AT A GLANCE

Elizabeth City Area, North Carolina
A QUICK, COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW OF WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT THE COMMUNITY
Named among the best small towns in America and one of the best places to live on the East Coast by Money Magazine, the Elizabeth City area is quaint and scenic, yet progressive and dynamic. Most of all, it’s welcoming. The friendliness of its people have earned it the nickname “Harbor of Hospitality.” WATERFRONT COMMUNITY Located on the Pasquotank River and Intracoastal Waterway, Elizabeth City has long been tied to its waterfront. Once a major international seaport, today the city’s “Rose Buddies” waterfront ambassadors welcome visitors who arrive by boat to take advantage of 48 hours of free boat dockage and all the area has to offer. Serene sunrise views over water transition to the city’s picturesque downtown district, where neat blocks of historic buildings filled with interesting shops, restaurants and arts attractions give way to pretty, tree-lined residential streets with sidewalks for strolling. The area also includes historical markers that are part of Elizabeth City’s Civil War Trails, which detail the events that took place in the city from 1862 to 1863. BASE OF THE ECONOMY Elizabeth City is home to five major commands of the U.S. Coast Guard, the area’s largest employer. Mostly as a result of the base, the city also has various companies that supply it, including several that contribute to the area’s thriving aviation industry. Health care and higher education institutions are also important employers here, including northeastern North Carolina’s regional medical center, Albemarle Hospital, as well as Elizabeth City State University, College of the Albemarle and Mid-Atlantic Christian University.

ART of it All

ARTS EVENTS INSPIRE ENTREPRENEURS, UNITE RESIDENTS

lizabeth City’s commitment to the arts has expanded greatly in recent years. The growing presence of creative businesses and arts-related events encourages entrepreneurial growth and brings the community together. The area’s burgeoning event and festival schedule also brings in tourists — by boat and car.
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS Charlotte Underwood of the Elizabeth City Convention & Visitors Bureau explains that the motto “Elizabeth City H.A.S. It” uses the acronym to emphasize the anchors of history, arts and science. The history and science aspects are represented by the city’s excellent museums. The arts side stems from the work of Arts of the Albemarle, the nonprofit arts council that encourages the growth of the arts locally. Arts of the Albemarle is also the name of the organization’s space within the Lowry-Chesson Building, a former department store. The first-floor Jacquelin Jenkins gallery showcases and sells artists’ works. The second-story Maguire Theatre is home to the Center Players children’s theater company and the community-based Encore Theatre. And at the top of the building is a dedicated school for the arts, offering a wide variety of classes for all ages.

Arts of the Albemarle, home to art galleries, a theater and a school, helped create the First Friday Art Walk.

AOA has been instrumental in developing the First Friday Art Walk, says AOA Executive Director Rhonda Twiddy. Two years in, the Art Walk downtown stretches from Arts of the Albemarle to the historic Shoppes at the Southern Hotel, anchored by Serenity Arts Studio. During the Art Walk, restaurants stay open longer, local musicians play, and residents can explore and interact at about a dozen participating businesses. Courtney Birdsall owns Serenity, the open community arts studio, offering painting, pottery and jewelry classes to kids and adults, and selling works by local artists. Birdsall also serves as market coordinator for the Downtown Waterfront Market, a combined farmers and crafts market each Saturday morning from May to October, which includes a market kid’s club with farm-related crafts. Sally Sharber, owner of Spoonful of Sugar bakery, is similar to Birdsall in exemplifying the way these events promote small business growth. After being downsized from her former job,

Sharber took her grandmother’s cookie recipe and built a reputation as a baker at the Downtown Waterfront Market. That success led to a brick-and-mortar bakery in the Shoppes at the Southern Hotel, and now she hosts artists herself at the Art Walk. EVENTS AND FESTIVALS A collection of public festivals adds to the positive vibe. The Mariners’ Wharf Film Festival invites families to bring chairs and enjoy classic films outdoors in June and July. Music on the Green, in conjunction with the festival, provides a full schedule of local musicians at Mariners’ Wharf on Tuesday nights, July through September. For 12 years, a large and remarkable Juneteenth celebration at Waterfront Park has commemorated the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, with celebrity guests like Clifton Davis, a charity golf tournament, and a festival of ethnic foods, games and entertainment – all underlining the area’s diversity. A few festivals began well

beyond recent memory. Now run by Elizabeth City Downtown Inc., the North Carolina Potato Festival dates back to 1940, and features about 100 vendors, live music and entertainment, boat rides, games, contests, fireworks, arts and crafts, and good food. Elizabeth City’s arts community both inspires new businesses and brings out the community for festive events that welcome residents and visitors alike – contributing to robust community spirit and a thriving downtown.

ELIZABETH CITY’S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE COAST GUARD RUNS DEEP AND WIDE

E

lizabeth City is home to the country’s largest population of Coast Guard personnel. Support Center Elizabeth City has five major U.S. Coast Guard commands, providing naval and aviation services. From generating tax revenue to supporting local businesses, the USCG’s financial impact on the area is incalculable. But the relationship between Coast Guardsmen and Elizabeth City is deeper than just financial.
Grubb says the small-town vibe is complemented by some really attractive destinations nearby. “You’re still close enough to the big areas to take that drive up to Virginia Beach, or [south to] the Outer Banks. We’re just lucky to be here,” he says. Navy brat Amy Alcocer has lived and breathed the military and the USCG her whole life, and has lived in Elizabeth City for more than 20 years. She’s got more military personnel in her family than she

FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS Chief Warrant Officer 2 Darren Grubb, a human resources expert for the Coast Guard, says Guardsmen stationed in Elizabeth City are lucky. “It’s got that small-town atmosphere, where you can go in just about any establishment here and you see anywhere from three to five people who you know,” Grubb says. “A 10-minute shopping spree turns into about an hour because you see so many friends in this town.”

can count, and was a Coast Guard spouse for four years. As the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce’s membership director and events coordinator, part of her job is building connections. She says the USCG is at the heart of the community. “Supporting the Coast Guard is really a team effort. Each year it gets bigger. The military powers our economy by having such a presence in the area,” Alcocer says. “They’re [also] out there fighting and doing for us what needs to be done. And we just try to give back how we can.” COAST GUARD WEEK One of the ways the chamber and community as a whole give back is through a special week dedicated to saying thank you to local service men and women. All week there are special discounts and offers for Coast Guard and other members of the military at local restaurants, shops and attractions. The area chamber of commerce hosts a concert that’s open to the public and honors all local military.

“It’s a way to give back and raise awareness. This special week of events opens everyone’s eyes that [military members] are in this area and are appreciated. And it gives our members a chance to give back,” Alcocer says. THE COAST GUARD GIVES BACK Grubb says he’s personally felt the support of his community over and over, from being thanked for his service when he’s in uniform to enjoying the annual Coast Guard week festivities. Support from the community makes Guardsmen want to invest time in the community. “We do a lot of volunteering around the area, at local schools where our guys will go in and read to classes, or help them with their homework. And there [are] a lot of other things the Coasties do around the area,” Grubb says. It’s this mutual respect and shared sense of community that drives the relationship between the Harbor of Hospitality and those who guard it.

“[We have] that small-town atmosphere, where you can go in just about any establishment here and you see anywhere from three to five people who you know. A 10-minute shopping spree turns into about an hour because you see so many friends in this town.”

BUSINESSES BENEFIT AS AREA ATTRACTS WEDDINGS

H

ere Comes the Bride is a familiar refrain in Elizabeth City. Called the Harbor of Hospitality, this coastal town is emerging as a popular wedding destination among brides- and grooms-to-be.
“Elizabeth City offers beautiful scenic areas that capture the attractiveness of the small-town experience,” says Makitta Whitehurst-McLean, owner of Created By Him-Entrusted By You Designs, a full-service wedding and special event planning business in nearby Hertford. “There are a lot of nooks and crannies that are breathtaking and stunning. From the grounds of Montero’s Restaurant to the Maguire Theatre in the Arts of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City offers various intimate settings for a couple to have the wedding of their dreams.” LOCAL WEDDING VENUES Other local wedding sites include the Museum of the Albemarle, The Pines Golf Club and the waterfront. “We are a Southern community with beautiful still waters as our backdrop and Carolina blue skies hanging overhead,” says Sandra Sutton, owner of The Bridal Lounge Inc. “Sailboats floating by are great accents to a bride’s outdoor pictures, and photographers who partner with The Bridal Lounge provide photos that allow brides to cherish the moment forever. And if that is not enough, the Outer Banks is just a short car ride away.”

“Southern hospitality is not just a cliche or slogan – it’s our motto. It’s what you see when visiting this town. We drive with one hand and wave at folks with the other hand. That same concept shines through in our businesses.”
SANDRA SUTTON, OWNER OF THE BRIDAL LOUNGE

Louisa’s Bridal offers wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, tuxedos, and prom and cocktail attire.

The Bridal Lounge , a wedding resource boutique, connects brides and grooms with vendors.

The Bridal Lounge provides planning and consultation, tips for brides, a wedding resource library, and linen and tuxedo rentals. “Brides can also chat with beauty consultants who will help bring the vision of how they’d like to look when they walk down the aisle to life, all while sipping lemonade or sweet tea,” Sutton says. Top Knotch Wedding & Event Planning and Louisa’s Bridal also cater to brides and grooms. Louisa’s Bridal carries tuxedos and bridal and formal gowns and performs alterations, while Top Knotch’s planning and coordination services take the stress out of weddings. “I enjoy meeting new people, helping my clients turn their dream event into reality, and making sure the special event is enjoyed by my clients and their guests from beginning to end,” says Robin Foreman, owner of Top Knotch.

HARBOR OF HOSPITALITY One reason Elizabeth City is able to pull off so many successful weddings is the support local businesses give one another. “As a decorator and coordinator, I have worked with many businesses in the community, including photographers, caterers and reception venues,” WhitehurstMcLean says. “Every one of them has been very helpful in making sure the needs of the clients were met. Offering an exceptional experience for the bride and groom can provide future bookings for all the vendors involved.” Sutton agrees. “Southern hospitality is not just a cliché or slogan – it’s our motto,” she says. “It’s what you see when visiting this town. We drive with one hand and wave at folks with the other hand. That same concept shines through in our businesses.”
