Mrs. Needham

Coming-of-Age Isaac Lawson is a sixteen-year-old young boy who is being forced to grow up fast. Isaac is an average young boy who loves playing baseball over the summer. However, Isaac decides it is time to go to work and lands a job at Chum’s Hardware store. After all of his friends were traveling and playing baseball, Isaac was completely alone. The loss of his mother nearly a year earlier, forced Isaac to grow up fast. During the course of working at Chum’s, Isaac learns how dark the world is and faces tough decisions trying to understand where he belongs. Isaac is faced with the tough decision of what is ethical or what is the norm.

After losing his mother, Isaac feels alone. His mother was always in control of the family and helped guide the family in the right direction (11). Isaac knows that his father is taking steps toward moving on from his wife’s death. Isaac’s dad is a local pastor that is well known and is much respected in their small town. Isaac is not use to not doing everything that they did when his mother was alive. Isaac feels at first that he and his dad are not a real type of family without his mother. His dad explains to him that they do have a family. He explains how

they have a church family and the entire community is a family. Within that family his dad believes that they should give back and share (14). Isaac learns to adapt to the way things are and accept them. This signifies that Isaac is maturing and realizing to accept what life gives him and do the best with what he has. Although Isaac has been forced to grow up faster than most, he is learning valuable lessons from the unfortunate events that has happened in his life. The fact that Isaac is able to be open to the new changes and new challenges of life, proves he is a step closer to becoming a man.

When Isaac first catches wind of the reward offered to find the men who are burning down houses, all he is concerned with is the $5,000 reward for catching them. This ultimately motivates Isaac to do all he can to catch the people responsible for such corruption. Isaac states, “If I got that reward money, maybe things would look up” (12). He is focused on how money might change how he feels when in reality, material things will not be sufficient to make him feel better. As the story unravels, Isaac finally figures out his friend Eddie has a part in the vandilisms. When confronted by the chief, Issac states, “I don’t want the money, I won’t do anything to hurt Eddie” (201). Isaac realizes that the friendship with Eddie means more to him than collecting the reward offered by P.O.T.S. This signifies how Isaac has grown to realize what really means the most in life. This is a big step in his journey of becoming a man.

Isaac has been forced to grow up faster than most kids his age. While all of his friends are off enjoying their summer playing baseball, traveling, and being kids, Isaac takes the initive to go get a job. This is a decision that helps him tremendously to grow into a man. Isaac learns how to appreciate the finer things in life such as friendship. Isaac still has some growing up to do and many more things to learn but he is well on his way to becoming a man.
