Traditional, realistic floral patterns have always been a beloved staple of fabric
and wallpaper design, but consider the contemporary alternative. Whether
simpler, more graphic, or rendered in subtle tone-on-tone colour palettes,
newer floral combinations will bring drama and individuality to rooms.
Here, a fresh lineup of wallpaper patterns
shows how it’s done.

Fabric designer and Marimekko founder Armi Ratia
liked fowers but thought they belonged in nature,
not on her fabric patterns. Staff designer Maija Isola
didn’t agree, though, and, inspired by the bright-
coloured poppies in her garden, she came up with
this eye-popping pattern. The boss loved it—
luckily—and incorporated the pattern, called Unikko,
into the 1964 collection for the Helsinki-based textile,
apparel and home-accessories company. It was a
smash. Fifty years on, we’re still feeling the love for
Unikko. Never out of production, the pattern has
become iconic, not only of the Marimekko brand but
also of the convention-blasting fower-power sixties.
Unikko has been parlayed over the years into a
myriad of products, from clothing and tableware to
the livery of Finland’s fagship carrier, Finnair. As
part of this year’s milestone 50th anniversary,
Marimekko is launching this spring and fall a
refreshed take on the poppy design with fashion,
home and textile collections, including wallpapers,
in a new range of up-to-date colours.

DESIGNPHILE IN GOOD TASTE
THE SENSUAL
SUMMER WHITE
If the fruit is the medium and the setting is the
message, chardonnay is the great interpreter.
BY JOHN BOSSY
There is a reason French winemakers rarely display the names
of grape varietals on their labels. It is, in part, tradition, but the
tradition itself is rooted in a philosophy of sorts. The belief is that the
character of a wine derives more from the specifics of place or terroir
than from the fruit itself. In other words, the fruit is the medium,
while the setting—including climate, soil and topography—is the
message. Just as an architect uses concrete, steel, glass and wood to
create structures that integrate with or, indeed, enhance the sur-
rounding landscape, the winemaker attempts, using harvested
grapes, to express the character and personality of the land, which
gives life to the vines. In a sense, it’s like giving new life back to that
which gave life.
In my experience, when it comes to white wine, the
varietal that interprets “place” to a higher degree than
any other is chardonnay. It’s like a chameleon, but a
very democratic one, because it seems to grow every-
where vines are planted, taking on different guises
from one region to the next. The range of flavours and
textures is vast, from austere and lemony, shot through
with gunflint, to rich and unctuous, laden with tropical
fruit. Two regions stand out for their ability to consis-
tently produce some of the most interesting and there-
fore most prized chardonnays on the planet. I am
speaking of Burgundy in France and sunny California
in the U.S.
Burgundy is the apogee (the LCBO recently listed a
Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru for $358),
always concerned with the particularities of place. The
Benedictine monks of the early medieval period (who
must have been huge aficionados of the good stuff)
painstakingly identified and subdivided every tiny little
parcel of land in the Côte d’Or, or “Golden Slope,” ac-
cording to the character and quality of the wine pro-
duced there. To this day, the plots are organized on the
Benedictine model. The terroir itself, the Côte d’Or, is a great ridge formed
of limestone and clay. Limestone is often the critical component in wine,
delivering energy and character to the glass. The chardonnays of Burgundy,
especially the premier and grand crus, are positively brimming with lively
minerality. The grape itself, chardonnay, is a somewhat neutral berry that seems
to soak up every nuance that the soil has to offer. The result—complex,
balanced, intense, intricate, long-lasting wines that offer aromas of crushed
stone, moss, honey and white flowers. In recent years, look for the 2009s and
the 2010s.
California is a different story. The limestone is absent, but there is an abun-

You don’t have to be precious to serve your
top-drawer chardonnay, especially white
burgundy, in a huge tapered glass. In fact, if you
don’t, you may as well pour it, swirl it and throw
it away. Delicious chardonnays can be as
full-bodied and complex as reds, so let them
breathe and serve them like reds in a large glass
and not too cold; otherwise, the wonderful
aromatics will be lost. Just right is about 10 to
12 degrees Celsius. I would recommend
Burgundian glasses made by Riedel (Vinum
series Burgundy Red), but other brands, like
Spiegelau, are also excellent. —J.B.
Left: Vinum Burgundy glass
from Riedel Crystal, $59/set of two.
Right: Hybrid Wine series glass
from Spiegelau, $30.
The glass: bigger is better
dance of sun. Winemakers from the cooler regions of Carneros and the Russian
River Valley, among others, are capable of producing top-flight chardonnays,
but these require more intervention than those in Burgundy. Because Califor-
nian wines can be so lush and muscular, the danger is in going too far, too ripe
and too powerful. I love the big chardonnays of California, but they must be
balanced with enough acidity to give the wine vibrancy and just enough oak to
introduce complexity to their natural richness. Complexity is triggered by the
contrasting elements in wine, which begin in conflict and end in harmony.
Watch for the 2010s and the 2012s.
Now for the wines.

La Follette Lorenzo Vineyard
Chardonnay 2010
Russian River Valley
Sonoma Coast, California $45
In California, says winemaker Greg La Follette, in order
to get complex wines, you have to take risks. His
chardonnay goes into the barrel “dirty,” meaning it
contains solids such as tannins, yeasts and dead yeast
cells. Prior to fermentation, the juice looks like mud. It
emerges as a crystal-clear, pale gold jewel of a wine
packed with power and intensity. Allow time for the
aromas of honey, lemon, white pepper and flowers to
unwind in the glass. This wine is tight, but it explodes on
the palate with bursts of minerally lemon/lime, candied
pecans and spices. The finish is long and intense. Pair
with pan-seared foie gras or smoked salmon.

Burgundy. These two wines are from the same
winemaker using similar techniques on chardonnay
grapes in the same year. The contrast is striking.
The Puligny is intense on the nose and palate. It breathes
like a fresh fall morning, tangy and bright with a soupçon
of stone fruits, limestone and wood smoke. This wine will
develop secondary flavours over the next five years, but
right now it’s all mouth-watering fruit, focused and well
framed. The finish is fresh, lively and long lasting.
Contrast this wine with pan-seared scallops in a saffron
cream sauce.
Score: 94
The Chassagne is of a deeper gold colour and rounder in
taste and feel. On the nose, ripe apple is scented with
toasted almonds and beeswax. Perhaps this is developing
more quickly than the Puligny because it seemed to me
more mature and complex. It is rich and spicy to the
taste with a shade of toasted biscuit on the lovely, long
finish. Serve with roast chicken and green beans sautéed
in butter and garlic, and sprinkled with slivered almonds.

WORKS IN PROGRESS
A young Cuban artist’s output is emblematic of an energetic current
in the Cuban art scene.
Niels Reyes’s studio in Havana is
overfowing with works in progress. He is
painting non-stop, preparing 15 large canvases
for his solo show in September, in Panama
City. The exhibit is part of his prize for
garnering frst place at the Post-It art show in
Havana last November, featuring contemporary
artists aged 35 and under—the frst arts event
in Cuba to offer cash prizes.
Reyes refects his generation of re-energized
local artists who are fnding their own voice in
Cuba. This recent, gradual surge in free
expression is a marked departure in a country
where, in the early days of the Castro era and
during the mid-1990s, when Soviet Russia
pulled out, fuel shortages and food rationing
were part of daily life, along with governmental
controls. Nowadays, Cuban artists experience
almost complete freedom and are accorded a
prestige similar to that enjoyed by key
politicians and baseball players.
Increasingly commanding global attention,
Cuban art, which comes from a shaker of
European, Caribbean and African infuences, is
attracting major galleries and collectors from
Europe, South America and, more recently, the
U.S. In 1991 the U.S. government legalized the
importation of artworks from Cuba, and now
the Obama administration has virtually no
restrictions on Cuban artists visiting the U.S.
to showcase their work.
Like his contemporaries, Reyes had been
excluded from established art circles in Cuba.
Dodging the police, they staged guerrilla art
exhibitions in public places and sold their work
in Havana to foreign residents and embassy
workers. With the recent move from the
government to showcase Cuban artists
globally, Reyes and his cohorts embraced the
proliferation of arts events in the country and
abroad. His participation in 2008 in the pivotal
Bla Bla Bla Show at the Servando Art Gallery in
Havana paved the way for an invitation to a
group show in Madrid the following year—the
frst time he travelled outside of Cuba. At the
recent Havana Biennial, American art collector
Steve Cohen bought eight of Reyes’s works.
This triggered a solo show for Reyes in Zurich,
followed by a residency to study in Vienna.
Reyes’s work has also been shown in
Toronto recently, as part of an exhibition by
seven Cuban artists. Already, with more shows
in North America on the horizon, Reyes is
outgrowing his studio in Havana. His
inspiration nonetheless comes from his home
country. “I am a sponge,” he says. “When I go
on the streets, I see so much.” What he takes
in is interpreted through his travels and his art
infuences to create a unique and exciting
representation of Cuban life. —John Morris

Elegance and innovation of design are remarkably possible
in smaller, sustainably built packages. Consider the
residential component of the winners of the Design
Excellence Awards given in 2014 by the Ontario Association
of Architects (OAA). Projects were judged for creativity,
context, sustainability and legacy potential, among other
aspects. The three homes shown here—new and
renovated houses in the city, and a lakeside cabin—
deserve attention as satisfying responses to the needs
of contemporary homeowners.

Its shape was inspired by an overturned boat
found on the property, and the silhouette of
this family cottage on a lake in Bracebridge,
Ont., does bear a resemblance to an object
half-burrowed into the landscape. It seems the
perfect posture for a cottage meant to provide
shelter, comfort and retreat for intervals over
the four seasons of the year. Clad inside and
out in cedar—shakes, siding, roof, interior
walls and ceiling—the Stealth Cabin, designed
by Toronto-based architectural firm Superkül,
will weather over time to fit even more subtly
into its wooded backdrop. In the meantime, it
has the sturdiness and warmth of a traditional
log cabin, yet the attention to functional details
suggests a much more modern structure:
thoughtfully positioned windows providing
light-filled interior spaces; streamlined built-in
furnishings and minimalist light fixtures; and
a lightweight, semi-transparent quality
achieved with well-placed voids and hollows.

promise of a getaway with a variety of cosy corners and intimate

the north half can be closed off when not in use to reduce
energy consumption. Exhaust air from the high-efficiency
fireplace is ducted under the concrete floor slab to provide
additional heating.

Finding flow
When a downtown Toronto homeowner
contacts an architect for consultation on a
renovation, there are always two key
complaints: the homeowner is starved for light
and keen for connection to the “outdoors”—
that little patch of green beyond the back door.
They just didn’t build them to serve those
needs back in the day, when Toronto was filling
up with the row houses, semis and tall
Victorians that are typical of urban housing
stock of a century ago.
Innovative solutions to those challenges are
on display in this 128-year-old home that was
renovated by Toronto-based Dubbeldam
Architecture + Design. The narrow main level
was opened up from front to back, allowing
maximum flow of natural light through the
formerly cramped spaces and creating a
sightline through the house to the courtyard,
visible through a generous expanse of floor-to-
ceiling windows. This glass boundary draws the
attention beyond the interior to an outdoor
dining area and four-seasons garden, creating
the impression that the main floor is larger than
its actual footprint, which hasn’t increased.

DESIGNPHILE INVESTING
DO IT FOR LOVE
Your beloved collectibles might increase in value over time.
Then again, they might not.
BY DOUGLAS GOOLD
I love cars. I have had a series of very good
sports cars (Mazda RX-7, Porsche Cayman)
and very bad sports cars (MGB, Fiat Spider),
which were fun but famously unreliable. Ever
heard of Joseph Lucas, founder of Lucas
Industries, which made the electronics for
MGBs? Where would you least like those
electronics, including the fuel pump, to fail? It
happened to me in my orange MGB in the
middle of the Brooklyn Bridge—and I was in the
inside lane. Oddly, the New York drivers behind
me were less than sympathetic. It is not for
nothing that old Joe was called “the Prince
of Darkness.”
I have owned only one car that could pass as
a collectible, on the lower end of the scale. It
was a 1951 Bentley Mark VI, with
suicide doors (the back doors open
from the front) and rare black-on-white
instrumentation. It was a truly
gorgeous car, with rolling fenders, the
famous vertical grill topped with a
stylized B, and a curtain that could be
lowered across the rear window for
privacy.
Less happily, the Bentley was hard to
drive and a total money pit, particularly
since I didn’t drive it very often. There
was insurance, storage fees, and upkeep
and restoration bills. Lots and lots of
very large bills. I eventually sold it
privately at a big loss.
Others have done better with
collectibles, in some cases, much, much
better. The Economist valuables index
and Knight Frank’s Luxury Investment
Index show huge gains over a 10-year period
(211 and 175 per cent, respectively). Classic cars
lead both indexes, and coins, stamps and wine
have done well; the only loser over a decade was
furniture. Most collected was fine art, watches,
wine, jewelry and cars, in that order. Eric Clapton
sold a platinum Patek Philippe wristwatch at
auction for $3.6 million (all prices U.S.). While
the indexes have flaws—for example, most art
indexes include only auction sales, not private
sales—they do suggest that the prices of most
collectibles have risen smartly.
Clearly, though, as my limited experience
shows, you need to look before you leap. How
knowledgeable are you about the class of
collectibles you are interested in? And what
precisely is your motive?
Collectibles are not called “investments of
passion” for nothing, so it is not surprising that
Knight Frank reports that 61 per cent of
collectors cite “personal pleasure” as their
primary motive. There is, of course, something
to be said for investing in an asset class beyond
real estate and securities, and one in which
prices are largely determined by different
criteria. Yet it is estimated that ultra-high-net-
worth individuals have an average of only
4 per cent of their assets in collectibles.
Of course, your collectible may have a huge
paper value, but who is going to buy it? Markets
for very high-end items are tiny and illiquid,
something you might want to consider in case
the stock markets collapse (again), and you get
that margin call.
All of this leads me to a remarkable, little-
known international success story. RM Auctions
began in Chatham, Ont., in 1976, when Rob
Myers set up his restoration business in a
one-car garage. Headquartered in the tiny, nearby
town of Blenheim, it is now the world’s largest
auction house for investment-grade cars, with
buyers and sellers in 60 countries. Last summer,
it sold a 1967 Ferrari 275 for $27.5 million to
Canadian fashion billionaire Lawrence Stroll, the
most ever paid for a road car. This year in May, it
scheduled the auction of two iconic collectibles to
coincide with Monaco’s Grand Prix—the 1958
Riva Tritone boat owned by Prince Rainier and
Princess Grace, and James Hunt’s Formula One
1974 Hesketh 308. I talked with RM’s Jack
Boxtrom, who owns and races storied
cars, including a Chaparral, for which
he was offered $3 million (he turned it
down). Jack said the market was
“robust” for cars just like these and, in
particular, for the “red cars”—Ferraris.
It turns out that my fretting about the
cost of upkeep and restoration doesn’t
apply to the ultra-rich. “If you buy a car
for $10 million, who cares about the cost
of upkeep? It’s immaterial,” Jack told me.
Not that all of RM’s cars are quite in
that lofty category. At a recent RM
auction on Amelia Island, Florida,
purchases ranged from $55,000 for
a 1965 Mustang convertible to $1.8
million for an iconic 1957 Mercedes-
Benz 300 SL roadster, similar to the
silver 300 SL former Prime Minister
Pierre Trudeau used to drive.
My advice? Enjoy your collectible, while
informing yourself exactly how easy or difficult
it might be to sell, and for how much.

SUMMER 2014 29
Quadra Island, B.C.
hen a three-bedroom house requires seven years to
complete, it’s almost always a sign that, along the way, there
were errors, firings, separations or economic calamities—the
dark tetrad of domestic architecture. Except that there is also
this house, which in April was named the sole private residence to be
accorded one of 12 biannually awarded Governor General’s Medals in
Architecture. In its case, the long gestation had distinctly different causes:
architects renowned for an intricately detailed brand of innovation;
scientist clients intent on getting things precisely right; and a shared and
remarkable commitment to utilizing strictly local resources on a remote
island that is home to fewer than 2,500 people.
The architectural practice is that of John and Patricia Patkau, husband
and wife principals of Vancouver-based Patkau Architects. For more than
three decades, the Patkaus have specialized in small- and medium-sized
commissions such as schools, galleries, libraries and homes that give them
latitude to solve problems in creative ways while practising what John
Patkau acknowledges can probably be called capital-A architecture. Within
the West Coast architectural community, they are indisputably stars.
Nationally and internationally, they have won far more than their share of
awards (including a double-digit haul of Governor General’s medals like
this year’s), but somehow bubble away just below the level of widespread
public acclaim.
When clients Eric Peterson and Christina Munck approached them, says
John Patkau, their assumption was that the couple would be similar to most
of their other residential clients—academics, maybe, with a strong interest
in contemporary design but a limited budget for exploring those interests.
Patkau was at least partly right. Peterson did once have a foot in academia. A
PhD biologist, he held research posts at Harvard and McGill, but
subsequently he and a partner established Mitra Imaging, a medical software

ARCHITECTURE
company in Waterloo, Ont., which they sold in 2002 for almost $300 million.
The couple, then resident in the Waterloo area, could have done whatever
they wanted; what, in fact, they wanted was to give most of their money
away, but very much on their own terms. So Peterson and Munck, also a
biologist, created the Tula Foundation, into which they have since poured
more than $70 million. Some of that has gone into health programs in
Guatemala and First Nations communities in Canada, but the bulk has
been devoted to environmental research and initiatives on the B.C. Coast,
where Peterson grew up, and where the couple found themselves spending
more and more of their time.
They had already purchased a seaside cottage on Quadra Island when
they learned that the property next door, a welding shop, was up for sale.
And after they had acquired a failed resort on ultra-remote Calvert Island
Above: The living wall was requested by Christina
Munck. Architect John Patkau jokes that it is her
“Rousseau moment,” a reference to the French
painter’s lush jungle landscapes. Across the
courtyard lies one of the bedroom wings. To rein
themselves in, the architects decided that the
structure’s many bends would all have to be
15 degrees.

and turned it into a base that is seasonally home to as many as 100
researchers, it was clear they had to stop commuting and make the area
their permanent home. But it was only after buying the welding shop to
prevent unwanted local development did the realization spark that the
place just might be their spot.
John Patkau recalls the couple who came to see them at the office as very
self-effacing. But there was something else that the Patkaus didn’t know
about Eric Peterson then: he had grown up in an architect’s home. In fact,
his father had been forced to abandon the profession due to failing
eyesight. Seeking advice, Peterson and Munck asked Peterson Sr. how to
proceed with their short list of potential designers. His response: Walk
away from anyone who presented options and asked which you prefer,
recalls Munck. Alone among those approached, the Patkaus passed the
audition, and work on the house began.
Of all the welding shops in the world, none has occupied a site quite like
the one purchased by Peterson and Munck. Quadra is not one of B.C.’s
equally craggy but otherwise sheltered and idyllic southern Gulf Islands.
Rather, Quadra forms the northern boundary of the Strait of Georgia, or
the Salish Sea, as it is increasingly being called. To the north lies the Inside
Passage coastal route between Vancouver Island and the mainland, with its
maze of narrow channels separating dozens of islands, many of them
uninhabited. To the south, there’s a couple hundred kilometres of fairly
open water where gales routinely gather.
Above: This deck, one of two on the property, cantilevers
over the beach toward the southwest, where it catches the
evening light. The home presses up to within millimetres of
the allowable setback from the ocean.
Below, and opposite, bottom: In several places the floors
feature glass cut-outs to reveal the beach and rocks below.
Meanwhile, “floating” concrete walls add yet more wow
factor—the secret sauce that helps vault some Modernist
designs into a higher realm.

SUMMER 2014 35
Quadra Island, B.C.
It soon became clear to the Patkaus and David Shone, their colleague and
the project’s lead designer, that the property was special even by Quadra
standards. On one side, mere metres from the logical building site, is a
huge slab of basalt covered in moss and ferns. On the other is an inlet and
tidal pool. In front is a beach strewn with driftwood that gets re-tossed by
every winter storm.
What to do with a spot like that? Many are the West Coast home designs
that tackle such a challenge with massive floor-to-vaulted-ceiling windows
on every side. That was not the Patkaus’ solution. Instead, their vision
called for a structure that twisted and turned, so that walls could face each
of the three primary views head on. Some of the windows on those walls
would indeed be floor to ceiling, but others would be floor-to-waist height.
These would go in the bedrooms, where the view to be framed was the one
from the bed. Both clients and designers had recently visited Japan and
were attuned to those kinds of possibilities, says John Patkau.
Additional light would be gathered through skylights and the device of
an inner courtyard, which would get a reflecting pool using water flowing
by in a small creek. There would be a green roof covered in the same moss,
grass and ferns growing on the adjacent rock.
Inside, slab counters in the kitchen and main room would be skewed at
irregular angles in homage to the logs outside the windows. Walls would be
pure concrete, even in places where they floated above the floor, while a ceiling
treatment would utilize wooden slats hiding subtle lighting. Floors would be
smooth oak except where they were, yes, glass: The home cantilevered over a
cliff and the view below was every bit as interesting as the one beyond. And all
of this would be finished in the most minimalist possible way—a structure of
intense complexity looking as simple as could be.
There was just one problem: Who would build it?
The architects initially assumed that this was a job for an experienced,
carriage-trade Vancouver builder, and never mind the five-hour, two-ferry
commute. But the 2010 Olympics loomed on the horizon then, and every
contractor for hundreds of kilometres around had all the work they could
handle. Peterson and Munck, on the other hand, had always hoped that the
work could be done locally and took it upon themselves to interview
potential candidates much as they had with the architects.
John Patkau views it as mostly luck that the couple landed with Quadra
Island builders J Toelle Construction, but Munck recalls the phone call she
received after interviewing the firm. We’ve talked it over with our guys, said
owner John Toelle, and we’re all very excited about this.
And so began the almost-seven-year-long building marathon, overseen
architecturally by Shone, who visited on an almost monthly basis, while
Left: Here, off the study, a wall of windows showcases Quadra Island’s

consulting day by day, using smart phones, with what proved to be a crack
construction team. John Patkau, in retrospect, views the entire process as
charmed. The clients had never previously built a home, but they were
serial renovators with a solid understanding of the process. They had no
desire to spend money for the sake of it, he says, but also no limits. “They
just wanted to do what was right.”
So today the house is complete. The curving laneway is edged by a
beautiful stone wall, and the arrival is to that most endangered of slickly
modern features, a carport. The furniture inside is sparse and spare.
Munck, a sometime painter, has been considering what kind of art
might go on the concrete walls, but the idea is daunting and for now they
remain unadorned.
Beyond that log-strewn beach the view through the front window is strictly
of rocks, water and trees. The road by suggests that this part of Quadra is
fairly populated, but there is no hint of that here. A small protected island
blocks the sight of other residences in nearby Heriot Bay and vicinity, leaving
the snow-capped Coast Mountains looming in the distance as the primary
visual distraction. As one looks through that window, seven years doesn’t
seem very long at all.

Opposite: Deer are omnipresent throughout
coastal B.C., and their appetites play an
important role in determining landscaping
materials. Here those run strictly to the
indigenous plants found on the site before it
was disturbed (though as little as possible)
during the construction process.
Above: In the Japanese tradition, views
are edited based on what is to be seen and
where it is to be seen from. In bedrooms the
viewing location is almost always the bed,
which led to several windows located at or
near this height.

use the home mostly as a residence, but the
dining table does do occasional double duty
for meetings for Tula Foundation, their
family-funded initiative. The counter seen

is a similar one in the kitchen, in homage to
the logs on the beach.

IN A MODERN HOUSEBOAT ON THE SPREE RIVER,
TWO BERLIN BROTHERS FIND THE PACE OF CITY LIFE
ALTERS WITH EVERY GENTLE SWELL.

THE NEXT BIG WAVE
You can go a whole day on this modern houseboat without seeing another living
being, save for a conga line of ducks emerging from a tangle of reeds. The bay
extends out for a mile, and beyond it the Berlin skyline with its distinctive TV Tower.
Otherwise, the only interlopers are trees.
This view should belong to a much bigger house, the kind of waterfront villa that
would be out of reach for most people in the 21st century. But everything about this
houseboat defies its 650 square feet. For one thing, it sleeps four, with enough room
overhead to literally allow jumping out of bed. The kitchen has an island as long as a car.
And the whole family could sprawl around the wood-burning stove on a nippy evening.
In fact, it’s easy to forget you’re on a boat altogether—until the odd wobble from the
wake of a neighbouring boat rocks you back to reality.
Rummelsburger Bucht, a bay off Berlin’s Spree River, has transformed itself gradually
from an industrial backwater into a residential “water city.” Young creative couples and
trail-blazing families have moved into contemporary houses amid the natural beauty
here, and the marina offers long-term berths to boat owners. So when brothers Chris
and Oliver Laugsch, who run the boutique-hotel website Welcome Beyond, purchased
what they describe as a floating loft after a two-year search, naturally they chose to moor
it at Rummelsburger.
“It was built by a Dutchman from scratch,” says Chris. “He liked to build things, and
when you put that fact together with the Dutch affinity for water, you get this.” With help

Below: At 650 square feet and with only one internal door, the
houseboat has the character of an urban loft. The open-concept
kitchen is simple and spare, with storage to keep all the utilities tucked
away and home-rigged lighting over the polished-concrete island.
“There’s nothing that doesn’t absolutely need to be there,” says Chris.
Right: The boat is equipped with air conditioning and heating, but Chris
and Oliver installed a wood-burning stove for extra warmth and
character. The floor-to-ceiling windows have custom coverings—
shutters on some and mechanical blinds on others.

The rudimentary steel structure was enclosed in
a wood shell, and the ceiling beams were left
bare to emphasize the height. The brothers had
an upholsterer from Berlin cover the sofa and
chaises with a combination of cotton on the top
and water-resistant fabric underneath, so the
cushions can be dragged out to the terrace for
makeshift seating. Two glass discs, cut by a local
glass manufacturer and placed on the ground,
act as side tables for casual dining.

from a boat engineer, the builder started with a catamaran base, then built a shell on top
from wood and steel, and laid a concrete floor. “It’s a relatively light structure—simple
and clean. There’s nothing to distract from the view outside,” notes Chris. “It’s classified
as a boat, it has an engine, but from the look of it, there’s nothing nautical about it.”
Indeed, he rarely moves it from its mooring. “It’s not really built for day tours.”
Most of the furnishings were custom-crafted from the get-go, in light-coloured wood,
polished concrete and a touch of steel. Sharing the builder’s appreciation for
minimalism, Chris and Oliver kept things that way. “Except for a few aspects of colour,
everything is white and grey,” says Chris. “There’s a feeling of space, very light.” All they
brought to the mix were a few side tables, a wall-mounted TV, the wood-burning stove—
and themselves.
The brothers have added the houseboat to their hotel website, so it’s often occupied by
paying guests. But when it’s not, Chris, who moonlights in finance, sets up office from
the Acapulco chair on the deck, taking advantage of the Wi-Fi, which is unusually
superior for this part of Berlin. “Because of the way the terrace points toward the bay, the
whole marina is behind you, so it’s completely private,” says Chris. In fact, there are no
windows at all on the marina side. “The marina is simply gone.”
When Oliver joins his brother, their schedule consists of little except sipping red wine
on the water and cooking simple dinners in the open kitchen. The only caveat is the one
familiar to most homeowners: there’s always something to be done. “When we spend
time together, we usually end up doing little fixes on the boat,” says Chris. “Everyone
relaxes easier if we each come separately.”
Those little fixes include stocking up on supplies, tightening screws and,
unsurprisingly, washing the floor-to-ceiling windows. But for Chris, that represents little
pain in exchange for a lot of gain.
“Being here is like being inside a camera, looking out, and the window is the lens,” he
says. “That’s the most striking feature of the whole boat and the whole setting.”

Above: The only visual connection to the marina is the front door,
which opens onto a public dock.
Right: The bathroom gets fresh water from the marina system, so
it’s highly functional, though, says Chris, “the toilet pump has its
own character.” Oliver, who works as a graphic designer, has an eye
for fun details. He created the pink vertical stripe between the sinks.

SEA WORTHY
In the sphere of architecture, Jim Olson is an auteur. His oeuvre encompasses
soaring spaces, realized with an earthy warmth that tempers their vastness. To the
world, they appear as if screened with an amber filter.
Olson has his roots in the Pacific Northwest, where the big sky and majestic
mountainscape set the bar for scale, and the legacies of modernists like Paul Kirk and
Arthur Erickson loom large. In Seattle, where his firm, Olson Kundig, operates in an
office near the Ferry Terminal, Olson has become a legend in his own right. But his
clients also travel abroad, thus his work has followed them as far as Hong Kong, Hawaii
Above: Apart from a few green “oases” scattered around the
property, the landscape is fairly desert-like. Architect Jim Olson
brought that desert feeling to the structure with sand-coloured stone
and stucco. The sea—seen immediately through the front gate—
plays off it. He kept the spaces wide and vaulted, so nothing would
interfere with the view to the horizon.
Opposite: Dark wood beams complement the simple lines of the
architecture, a nod to the old Spanish aesthetic. A trellis has been laid
over top of the louvres, with the fbres running perpendicular, to
create a soft basket-weave effect. “They’re both textural elements
that are functional, too,” says Olson. The furniture is by Terry Hunziker
for Sutherland, with cushions covered in Ralph Lauren fabric.

ESCAPE LIVING ON THE WATER
Left: Like the sea, the living room—the home’s
zócalo, or central meeting place—is visible from
almost everywhere, including the balcony,
which leads to the guest bedrooms. Olson
designed an extended transom window over
the doorway to heighten the view to the beach.
Below: The travertine marble of the entry foyer
is contrasted by alder-wood elements and long
panels of alder on the trellis. The wood accents
were stained a deep chestnut—a nod to
old-world tradition. The slender iron bars of the
gate are almost invisible from the door, clearing
the view to the tropical setting.

The louvred overhang continues through the main living area, alleviating the verticality
and adding a visual motif. “I like to use large spaces, but then have horizontal layers in
there to break it down,” says Olson. It’s countered by a blackened-steel fireplace
surround, which climbs up the double-height concrete wall to the ceiling. Glass pocket
doors open up the room to the water. Terry Hunziker designed the round games table.

and San José del Cabo, Mexico, the setting for this holiday home by the beach.
The villa, built for a lifelong friend based in Seattle, is unmistakably Olson; its 8,000
square feet radiate a golden hue. “There’s a desert-like climate on the ocean,” says the
architect, “so the materials of the house were intended to have this desert feeling.” Yet
this Baja home is resolutely focused on the Sea of Cortez, which in high tide can come
right up to the threshold of the infinity pool.
To achieve this balance of earth and sea, Olson borrowed the best of the region but also
learned from its mistakes.
“When I first went down there, my client took me around to some more traditional
houses and said, ‘Every time you walk in, you feel like the ceiling is coming down.’ And
it was true—our view of the ocean was blocked. We couldn’t see the sky. She’s a tall
person and that really bothered her.”
Olson was able to remedy that with a characteristically lofty space. Now, from the front
gate to the yawning foyer right through to the back terrace, the horizon is a constant
presence.
The building is a pure expression of Olson-ification, inflected with the argot of the
Mexican coast: dark wood, stone and stucco in sandy tones to blend into the dry
mountain backdrop. For the ceramic-tile roof, mandated by the region’s architectural
heritage body, Olson went with a more contemporary tan rather than the usual red. And
louvres, seen in traditional homes along the length of the coast, are everywhere. “It really
works because you can close all the doors for security and open the louvres,” says Olson.
“People have figured it out over centuries. Modern culture loves to just ignore all that,
but why would you?”
Those were precisely the sentiments of the client. “She wanted to be a good neighbour
and she also wanted a modern house,” says Olson. “This does all the things traditional
houses do—just in a modern vocabulary.”
Olson’s meditations on the home slip naturally into the regional parlance, which is to
be expected for someone who has always endeavoured to place his work within the local
context. When he describes the vaulted living room, he calls it “the zócalo”—the Mexican
term for a public square. “If you think of the house as a little village—with the owner,
her four children, grandchildren and lots of friends—it is this major central space. It
opens completely to the pool and the ocean. It’s warm and air can flow through.” On the
The master bedroom, living room and dining room
all have terraces that face the pool. To shade them
without adding unnecessary weight, Olson
designed wood pergolas to cantilever over the
terraces. “My client had to work hard to convince
me that you really want to be in the shade all the
time there—it’s really hot,” he says. The infinity
pool is lined with glass mosaic tile.

When the pocket doors are open,
the master suite becomes part of
the garden, with barely a break in
the travertine-tile terrace. Having
balconies on all sides, Olson says,
gives the house a more
approachable scale. In keeping with
the overall decor, the walls, flooring
and soft furnishings are in all
shades of tan. The duvet cover was
made from Kravet fabric.
This home is resolutely focused
on the Sea of Cortez, which in
high tide can come right up to
the threshold of the pool.

main floor, the zócalo is flanked by the kitchen and master bedroom; upstairs it’s
overlooked by a balcony off which are the other bedrooms—one with five bunk beds, like
a dorm. “As people retreat to their private spaces, they look down into it,” says Olson.
“When you’re in the pool, you look back at it. When you’re coming from the street, you
walk into it. It’s the focal point of the house.”
The broad horizontal lines and natural palette—as well as the homey, tactile
furnishings by Seattle designer Terry Hunziker—bring the volumes down to earth. Yet
there’s no denying the architect has scaled up here in a way few other architects have on
this coast. The villa extends almost to the edges of the 75-foot lot.
But when you consider the four children, the many more grandchildren and the larger
social circle that congregate here on a continual loop, the girth makes sense. “The big
spaces take on more meaning when you have a big family that occupies the house all the
time,” says Olson.
He should know. He has visited plenty of times while working on a subsequent
project, the JW Marriott in Los Cabos, Olson Kundig’s first hotel in Mexico. However, he
dismisses the idea of making the arrangement more permanent. “I’m too busy to move
down there,” Olson says. “It’s too relaxing!”

For floor plans, see page 94

Jenni Kayne’s attention to detail as a
fashion designer is remarkable. Her fall
2014 collection includes standout pieces such
as a menswear-inspired jumpsuit that is taste-
fully seductive, with its plunging-V neckline
and strategically placed buttons. The D’Orsay
flats, for which she’s best known, strike that
perfect balance between sexy and cool. It’s no
surprise then that Kayne’s home in Los Ange-
les reflects that skill in playing with juxtaposi-
tion—rustic with refined, rough with smooth.
The sprawling space gives a first impression of
casual summer living, but a closer look reveals
meticulously considered design details. In
fashion, Kayne has achieved the holy grail of
“effortless chic,” and the same can be said for
her home design aesthetic. Each room in her
house is elegant, yet comfortable, thanks to her
keen eye, and she’s not afraid to mix natural
materials like salvaged pine and rough oak
with white upholstery and steel-framed doors
to create polished contemporary spaces that are
exceptionally welcoming and livable.

textural wood-grain quality that works well with
the oak-framed doors flanking it. There’s a
precision to this outdoor living space—the

Modern steel-framed doors, though prominent in the
space and eye-catching, are not intrusive; instead, their
grid-like look is a perfect frame for the view of the

lounging chair with a steel base; the rustic wood of a
built-in cabinet and the L-shaped seating area; the round
table with a tripod base of rough-hewn wood. A faded
antique rug adds refinement.

about it; in fact, the ambience encourages intimate dinner parties wherein

98 INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN
First-time visitors to Corus Quay in Toronto are apt to
gawk at the luxuriant five-storey wall of tropical plants
in the lobby. But for the employees at this lakefront office
tower, the impact of the striking green feature transcends its
visual appeal; it was designed to improve indoor air quality
and, as a result, enhance their sense of well-being.
A Canadian innovation that recently celebrated its tenth
anniversary, the concept of a living wall biofilter, also known
as a biowall, was a collaboration between inventor Alan
Darlington and Toronto-based Diamond Schmitt Architects.
Hydroponic plants are grown on a synthetic rooting
membrane, which is incorporated into the mechanical
system of a building. The biowall typically requires an atrium
or skylight setting to maximize natural light, and energy is
conserved by utilizing indoor air—instead of the air outside,
which needs to be heated or cooled, depending on the
season. Water is pumped through hoses behind the wall,
allowing it to drip down to pool at the bottom, and then
pumped up again.
“What is potent about the living wall is that it works on so
many levels,” notes Birgit Siber, a principal at Diamond
Schmitt. It improves humidity and purifies the air. And
because it’s visually compelling, people are drawn to it,
she says. “It helps them recalibrate.” —Dali Castro ©

The view from the future is inspiring, as observed from the new BMW i3 and i8. These groundbreaking examples of modern urban
mobility are engineered to deliver sustainability without compromising luxury, design, or performance. Both cars are powered by the
innovative BMW eDrive technology, channelling the electric battery’s full, uninterrupted torque from a standstill. They utilize carbon fbre
and aluminum to reduce their overall weight and increase aerodynamic effciencies. The i8 is a pure sports car with the effciency of a
compact car. The i3 is the epitome of sustainability, while fully delivering the agile performance you expect from BMW. Wondering what
the future may hold is nowhere near as exciting as experiencing it for yourself today. To learn more, visit BMW-i.ca
