ABSTRACT

: Mr. Duminda T Wijesinghe

The human being, give foremost importance to our daily life. It plays a unique role as a part of
the household and a restaurant. In this hasty era use of LPG in kitchen has increased immensely.
Though there are positive features in this gas, there are negative elements as well, because this
LPG is highly inflammable. As such any unfortunate leakage is lethal. An average man cannot
perceive this leakage. This is a program to overcome this kind of situation. The concept of this
GSM based secured kitchen is to mitigate the risks.
This automatic program is created with GSM auto dialer and some other electronic devices. Four
kinds of electronic devices used in this process, MQ6 sensor, Microcontroller, GSM Auto dialer
and buzzer.

MQ6 sensor will sense the LPG leakage and transmit the message to

microcontroller. The Microcontroller in turn will pass the same to GSM auto dialer and the
buzzer will also transmit the signal. On the basis of message received GSM auto dialer will
automatically dial the telephone numbers registered with it and it will also transmit SMS as well.
The Buzzer will also make an alarm signal. While these electronic devices exchange message to
the people who will also receive alarm signal and SMA will rush to the scene and they will be
able to prevent the further gas leakage by acting expeditiously. The other feature in this process
is that it could be managed easily Telephone number registered in the Auto dialer could be
transformed into SMS. A device called Admin phone is used for this purpose. This program is
created by these kinds of features.
Household and guests will be able to get better service by introducing this program. This process
is a guaranteed program to supervise and control the gas leakage. This will certainly upgrade the
standard of this process. A special feature in this process is that the gas leakage could be detected
easily and the resulting risks could be minimized through telephone call, SMS alarm signal etc.
We wish you to remind the necessity and urgency ‘to be prepared before it happens’

INTRODUCTION
The MQ6 gas sensor detects the gas vapours at 10%, 20% or 30% of the concentration required
for an explosion (LEL or Lower Explosive Limit). The desired sensitivity can be selected from
the front panel and stored in the non-volatile memory. When activated, the MQ6 built-in 85 dB
alarm will sound and make call to the stored cell number.
The alarm will continue to sound as long as the sensor detects a dangerous concentration of gas
vapor or until the reset button is pressed. If the alarm is silenced by the use of the reset button,
the MQ6 will automatically sound the alarm again as soon as the gas vapor has subsided.
This project is microcontroller based project. MQ6 sensor will sense the LPG leakage and
transmit the message to microcontroller. This unit detects 300 to 5000ppm of Natural Gas and it
is ideal to detect dangerous gas leaks in the kitchen. Sensor can be easily configured as an alarm
unit. The sensor can also sense LPG and Coal Gas. Ideal sensor is used to detect the presence of
a dangerous LPG leak in a car or in a service station, storage tank environment. This unit can be
easily incorporated into an alarm unit, to sound an alarm or give a visual indication of the LPG
concentration. The sensor has excellent sensitivity combined with a quick response time. If gas is
detected, calls are made by the device to authorized persons or numbers assigned to the device.
In this project there are mainly two units, auto dialler and microcontroller unit. Auto dialler
Telephone is used to call authorized persons configured by standard programming of the
telephone unit. Depending upon the Gas sensor output, microcontroller can call to the authorized
person and an alarm will start to warn the people around or near there.
The concept of this GSM based secured kitchen is to mitigate the risks. This system will detect
any chances for a gas leakage from cylinder-based appliance (e.g. LPG cylinder). Usually fire
occurs in a cylinder- based appliance due to leakage of gas through the gas pipeline. By using a
gas sensor, the above reason can be detected in advance. With the use of an alarming system the
user can be alerted about this. If the user is in a remote place, GSM technology can be
incorporated to alert the user. And GSM modem performs an auto dial to a user.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Upon the completion, a Gas sensor is used to detect dangerous gas leaks in the kitchen or near
the gas heater. Sensor can be easily configured as an alarm unit. The sensor can also sense LPG
and Coal Gas. Ideal sensor is used to detect the presence of a dangerous LPG leak in a car or in a
service station, storage tank environment. This unit can be easily incorporated into an alarm unit,
to sound an alarm or give a visual indication of the LPG concentration. The sensor has excellent
sensitivity combined with a quick response time. If gas is detected, calls are made by the device
to authorized persons or numbers assigned to the device.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW
Here our main focus is to make usage of LPG convenient and all the more safer. Sometimes
when we light our gas or stove using LPG, we forget to turn off the regulator when the gas or
stove is not in use. Thus LPG without igniting will spread in the entire household. As LPG has
very low ignition temperature and very high calorific value, it catches fire very easily. This may
lead to lots of damage of property and life. The solution to the problem is the LPG gas control
device.

BLOCK DIAGRAM
Below given figure shows the block diagrams of the GSM Based Secured Kitchen. This system
has implemented using microcontroller, MQ-6 Sensor, Auto Dialer and Buzzer. Designing is
usually done by analyzing the requirement. It includes stability, modularity and cost. So
designing should totally up to mark the wanted output to be obtained.

Figure 3.0.1: System Block Diagram
The system will include the specific building blocks,

MQ-6 LPG Sensor
It senses the leakage of LPG. The output of this sensor is high at normal condition. The
output goes low, when it senses the LPG.

Microcontroller
It is the whole control of the project. It controls the Auto Dialer, LED and Buzzer when
LPG leak occurs. The input/ output ports of the microcontroller is used for this.

Admin Phone
The admin phone can control the auto dialer. From the admin phone the user can change
the dialing number and messages sent from the auto dialer.

Auto Dialer
Modem performs an auto dial to authorized persons.

Buzzer
When buzzer is blowing, this indicates the leakage of LPG gas.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This project is performed in partial fulfillment for the award of Bachelor of Computer
Networking and Communication Technology and this is an under-graduated final year project.
Microcontroller, MQ-6 sensor, Auto Dialer is being used in this design to implement based
project in order to build a circuit that will be used to detect the LPG leak and automatically dial
to authorized persons.
A computing mechanism for LPG Gas detecting system is being provided by the dedicated
processor of the microcontroller which is being used by these systems. Fiber Optical sensors are
very expensive and they are not available to us. Fiber Optical sensors are being used for the LPG
detection by the real world. This sensor used in Oil and GAS industry.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
An embedded electronic application is the system to be designed. Both the principles of
hardware and software design methodologies are being adopted to complete the intended design
and then the following development approach will be used.

Literature review of the design, interfacing, practical restrictions & microcontroller

systems challenges.
Functional requirements elicitation from the users of the proposed system.
Identify the requirement of the System.
Simulation of the circuit and design of the system plan.
Implementation and circuit on an arduino board.

The current situation has been outlined with its associated problem in this project. A design
methodology has been identified as an approach to achieve the design goals and to solve the
present problem. Literature review of the different implementation of the GSM based kitchen
secure system related technologies reach an effective and valuable design in this project.

PROJECT EVALUATION

To evaluate this system I have proposed to use a log book tactic, so that the users can describe
their problem when they use this system and then we can solve any clarification about this. I will
use a questionnaire and survey to identify out this system. This will help to improve the system
in more ways and find any drawbacks about this system.

RISK ANALYSIS & CONTIGENCY PLANNING

1. The given time was not enough: - To complete and submission of the report and log book,
8 weeks of time was given by the project supervisor. Up to the submission date, the
actions taken to carry out this project has been recorded in the log book. The system has
been designed after planning to work capably and reliably affecting the economy of the
system at least as possible.
2. The program development problems: - The required programming knowledge turns out to
be too difficult for me. In this case I have tried in Micro to prepare the program and to
complete the reports and our undergraduate department lab hasn’t have needed electronic
devices. This would be a key problem, so I was needed to leave sufficient of time to
finish the programming well.
3. The cost and completely designed by the system: - It is an undergraduate final year
project for the award of bachelor of electrical and electronic Engineering. This project is
performed in partial fulfillment. Prototype Model will be finished successfully generally
for the proof of the idea. At this level industrialized application may not be achievable.
