Dear Parents:

Weekly Publication for Middle School Parents

ISSUE # 25
WEEK OF FEBRUARY 22 TO 26, 2010

This week has been an eye-opening, mind-broadening experience for the Middle School students. As they return from their Classroom Without Walls (CWW) trips, we hope the memories will live on and motivate the students to think more carefully about how they can contribute to the community. Our students have a wealth of talents and energy, and we encourage them to commit to sharing their time with others in need. We thank all the teachers for their dedication and efforts to provide a range of enriching experiences for the students. It was a week well spent! Please take some time to engage your child and discuss ways that your child can build on the experience. It’s important that the learning does not end with the conclusion of the CWW week but that the spirit of service continues to be nurtured. For parents of Grade 8 students there is a meeting regarding the Transition to High School on February 23 from 5:30 – 6:30 P.M. in the Little Theater. High School Guidance will be presenting useful information and we encourage you to attend. This week during assembly your child will hear about course offerings for next school year. Starting on Monday, March 1st, course registration will begin and will be completed by Friday, March 5th. Please discuss with your child the elective choices in which they have an interest. If you have any questions about course choices, please talk to either Ms. Katz or Mr. St. Laurent in MS Guidance. Please be reminded that there are no classes on Monday, February 22 in honor of the Edsa Revolution. Classes resume on Tuesday, February 23. Please note that the Parent Coffee on February 25 has been postponed until March 9. More details to follow. Have a relaxing weekend! Sincerely, Danielle Fredericks Middle School Principal Clarissa Sayson Middle School Assistant Principal

A Very Mild Case of Measles in Grade 5
Dear Parents: There has been one confirmed case of measles in Grade 5. The child has a very mild case of measles and, as all children should have been vaccinated against measles, we would expect any further cases also to be mild. Symptoms were recognized earlier in the week the child was sent home. This reduces the possibility of the illness spreading amongst the other children. We do not expect an outbreak of measles in school but we would like to advise you of the following information as a precaution. What is Measles? Measles, also called rubeola, is a highly contagious respiratory infection that's caused by a virus. It causes a total-body skin rash and flu-like symptoms, including a fever, cough, and runny nose. Since measles is caused by a virus, there is no specific medical treatment and the virus has to run its course. But a child who is sick should be sure to receive plenty of fluids and rest, and be kept from spreading the infection to others. Signs and Symptoms While measles is probably best known for the full-body rash it causes, the first symptoms of the infection are usually a hacking cough, runny nose, high fever, and red eyes. A characteristic marker of measles is Koplik's spots, small red spots with blue-white centers that appear inside the mouth. The measles body rash typically has a red or reddish brown blotchy appearance, and first usually shows up on the forehead, then spreads downward over the face, neck, and body, then down to the arms and feet. How does measles spread? Measles is spread when someone comes in direct contact with infected droplets or when someone with measles sneezes or coughs and spreads virus droplets through the air. A person with measles is contagious from 1 to 2 days before symptoms start until about 4 days after the rash appears. If you suspect that you child is displaying signs and symptoms of measles, please ring your doctor for advise. Please do not bring you child to school or take them to the doctor’s surgery without first talking to the doctor. If you have any further questions or would like more information, please feel free to contact the school clinic or your pediatrician. Sincerely,

Danielle Fredericks Middle School Principal

From the Board of Trustees
22 February 2010 Dear Parents: First of all, we would like to thank you for your continuing support of International School Manila, Inc. (the ‘Corporation’). The Corporation is a non-stock, non-profit membership organization whose business, property, and affairs are managed by a Board of Trustees consisting of ten (10) Members. Our By-laws give you a central role in the governance of the Corporation, with five of the ten Board seats being allocated to Associate Members. This year, there will be two (2) vacancies from the rank of Associate Membership. With this in mind, we seek your nominations for these posts, which must be submitted to the Corporate Secretary (at Room P089, Administration Office, ISM Campus) on or before 08 April 2010. All Associate Member candidates, who are members in good standing, will be interviewed by the Committee on Trustees, and those whose skill-sets and profiles best meet the needs of the School will be endorsed to the community for election. Voting may be done in advance of, or at, the Annual General Meeting (AGM). From 11 May to 19 May 2010, a ballot box will be established in the administrative office area near the Corporate Secretary’s office for those who wish to vote in advance of the AGM. Proxy Forms which you submitted at the beginning of this year (enclosed in your Enrollment Packet) will be used solely for attendance purposes and to determine presence of quorum at the AGM, and cannot be used to vote. The AGM will be held on 20 May 2010 in the Fine Arts Theater, and members of the community who have not voted should cast their ballots at that meeting. Results will be announced as soon as the assigned auditing firm has concluded the count. Prospective candidates for the Board should read the attached nomination and election procedure and guidelines in full. The nomination and election procedure and guidelines may also be viewed at the ISM website (www.ismanila.org). THE COMMITTEE ON TRUSTEES Board of Trustees
