President’s Report
By: R. Dennis Callahan
Well; where did the time go? Here it is almost March, St. Paddy’s day is near and spring is normally around the corner but since we really haven’t had a winter this year, it could get interesting, at least weather-wise, for the next month and a half. Thanks to everyone who attended the February Luncheon meeting, we had another great turnout. Mr. Mark Girgenti from Burt Process Equipment gave a very informative presentation on Rainwater Reclamation. It is with sincere regret that the Board has accepted Eric Rogers resignation as the V.P. Technical of the St. Louis Chapter of ASPE for professional and personal reasons, effective immediately. We thank him for serving on our Board for the past 21/2 years and hope to see him at future meetings. Paul Hellickson has volunteered to move up into the VP Technical Board position as of June of this year and will finish Eric’s term of office. I will be writing the newsletter Technical reports for the rest of the 2011-2012 year. Randy Kleinheider has volunteered to fill Paul’s old position as VP Legislative starting in June of this year and will finish Paul’s term of office. It was brought up to my attention at last month’s meeting that many of you have not been receiving your CEU’s, PEU’s and PDH’s for attending our meetings. The Board is working on this and we will begin issuing the certificates as soon as possible. The 2012 ASPE Convention and EPE will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina from th st October 27 to the 31 . As an incentive to our members the board has decided to send one of our members as a delegate and reimburse that person for their registration, airfare and lodging. We will select that member based on how many general chapter meetings they attend from January thru May of 2012. We will then pick from the ones who have attended the most meetings. ASPE Illustrated Plumbing Codes Design Handbooks. Please remember to register at the sign in table before each meeting for your chance to win one of four copies of this book. The 2012 Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) exam will be held on Thursday April 19 th th and Friday April 20 with registration already opened. You will have until March 19 to complete the registration process so just go to ASPE.org for more details or contact Stacey A. Kidd with any questions that you may have. Also, ASPE as a supplement to your studies for the exam is rebroadcasting the four-part CPD review webinar series. If you purchase the entire series by March 29, you will receive a free copy of the CPD Review Manual (a $50 member value). Participants will be able to interact with the presenter through a dedicated blog site.

VP Technical Report
By: R. Dennis Callahan
Our speaker last month was Mark Girgenti, lead sales and design engineer from Burt Process Equipment, speaking on Rainwater Reclamation. Some of the highlights are as follows: Why recycle Rainwater? 99.7% of existing water is locked in oceans, ice and the atmosphere. Due to the increasing demand and decreasing supply of accessible water sources, many traditional methods are becoming increasingly impractical (wells, desalination, etc.). Harvesting rainwater is cost-effective and energy-efficient. We recycle for use primarily in non-potable water demands with some potable applications (depending upon location). Non-Potable Demands Include: Building washing/power washing, cooling towers, fire suppression, household cleaning, laundry washing, pool/pond filling, toilet flushing and vehicle washing. Potable Demands Include: Drinking water, cooking, bathing and dish washing. The Anatomy of the Rainwater Harvesting Process: Catchment surface (roof, parking lot, natural pond). Conveyance = (gutters, downspouts and vortex filtration). Storage = (Cistern). Treatment systems = Filtration, sanitization and clean water storage, booster pump distribution and additional treatment based on water source. Sizing Calculations: Supply (in gallons) = feet of rainfall x .62 x catchment area (walls) are multiplied by 0.5. In addition to the above, the supply is multiplied by any losses due to catchment surface filtration. Common Roof Treatment Includes: First flush devices, gutter guards, and siphonic water filters. Determining the Amount of Rain Fall Available: Use at least 7 Plus years of monthly data to determine your rainwater density. A good reference is: www.worldclimate.com. Common Materials of the Cistern Include: Thermoplastics (best for indoor use), fiberglass (best for underground burial), concrete and metal (not

VP Legislative Report
By: Paul Hellickson
First things first. I want to publically thank my friend and colleague Eric Rogers for his dedication to this local chapter and to ASPE national. As one of the board members, Eric believed that this Society was about its members and he pushed every day to make it something that would be a benefit to all of us and to do his part in making this an organization that people could respect and trust. I wish him well in his future endeavors. The International Code Council is looking for public comments and proposals on Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities. The ICC (ASC A117) Consensus Committee on Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities will be developing the next edition of the ICC A117.1 standard. If you have suggested revisions or additions to the ICC A117.1-09 standard, go to: http://www.iccsafe.org/cs/standards/A117/Pages/default.aspx Online registration is open for the ICC’s Group A Code Development Hearings, April 28-May 6 in Dallas. Hearing participants will consider proposed code changes to the International Building, Fuel Gas, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Private Sewage Disposal Codes. If interested in attending please send me an email - [email protected]

With the Spring like weather outside, I know everyone is itching to hit the links. Our annual golf tournament is only 3 months away. I hope that everyone is planning their teams. It was mentioned at the last meeting that data books were sent out. Please let me know if you did not receive yours or if you have any issues with it. Please remember that any potential members may attend next month meeting and enjoy a great lunch for free!! Please invite your colleagues to the next meeting. I ask again, if there is anything we can do to make this a better organization for you please let us know.

recommended) and wood (best for outside use and small applications).

Cistern Sizing: Two thoughts; Minimum size (for the volume to equal a two day supply of daily water requirements) and maximum size (sized for the volume of water required to meet the water requirements over the longest drought period). If you undersize the system, it will lead to waste of collected rainfall and more city water use. Over sizing leads to stagnation and increased project cost. Water Demand Sizing: The majority of non-residential rainwater systems are designed to feed three main non-potable water demands; flushing fixtures, irrigation and cooling towers. Using rainwater for industrial use, lab use and especially cooling towers can be difficult. Generally speaking, these water demands will use water volumes in excess of what can be collected with rainwater in addition to other reclaimed water sources. Mark ended his presentation by answering some questions and received a nice round of applause. We had planned on having a factory tour for our March meeting but with everything else going on this past month, we were not able to agree on a specific date. So, the upcoming Tuesday March 6, 2012 meeting will be on Condensing Hot Water Heaters. Our retired Past President Mr. Don Behrmann P. E. has graciously offered to present this program to our members on such a short notice. Our April 3, 2012 meeting will be on “Hydro Mechanical versus gravity grease interceptors” and will be presented by Rand Ackroyd the Executive Director of the Plumbing and Drainage Institute. Eric and I attended his presentation at the 2011 symposium in Orlando and it was very informative, please plan on attending this outstanding program. If anyone has some suggestions for future programs, please contact me or any of our board members.

On a national note; ASPE has announced that as of the March issue, Plumbing Engineer Magazine will now be the official publication of ASPE. ASPE has also mentioned that the Continuing Education from PS&D will be continued at ASPE.org. Starting in March, the continuing education quizzes formerly published in PS&D will be re-launched at ASPE.Org as “Read, Learn, and Earn”. All of the benefits of obtaining quick CEU’s via a 12-question multiple-choice quiz will still be available. More details can be found in the “ASPE Report” section of the March Plumbing Engineer, which all ASPE members will receive for free as a member benefit. Our next meeting is March 6th at the Engineers Club. Hope to see you all then. Please remember to RSVP to Mike Todd, and bring a friend along!
