Faulkner Street and Charles Street will be closed off from about 4.30-7pm for the
showpiece event.
This year the organisers hope to have some new lights as a result of their fund raising
during the year, which culminated in a special ball at the end of October.
There will be two Santa’s grottos, at the Faulkner and the Oak, as well as lots of activities
for children and the local radio station will be broadcasting live from the event.
Donations for the lights are always welcome. Hoole is perhaps the only area of Chester
to have its own lights and they certainly help to bring in trade to the area over the festive
season.

Hoole Roundabout November 2010 13
The October sun fooled me into thinking
it was warmer. Summer already seemed so
long ago and the backyard was overgrown,
taking a full afternoon to clear the dead
mess that was once a beautiful, well
manicured splash of colour.
When my mother called I told her I’d been
gardening. As a fully fedged and over qualifed
green fngered foral goddess, she was obviously
impressed. I didn’t go into the details that the
baskets were empty and the Ivy had completely
swallowed up the back gate. I didn’t want to
tarnish the image she now had of our backyard and
it was with this immaculate misrepresentation in
mind, I decided I’d done enough for one day.
I grabbed the Hoole Roundabout and plonked
myself on the bench that I had rescued from the
deadly clutches of the Trifd invasion and with
a mug of tea in hand the sun tried her hardest
to warm me. It was only when I stopped that
I realised the weather had fooled everybody
into pulling a tool out of a shed. Te sweeping,
trimming and pruning played like an anthem. I
was amazed at how relaxing it was to sit and listen
to other people work. Tis backyard soundtrack,
coupled with the glare from the Autumn sun, soon
made my eyes heavy and I was on the verge of
dropping of when suddenly I was hit with C word!
It came out of nowhere and without warning. I’m
not one to shy away from the C word and as an
illustrator, I’m well aware that now is the time
that catalogues, trade journals and most industries
promote their winter forecasts but sat there, in the
tranquillity of an afternoon in October, Christmas
was the last thing on my mind.
Te conversation that unfolded was shocking.
Next-door-but-one had completed their Christmas
shopping and clearly stated that if anybody else
put forward gift ideas they would have to go on
the list for next year! Are these people mad? I bit
the inside of my mouth to stop myself from calling
out to them. Maybe the North South divide is
a Christmas issue. All bought and wrapped and
under the tree by Halloween where as those south
of the M25 are still planning who they’re gonna
cop of with at the ofce Christmas party.
I was momentarily saved from over analysis when
next door cranked up a stereo and Dee 106.3 began
discussing the X Factor. Ten it hit me again.
“Christmas No. 1 from X Factor hopefuls...” I’d
not even heard a frework and already the C word
seemed to be exploding all over Chester!
Desperate not to be drawn into the festivities I
headed inside for the sanctuary of the house, away
from stray conversations and away from Christmas.
Te refrigerator gave me my frst escape: fresh
olives from the Deli at the top if Faulkner Street.
A little taste of Tuscany right here in Hoole. Te
radiator clicking to my left and the misleading blue
sky above the chimney tops became my Fellini
backdrop. In slow motion and with a soft focus
close up, I became Sophia Loren’s leading man,
thumbing through the calendar with long drawn
out pauses for dramatic efect, making sure I was
free to see the Hoole Christmas lights switched on.
Well, if you can’t beat them, join them.

IFe’S little luxuries don’t come around
too often. We all like to be spoilt and
pampered once in a while, so when we were
invited to try out a spa day at Rowton hall
Spa we jumped at the chance.
Spa days were once the preserve of the rich and often
meant travelling half way across the country for a
luxurious treatment.
Now, you can get all this and more so much
closer to home - Rowton Hall Spa is just outside
Chester - and it is an experience I would defnitely
recommend.
I arrived at the health club and spa with my
colleague Lynne in the morning.
We had the whole morning to use the fully equipped
gym, swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi and steam
room.
Lunch was at 12 and after tucking into our delicious
salmon and haddock fshcake dish it was time for our
gorgeous treatments during the afternoon.
I opted for the Full body exfoliation, Rose facial, De-
stress back massage and Foot massage to fnish.
Te beautifully decorated room together with the
mood lighting, water feature and tranquil music was
heavenly.
Our beauty therapists Gemma and Andrea took us
through to our treatment rooms where they talked us
through our treatments and after getting comfortable
on the beds began with my exfoliation. Te Spa
uses Aromatherapy Associates products all of which
smelt divine. Te treatment left my skin with a lovely
tingling sensation.
My next treatment – Neck, back and shoulder
massage was one of the best I have ever had. Te
correct pressure together with rhythmic movements
and the beautifully scented oils were wonderful.
My rose facial consisted of Cleanser, Toner,
Exfoliator, Massage oil, Face mask, and Moisturise.
Te lightly scented products left my skin feeling
unbelievably soft and hydrated. On refection I
would say this was my favourite treatment of the day.
I would certainly recommend selecting this on your
spa day.
My fnal treatment was the foot massage, not
something I would normally choose in a salon. But
I would defnitely have this again because it not only
left my feet feeling soft but it was perfect to ease
tension after my am session in the gym.
To fnish of this blissful day, we were back in our
robes and put into the relaxation room, where fruit
tea, fresh fruit and water were waiting for us.
Overall the whole day was truly delightful. Te Spa
manager Stephanie Mckay has planned the pick ‘n’
mix spa days perfectly.
So if you’re looking for a special anniversary, birthday
or Christmas present or just something to enjoy
on any day of the week this would certainly be
something to think about. Te day is excellent value
for money and is an experience we will never forget!

month.
Karen Lancaster won a £5,000 prize

RESIDENTS, local ward
councillors, offcers and
community safety wardens
have turned out in force to
make Hoole parks cleaner
and more enjoyable for
local people to use.
Local people wanted to
do something positive
to improve well-used
community parks and give
something back to their
neighbourhood - and frst on
the agenda was a community
litter-pick day at the Narrows
Park and the nearby
community park on Walker Street.
They highlighted the issue to Cheshire West and Chester Council through the local
community forum for the Upton, Hoole and Newton area, which meets regularly to listen to
residents’ concerns and priorities.
Councillor Adrian Walmsley, Chair of the Upton, Hoole and Newton Community Forum,
said: “We were delighted at the high turnout of residents – young and old – who came along
to improve their local parks.
“It demonstrates how much people care about their environment and the sense of
community which is alive and well in the Hoole area.
“This really is ‘Big Society’ in action locally. The need for these improvement works in both
the Narrows and Walker Street Community Parks was bought to the attention of the local
community forum and we were pleased to be able to enable local people to make a real
difference in their area.”
Local business L. Lewis of Hoole also supported the litter-pick event by donating much-
appreciated free ice creams to all volunteers who took part.
Cheshire West and Chester Council has already responded to residents’ concerns by
carrying out improvements to the Narrows including repainting railings, repairing cobbles,
installing a new litter bin and clearing footpaths.
Further works are planned and the residents involved are planning to meet again to look at
further ways they can continue to be involved in the up-keep of both parks.
If you are interested in taking part in this meeting, want to know more about the Community
Forum, or have an issue to raise about your area then please contact Julia Wilson,
Community Engagement Offcer, at Cheshire West and Chester on 01244 976 765.

I have made good judgements in the past. I have made good judgements in the future - Dan Quayle
RANGERS have enjoyed mixed
fortunes on and off the pitch this
season
the football front, Hoole Rangers FC 1st
team have had a mixed start to the season.
As usual, player unavailability at the start of
the season has affected our team selections
and our league results are; played 9 won 2
lost 6, drawn 1.
This places us in the lower middle part of
the league, but having played some of the
better teams, we are now confdent that with
a full squad we are capable of beating any
team in our league. We also remain in four
of the fve cup competitions going forward.
The reserves have not fared as well, and
have lost all of their games to-date, six in
the league and two cup matches, which
means they have a lot of catching up to do.
As we move forward, if have full player
availability, we are confdent we will improve
results for both teams. We continue to train
at New Scene on Tuesdays, 6pm to 8pm,
and new players are welcome to come
down.
On the non football side, the changing
room upgrades at our home ground, New
Scene youth centre at Limewood Fields are
now complete. The work was funded mainly
by Cheshire West and Chester council
along with a donation from the Chester and
District Saturday league. This has been one
of several projects currently being worked
by the council and the football league,
which will make necessary improvements to
council pitches and changing rooms used
for football in the city.
In the next couple of weeks, we hope to get
sponsors to procure mobile foodlighting of
the all weather areas so we can continue to
train throughout the winter. We also have

LIVING A GOOD LIFE
Andy Glover has lived in
Hoole with his wife Sue
for 20 years. Andy began
at Hoole Baptist Church,
on Westminster Road,
as Youth Pastor, before
becoming the Pastor and
now Team Leader.
I READ recently about a missionary who was living in Africa. He was
disturbed over something he was seeing. The women, in the village he
was in, walked around with heavy loads of wood piled on their backs.
Their husbands, on the other hand, carried nothing more than a walking
stick and walked several yards in front of them. It was considered an
honour for the women to carry these heavy loads for their husbands.
Feeling sorry for them, this missionary saw a need for some wheelbarrows.
So he sent a telegram back to the United States, ordering 200 of them to
be shipped immediately. When they arrived, he showed the women how
to load the wood in the wheelbarrows. A few weeks later, he returned to
the village to fnd the wheelbarrows all parked in a neat row -- unused.
He asked, “Why aren’t you using them?” One woman explained, “Well,
you see, when we got the wheelbarrows loaded and all of the wood
up on our backs, they were just too heavy to push!!”
That incident suggests the way a lot of people have experienced
Christianity. It holds out a promise to them of a fuller, richer life where all
their problems will disappear. In reality, it just brings additional burdens
-- one more thing to do, one more thing to worry about. That’s the
way, many of us can see Christianity; a list of rules to be kept, a pile of
commands that we see as a responsibility to enforce. Yet Jesus hated
religion and religious practice. This is what he once said, “Are you tired?
Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and
you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with
me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of
grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-ftting on you. Keep company with
me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Back in the 1st Century the New Testament book of Acts, which tells the story of the early church,
records the frst time when people were called Christians – “There in Antioch the Lord’s followers
were frst called Christians” (Acts 11:26). The word was probably a nickname. It literally means “little
Christs” and referred to someone who was committed to Jesus and trying to follow his teaching.
Today in the 21st Century, there can be many sorts of defnitions of what is a Christian; Believing
the Bible, maybe – though Christians can disagree profoundly about what the Bible says; going
to a church, maybe – but going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to
McDonalds makes you a hamburger; Being baptised, maybe – though some churches don’t practice
baptism and some people who are baptised don’t practice Christianity. Living a morally upstanding
life, maybe – though of course many non-Christians do this too; and just how bad do you have to be
to stop being a Christian.
So for me we need to strip away 1900 years of institution and living on the Christianized Continent
of Europe and go back to the 1st Century defnition: someone who was committed to Jesus and trying
to follow his teaching. The truth is you need both aspects of this defnition to begin to understand
what Christianity about. My hope is that if all of who would call ourselves Christians live our lives
literally as disciples who follow Jesus and all that he taught! If we began to do this, then I think we
would help those looking on to see what Christianity really is all about.
