HUMAN RIGHTS - SOCIAL WORK RESPONSE
The Declaration oI Human Rights basically means that mankind still lives in many kinds
oI slaveries. The very need oI such declaration also shows that man has been deceived Ior
thousands oI years. Man has a right to dignity, to health; a right to grow, so that he can blossom
into his ultimate Ilowering. This ultimate Ilowering is his right. He is born with the seeds, but the
society where he lives in does not provide him the needed soil, appropriate caring, the conducive
atmosphere to grow normally. Exploitative system that prevails in the society such as inequality
in status, caste, inappropriate governance, pseudo religious attributes, invasion oI erotic culture
which is not conducive Ior that particular society are responsible Ior not permitting the seed to
blossom. It is where the intervention oI NGOs and Social workers needed to assist the individual
to have a conducive atmosphere.
The right to liIe is possible only in a certain, diIIerent atmosphere which is not present on
the earth at the moment. II it is available then unmindIul killing oI animals will not happen.
Another problem is over population and starvation. Birth control has to be one`s own right. It is
not aborting the Iormed Ietus but preventing the conception itselI by using birth control pills. In
the name oI souvernity and security oI nations unnecessary wars Iurther take away lives oI
innocent people. Unless we create an atmosphere oI reverence Ior liIe, man cannot realize the
goal oI getting his Iundamental right oI liIe.
The very concept oI ensuring one`s right should help the individual to realize his Iull
potential and not merely getting away Irom the exploitation. It has been viewed that
organizations undertake right based work always extend their services to the rudimentary stage
oI just assist the person to come out oI the clutches oI exploiters and then leave them on their
own without providing adequate care to make him to be Iree. Take Ior example, organizations
engaged in releasing bonded laborers consciously work to remove the concerned persons Irom
bondage and once they are released Iurther work is not eIIective to the extent oI providing
permanent relieI to the released persons. It is the continuity oI work that has to be ensured so
that enjoyment oI one`s right gets IulIilled.
Human rights work in the perspective oI ProIessional social work need to concentrate in
three areas such as curriculum, training and practice. It is not mere the theoretical input on
human rights but the case studies oI practices oI diIIerent NGOs shall be part oI the curriculum.
UnIortunately, Social Work teachers are not practitioners and rarely practitioners are inducted as
teachers. Human right practitioners shall be given the responsibility oI teaching human rights
subject in the school oI social work.
