NUR 4828 NURSING SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT SYLLABUS COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: NUR 4828 Nursing Systems Management (A RN to BSN On-Line Course) CREDIT: 4 credit hours PLACEMENT: Senior year-first semester PRE-REQUISITES: NUR3067, NUR3081 FACULTY: Julia Babb, 11000 University Parkway, Bldg. 8, Pensacola, FL 32514 PHONE: 850.473.7764 INSTRUCTOR AVAILABILITY: You may reach me via email at [email protected] Please allow 24 hours during the work week to respond to your questions. Weekend emails will be answered on Monday. You may leave a message on my office line. I will have online office hours in "LiveRoom." Times will be posted weekly in "News." For in office hours, please call me for an appointment. ABOUT THIS COURSE: This course is delivered totally online. You must have regular and reliable access to the internet, as well as, an email account. It is expected that you will have basic word processing skills, the ability to send/receive email with attachments, be able to search the internet and upload/download files and videos. Also, you will need basic knowledge of PowerPoint. You will generally set your own study schedule as to which days and times of the day that you do asignments. You cannot wait until the end of the semester and begin turning in all of your assignments. You are responsible for your own learning - be sure to discipline yourself appropriately. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Development of management skills for the professional nurse role by applying the principles of leadership theories and styles, management, and regulatory agencies that define boundaries of nursing practice in health care organizations. Collaboration, conflict management, and effective communication skills through the use of group process, and teaching/learning strategies that emphasize the leadership and management roles of the nurse. Also, the role of the professional nurse in efficient patient care management in complex healthcare settinngs. Permission is required. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will: I. Content A. Use the concepts of nursing theory, research and practice, based on the foundation of the arts and sciences courses, in the provision of care to diverse clients of all ages.

B. Employs theories and principles of leadership/management in the provision of quality nursing care 1. Describe quality improvement concepts, processes, and outcome measures with direction from appropriate resources. 2. Describe the integrated function of complex organizational healthcare systems. 3. Explain the concepts of organizational structure, mission, vision, philosophy, and values. 4. Evaluate quality and patient safety as complex system issues that involve individuals, families, and other members of the healthcare team. C. Describe and use appropriate teaching-learning theories to design, implement, and evaluate educational experiences with clients of all ages and abilities. II. Critical Thinking A. Use effective critial thinking skills (e.g., observation, analysis, synthesis) through the nursing process to provide and direct quality care to diverse clients of all ages. B. Incorporates socio-cultural, ethnic, religious, and other unique individaul considerations in the plan of care C. Evaluate and use appropriate research findings in own evidence based nursing practice 1. Analyze the current elements that impinge on nurse leaders III. Communication A. Apply therapeutic communication techniques to nurse-client relationships B. Demonstrate effective written and oral communication as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team 1. Explain and demonstrate the appropriate teambuiding skills necessary for successful collaboration with other health professionals. C. Use media resources and information technologies to enhance knowledge base D. Create and deliver professional presentations using a variety of media IV. Integrity/Values A. Demonstrate accountability, responsibility, authority, and professionalism based on the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics in own professional nursing practice

1. Identify and demonstrate behaviors which exemplify the professional nurse role. B. Explain the need for lifelong learning and describe a feasible plan for professional development. C. Function as a beginning leader/change agent through participation in community, governmental, and professional agencies/groups/organizations. 1. Participate in identifying and planning necessary changes to improve the delivery of service within a healthcare setting. 2. Demonstrate active involvement in the policy defining healthcare delivery and systems of care. *V. Project Management The Project Management learning domain in nursing is organized into four categories with related student learning outcomes. The four broad categories with associated specific student learning outcomes are: A. Project Conceptualization 1. Select and defines a realistic problem to be solved 2. Integrates discipline concepts, resources, and research appropriately B. Self-Regulation 1. Sets appropriate goals for completing project a. Submits goals for completion of project 2. Manages appropriate time-frame b. Develops and meets project time-line C. Team-Work Skills 1. Completes responsibilities as team member 2. Assesses quality of contributions of each team member accurately D. Project Delivery 1. Delivers a quality project on time 2. Effectively presents results using oral, written, and/or visual means

HEALTH INSURANCE PORTABILITY & ACCOUNTABILITY ACT OF 1996 (HIPAA): All healthcare providers must comply with the federal regulations of this Act. It requires that identifiable patient information be disclosed on a need to know basis with a minimal amount of disclosure to performa task. The patient's consent for treatment covers access to the medical record for information needed for treatment purposes and educational purposes. All students will protect patient privacy during oral and written communications. Patient name, initials, address, phone/fax numbers, and social security number will be removed from all student assignments. Students may not copy or circulate papers containing private, confidential patient information. Faculty members will store confidential papers in a locked file or will shred confidential papers. Additionally, students will meet all mandated agency requirements for HIPAA. Since HIPAA is a federal law, violations may result in fines and/or imprisonment. A grade of zero (0) will be assigned to any work submitted that does not adhere to this requirement. Life Handbook. Plagiarism is a serious offense in academia and may result in expulsion from the university. Students are directed to the examples available in the UWF Pace Library tutorials. For complete information regarding Academic Misconduct, refer to the UWF Student Handbook or contact Student Affairs in Building 10, Room 201, 474-2214. PAPERS: Papers are due in the "Dropbox" on the date and time specified. Any paper received after the designated date and time will be considered late and may have one point deducted for every day it is late. All late papers should be placed in the "Late" folder in the "Dropbox." Exception to the date and time will be made only under extraordinary circumstances in the opinion of the instructor, and must be negotiated before the due date of the paper. Papers and references are to follow APA 6th edition guidelines. You may obtain assistance on this format from the UWF Writing Lab. This instructor will not be teaching APA format. Also, you will not be given indepth feedback on APA errors. The student is responsible for the APA format. All papers are to be in WORD or .rtf format. If the instructor is unable to open a document because it is submitted in the wrong format, it will be treated as a late work with points deducted until it is resubmitted in a format that can be opened. DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA AS A REFERENCE ON ANY ASSIGNMENT OR DISCUSSION IN THIS COURSE OR ANY OTHER NURSING COURSE. TURNITIN: UWF maintains a university license agreement for an online text matching service called TurnItIn. The instructor may use the TurnItIn service to determine the originality of student papers. If the instructor submits your paper to TurnItIn, it will be stored in a TurnItIn database for as long as the service remains in existence. If you object to this storage of your paper: 1. You must notify the instructor no later than two weeks after the start of this class. 2. The instructor will utilize other services and techniques to evaluate your work for evidence of appropriate authorship practices.
