Introduction
Many scientiic e+perts wi$$ te$$ you that we ,ust do not have the a(i$ity to reca$$
acts- ima!es or events perect$y as i we had a photo!raphic memory.
/nortunate$y- a$thou!h peop$e may say that they do have a photo!raphic
memory0 this simp$y isn1t true- as it does not e+ist.
2ut do not worry as throu!h this (oo3 we wi$$ show you the steps that you can
ta3e to he$p improve your memory. In act- with a $itt$e time and a $ot o
practice- many peop$e are a($e to !ain the a(i$ity to memori4e what seems to
(e an impossi($e amount o data and inormation.
5ven i you ,ust want to remem(er where you actua$$y $et your 3eys rom the
ni!ht (eore- then this (oo3 shou$d he$p you.
"ou 3now that in order to !ain muscu$ar stren!th you need to e+ercise- we$$
the same !oes or actua$$y increasin! your a(i$ity to remem(er thin!s. "our
(rain needs e+ercise- as we$$ as (ein! nurtured. So your diet needs to (e
!ood- and you need to $oo3 at ta3in! up much hea$thier ha(its.
/nortunate$y- (ecause our (rains are so comp$e+- they need a $ot o eort in
order to !et them in the (est shape possi($e. There are a num(er o thin!s
that you can $oo3 at doin! which wi$$ he$p you improve the capacity o the
retrieva$ mechanism in your (rain. 2ut irst- $et us ta3e a $oo3 at how it is we
remem(er thin!s.
To put it in simp$e terms- our memory is the activity carried out in our (rain to
reca$$ inormation that we have !ained throu!h e+periences in our $ives.
However- it is a comp$e+ process which invo$ves various parts o the (rain-
and serves us a$$ in very dierent ways. It can either (e short term or $on!
term.
*ith short term memory- you wi$$ ind that your (rain is a($e to store certain
pieces o inormation or on$y a ew seconds or minutes. /nortunate$y- the
pro($em with this memory is that it is very ra!i$e- and i it were to retain a$$ the
inormation it receives- your (rain wou$d soon (e te$$in! you that it has no
more space. 6$us- each person1s short term memory is on$y meant to ho$d
around 7 items at any one time- and this is why- a$thou!h you may (e a($e to
remem(er a new te$ephone num(er or a ew minutes- you wi$$ oten ind that
when you are !oin! to (uy somethin! on$ine with your credit card- you need it
(eside you- (ecause it actua$$y has more than 7 items on it.
%on! term memory is a$$ to do with the inormation that you are ma3in! an
eort to retain- (oth conscious$y and unconscious$y. This is (ecause the
inormation may (e particu$ar$y persona$ and meanin!u$ to you- or it is
(ecause it is somethin! that you need in order to comp$ete a tas3 or to ta3e
some e+ams. However- there is some inormation that you retain in your $on!
term memory which wi$$ need you to ma3e a conscious eort in order to reca$$
it- such as a persona$ memory which re$ates to a speciic e+perience or time
in your $ie- 3nown as episodic memory- or it may (e some actua$ data that
you need to reca$$- and this is 3nown as semantic memory.
The other type o $on! term memory that we a$$ have is 3nown as procedura$
memory- and this is where your memory wi$$ reca$$ s3i$$s or routines that you
use so that you do not have to conscious$y need to reca$$ them.
There are certain parts o the (rain which are especia$$y important in re$ation
to not on$y the ormation- (ut a$so the retention o memories- and these are as
shown (e$ow.
Hippocampus 8 This is ound deep in the human (rain- and p$ays the $ar!est
ro$e in the (rain processin! inormation as memory.
Amygdala 8 This is an a$mond shaped piece o the (rain which is ound c$ose
to the hippocampus and processes a person1s emotions. This particu$ar area
he$ps to imprint memories into the (rain which invo$ve emotions.
Cerebral Cortex 8 This is the outer $ayer o the human (rain- and is where
most $on! term memory is stored in various dierent sectors. It wi$$ a$$ depend
on where particu$ar memories are stored- as to what process the inormation
invo$ves. So $an!ua!e wi$$ (e stored in one sector- sensory input into another-
pro($em so$vin! into yet another sector and so on.
As we$$ as the a(ove- the memory a$so invo$ves communication occurrin!
(etween the (rains various networ3 o neurons and ce$$s 9mi$$ions o which
are activated (y chemica$s in the (rain 3nown as neurotransmitters:.
Chapter 1
How Memory is Gained
6revious$y- we too3 a $oo3 at what memory is and how it wor3s. In this
chapter- we wi$$ ta3e a $oo3 at how our (rain actua$$y acquires- then
conso$idates and ina$$y retrieves the inormation that it has p$aced in our
memory.
1. Acuisition
Any new inormation that enters the (rain wi$$ !o a$on! the pathways (etween
the neurons and those areas where it needs to (e stored. In order or our
(rains to encode this inormation- your memory needs to concentrate- and
un$ess you can ocus intent$y on the inormation that you are tryin! to
memori4e- you wi$$ ind that as the o$d sayin! !oes ;it !oes in one ear and out
the other<. This is why many teachers wi$$ oten (e ound pushin! their
students to actua$$y pay attention to what they are (ein! tau!ht durin! their
$essons.
!. Consolidation o" Memories
2ecause you have concentrated on encodin! the new inormation in your
(rain- the hippocampus wi$$ now send a si!na$ to it to store this inormation as
a $on! term memory. "ou wi$$ ind that this happens more easi$y when the
inormation you1re retainin! re$ates to somethin! that you a$ready 3now
a(out- or i it happens to stimu$ate an emotiona$ response in you.
#. $etrieval
*hen it comes time or you to reca$$ certain pieces o inormation- then the
(rain wi$$ activate the same pattern o ce$$s which were used to store the
inormation initia$$y. I you need to reca$$ a certain piece o inormation more
requent$y than other pieces- then it (ecomes much easier.
However- unortunate$y- as we !row o$der- our memory (e!ins to dec$ine- and
there are severa$ reasons as to why the (rain1s a(i$ity to retain- as we$$ as
retrieve- memories chan!es.
=irst- as we !row o$der- the hippocampus is e+treme$y vu$nera($e and wi$$
deteriorate as we !row o$der. 2ecause o this- it aects our a(i$ity to retain
inormation.
Second$y- as we !row o$der- we (e!in to $ose neurons- and this in turn aects
the activity o the neurotransmitters and their receptors to wor3 correct$y.
Third- as we !row o$der- then we wi$$ oten e+perience a decrease in the
amount o ($ood $owin! to the (rain- and this means $ess nutrients actua$$y
!ettin! to it. 2ecause we have $ess nutrients !oin! to our (rain- it wi$$ ma3e
our (rain activity $ess eicient compared to that o the (rain in a youn!er
person.
2ut these chan!es are oten seen as a s$owin! down in a person1s a(i$ity to
a(sor(- store and retrieve new inormation- and not actua$ memory $oss. In
act- most o the actua$ inormation that a person has !athered over the years
remains $ar!e$y intact- as does our procedura$ memory 9reca$$ tas3s and
routines:.
2ut there are some o$der peop$e who may we$$ deve$op more si!niicant
pro($ems in re$ation to their memory as a resu$t o either some disease such
as A$4heimer1s- or (ecause they have had a stro3e- they have (een in,ured or
their nutritiona$ inta3e is poor. They may a$so have pro($ems in re$ation to
their memory (ecause o either emotiona$ or physio$o!ica$ issues in their
$ives.
Chapter !
%o &ust How Can I Improve My Memory
I you are one o many peop$e who thin3 that they have a poor memory- then
this may (e (ecause you do not have such eective ways in which your are
a($e to not on$y acquire the inormation- (ut the way in which your (rain
processes it. However- un$ess you are suerin! rom some type o disease-
disorder or in,ury- then you shou$d have the a(i$ity to improve your memory.
2e$ow we wi$$ $oo3 at some various ways in which you can he$p to improve
your memory.
1. Always 'ay Attention
I you do not pay enou!h attention to somethin! that you want to $earn a(out-
then your (rain does not have the chance to encode the inormation and then
store it away or uture reerence. It ta3es around > seconds o someone
intent$y ocusin! on a particu$ar piece o inormation in order or it to (e
processed throu!h their hippocampus and then in to the appropriate section
o their memory center. So it is important that you concentrate on one thin!
on$y at a time- and try not to mu$ti?tas3. I you are $i3e some peop$e- and ind
that you (ecome distracted very easi$y- then search out a quiet corner where
you 3now you wi$$ not (e interrupted.
!. Ma(e sure you acuire the in"ormation in a way which suits the way
you learn.
Most o us are visua$ $earners- and so ind that they $earn (est when they are
either readin! or $oo3in! at thin!s that they need to 3now a(out. *hi$e others
are auditory $earners and ind it (etter to $earn thin!s when they are $istenin!.
These types o peop$e may ind it much easier to memori4e inormation (y
recordin! it and then $istenin! to it unti$ it is remem(ered.
#. Get all your senses involved
@on1t ,ust re$y on your eyes- even i you are someone who $earns and
remem(ers thin!s visua$$y. *hy not read out $oud what you need to memori4e-
and try and recite it to yourse$ rhythmica$$yA "ou wi$$ (e ama4ed at
how much (etter your memory (ecomes. A$so try and re$ate the inormation
that you are tryin! to memori4e to co$ors- te+tures- sme$$s as we$$ as tastes.
Many peop$e have ound that (y actua$$y physica$$y rewritin! the inormation
that they need to imprint on to their (rain he$ps them.
). $elate the in"ormation to be gained to something you already (now
about.
*hen co$$ectin! any new data- connect it to inormation that you a$ready have
stored in your memory and which you are a($e to reca$$.
*. +rgani,e the in"ormation
I you need to- write thin!s down in either an address (oo3 or diary- or on a
ca$endar. I you are dea$in! with much more comp$e+ materia$ or data- then
ta3e notes and then reor!ani4e these notes in to speciic cate!ories $ater on
when you have time. I you need to- use (oth words and pictures to he$p you
$earn the inormation that you wish to retain in your memory.
-. .earn to /nderstand and Interpret Complex Material
*hen you are tryin! to $earn more comp$e+ materia$ or su(,ects- then ocus
on ,ust understandin! the (asic ideas o the matter rather than memori4in!
on$y iso$ated parts o it. %oo3 at (ein! a($e to e+p$ain to someone e$se in your
own words a(out the su(,ect or matter.
0. $ehearse the in"ormation that you have obtained
It is important that you review every thin! you have $earned each day on the
same day- and then review it every so oten. A$so- i you can- over $earn a(out
a particu$ar su(,ect or matter- as you wi$$ oten ind that you can (e!in to reca$$
the inormation as i it was second nature to you.
1. 2e 'ositive and %tay Motivated
It is important that you 3eep te$$in! yourse$ that you want to $earn the thin!s
that you need to remem(er. A$so remind yourse$ that you can $earn a(out
thin!s and then remem(er them. I you actua$$y te$$ yourse$ that your memory
is (ad- then this wi$$ actua$$y hamper not on$y you- (ut a$so your (rain in (ein!
a($e to remem(er thin!s. 2ut (y (ein! positive- you are actua$$y he$pin!
yourse$ improve your memory.
Chapter #
A Great 3echniue "or Improving Your Memory
There are many dierent ways in which a person can he$p themse$ves
improve their memory. In this particu$ar chapter o the (oo3- we wi$$ (e
$oo3in! at Mnemonic devices 9the initia$ ;M< in this word is si$ent:.
These particu$ar devices he$p a person (y providin! them with c$ues in order
or them to remem(er somethin!. In most cases- a person wi$$ associate the
inormation that they are tryin! to remem(er with either a visua$ ima!e- a
sentence or with a particu$ar word.
The most common types o mnemonic devices are as o$$owsB?
1. 4isual Images
It is important that a person uses positive and p$easant ima!es- as the (rain
wi$$ oten ($oc3 out those which they ind to (e unp$easant. A$so- ma3e them
as vivid- co$oru$ as we$$ as three dimensiona$- as this ma3es it a$$ the easier
or you to remem(er them.
!. 5ords
A$so- when usin! sentences- then ma3e sure that the irst $etter o each word
in it represents the initia$ o what it is you are tryin! to remem(er. There are
mi$$ions o musicians around the wor$d who used the sentence ;5very !ood
(oy does ine< in order that they cou$d memori4e the $ines o the tre($e sta.
The irst $etters o each word in the a(ove sentence represent the notes 5- G-
2- @ and =. A$so you wi$$ ind that medica$ students- in order to $earn the
!roups o nerves- (ones and other eatures o the human (ody- wi$$ use
nonsense sentences in order that they retain the inormation much more
easi$y- as we$$ as (ein! a($e to reca$$ it when required.
#. Acronyms
This is where a person wi$$ use initia$s when then creatin! a pronouncea($e
word. =or e+amp$e musicians wi$$ remem(er the spaces (etween the $ines on
the tre($e sta (y sayin! the word ;ace< which stands or the other notes =- A-
C and 5.
). $hymes and Alliteration
*hen I was youn!er- we $earned the rhyme ;3C days hath Septem(er- Apri$-
June and Dovem(er. 2ut a$$ the rest hath 31 e+cept or =e(ruary a$one.< So
why not use this in the same way or other thin!s- such as i you are tryin! to
reca$$ a co?wor3ers nameA 2y providin! sym(o$i4ation to them- you shou$d (e
a($e to reca$$ their name without any pro($ems. =or e+amp$e- suppose you
wor3 with a !uy ca$$ed Mi3e- who happens to (e a $itt$e unny- you can try
remem(erin! him as ;Mad Mi3e<.
*. &o(es
/se these to remem(er acts- i!ures and names. Eten- peop$e ind it easier
to remem(er thin!s which are either unny or weird- rather than somethin!
which is a $itt$e more ordinary.
-. Chun(ing In"ormation
*ith this mnemonic device you wi$$ arran!e a $on! $ist o inormation into
sma$$er !roups or sections- ma3in! them much easier to remem(er. Eten
peop$e ind that it is much easier to remem(er their Socia$ Security num(er
once they have arran!ed it into much sma$$er !roups o di!its- say 3 or # in
each !roup- rather than tryin! to remem(er the who$e F di!its to!ether.
0. .oci Method
This is (oth a very ancient and eective way or a person to remem(er a $ot o
inormation- say or e+amp$e- a speech that they wi$$ (e !ivin!. *hat you
need to do with this method is associate each part o what it is you have to
remem(er with a particu$ar $andmar3 or spot on a route that you 3now very
we$$- or e+amp$e- the route you use each day to !et to wor3.
1. 6xercise your 2rain
This is pro(a($y one o the (est ways o improvin! your memory.
/nortunate$y- the $ess you use your (rain- then the more chances you wi$$
have o (ein! una($e to retain inormation. So i you can- e+ercise it as much
as possi($e and you wi$$ soon ind that you are not on$y a($e to process
inormation (etter- (ut a$so ind it much easier to remem(er the inormation as
we$$.
There are now computer !ames avai$a($e (oth or your 6C and many o the
handhe$d computers- such as Game 2oy and 6S6- which are speciica$$y
desi!ned to he$p e+ercise the (rain. Ene o the most common o these that is
re!u$ar$y advertised (oth on TG- in ma!a4ines and on$ine is the ;@r 2rain
Game<.
Chapter )
A Healthy .i"estyle "or an Improved Memory
2y treatin! your (ody we$$- you shou$d (e a($e to enhance your a(i$ities at
(ein! a($e to process and reca$$ inormation.
2e$ow- we wi$$ ta3e a $oo3 at some dierent hea$thy ha(its you cou$d inte!rate
in to the $ie you $ead at the present time in order to he$p improve your
memory.
1. 6xercise
Ta3in! re!u$ar e+ercise he$ps to increase the $ow o o+y!en to the (rain.
This- in turn- reduces the ris3 or you suerin! rom disorders which can $ead
to memory $oss- such as cardiovascu$ar diseases or dia(etes.
A$so- it he$ps to improve the eects that the he$pu$ (rain chemica$s have- as
we$$ as protectin! those (rain ce$$s you a$ready have.
!. Manage your %tress .evels
The stress hormone 3nown as Cortiso$ can actua$$y cause dama!e to the
hippocampus in the (rain i a person is una($e to re$ieve the stress that they
are ee$in!. In most cases- a person who is ee$in! stressed wi$$ ind it much
more diicu$t to concentrate on thin!s- which in turn resu$ts in them actua$$y
not (ein! a($e to process and retain inormation easi$y.
#. Improve your %leeping Habits
*e a$$ need s$eep- and it is very important- as it he$ps the memory to
conso$idate the inormation we have o(tained durin! the day. /nortunate$y- i
you are someone who suers rom insomnia or s$eep apnea- or ,ust !enera$$y
do not $i3e to s$eep more than a ew hours each ni!ht- then durin! the day-
you wi$$ (e ee$in! tired and wi$$ ind it very diicu$t to concentrate.
). 7o 8ot %mo(e
Anyone who smo3es is at a !reater ris3 o suerin! rom a vascu$ar disorder-
which in turn can resu$t in them havin! a stro3e- or their arteries (ecome
constricted- and so the de$ivery o o+y!en to the (rain is diminished.
*. Improve your 7iet
Aren1t we a$$ (ein! to$d these days that a !ood diet is one which contains ruit-
ve!eta($es as we$$ as who$e !rains and hea$thy atsA Dot on$y can a !ood diet
provide our (ody with p$enty o hea$th (eneits- it can a$so he$p to improve a
person1s memory.
'esearch carried out is indicatin! that certain nutrients wi$$ he$p to not on$y
nurture- (ut a$so stimu$ate the unctions o the (rain.
a. Gitamin 2)- 212 and =o$ic Acid
These he$p to protect the (rains neurons (y (rea3in! down
homocysteine- which is an amino acid and which is to+ic to the nerve
ce$$s. 2ut they a$so he$p to ma3e red ($ood ce$$s- which our (odies
need in order to transport o+y!en around it- inc$udin! to the (rain.
The (est p$aces to !et a !ood source o Gitamins 2 rom are in
spinach- as we$$ as other types o dar3 !reen $eaed ve!eta($es-
(rocco$i- aspara!us- straw(erries- me$ons as we$$ as ($ac3 (eans
and other orms o $e!umes. A$so- you shou$d increase your inta3e o
ruit and soy(eans.
(. Antio+idants
Speciica$$y- we are $oo3in! at Gitamins C and 5- a$on! with 2eta
Carotene. They he$p to i!ht any ree radica$s in the (ody- which are
atoms that are ormed when o+y!en is a($e to interact with certain
mo$ecu$es in the (ody. They are hi!h$y reactive- and can cause
dama!e to the (ody1s ce$$s. 2ut antio+idants are a($e to interact with
these sae$y- and so are a($e to neutra$i4e them. These antio+idants
can he$p to improve the $ow o o+y!en throu!h our (odies and to the
(rain.
The (est p$aces to ind these particu$ar antio+idants in are
($ue(erries- and a$$ other sorts o (erries- a$on! with sweet potatoes-
red tomatoes- spinach as we$$ as (rocco$i and !reen tea- nuts and
seeds. A$so- citrus ruits and $iver are a !reat source or !ettin!
antio+idants as we$$.
c. =atty Acids 8 Eme!a 3
These are concentrated in the (rain and are associated with a
person1s co!nitive unctions. These count as hea$thy ats in a
person1s diet- as opposed to those which are not- such as saturated
and trans ats. They he$p to protect a person a!ainst in$ammation-
as we$$ as havin! a hi!h $eve$ o cho$estero$ in their (ody.
The (est p$aces to o(tain Eme!a 3 atty acids is (y eatin! co$d water
ish- such as sa$mon- herrin!- tuna- mac3ere$ or ha$i(ut. A$so-
wa$nuts- wa$nut oi$- $a+seed and its oi$ are a !ood source o Eme!a
3 atty acids as we$$.
6$us- as we !row o$der- we are more $i3e$y to suer rom a deiciency o (oth
Gitamin 212 and =o$ic Acid- and so it is important that o$der peop$e use a
supp$ement to counteract such deiciencies. I you are someone who is not
particu$ar$y 3een on ish- then a$so inc$ude an Eme!a 3 supp$ement as part o
your new diet re!ime. However- no nutrient wi$$ wor3 eective$y without us
consumin! the ri!ht sorts o oods as we$$. Thereore- it is important that as
part o your hea$thy diet re!ime- you ensure that you eat p$enty o co$oru$
p$ant oods and choose those ats which can he$p to 3eep your arteries c$ear.
In the $on! run- not on$y your (ody- (ut your (rain wi$$ (e than3in! you or the
chan!es that you have made.
Chapter *
$emember 3hings by Association
Eur memory wor3s (y remem(erin! thin!s throu!h association. *hat this
means is that every piece o inormation we have in our memory is connected
to another piece in one way or another.
So i you were !iven the word- say- ;app$e<- and then you may do somethin!
$i3e this in order to remem(er what an app$e isB ;red- round- sweet- doctor-
tree and ruit<. *hich as you can see is where such thin!s as ;an app$e a day
3eeps the doctor away< may (e a sayin! that peop$e re!u$ar$y use in order to
remem(er that eatin! !ood hea$thy oods- such as ruit- wi$$ 3eep them rom
!ettin! i$$.
A$so- i you were as3ed (y some what the 7
th
$etter o the a$pha(et was- then
the chances are you wou$d start o (y sayin! to yourse$ ;a- (- c- d- e- - !<
and then out $oud you wou$d say G. @urin! this you have (een usin!
association- as you 3now that the irst $etter o the a$pha(et is A and you have
3ept on !oin! throu!h them unti$ you have ended up the $etter that you were
$oo3in! or.
A$thou!h many peop$e thin3 that they have a (ad memory- in truth- they don1t.
In act- most o us have rea$$y !ood memories0 it1s ,ust that we are not we$$
practiced in usin! them to their u$$ eectiveness. "et- i this is true- then why
do some peop$e ind it so hard to remem(er certain thin!sA
As previous$y mentioned- our memory wor3s usin! association. I there is no
o(vious association (etween certain thin!s- then it ma3es it very diicu$t or
us to remem(er them. Suppose- or e+amp$e- you need to remem(er that the
p$ane you are catchin! ta3es o at 2pm. However- as there is nothin! a(out
this particu$ar p$an which wou$d su!!est the num(er 2 to you- then it is easi$y
or!otten- and unortunate$y you may ind yourse$ endin! up missin! your
$i!ht.
However- i as mentioned a(ove- our memory wor3s (y association- then we
shou$d active$y wor3 at indin! a way to create an association (etween the
two (its o inormation re$atin! to the $i!ht. So- or e+amp$e- you cou$d
ima!ine in your mind that the p$ane you need to catch at 2pm has 2 win!s.
There then is your association ;2 win!s H 2pm<. In this way- we are 1C times
more $i3e$y to remem(er the time at which the $i!ht is due to ta3e o- even
once it has !one rom our short term memory.
However- you may we$$ ind that when certain pieces o inormation are not
o(vious$y re$ated- you wi$$ need to (e a $itt$e more creative with $in3in! thin!s
to!ether in order to orm an association. 2ut it rea$$y isn1t as hard as it may
seem at irst. *hen you were at schoo$- you were a$ways (ein! tau!ht
rhymes and acronyms at schoo$ which he$ped you t remem(er thin!s- so why
not use the same method nowA =or e+amp$e- one such one you may have
$earned at schoo$ was ;Dever 5at Shredded *heat<- which provides you with
the points o the compass ;Dorth 5ast South *est<.
These particu$ar methods wor3- as they orm an easy to remem(er- (ut yet
c$ever association (etween themse$ves and the inormation that it is we are
tryin! to remem(er.
The who$e idea when usin! association in order to remem(er thin!s is to (e
creative. There is no need or you to invent a rhyme or a poem or each time
you want to remem(er somethin!- in most cases- ,ust thin3in! o some
picture in your mind which $in3s pieces o inormation to!ether- which is either

I you want to see how eective$y association wor3s- then $oo3 at the some o
the words shown (e$ow and try to come up with somethin! that wi$$ associate
the word on the $et with the one on the ri!ht. Say- or e+amp$e- with the irst
pair you shou$d ima!ine a mouse that has a $on! tai$ and when it is sat sti$$- it
tai$ cur$s round in to the shape o the $etter S. *hereas with popcorn- the

So now you have (e!un to orm associations (etween these !roups- you may
have had trou($e with 1 or 2 o them. Dow cover up the words on the ri!ht
hand side o the $ist and see i you can name them usin! the word that is

3. 'hymin!
