From the Middle School Office
Dear Parents:

Weekly Publication for Middle School Parents

ISSUE # 21
WEEK OF JANUARY 25 TO 29, 2010

We enjoyed meeting and talking to the parents who attended the Morning Coffee this past Thursday. Two weeks from now on Saturday, February 6 is the Family Fun Day and we hope more parents will come out and participate in the day’s event. Please mark your calendars! Next week we will be celebrating Readers’ Week around the theme A Banquet of Books. A number of activities have been planned and we encourage all students to get involved. Reading opens up doors and is a fantastic way to learn about people, relationships and the world. For one activity we will request all students on a daily basis to drop everything and read. If your child doesn’t have a book on hand or is looking for something new to read, encourage your child to visit the MSMC to get some ideas. Please note that the CWW (Classroom Without Walls) Information Session on February 3 has been cancelled. Detailed information will be sent home through your child’s Homebase. Please be advised that we have been notified of a small number of children in Grade 6 who have recently suffered from head lice. Lice prefer to live in clean, well kept hair and we are all susceptible to getting them, especially in a setting such as this where there are many children in close contact. We recommend that you check your child’s head thoroughly and, if you find any live head lice, buy one of the many preparations available from any mainstream pharmacy to eradicate them. (Ask you pharmacist for advice.) Follow the instructions on the container and ensure that all family members are treated. You need to thoroughly wash any soft furnishings, e.g. bedding, cushion covers, hats or even helmets. Soft toys should also be put into plastic bags for a week and then washed thoroughly. Please continue to inspect your child’s hair on a daily basis until no live lice can be detected and then reduce the inspections to every 3 days. If no more lice are detected, you can continue with one inspection every week. This is recommended for all school children, particularly of elementary school age. You will need to use a very fine toothed comb and part the hair into sections, examining each section thoroughly before moving on. Regular, thorough combing through the hair using plenty of conditioner may help to prevent lice eggs holding on to the hair and prevent an infestation but an existing infestation will require pharmaceutical treatment. Your child can continue to come to school after the initial treatment as head lice are an inconvenience more than a health risk. With correct treatment, your child should be free of the problem soon. If you have any questions or would like further advice, please do not hesitate to contact the clinic. Sincerely, Danielle Fredericks Middle School Principal Clarissa Sayson Middle School Assistant Principal

A reminder to all parents regarding the previously sent letter for the implementation of web online billing statement.
November 3, 2009 TO: All Parents SUBJECT: ONLINE VIEWING OF BILLING STATEMENT Greetings! In line with our continuous effort to improve our systems at International School Manila, Inc (ISM), we wish to inform you that the ONLINE WEB viewing of your children’s tuition and other fees will be available before the end of November, 2009. We have recently introduced this to the companies sponsoring students at ISM and the feedback was generally positive. This system will provide you up-to-date billing statements as we will have daily updates from our backend computerized system. With this implementation, we will no longer send billing statements via courier. The billing statement that accompanies this letter is the last hard copy that you will receive from us. We will, however, continue to send email billing alerts before the start of each semester and at certain times within a semester. Please update your email addresses for this purpose. For parents with middle school and high school students, you can access this system using your PowerSchool user id and password. For those who only have elementary students, attached is a sheet which shows your user id and password. We likewise attach the user manual which details out the procedures on how to access the system. You may call Rhodora Villa or Marissa S. Dulay at 840-85-06 or you may call me at 840-85-02 for questions or clarification. Thank you for your continued cooperation and support. Sincerely yours, Signed Juris A. Lallana Director of Finance & Administration

American & Canadian ISM families: This week, you received an email from the PTA office about the International Family Fun Day (IFFD) taking place at the school on Saturday, February 6th. It is a significant event in the school calendar and a charitable fundraiser. One of the key aspects of the day is the international food fair during which each country (in this case, Canada and the US combined) are asked to prepare food for 250 people. We are asking that each American and Canadian family contribute Php 500 to pay for the food that we will be serving from our booth. We have opened an account in the Cashier’s Office and are asking that you deposit your contribution at the Cashier by Thursday, January 28th so that we have adequate time to purchase the food. Please tell the cashier that you are making a deposit for the “American & Canadian Food Booth.”

Calling all ISM Parents & Teachers!!!
International Family Fun Day - ISM's annual PTA-organized event to bring an afternoon of FUN, entertainment, and an incredible international array of food to all ISM families and faculty - is set for Saturday, February 6th, 2-6 pm on the MS Field. To make the event a success (and help ISM's Community Service efforts), we need MANY volunteers willing to donate just one to two hours of their time for what really is a fun and memorable afternoon. And the first 50 volunteers who sign up will be given a special Family Fun Day tee-shirt to commemorate the special day! Helping out is even more fun since as a volunteer you'll be an active part of the memorable day - selling items at the onsite "Sari-Sari" store or coupons so that kids can enjoy games and yummy treats! Bring your family, volunteer one hour, and then spend the rest of the time enjoying all that Family Fun Day has to offer! Please consider volunteering for Family Fun Day - we need YOU to make this a great day - and contact Janice Powell ([email protected]), 0916-357-7720 or Sonali Hutchison ([email protected]) to sign up to volunteer or for more info. Thank you!!!!! "

A Symbolic Journey 2009
There is a new mural hanging outside of the middle school office, so please go and check it out. The fifth and sixth grade art students researched the style of the Australian Aboriginals, created a personal symbolic life map and painted it on a small board. These small boards all fit together in a large puzzle, unified by a pictograph painted in black. The overlying image is a student generated representation of the rain and flooding of Typhoon Ondoy, the devastation that it brought, and the proactive way that our community came together to help others. Using the art elements of line, shape, and colour and the design principles of pattern, rhythm, and balance; the structure is a true collaboration of art history and contemporary self-expression. Please enjoy! For more information about the mural and for other student art work: please go to www.easysite.com/artitude. Ms. Morgan Jacobs Grade 5/6 Art Teacher
