peters Hi-Fi premises on the corner of Faulkner Street and Charles Street will become a Sainsbury’s Local store. The retail giant has submitted plans to Cheshire West and Chester Council for a small supermarket on the site. Mobile phone mast protest PLANS for a mobile phone mast at Brookside Terrace have been put forward. One resident living nearby told us that she would be objecting to the scheme because she feared the health implications of a mast so close to houses. The proposed mast will support six antennas including an adjacent cabinet. The council’s planners are due to make a decision within a matter of months so objections need to be in early. Local councillor Bob Thompson will be calling the application in, supported by fellow councillors from Hoole and Newton. Christmas concert THERE will be a Christmas Concert by The City of Chester Male Voice Choir with special guests Oaklands School Choir (Winsford) on Saturday 4th December at All Saints Church, Hoole, at 7.30pm Tickets obtainable from 01244 349931.

Some thoughts about Hoole by Andy Medcraft

“Paris & London baby you Can keeP...”
I’ve come to realise that I will always be a source of disappointment to my Mother. No matter what I do, she will always be ‘pushing’ me to achieve. Sometimes she does this without even needing to speak. A single look can convey a thousand words. And wow, has she perfected those looks. Having spent the week steam cleaning the carpets, Febrezing the life out of every soft furnishing and polishing the glass in every picture frame to an within a millimetre of nothingness, she drove into Hoole for an extended weekend and promptly told me that the lounge smelt of bacon! With my other half shedding stones at Slimming World like they are going out of fashion, the last thing my kitchen has seen other than wholemeal pasta and quark, is bacon. Bemused, my father and I began sniffing the air. Nope. Not a whiff. We managed to pass it off as the apple green candle that had burned unevenly and left a sooty stain against it’s glass container. My father wasn’t convinced but it was soon forgotten about as I introduced them to the delights of Wok and Go and dragged them around the city walls to walk up an appetite prior to its delivery. “That glass could do with a clean” she said, settling herself back into the sofa that I could see she was regretting donating to us. She stroked the arm of it lovingly as she fantasised how it would look back home in her conservatory. Could do better My mother is one of those people who wants you to be your best. She doesn’t suffer fools and she certainly doesn’t allow you to rest on your laurels. Growing up I would proudly show her the pictures I had painted that my teachers was claiming were masterpieces. She would look at them, smile and tell me they were good – but she knew I could do better. And it was those reactions that drove me. I followed art through college and university and even went on to teach it at secondary school. She was my driving force. She was my inspiration. And although to all outside, I was a rolling stone gathering no moss, moving from essex to Surrey to London to Berkshire before finally leaping up here to Cheshire, I have always been a mummy’s boy at heart. I booked the Friday off work and we wondered along the canal into Chester. She loves the city and I’m quite proud to call it my home. But what she loves more is Hoole. Although I may not be earning the wage my Brother is earning in London and taking the holidays or publishing the book (half finished and collecting dust) or setting up my own creative business or losing the weight or tucking in my shirt or keeping the beard trimmed more, there is that little spark in her eye that her oldest has done her proud. It may smell of bacon (in her eyes – and I will be contacting customer services at Febreze) but the house is homely, the street quite and those neighbours we actually see are friendly. And by moving here and inviting her to come and stay she gets to be a part of it. Community There is a vibe that I have not found anywhere else. There is a real community spirit. While we lapped up the atmosphere at the Faulkner, taking full advantage of the ‘two for one’ Pizza’s and soaking up the house red, I pointed out Sentiments by Sonia – the quirky card shop across the road that will stock my Christmas Cards later this year. She was bursting with pride with that one – major points to me. And so, when we had finished and paid the bill we wandered into Charles Street to peer in at the cards and gifts. Her eye was then drawn to neighbouring shops and finally Baked. Well, thank you Baked, from the bottom of my heart. Coupled with Deli Vert and the Faulkner my Mother is now placing Hoole on that peddle stool alongside New York, Paris and London. I think I’ve cracked it. As long as I stay living 300 miles away in the place that ‘...brings a touch of Notting Hill to Chester’ I will have stepped up to the mark. And she, the educated woman who is elegant, honest, well versed and talks to Dermot O’Leary via the television (Sigmund Freud, analyse that) will always be my inspiration. And Hoole will always be my muse and my home. Oh, and my Dad will always be the man who moves his head instead of the toothbrush! Genius. Where would I be without such factors in my life.

HOOLE RANGERS FC
Rangers prove they have what it takes to survive - and thrive in the top division
Hoole Rangers 1st team have played mainly cup games in the past month, winning by 5-1 against Barcode from Division 2, winning 3-1 against Division 1 side Shaftsbury, but losing 1-3 against a very strong Christleton side from West Cheshire division 1, where we put up a great fight and showed us we have the players to compete at this level. In our only league game during this period, we came out as 3-2 winners over Saughall Thursday, despite having our goalkeeper sent off early in the second half where the resultant penalty made the scores level at 2-2. A determined effort by 10 men was rewarded with a late winner. So, the season thus far shows great promise, we are currently mid table in the premier league, but if we win our 4 games in hand, we could go within 3 points of the current leaders. Reserves Following their promotion to Division 1 this year, the reserves are finding life a little tough. This is partly due to the higher standard of opposition, but they have also paid the price for an unusual number of players being unavailable across both teams, which has meant they have had to send out weakened teams each week. This has resulted in them losing all 4 league games in the last month, though the last 2 games showed real signs of improvement, only losing out to a narrow margin. Despite this temporary setback, their early season league win, when they were able to turn out a stronger side means they are still not at the bottom of their league. We are confident we have a squad of players good enough for this level, and expect to turn things around once they all become available. Training has been particularly successful this year. Adam Bebington has taken over this role and has implemented many new ideas, including having guest trainers. To-date, Adam has brought down Paul Hughes, ex Christleton manager, Gary Powell and George Horan, Chester FC 1st team coach and captain, plus Chris Neal, Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper, who took Hoole Rangers keepers for a focused session. The players have really responded to the new training with numbers well up from last season, and everyone enjoying the variation this brings. Another new initiative we have recently started is to open up a Saturday afternoon family room in the New Scene building, where the player’s partners, wives, and children can come and socialise while the games are taking place. The room overlooks the pitch so everyone can watch the game while keeping warm and dry. Refreshments are available and games are provided for the children. We are only in the second week of a trial period but the attendance has been great and the feedback from families very positive. We have the option to make this a permanent offering if it continues to be successful. We are consulting with New Scene and the Cheshire West and Chester council to arrange to have floodlights put up at New Scene to allow us to train throughout the winter on the grassed area. In the short term we have changed the training from Tuesday to Wednesday nights, when we train with another local team under floodlights at Christleton. We are always looking for good new players so if you are interested in playing for a great club, with strong ambitions, please contact us and we will advise when and where the training will be. RememBeR, RememBeR
By tHe ReV AnDy GlOVeR
Recently I attended a 50th Birthday celebration with a very close friend of ours, Sue, my wife, had known Pam since they were 11, they meet at secondary school! that means they had 39 years of memories, including some very happy ones and some equally as sad. We were looking through some photo albums, which recorded some of these events through some specific photographs at christenings, weddings, holidays and Christmas times. We had great fun looking through old photos and it certainly stirred up lots of memories as we remembered the stories that lay behind each of the photos. To be able to remember is wonderful, the brain’s ability to store, retain, and recall information creates memories. As we get older memories become more important to Andy Glover has lived in us, remembering our childhood, remembering loved ones who have passed Hoole with his wife Sue away and remembering those special occassions we celebrate within life. for 22 years. Andy began Of course not all memories are happy ones, one of the amazing dimensions at Hoole Baptist Church, of remembering is that emotions are attched to our memories, so when we on Westminster Road, remember someone or some event we encounter afreash the emotions that as Youth Pastor, before belong to that memory. becoming the Pastor and November is a month for remembering and as a nation we remember two now Team Leader. specific things: Remember remember the fifth of November Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder, treason Should ever be forgot... Words of “Remember Remember” refer to Guy Fawkes with origins in 17th century English history. On the 5th November 1605 Guy Fawkes was caught in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament with several dozen barrels of gunpowder. Guy Fawkes was subsequently tried as a traitor with his co-conspirators for plotting against the government. Fawkes was sentenced to death and the form of the execution was one of the most horrendous ever practised (hung, drawn and quartered) which reflected the serious nature of the crime of treason. The following year in 1606 it became an annual custom for the King and Parliament to commission a sermon to commemorate the event. This practice, together with the nursery rhyme, ensured that this crime would never be forgotten! Then on Remembrance Day, the 11th November, this day chosen because it was the day that World War One ended in 1918, when the armistice was signed in Northern France, at 5am. Six hours later, the fighting stopped, and to commemorate this there is a two-minute silence in the UK at 11am. This year is a very special occasion as it will be 11am on the 11/11/11. A poem called ‘For the Fallen’ is often read aloud on the occasion; the most famous stanza of which reads: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. I don’t know if you’ve ever given any thought to the fact that God remembers. God is omniscient, by definition. That means He knows everything there is to know. He has perfect memory of each and every thing including the wrong that we’ve committed. When we remember some memories we will have feelings of regret and remorse, sometimes we would wish we could change something that was said or done by us or to us. By experiencing God’s forgiveness we can ‘move on’ from these feelings. God does not mysteriously and suddenly “forget” all the bad and wrong things but because of the death of Jesus he chooses to remember them no more – this is the hope of the Christian faith, forgiveness from God via the experience of knowing Jesus enables us to forgive and be forgiven so that we can be free from the effects of some of the bad memories that we so easily remember and become entrapped within the emotions of these memories.
