Bell Tolls: Tebow best-suited for Jaguars, not Jets If there were ever a time for some fast-acting offseason Tebowing, Wednesday was it.
Tim Tebow to the New York Jets?

That looms as a recipe for distraction, adding to the big-tent drama that envelopes a team looking to unify its locker room and rebound from a busted Super Bowl mission.

MORE: Tebow trade hits snag

And not because the straight-laced, sideline-praying quarterback can't co-exist with the expletive-laced, sideline-aggressive Rex Ryan. Bet they could connect as competitors.

Yet with the Jets committing to Mark Sanchez as their starting quarterback, giving him a three-year extension with $20.5 million over the next two seasons, bringing in Tebow is not the best alternative.

Tebow ripped through the Jets in a Week 11 victory last season as he wrote his remarkable chapter in Denver Broncos history and led the team from a 1-4 start to a division crown and playoff victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Still, the Jets project Tebow — whose 46.5% completion percentage was worst among NFL starters last season — as an option for a Wildcat offense.

They would do better to sign a conventional backup to Sanchez for an emergency rather than pay seven figures for a changeup option.

Also ponder the Jets locker room, seemingly divided by dissension. Having Tebow on board wouldn't necessarily fix it. Consider the quick reaction on Twitter from cornerback Antonio Cromartie: "We don't need Tebow. We sell out every home game," he posted.

Ouch. Tebow's presence would increase pressure on Sanchez. Sure, handling pressure is part of the job for an NFL quarterback. But imagine the chorus from the pro-Tebow activists — and the back pages of the tabloids — when Sanchez has another slow start or even worse, three picks.

Alas, the need for some Wednesday Tebowing — and not only from Tebow.

Maybe that explains the mid-day drama tied to a contract issue, which suddenly put the Jacksonville Jaguars back into the mix to land the quarterback. The quick turn of events seemed like an answered prayer to keep Tebow out of Gotham City.

Tebowing works?

Jacksonville is the perfect landing spot for Tebow. It's his hometown, and with his legion of Florida Gators followers in tow, he would be showered with adulation.

The Jaguars took a lot of local heat for passing on Tebow in the draft two years ago, then more criticism when he blossomed as an impact player last season. New Jaguars owner Shahid Khan said recently that, had he controlled the franchise in 2010, he would have bought in and drafted Tebow.

Now the Jaguars might have a chance to make amends. Peyton Manning talked about "organizational fit" as a key element in picking a new team.

Well, it seems to apply to Tebow and the Jaguars — who could use a marquee player to go along with sensational running back Maurice Jones-Drew.

With Tebow, they can remove the tarp covering the thousands of seats at EverBank Field and sell the place out.

But this isn't merely about the franchise value. Tebow would have a shot to win the starting job from Blaine Gabbert, who had a rough rookie transition last season, and perhaps develop into the best that he can become.

Besides, he wants to play in Florida again. That has to be worth something.

Just like Tebowing.
