JAPANESE HOT SPRINGS
Japan, with about 70% of its land covered by mountains, is blessed with thermal hot springs or in Japanese, “onsen.” Over 3,000 hot spring areas are found around the country, ranging from large resorts to small groups of inns isolated in the mountains. On this list are 20 hot springs that JNTO selected for their authentic “onsen” atmosphere, convenience of transportation, and facilities for overseas guests.

When you stay at any one of the 14 ryokans, which are members of “Wafu Mura”, you can buy a pass for ¥1,000. If the person holding the pass goes to more than five of these ryokans’ hotsprings, they can get Japanese

Ogamakako with its beautiful emerald-green surface, represents Zao with its superb scenic spot. During the summer, Zao is a treasure house of alpine flora. Ogama is famous as one of the sources of Nozawa’s hot springs. The water that gushes from it is too hot to bathe in, so local people make use of it in other ways. You can watch them gather around to boil vegetables and eggs in the geothermally-heated waters! From spring to autumn, you can also go hiking at Uenoharakogen’s hiking course. 3. Facing the picturesque Kinko Bay, the area is filled with a tropical atmosphere. Ikeda-ko, biggest lake in Kyushu. 360° of panoramic view can be seen at Nagasaki-Bana and Mt. Kaimon.
